Davy Jones and the Magic of CG; Pics & Info Straight from ILM's Mouth

I was reading about PotC over on TrekBBS, and someone posted a link to a thread on CGTalk (a board I'm a member of, but don't frequent much) that is a discussion of the CG of Davy Jones in DMC.

A couple ILM animators, including John Knoll himself, joined in on the thread and gave some incredibly interesting tidbits of info.

I'm going to post the links to their individual posts (since the thread is extremely long), and summarize the coolest tidbits here... I'm copy/pasting the full posts into Word for posterity...

*****

SUMMARIZED TIDBITS

-- though Bill Nighy is seen in the animated gifs as having makeup and dots on his face, those were present as a last resort.... as such, ILM did such a great job at CG'ing Davy Jones, that they never once did facial motion-capture on Bill; Davy's face was 100% hand-animated!

-- a couple blue tentacles were used in the scene with Will stealing the key for actor-reference, but were later completely replaced by CG

-- unlike regular motion capture, where the actor is in a totally blue room, Bill was on-set the whole time. Also unlike usual CG motion capture, there was usually only one "pass" made. The usual way, as used in Star Wars with Jar-Jar, is that you make one camera pass with no-one on set. You make a second with just the people that are standing in for CG characters (Ahmed for Jar Jar, Bill for Davy). Another pass is made with all except the CG stand-ins, and a final with all of them in the scene.

But in DMC.... they only made a single pass (when two were made, it was one with everyone, and one with no-one)... It was an unprecedented procedure concerning motion capture (reading the replies in this thread were really fun to read with how astonished everyone was.... and these are all very hardcore CG people on this board)

-- Davy's eyes are completely CG... Every close-up is full CG; not one inch of the character on-screen is physically Bill Nighy. Not a single prosthetic was used.

A testament to the believability of the CG comes in reading the replies on this thread at CGTalk... There are several VERY accomplished CG artists on there reporting that they were completely duped and thought that Davy was prosthetics with CG touch-up... THAT is how good the CG is.

PICTURES

Here are three .gif animations showing Bill Nighy in his motion-capture suit and then imposing the Davy Jones image on top of it:

Joy, this is JUST what I needed!

My dear ol' grandmother didn't believe me when I said DJ was made by CGI.

Now I have proof! Mwahahaha!

Thanks for posting it :D

It really is AMAZING what they've done... When I was watching DMC (all three times) I kept having to remind myself that Davy's all CG. It's insane- he looks so real!

Wow... I knew that DJ was good (I saw him, didn't I? :P), but it's cool to hear that he's even good to the professionals.
Interesting stuff, Joy - thanks!

Well...he does look incredibly real, I'm amazed every time I see him.

WOW!!! Those gifs are fantastic! I especially like the one with the grey pajama crew. I knew there weren't any prosthetics used, but to know that those incredibly expressive eyes were CGI as well is mind boggling. They've really raised the bar with this one!

Thanks for sharing, Joy! :D

I hope the DVD has scenes of them filming the "pajama pirates".

Those pictures are awesome. Thanks. I've been reading that thread. Interesting stuff. I applied for two jobs at ILM in the past year or so (administrative, not computer), but didn't get hired. :(

I didn't have the patience to read the stuff from John Knoll, but I did look at the pictures, and those are WAY kool. I mean, that is just amazing. It must have been so strange acting everything out like that, with all that junk on you, and everyone kinda looking like you are all wearing the same thing.

WOW WOW WOW...

Thanks Joy!
