Ever had a computer that managed to do the stupidest, stupidest things? Like fail in really awful and horrible ways that are uncommon--or caused some embarassment for you? Stories like that which are somewhat amusing? Let's hear 'em here. A while ago, maybe six years I think, my family had an AMD computer. I usually monopolized it for playing Diablo, and as was quite customary--I was on the computer playing diablo. So I pause the game and get up to go get something. For some reaons my dad and sister were also in the room with me, and when we came back in we're like, "Whoah...what's that burning smell?" We look over at the computer, and the moniter is blank....and smoking. Black smoke rising from the back of the moniter (traditional moniter, not the flatscreen stuff). So we ripped the cord and ended up getting rid of it, but the room smelled slightly smoky for days, despite leaving the windows open. Well, shortly after we hooked up a new moniter, within a month or two, the whole friggin' computer died on us. When we went to go check out the company where we bought it from, we found out that they were out of business. Go figure. But I shall never forget the day where I saw the computer moniter smoking...just one of those once in a lifetime occurances I think. |

Last week, when I went to bed my computer was on and running fine, set on the desktop and everything. When I got up the next morning, the default Windows screensaver was playing instead of my Silver Dollar City one, and when I clicked out of it, my computer was at the Windows log-in page, as though my comp. had been rebooted. But no one had touched it after I went to bed. So, it seems my computer rebooted itself. Strange and weird, that one. :Love To All: ~ Joy ~ |

Windows!
It's what I've been saying for years--Microsoft has created AI--and it's called Windows. |

I'd be concerned if it does it all the time. My dad works for Sun Microsystems, so I always go to him for computer advice. I asked him about the rebooting thing, and he said that if it's only done it once, it might have been from a brownout--the electricity may not have gone out completely where it affected the whole house, but it may have flickered enough to cause my computer to reboot. But he said that if it reboots constantly, there's either a setting on the computer that's doing it, or it's a problem with the mother board... Could be chip-shift or even burn-out. He told me to make sure that there's plenty of space behind my tower for the fan to blow, and to make sure there isn't too much dust caked back there, because if it gets too dusty, the air can't really flow and the computer could get overheated. So, I'd see about finding someone you know who knows about computers and can take a look at the settings and the hardware just to make sure everything's okay. :Love To All: ~ Joy ~ |

Well, I'm usually the computer wizzard among my friends and family, so I didn't think it would be too much of a problem when a friend called and said his computer would shut down at random, but quite frequently. He had just added an extra harddrive, so I reinstalled windows...... Twice.... Same problem, I ran temparture monitors on the motherboard and graphics card, no problem I opened the cover and cleaned the heatsinks and fans, checked for loose plugs and damaged cables. After that the computer seemed to run perfectly, but only for a few days, I had him remove the new harddisc, helped a bit but problem was still there. Finally I came to think about the power supply, it was a computer I had built for him 2 years ago and he had bought a nice tower to stick all of the stuff in, we had just used the included power supply. I had him open the tower and read me the specs on the side over the phone, it was a no-name supply, not good, so finally we tried to buy a new power supply of a respected brand. Guess what, not only did it solve the problem, but the computer suddenly felt like it was running more than twice as fast, no wonder, the advanced Bios on the ASUS motherboard had detected unstable power-supply and tried desperatly to keep the system running by dropping preformance and power usage. Problem solved, but that should not have taken so long to figure out. |

My computer would make this weird ticking/creaking noise. Then it would go silent, and the computer would reboot. We found out it was the hard drive that was all busted up. Some kind of virus. So now we have to get a new hard drive. |

I'm afraid my computer might be dead (my laptop). Everytime I try to turn it on, it says something about an unmountable boot volume. This happened once before, and I just didn't bother it for 2 weeks and it was fine. But this time... not so. I'm really sad because there are things on there that I can't get anywhere else. Like the POTC Answering Machine Messages thread that got deleted off of IMDb. That made me laugh! So I'm hoping it can be fixed without permanent damage. Cross your fingers for me! |

Ehhh, if it's JUST some kind of virus you should be able to simply format the drive and reinstall windows (that'll loose all dato on the drive though), optionally you can find several ways of booting from floppy disc or cd-rom (check out BartPE, that allowes you to create a Windows XP that runs clean of a CD in safe mode) then you can secure your valuable data before wiping the system. Once ready you should be able to boot from the Windows install cd, select a clean install and be sure to do a full format of the harddisc To Pirategirl The above might appeal to you as well, a virus, or even a severe windows crash can mess up the boot part of your harddrive, with a boot-cd you might be able to salvage data before a reinstall (which in that case would be posible on your old drive) Edit: Link to BartPE Builder |

To topcat- no that wont work. my step-dad who knows computers opened it up and the hard drives were all messed up and broken looking. I guess spinning wrong must have done something bad. We do have to get a new hard drive. |

At least yours reboots. My laptop just dies. It's quite frustrating when I'm doing something important. It usually restarts after a few minutes, but it's been known to be off for days. My new theory is not the power adaptor as initially thought, but that it's possessed. I intend to get it exorcised as soon as possible. |
