Well, yeah, like the title says. On Wednesday my computer randomly decided to quit working. I've been trying to fix it the entire time since then. Today I finally gave up and took it in to a professional to repair it. Hopefully he'll be able to fix it. If not... *sigh* The worst thing is wondering what'll happen to all my pictures... all my beautiful pirate pictures, my avatars of my character on AG, pictures from my graduation... ooh, and my favorites, links to videos on youtube... the "Macavity" Jack Sparrow video and the "I Need a Hero" James Norrington video that are saved on my computer... link to the pirate chat... well, okay, I could go on and on. I just hope it's all okay.

If this isn't in the right spot feel free to move it. :)

Yeah, I can sympathize. My puter died last week, for the second time in a month. I've got a new Dell coming this week, and the old one is in the shop and will become my new backup machine. I lost all my favorites too. :(

I will say that this has made me a believer in external hard drives, though! I had most of my POTC pics and such saved there, so I didn't lose them. You can even back up your favorites folder there too (which I wish I would have done). It's definitely one of the best computer investments you can make, IMO!

I hope the shop can fix it, and recover your data!

 Poor Tomb. I know how awful it is to have your computer die on you (mine died about this time last year).

Make sure you make lots and lots of backups of everything you have saved on your comp if/when you get it back.

I don't know if it's the right way to make backups but I copied the pics I wanted to save onto CDs. If you've got an external harddrive you could put them there (I have one but I'm having trouble getting it to work)

Tomby! I've miiiiiissed yooou!

That is a lot to lose to if it can't be fixed, I'm sure a lot of it you can get again, we can send links to things, and pictures aren't always able to get back, personal ones will be really sad if you lose those, but we can help with the rest! :)

I hope you get everything sorted out soon, it's so sad with you not being able to get on, but I'm glad you're ok and able to send a message to us, I've been worrying lots!

Aww. Tomb! I'm sorry to hear your computer is messing up!

Unless the hard drive has crashed horribly, it's possible to put your hard drive as a second drive in another computer and copy files off that way. Even if your hard drive has crashed, sometimes data files (like images)
are recoverable, even if the operating system is messed up.

Ugh, computer trouble... I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Backups: as for pics, I know someone who puts everything on Photobucket, using that as a storage back-up. It's probably not ideal, but it is a place separate from your computer anyway, for when anything happens to that - and it saves you the CDs you might otherwise burn the pics on.

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers!!! You are all too sweet, and I miss you all very much. You are all the best!!!

I just got a call that the video card and the power supply on my computer were what was messing up. I guess a fan broke and caused the video supply to overheat. :( The guy was going to order the parts to get it fixed today, and he said he thought he'd be able to get it all fixed by Friday, so hopefully then I will be able to be back. *crosses fingers*

Gah, I keep thinking of all the stuff I'm going to have to put back on the computer when I get it back. I don't even remember my AIM password, it was just automatically in there. *bangs head* I've got a list of about 15 things I'll have to go and redownload. Well, it could have been worse. Gotta keep positive. Still gonna cost me over $300 to get it all fixed. *sigh* Still, that's a lot cheaper than getting a whole new computer. Well, it's even cheaper than just buying the Microsoft Suite I'd need to get Word and Excel on a new computer.

If it's just the video card and the power supply, I would think all your data would be OK. I replaced the power supply on mine a few months ago, and the hard drive wasn't affected at all....so you may be just fine. :)

My computer did have a hard drive crash, so I've been busy all evening getting things back how I like them....and I think the new computer is coming tomorrow, so I'll get to do it all again. :P

Here's hoping your hard drive is OK! *crosses fingers* And if it is, be SURE to back up your most important things! One other thing you might get is a couple of those little flash/travel drives. I have some that hold up to a gig, and they are relatively inexpensive, small and very easy to use. :)

Gah, hard drive crashes... Mine at work die a week or so ago... took another week to get a new hard drive in it, which meant the whole office was down cos I'm the server!

We got most of the stuff off our old hard drive onto our new hard drive thankgod, I was sweating at losing all the propsals and what not!

I thought my computer crashed over the summer. I couldn't use it for over a month! Luckily, I live at home where there are other computers that I can use besides mine. Also luckily, when I actually sat down and tried to do something with it, I magically discovered a way to fix it! But I am now a firm believer in having backups of everything. Some things are hard to get back, and others are impossible! So backup EVERYTHING.

Glad to hear that everyone else's crashes seem to be resolving themselves somewhat nicely.

EDIT: Ha! The irony that is my life. My computer did that error message thing I was talking about this morning. Less than 24 hours after I posted this! Now it's useless for a few days. Right in time for my final projects... <_<

Aw, I'm sorry, PG.

I just want to say again how wonderful all of you are. You guys are truly the best.

I got my computer back today! :yay: It's working. Woot! Well, the bars at the bottom of the screen that say where the volume's at aren't working, and for somereason when Itry to open internet explorer it doesn't automatically pop up with a box for me to sign on to the internet like it used to, but those are trifles. *hugs her computer* I'm so glad to be back here! :yay:
