I don't know if this has been mentioned already, sorry if it has! But I thought it was really cool how in this one they finally told how Jack's compass works! Maybe it was really obvious in the first one and I'm just really slow or oblivious, but anyway...I thought it was cool and I just wanted to share that with everyone

Aye, I agree with you. I wish I had a compass that worked like that. Have a big descision to make? Oh, I'll just look at my handy dandy compass.. that will tell me.. heh heh... |

It doesn't always work that easily, though. Poor Jack didn't really know what he wanted for a long time, so the compass wouldn't work for him. It only works if you're really committed to something. |

According to an interview I read recently with Ted & Terry (the writers), they didn't really have the compass' nature nailed down until the second movie. In the first one they just had the reason being that it pointed to the Black Pearl. While writing the new stuff about it in P2, they said they went back through the entire first movie to make sure they never came right out with the explanation, otherwise they would have been screwed for P2.

And to think of how we picked that movie apart speculating about what the compass REALLY pointed at and how it worked, LOL. If there was anything at all obvious, I'm sure we would have found it a couple of years ago. |

Yeah, Pawz...makes you wonder how much of our stuff the writers read online before/during the writing of P2. After all, they turned Norrie into a pirate for us.

Right! Random thought about the compass: How the heck does Beckett know about it, anyway? Jack's crew seems clueless (and if they weren't, he could maybe have used one of them to work the compass, without telling them the whole story about DJ)... I doubt he told anyone. So we have Tia Dalma that knows, and Jack. Jack bartered the compass from her... The Visual Guide says that that was seven years pre-COTBP, I think, but I'm not sure, and it's not the best source. So what did Jack give Tia Dalma in return? And how did Beckett end up knowing about this deal that happened 5 (?) years after his last known encounter with Jack? Likewise (though this may simply be chance): how did he know about the chest? You can presume it's a well-known story, but Gibbs, Pintel and Ragetti don't seem to know the details. (That was only exposure, I know... Sshht! I'm overanalysing here, and it's dangerous to interrupt someone when doing so; it might put them in that state forever. Oh, wait... Too late to prevent that.) So... one would almost think that Beckett has had dealings with Tia Dalma himself - but he doesn't seem the type (even ignoring a possibly troubled past between them). |

Actually, the possibility of turning Norrington into a pirate already at the end of POTC-CotBP was considered. You need to take a look at some of the extras on teh POTC DVD. Lots of interesting information in there. It also makes sense why someone else other than Jack (Beckett) would be so eager to get the compass -- otherwise, it'd make no sense, as it'd do nobdy else any good other than just finding Tortuga. So, that was a very clever way of making the compass an important object without having inconsistencies with its role in CotBP. |

That has to be wrong. Jack and Boossa set sail 10 years before POTC, and Jack had the compass then.. so I'm assuming it's something from his very early years of being a Pirate... Yeah...

DutchS, those were questions I wondered about myself.
Actually I think he is the type. Not that it shows. This Beckett is so incredibly sneaky. How does a cuttler become a Lord anyway? And what does he have against knives and swords all of a sudden (=scene with the Gov). I bet there's so much underneath his mask of indifference and that sarcastic little smile... (Ooo the man gives me the creeps!!!!) |

I doubt he was ever a cutler - it's just his name. (A silly name, but there you have it.)
Did he? If he knew the location of the Isla de Muerta, he could have used any old compass. In fact, if he didn't have a normal compass, it would be a lot more difficult to give Barbossa the (normal) bearings. And Barbossa's cruel, but he's not stupid; he'd figure out that there was something going on with the compass, and he'd have taken it. But then, it's entirely possible that I'm missing something significant here... |

I'm not sure what you mean here; Cutler is his first name. And a question about something else mentioned: when was Beckett's last known encounter with Jack? Obviously we're told in DMC that Beckett gave Jack his brand but we aren't (I'm pretty sure) told *when.* |
