He cut out his heart to ease the pain of loving a woman. Now I know it's a Disney film and suspension of disbelief is pretty vital in these cases but it just bugs me. In the COTBP we knew why they were cursed, how they were cursed and what effect the curse took upon them. Davy Jones was a sailor, albeit a brilliant one but still just a sailor. He cut out his heart and locked it in a chest (medically unsound at best) but how did he then come to captain a ship that can sail just as well above or below the sea? How did he and his crew become a walking, talking coral reef? What gives Davy Jones his powers? Just a thought. Captain Will Williams |

I agree, we will hopefully find out more in POTC 3. However, right now all I can say is that Davy Jones is a mythical character who has been around for years, and he has always had mystical powers of some sort as far as I know. Although I too am confused as to how he can still be alive while his heart resides elsewhere but in his chest...er...his body.

I know but they're already taking liberties with the legend, it would be nice to know a little more about it. Captain Will Williams |

I agree--it would be good to know more--but if there is one thing about legends, and you bring up a good point, how they deal with them in PotC--is that that are not always as they seem. No character ever seems to know the full story unless they are directly involved in it somehow (ex--Jack getting off the island--he and the rumrunners would know, and then later Elizabeth because she was involved in escape from the island round 2). Fictitious as the movie is, they could be trying to provide the "real" background for Davy Jones, and the legends that we have now (which are..different) are most likely the best known myths that are propogated in the PotC 'verse. |

Uh. I don't know. I mean. I never thought about it. Good question though. I mean. Yeah. It's a good question. How does his ship go underwater and how oh... How did he get the Kraken? Hmm... |

Depp and the director (Vebelski? Sorry, can't spell his name.) said that POTC 3 will say a lot about what happened to Davy Jones. |

An old legend says that Davy Jones was a sailor who missed his wedding due to a storm and returned to find his fiancee had married another man. So he sold his soul to the Devil for power over the seas. That seems to be the main source of inspiration for DMC's Davy. |

There we go then, that's all they needed to say. At least Barbossa covered the entire curse in a beautifully delivered monologue. A bit of exposition, a bit of backstory, it's just polite. Captain Will Williams |

i was also bothered by this, i just basically said okay well they are getting all crustaceany because of all the time the spend under the sea, whatever. and i accepted that the ship was just a MAGIC ship. but i was bothered immensely when CJS is looking through the telescope and then DJ just appears, i dont know why out of all the unexplained things, that bothered me the most. i just cant come up with one single justification for how being in control of the sea can teleport you, come on now... |

Somehow I get the feeling that we will get more from the next movie. From Jacks line, "How much do you really know about Davey Jones" we all assume we are about to be told, but then the line is cut short. I think that might have been a clue that more was yet to come... |

SPOILERS FROM P3: * I think when Callisto msde him immortal ( she was the woman ) the powers came with it. She gave him a ship to rescue sailors lost by sea... and when she lost interest he cut out his heart.* |
