How would you all like to help me out with a contest of sorts? A friend of mine works in the legal dept. at Disney and every year they have a Greenlight Derby. Everyone predicts the 16 week box office for the 2007 Disney movies. My friend doesn't go to movies, but I do so she wants my help again, I thought it might be fun to involve all of you. She just emailed me the list the first movie opens Feb. 16. Anyone interested? If so reply to the post or email me, I only have access to this computer Mon-Friday, so I'll check on Monday, if there is enough interest, I'll post the movies on Monday and we need to have the predictions in by Feb 14. I hope you'll all play, I think it will be fun. And yes POTC is on the list. |

Ok, here is the list: Bridge to Terabithia Feb. 16. Not too sure about this one, has a Narnia feel to it. This is a twee/teen movie. Wild Hogs March 2. Saw the trialer for this one and looks hilarious. Stars John Tavolta, Tim Allen, William H. Macy as a wannabe motorcycle gang. Meet the Robinsons March 30. Original release date was June 06 and pushed back to March 07. Disney's first digital movie. John Lasseter hated it when he first saw it. This one will tricky Pirates 3 May 25. DMC made $420 mil at the 16 week mark, not sure what to guess on this as I'm not sure how all the pirate fans feel about this one Ratatouille June 29, Pixar latest follows a rat and wannabe chef into the sewers of Paris where he lives below a 5 star restaraunt. Pixas says this is their best movie ever. Underdog August 3 - Based on the cartoon, I personally think this one sounds stupid, Jason Lee is the voice of the dog. It's a live action film Dan in Real Life September 21 - Steve Carell stars as a widower who falls in love with a woman only to find out she's his brothers girlfriend. Dane Cook also stars. Enchanted November 21 - Amy Adams is an animated princess who is banished from her animated world into the streets of New York. Patrick Dempsy is the love interest. The Game Plan, sometime in the fall, stars the Rock as a bachelor NFL star who finds out he has a daughter. I will see this one because hello, the Rock and I love football movies. There you have them. Reply with your predictions by Friday the 9th. This should be fun. |

Um... is it the worldwide gross or just the domestic? Just for the hell of it, I'll do both! Bridge to Terabithia This one... I can't see it being successful... Domestic: It'll either bomb or only do around $74 million Worlwide: $150,000,000 Wild Hogs this one will bomb. Domestic: $25,500,043 Worldwide: $60,565,643 Meet the Robinsons Man, this one is tricky... It could be a success... But then again it could bomb... Domestic: $120,000,000 (I think all the kids will want to see this one) Worldwide: $247,627, 230 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End This one is tricky. On one hand it could be more successful than DMC, but it also has Spider-man 3, Harry Potter and the Golbet of Fire, and Shrek 3 to compete with... Domestic: $400,000,000 Worldwide: $885,795,952 Ratatouille It's Pixar, so it'll do good by default. But the subject is... meh, so I wonder how big... Domestic: $231,583,778 Worldwide: $458,383,819 Underdog Bomb Domestic: $25,000,000 Worldwide: $40,000,000 Dan in Real Life Well, it has Steve Carell and Dane Cook in it, so all the teenagers will see it... Domestic: $50,000,000 Worldwide: $75,000,000 Enchanted Could do good. reminds me of the Princess diaries... Domestic: $80,000,000 Worldwide: $150,000,000 The Game Plan Well, it's the Rock, so they have the whole teenager thing going for them... Domestic: $70,000,000 Worldwide: $130,000,000 Hope I did that right...

You did great. And the box office is domestic. One of the things the Disney people were thinking about Pirates, is that it comes out 3 weeks after the release of Spiderman and Shrek and about 6 weeks before Harry Potter, they acutally expect it to outdo Spiderman and Shrek. I thoght Wild Hogs looked pretty funny from the trialer I saw and it does star John Travolta. Audiences are very fickled. I tried to go see all the movies last year, but some just did not appeal to me. We guess really low on Apocolypto and it did better than we thought, we also guessed way to high on Santa Clause 3. Up until that movie, we were in first place. Thanks for the help. There is still time if anyone else wants to weigh in. |

Wild Hogs was tough. Of course it may look funny, but I doubt it'll be big. Almost all these kinds of movies from Disney turn out to be financial and critical bombs. At World's End was another difficult one. I expect it to outgross Shrek. Out of the four of them that's the smallest one (Plus the trailer looks dumb). Spiderman is more difficult. It'll gross around the same as POTC. Harry Potter is the toughest one, though. It comes out a few weeks after the others, so all the hype from those ones will have died out by then. When it comes out HP will suck in all the audience. That's why POTC won't be as big. It has three other possible 900 million+ grossers to contend with. DMC didn't have any big movies to contend with, and that's why it was so big. |

Here are the guesses. My friend had the final say. Bridge to Terabitha: $90 mil. We are already at $57 on this one. Wild Hogs: $85 mil. I saw this, it was hilarious and it grossed $38 mil last weekend. Meet the Robinsons: $110 mil. POTC At Worlds End: $420 mil. Ratatouille: $235 - this one my friend went against my prediction. Underdog: $20 mil. Dan in Real Life: 75mil. Enchanted $100 mil and the Game Plan at $80mil. So now we will just wait and see what happens. Thanks for your help. |
