Er... is it pointing just past Jack's right? (Or is it my wrong? :P) Not Elizabeth then... The Dauntless? Murtogg? :P

Muahahahaha! Not pointing at Elizabeth, then? Excellent.

Hmmmmm. Well, whatever he most desired, it was not north of him. :P

Seriously, I saw COTBP a hundred times before I noticed Norrie's smile in the boat, and then only because someone pointed it out.

What smile is this? I may have noticed it without caring, or whatever. Could you point it out to me as well?

I'm guessing it was Norrie's smile in the 'little boat', when Jack was hanging all over him and 'esplainin' his idea to Norrie. And that stuck-up Norrie just knocked Jack's hand offa his shoulder. And smiled. :)

I love that bit! :D

Um... Norrie's smile comes just after Jack says 'If I'm being honest' .. or something like that.. Norrie smiles because of the irony in that statement...

 You never noticed that?...
Maybe it's just because I always stare at Norrie in the movie... hmm?

*Goes to see where the compass is pointing...*
*Stops and thinks for a second*

Err.. I don't think that is going to give anything away. I have a feeling the writers and whoever else didn't take this into consideration when Norrie had to hold the compass... so I don't think it will really matter...

*Goes to look anyway*

Nope... I was right.. you can't really see where it's pointing...

:D

Yeah, but it's fun to ponder. What does James want most in the world? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Gillette! Teeheehee...

Erm, I mean...Elizabeth, of course. Somehow I doubt that it can point him in the direction of a more distinguished career in the Navy.

But, this way, if it didn't show it pointing anywhere--it leaves them free to make up something in a later film about maybe where it might point--or allow them to say something in some sort of 'expanded universe.'

interesting thought, Alia-Hildwyn. i wonder if we'll ever find out what dear ol' norrie wants most in the world.

Here's something interesting to add:
In one of the deleted scenes from CotBP (the "Peas in a Pod" scene), Jack is talking to Elizabeth before Norrington comes over and sort of warns him off. When Norrington walks over, he is holding the compass open. It is apparent that he was looking at it. He gives a warning look and then says, "Sparrow, with me." (Or something close to that. He wants CJS to come talk with him, and he doesn't just tell someone to throw him in the brig again.)

So, was Norrington studying the compass? Did he suspect that there was something more to it? Of course, *incredibly minor DMC spoiler* in DMC his line on the dock makes it sound like he still thinks it's just an ordinary broken compass. But what did he and Jack talk about?

-No, I know, he wanted to know why it was only pointing to Jack. :P Kidding.

Seriously, ideas?

I... I have no idea. Maybe it was pointing foward... at Liz?

That's a REALLY good question... I would assume they would talk about the compass... but.. DMC proves that's not right... hmmmm

No, Norrington still did not suspect anything. Consider this dialog from DMC:
Quote:

Jack Sparrow: And whoever possesses that chest possesses the leverage to command Jones to do whatever it is he or she wants, including... saving brave William from his grim fate.

Norrington: You don't actually believe him, do you?

Elizabeth Swann: How do we find it?

Jack Sparrow: With this. My Compass. Is unique.

Norrington: "Unique" here having the meaning of broken.

Jack Sparrow: True enough. This Compass does not point north.

Here, Norrington seems to convincingly state that he believes the compass to be worthless.

(Oh, and sorry about any earlier spoilers... :-( Not sure exactly what I stated that wasn't obvious in DMC or was just pure speculation on my part.)

Like I said, in DMC he does make it sound like he doesn't suspect a thing. Still, you can't not wonder about that other scene.

But anyway, Norrington finds out that Beckett wants the compass (or is it the chest that Norrington knows about? I'm seeing the movie again tonight so hopefully I'll remember things better tomorrow). There is a DMC deleted scene in which *Mercer (Beckett's henchman) makes a deal with Norrington to track CJS and get...the compass? The chest? We don't know exactly what Mercer says to him.* So, anyway, Norrington must have found out that the compass was worth something then. We still don't know if he finds out what it *does.*

Where did you find out about that deleted scene? That's very interesting....

I'm not sure I didn't find out here...Oh, wait, I remember now. It was in someone's livejournal...Crud. I must not have saved it. It was essentially an essay about Norrington and how the deleted scenes (she/he mentioned a couple of them) made Norrington seem a lot more human in this movie - much like the scenes that were cut of him in CotBP.

Oh, and I did just get back from the movie, and it was definitely the compass Mercer told Norrington to retrieve. So either Norrie's line about the compass was right before her was pulled aside, or he was bluffing.

There's a picture out there somewhere of Mercer facing Norrington (whose back is to the camera) that's from this scene.

You totally lost me...

Are you saying that this is a deleted scene? If so... how do you know about the pictures?

Sorry.. I'm just getting totally confused.. which isn't hard to do...
