So she's totally the reason Jack died!!! If it weren't for her, the compass would have pointed in the right direction, and Jack could've gotten to the chest on time, and he could've bargained with Davy. I's all because of Liz! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Oh, and personally, I think Norrington still loves Liz... in fact, I dare say now he lusts after her, whereas I didn't get that feeling in the first movie. That look he had when Liz kissed Will... aw, that was just too sad. Poor guy.

*closeup of DutchS screaming that zooms ever out as the sound spreads* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! They can't do that. They can't seriously mean that. Honestly! Nononononono - NO! I'm not saying it's not impossible for Jack to like her, even love her maybe (though why he would love her is seriously beyond me, and even if he does it seems strange that his love would remain so strong that it overpowers his will to live even though he hasn't seen her in a year or so) - but please can't there be one character who isn't in love with little Miss Mary Substitute? (Er... That's as near to Mary Sue as you can get without being it. It's an official term, trust me... )*sigh* OK, so I'm just not happy with the whole thing because I hate Liz. (No particular reason; I just do.) But I think we can all agree that this is a little bit beyond likely, right? I mean, even if she is attractive (which I personally don't think, but I seem to be alone in this) - she's constantly mistreating people. Constantly! Who would even put up with being with her - let alone being in love?! I was so happy with that leaked bit of the POTC3 script because it had a section that seemed to prove beyond doubt that Jack did not care for Liz... and now this. I'm inclined to go all fangirl and say Jack deserves better.
That's about my favourite line in the whole movie. That and: "Oh." (You can see I appreciate Jack's verbal skills.)

Mr Collins?...I mean Beckett? Or will we find out in the next one that he is... I'm completely with you on this Dutch, I think it is a huge mistake to have three of the guys all going for Liz at one point of another throughout the films, or all at the same time. I have no problem with Jack/Liz shippers...really I don't. It's not my thing, but I don't have a problem with it, except for when every guy is falling head over heels for Liz already. I really think Jack's more capable of infatuation...not necessarily love for her. I'm sure that given the chance to sleep with her, he would--but wouldn't Jack jump at that opportunity with any woman providing that there are no strings attached? You know...like a marriage that actually requires him sharing in duties, and all that scary stuff.
You could make up for previous anti-Norrie comments by saying it's because she broke his heart... Hahaha, I am actually getting somewhat of a perverse delight in this though, no matter how much I disagree with it. Nice to see that it isn't just Norrie fans who are up in arms about how their character has changed into DMC...now we've got some Jack fans there too. We're just about even now, Dutch.

Wow, we've strayed a bit from speaking of the compass. If I'm reading into Ted's article right, it's bad news. I'm no Jack/Liz shipper in the least. I agree with all posters who say he would definitely "know" her but his line about the sea being his only love burns in my mind. I wouldn't want Jack to be any other way...would totally ruin any love for the sequels for me. |

Actually I find it more common in real life that people go for someone who is not considered the "nice" one. I've done it many times myself. Looks has a lot to do with it but not all of it. As humans we just seem to gravitate to the things that really aren't that good for us in the long run. It's like when you were a little kid, even though your parents told you not to do something you did it anyway simply out of curiosity, knowing you very well could pay the price later and be punished. Human nature, luv. I wish I knew WHY we did those things. "The devil made me do it" perhaps? I agree that it is a bit annoying (and contrived?) how all the guys in POTC fall for Liz. I guess it could happen if she was the only pretty one around the region (which she very well might have been) . Jack should have hooked up with Ana Maria.

I agree with what everyone has said so far. I still can't see how/why Jack would love Liz. *shivers* Jack doesn't seem like the one to fall in love or stay in love for that matter. The thing I'm a bit confused about now is Jack's ' my first and only love is the sea' or whatever. He probable changed his mind, but for Liz(I just don't care for her) is beond me.

I think that line might function as a rehersed and easy rejection line for Jack. Especially if he's been with someone before and might need to turn them down. You know--it might be his equivalent of the telephone rejection hotline... "Sorry, mate, I really shouldn't have slept with ya, my love is the sea and my ship, or alternatively if I haven't slept with ya yet, Bob's your uncle, blah, blah, blah. I'm not in love with ya, savvy?" An absolutely dreadful Jack there...but then again, I never claimed to be able to write him. But you can desire someone and still not be in love with them, right? Please, please, please.... *crosses fingers* |
