Lord Cutler Beckett... a.k.a. WILLIAM COLLINS!; Anyone else seen 'Pride and Prejudice?'

Quick question: Was anyone else practically rolling on the floor when they realized that Beckett was played by none other than Tom Hollander, the man who played the rodent-like William Collins in the recent remake of Pride and Prejudice?

Being quite the P&P fan myself, I about died a couple different times, because I kept envisioning the part of P&P when Collins is standing in front of Catherine De Bourgh, and it looks like he's about to break into the potty dance.

Ha ha... next time Beckett ticks you off, just envision him doing the potty dance. Sure to make you smile.

I have to say, for this very reason, I couldn't take Beckett seriously at all. Every time he showed up on screen, I almost started laughing. I always invision his proposal, and it just makes me laugh every time!

Here I thought, from the previews, that they would have some dashing, tall, handsom man that would rival my love for Norrington, and then he shows up. I was kinda dissapointed, but it was still hillarious...

I still don't know exactly how I feel about Cutler Beckett. He almost seems to be no threat at all. Short in stature, higher pitched voice, and bearing no obvious threat in his demeanor, he seems to be a flat character at the moment. In the movie for the purpose of providing a second story. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong in the third movie.

Not nearly as good as Jack Davenport playing a stuffy man...or even Jonathan Pryce for that matter. IMO.

I see your point; physically, he's more or less insignificant. Though, I do have to say that I do think he has a great deal of "bad guy potential;" the fact that he's so physically inferior may make him all the more dangerous--less likely to fight honorably, and all that; knows he has to be underhanded to have the advantage.

In fact, I have to say that, when I'm not envisioning him as William Collins and/or doing the potty dance and therefore snickering myself to death, I'm actually rather intimidated (God, that's hard to admit to; it's like saying I'm intimidated by Collins!) by the potential he has--I think he'll end up being one nasty guy in the end.

Beckett strikes me as severely amoral; think Niccolo Machiavelli and the whole 'the ends justify the means' routine. He'll do a great deal to get what he wants, and won't care who gets hurt along the way; he only cares about what he gets in the end. This is slightly evident in his manipulation of other characters (Will, Gov. Swann) throughout the film.

Though, if I take away all of that--given that it might be entirely projected onto the character by yours truly--he is very flat. He gives us a secondary plotline to follow.

No, I agree; Beckett is creepy. He has enormous power, and practically no scruples. Makes for one scary guy.

(But I haven't seen Tom Hollander in "Pride and Prejudice", only in "The Libertine" - and I don't remember much of how he was in that, really...)

I'm glad it's not just me! Villians like Beckett--the sort that have political power, blackmail weight, things like that--are the ones that really get to me.

I've only ever seen Tom Hollander in DMC and P&P, but, despite how much Collins bashing I'm prone to, I think he's pretty good; I'd like to see him in The Libertine, just to get another role in my comparison. Is it any good?

Oh my, I had totally forgotten that he was in that film! I think I know which one he was too...not as cute definately, then again not even Richard Coyle came off as cute in that one, or Jack Davenport.

The Libertine was...not to my taste. I know a lot of people enjoyed it (I went for Jack Davenport and Richard Coyle so maybe that was my problem)...but it just wasn't for me. Some of the laughs were good, but...I like a little action and adventure and plot in my movies--this was just a good character piece and chance for Johnny Depp to show off his acting skill.

In that case, I think I'm glad that I missed the theater release (it was released in theaters, wasn't it? I thought I heard something about it...). In any case, it'll give me a comparison to see if I really think he's as good an actor as I'm thinking he is.

Sorry, but all I could think when Beckett was on screen was "You're quite short, aren't you?" followed by, "Not nearly a good as Norrie" and finished by "You're just a nasty man, I don't like you" :P

I thought it was funny until I saw the movie and saw how evil Beckett was. Now I wonder if I'll ever be able to watch P&P again! :o :D The concept was funny. I have a picture of Elizabeth and Beckett that I saved on my computer as "Lizzie and... Mr. Collins?!" But Beckett is simply too evil to think of him as Mr. Collins. Maybe that's just me, though. I agree with what Sarah said about villains who blackmail and have lots of power being scary.

The characters are sort of separated-but-linked is my excuse, lol. I see Beckett, and a bit later, I remember that he's played by the same guy who played Collins, an image of Collins doing the almost-potty dance flashes through my head. It's really rather strange, because I always start giggling at rather inopportune moments.

But I agree; Beckett on his own is one creepy guy. I think I'd prefer a physically powerful villian, because they're... well, more predictable. Whereas a villian who doesn't have a physical advantage has little scruples.

When he's not William Collins (automatic turn-off there), he is rather striking isn't he? I thought I was the only one; I'm glad you said something. I can never, ever see him as even remotely resembling something that is attractive in P&P (goes to show just what personality does for appearances!), but in DMC and in some of the photographs I've seen of him as himself...

... ... ... I have to agree. ::hides:: Still scary as heck, mind you. And one of the slimiest rats I've seen. But there you are...

Hmmm...apparently, he was also in Gosford Park...

I tried to watch it once, but I didn't finish it. :D Was too busy with doing other things.

I will agree... he's not bad looking from the shoulder up.. but you know what does it for me..?

He's too short. I mean.. I'm sorry.. but I like tall men. You have to be freaking hot to be able to pull of short.. and I know very few guys that can do it.. (Minus a teacher I had once.. but that's beside the point...) I mean... he's 5'5! Geez...

And, well.. maybe it's because of Collins.. but his voice grates my ears... it lulls me to sleep. Heh. Yeah.. I'm really mean.. I know..
