You really think he decided to resign that early...

Mmmmm.. I dunno...

Well, Gov. Swann made some reference to it having been months since Norrington resigned and I expect that would not have been that long before the planed wedding. Just speculation on my part... after all, it would seem very unprofessional to me to allow Jack to just walk off like that and not take immediate persuit.
That, or he must have been very depressed with all that just transpired.

Hmmm, I thought that Norrie resigned because he would have had some foreshadowing of a greater power(namely the King) punishing him for not going after Jack. At the end of CBP, I was under the impression that Norrie would still go after Jack, only that he respected Jack more than he had before...by a tiny bit. Then, after resigning because of fear (yes, we all have fear) he would have tried to redeem himself by catching Jack. Then, of course the hurricane happened. He would have been a basketcase after that, goodness knows what torment he went through.

:o And I just had a thought...perhaps Norrie never did actually resign, and Swann was just covering for him? Not a very good foundation for an idea, just a whim.

Ooo short bit of time...

Null, you're right about the three-fold slap in the face and Norrie probably made up his mind about giving up his position, at least in case he didn't catch Jack after all. wich he didn't, so therefor he resigned.

But that still doesn't explain to me why he wants these letters of mark so eagerly. Sure, he brings Beckett the heart and by outsmarting Jack (didn't realise until you mentioned it!) he took a little revenge.... but the ultimate revenge and imo the only way to regain respect is by bringing in Jack.
It seems just... well, so narrow-sighted of Norrie. But then again, he has always been narrow-sighted and narrow-minded indeed. I for me think it's obvious Norrie learnt a LOT about people and people's nature. And good and evil sides in one and the same person. And if he came to respect Jack a little more? I dunno... I don't think you can actually call it respect, but I do think he now more thinks of Jack as a human, not just a filthy animal like creature.

I think Norrie had a moment, where he actively chose to betray Jack by taking the heart. We see that when he looks at Jack off fighting DJ's crew, and he realizes why there's dirt all over the boat. He knew exactly what he was doing, and chose to do it anyway. He knew he doomed Jack in that instant. But that's the overall story of DMC, isn't it? Everyone involved made choices in their own interest, regardless of how it affected others. And each found that there was a price they were willing to live with.

In the end, I think Jack's choice was the most pure of any of them. He chose to go down with the Pearl...even before Liz locked him into it.

Norrie has now won back a sort of position and standing, but at what cost? I do hope that his love of position and standing lose out to what's right in the end.

That's a good way of putting it RumS... I never thought of it quite like that. I mean.. the end part. I think htere is a possibility that Norrington is just diggineg himself into a deeper hole, and I get the feeling that, no matter how large his fanbase, Norrington will not be getting as much attention to detail as we would all like. :( Oh well... maybe if we all wrote to the writers? Hahaha...

What exactly is 'right'...?!
That also is one of the deeper meanings in this movie, I think. All characters come to think different about what is right in life, or not. Law, definitely not. CJS comes to realise that being a good man isn't that terrible nor impossible as he used to make himself- and others- believe. Does that make him the purest of all? I don't really think so. For instance Governor Swann realising that 'Just' isn't brought by maintaining the law, is pure to me as well. At least he stops fooling himself too.

Actually this movie is all about doing the wrong thing in order to do right, so that makes Jack doing a good thing rather common... *blah* No, serious; I too think he had decided to go down with his ship before Liz forced him to do so and I think that's what makes him a good man. It's probably his purest deed ever indeed.
