The Island; What IS this place, anyway?

So - what is this mysterious island where people are hung in stocks to be eaten by birds? Where Jack finds the drawing of Davy Jones's key? Where Jack escapes in a coffin in possibly one of the funniest scenes in the film?

Anyone have any thoughts? Any historical knowledge or guesses?

The only thing I know is that is referred to as the Turkish prison. Where it is and why Jack was there is a mystery to me. Sorry for the lack of info, but there you go.

Not so sure it's an island. I keep hearing that it was a Turkish prison, but there's really nothing in the film to suggest an actual location. It certainly looks like a horrible place though, considering the only way out is in a coffin. :ph43r:

I'm reminded of the film from a few years back....Midnight Express. If Turkish prisons were that bad in the 20th century, imagine what it was like a few hundred years ago. *shudder*

I assume Jack only went there because somehow he needed information. I don't think he 'found' the drawing of the key there--I think he went specifically looking for a person who knew about it. Who they were and how they knew about the key, I have no idea--but they were able to draw Jack a picture of it.

We also know that they were in the general area, as they had been roaming all over the Atlantic, and that Norrie had almost had them all off Tripoli, so they were in the general vicinity. I can see why the crew was upset...all that traveling around and nothing to show for it but a 'drawring of a key'...much more better!

Yes, I can just imagine a deleted scene where it's the whole "I know what your going through right now" scene.
