Am I the only person who liked it?; I feel a little alone on this...

I think part of the real problem is that we became so attached to the characters in the first movie, for what they were.

Seeing them act in any way different than the first can seem insulting to some. But, what we have to realize is that the stakes have changed since the first one. EVERYONE (meaning Lizzie, Jack, and Binky) is on the run. Everyone is in a frenzy to save their own @ss. Seriously. Everyone in this movie displayed acts of heartless, cold selfishness.

Okay, I literally just got back from seeing the movie. And overall I would have to say I liked it. But something has been bothering my slightly about it. And I think you just pinpointed for me exactly what that was. As things are progressing, all of the characters are beginning to act a bit different. And I am attached to them the way they all were in the first movie. So the difference in everyone appears to have upset me slightly. I can only hope that as I think things over I can get more used to the changes.

I do have to disagree that everyone was only thinking of themselves. I feel that while there was indeed some of that, there were in fact several instances of people thinking of others.

I LOVED the movie. Yes, I will go out and say that I liked it better than CotBP.

Which doesn't surprise me, as this seems to be the Empire Strikes Back of the PotC franchise, and ESB is my all-time favorite Star Wars movie.

And I'm with you, Se7en, in believing that Jack was not going to actually allow those 100 (including Will) souls be eternally tied to Davy Jones. I saw it as simply his way of getting at least three extra days to find the DMC... because he knew that if he could find the DMC, he could free Will and the rest of the crew on the Dutchman because the heart would give him control over Davy.

So, I think that yet again, Jack's "bigger picture" was not selfish at all in comparison to the outward appearance of his actions.... Plus, as always, his plans backfired. At first he only had Will in danger (and I do believe he was 100% positive that he could get Will out of that dilemma), but then that backfired, so he had to go with the three-day, 99 souls plan...

When Jack and Gibbs are in the Faithful Bride, they only manage to recruit 5 men (including James). But is Jack worried? Not much, because he's not REALLY planning to get 99 souls... he just needs a tad bit bigger crew to help with sailing the Pearl so that he can find the chest faster.

So..... yeah, I'm probably getting a bit off-topic and this can go into a different thread for discussion, but I just think that if one sits back and thinks things through as we did for so long with CotBP, characters' reasonings can come to light. I have a firm belief that by the time AWE comes out, we'll have hashed everything out and those who may have had a difficult time accepting Jack's (and others') actions in DMC will have come to PCR* a way to accept those actions and find more enjoyment from DMC than they did in their initial viewings.

Hrm. Learn a new thing everyday, I do.

Star Wars anyone? Yeah, how very Yoda-like of me.

Dude. PotC needs a good parody. Wow. That was random. But don't you think it does?

Yeah, I never thought Jack was literally going to try to get 100 souls to give to Davy. I mean, if that were his plan he could just attack a few ships on the sea and kill those on board. But does he? No. He goes after the chest, which he could use to blackmail Davy and get himself out of his debt, thereby making it unnecessary for him to find 100 souls. If he wanted to get the souls going after the chest is the last thing he'd do, so that's obviously not his plan. He was just trying to get himself three extra days. And, I think he believed Will would find a way off the Dutchman (and he was right). I mean, he had faith enough in Will in the first movie to pit him against, what, three undead pirates while his hands were tied behind his back. I think he just knew Will well enough that he knew he'd find a way off. And, if Will didn't, Jack would have the chest, so he could probably bargain Will off the Dutchman anyway, if his plan went correctly. Of course, Norrie messed it all up (I still love you Norrie!).

In reply to the question that this thread poses:

Yes, I loved this movie very much.
And, yes, everytime I see it I like it more.

Side note: I agree with the theory that Jacksy was not worried about gathering souls because he was on his way to get his leverage.

I think those who didn't like it have a right to not like it, I mean, we're all different...I just think that they should watch it again and not think about the first, and most importantly, not compare it to the first.

If you're tired about the rum jokes, then keep in mind that you've heard it a million times when watching CotBP and also from all the Rumrunners so, yes, you would be tired of hearing the word "Rum", that's understandable.
The two T's obviously didn't watch CotBP a million times and so they wrote the Rum jokes for those who also didn't see it as much as we did...well, that's my theory anyways.

But also, to do with the repeated rum jokes- consider, everybody has certain little phrases or jokes they say quite a lot (for example, my friend says 'ya loozer' and 'totally' quite a lot- I can't think of any better examples off the top of my head), and so for character to repeat these phrases or actions I thought was totally acceptable. Plus, I liked them as references to the first- kinda a little... homage... to it (if that's the right word?).

I agree- it gets better each time you watch it- I saw it for the 2nd time yesterday, and was bouncing off the walls by the end!

I can honestly say I loved it! It maybe had a slow start but when it reached the second half it was just adrenalin all the way. Extremely funny and I personally never get tired of the Rum-jokes. I wouldn't say it's better than the first one but it's a worthy successor. I didn't really know what to expect so I guess that's why I'm not disillusioned like some Rumrunners. And this iss already said before somewhere: these guys know how to end a movie! Can't wait to see it again!
