Okay. I know everyone has their opinions on where Jack's compass came from... but that is not what I'm talking about... My question is... at teh very end, when Jack pulls his compass out to, I'm assuming, go back to Isle De Muerta... where did the compass come from? You see, Jacks compass was attached to all his effects, but when he was arrested, and about to be hung, I'm assuming they took his effects, and his Jacket, away.. just like they did before. So, if his compass is with his effects, and they took those away... how did he get his compass back? Have I found a movie error? I think so... They would not have hung him with his compass... they would have taken EVERYTHING from him on the offchance it could be a weapon. So where did it come from? Interesting... I think so...

Yes, you'd think that they'd take anything like that away from him, but apparently they did overlook it, because you can see the compass on Jack's belt during that final face-off with the soldiers on the fort:![]() Maybe they figured it was worthless, since it didn't point north. And after Jack was dead, they'd likely strip anything of value off the body--rings and beads and jewels and whatnot.
Actually, I doubt that....he already knew where it was, and after all, the compass...{spoiler warning}*points to your heart's desire...so who knows what Jack really wanted in that moment? Perhaps all he wanted was that horizon, and the open sea. * |

[I completely fell for that one!]It's indeed weird that Jack had his compass... Maybe he requested to be hanged in full regalia (without weapons, of course - though I'm sure it wasn't him that specified that part of it). A condemned man's final wish, as it were... After all, you never know when a rash blacksmith might come to your rescue.

I've actually given a good bit of thought to the journey of the effects. One day I tried to follow them in my head while watching the movie, because they always seem to turn up in the strangest places. 1. After Jack removes his coat and hat and effects he hands them to M&M. After saving Liz and threatening her, he gets the effects and hat back. Escapes the Navy, fights Will and ends up in jail. For some strange reason, the officials leave his effects, hat, and coat right in front of the jail cell, ready for him to take with him should he(and when he did) escape. Not smart, eh? 2. Jack is captured by Barbossa and is imprisoned on the Black Pearl. When the two ships battle out at sea, and then Jack and Liz are stranded, Jacks effects are given to him but NOT his hat and coat. The hat and coat are still somewhere on the Black Pearl. 3. Jack kills Barbs, is almost hanged, and escapes by falling off the fort wall. The Black Pearl comes to his rescue, where Anamaria hands him his coat and hat. Hope that settles the question. |

Aye, the compass may point to where he wants to go, but it's not a guaranty it'll get him there... I do suspect the last person Sparrow is looking for is Davey Jones!
As to where he's off to, I'd imagine I'd want a bit of that loot before anyone else has a chance to get it, so my guess would be Isla de Muerta would be Jack's destination. He knows he's got time on his side and he also knows if he doesn't get the loot, now Norrington presumably does know where it is (is that reason enough to turn Norrington to become a pirate himself?).

It'd be better to be prepared with a bit of plunder before spending it in Tortuga! I expect the first thing Norrington did was to confiscate Jack's crown and other plunder he had with him. You see, I relaly think he expected to have most of his worries behing him as he left the cave. Plus, I imagine Tortuga probably be the first or second place Norrington would look for the Pearl. |

I'm sure the compass meant a lot to him, so if he really wanted to keep it and not have it taken from him, I'm sure he could have found a hiding place somewhere on his body for it.
I thought this was going to be about how it doesn't point north but he can still use it, I never knew how that worked but as I saw the title I had a brainstorm and that's the island is like a giant magnetic field or something, it messes with compasses of other ships like magnetic fields do and that's how no one can ever find it, no idea which direction to go in, but Jack's is somehow attracted to it, maybe the metal of the compass is made from part of the island, and that's why it doesn't point north but he still finds the island, weird how my mind works but that really did pop into my head the moment I saw the title, whether it is right or wrong.

EC, the compass' magic is that it points to the object of your desire. So, when Jack wants to go to Isla de Muerta, he just thinks of that and the compass complies. It'll supposedly all get explained a bit better in the sequel. That's why it didn't point north when Norrington checked it out. And that's why Bibbs told WIll, "Aye, the compass doesn't point north, but we're not trying to find north, are we?" |

Which makes me wonder what it was pointing to when James held it. Elizabeth, or something else? |

Maybe it doesn't just point the object/physical entity that you most desire? If he desired strongly enough for Jack to look like a foolish third-rate pirate, it would just point anywhere but north? Or would one have to actively know the purpose of the compass for it to work? |

Great question! I can't believe I've never asked myself that! (Oh, wait - Jack was in that scene, distracting me.
Seriously, I saw COTBP a hundred times before I noticed Norrie's smile in the boat, and then only because someone pointed it out.
 )Can you really not see where it's pointing? *goes to check* Er... is it pointing just past Jack's right? (Or is it my wrong? :P) Not Elizabeth then... The Dauntless? Murtogg?
