Woo hoo! I'm off to Tesco in a minute to prepare for this hallowed annual event. I'm going to spend half the night cooking pancakes and the rest of the night eating them.

Mostly I'll be having thin pancakes (crepes) with sugar and lemon juice but I might branch out with some other stuff too. Tell everyone your favourite pancake (thin or thick) and your favourite topping/filler.

I'm gonna make myself sick.

I like regular buttermilk pancakes, but not too fluffy. I can't eat very many of them if they are, and they give me hiccups. I prefer some sort of berry flavored syrup, but I also like maple.

SHROVE TUESDAY!!!

Woo-hoo! A day of sweetness before a day of no meat...

We had blueberry and buttermilk pancakes, and cranberry and orange pancakes, with ice-cream, maple and berry syrup and chocolate shavings...

Oh, it was good.

Ooh, I had mine with a healthy dose of sugar... or should that be unhealthy? either way it tasted great, and I had the lemon juice squeezed over it too, oooh, that's just so nice and sweet, although I probably used less sugar and juice this time than most years, since I do tend to go a bit extreme with the extras. :unsure:

:( We didn't have any pancakes today! Parents too busy, didnt get round to making the batter etc...

But we did have some on Sunday... And hopefully we're going to have some this coming weekend... A bit messed up, but at least we get the pancakes! (I'm not a piggy... Really... :lol:)

I think they're best as thin ones with sugar and lemon- that's what I always have. Although, in France one time, I did have jam on them... That was niiiiiice!

Pancake day? Now there's a holiday I wouldn't mind having.

Let's see - my pancake habits...
Dutch pancakes are always thin, and big. Pizza-size, or close to it. They're most commonly eaten with syrup. Not maple syrup - just syrup. (No idea what they make it from, actually. I'm thinking sugar beets.) A simple syrup or sugar pancake can be rolled up to make it easier to eat. With other pancakes, that's never done - mostly because the rolling up tends to not work with the different ingredients.

My preferred 'topping' for pancakes, way back in my non-veg days, was bacon. Topping's the wrong word for it, though; you bake the bacon first, then pour the batter over. Bacon pancakes can also be eaten with the above-mentioned syrup, which is surprisingly tasty. Sweet and salty - always a good combination. Now I either go for cheese pancakes (i.e. put cheese on top after turning the pancake over, so it melts), or apple pancakes (put thin slices of apple into the batter right after pouring it into the pan, pray that the whole thing doesn't fall apart when you turn it over, and add sugar and cinnamon when pancake is done). For a more exotic variety, I like to bake a plain pancake and put those little chunks of canned fruit on top, and whipped cream. Difficult to eat, but it's worth it.

I never would have thought of putting lemon juice on pancakes... Sounds good, though. I'll keep it in mind for future pancake encounters.

OK, the idea is that back in the times of Jebus and his merry posse they had forty days of fasting with no dairy or something like that. To get rid of all their remaining dairy produce they cooked it all up and ate it between Shrove Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. Then there was a forty day fast (when old JC went into the desert and was tempted by the devil).
If we delve into the religiousity of it all this is the beginning of Lent. Traditionally we should all be giving up some kind of nice foodstuffs from tomorrow (Ash Wednesday) until Easter Sunday.

The Shrove period has generally been shortened to just the Tuesday. Somehow pancake day has permeated the national consciousness (I can only speak for England) regardless of religious persuasion. I think it may be something to do with pancake tossing contests and adverts from the Jif lemon juice corporation.

I would like to point out that this knowledge is from a religious upbringing, not any kind of religious conviction on my part.

Now the science part ie. how I made dinner this evening.
(It should be noted that flour measurements are approximate as I don't currently have kitchen scales and have to guess based on previous experience.)


Pancakes

You will need.

Ingredients

6 oz (150g) of plain flour.
2 large eggs.
300 ml semi skimmed milk.
Pinch of salt.
Cooking oil (vegetable/sunflower/rapeseed/other, your choice).

Sugar (I find demerara sugar the nicest)
Lemon juice

Equipment

1 large mixing bowl
1 whisk (I have done this with a fork but whisks are so much better)
1 frying pan
1 measuring jug
1 sieve (a fine mesh sieve, not a colander)

Instructions

Sift the flour into the mixing bowl. Don't try and strain the last lumps through, just chuck them away.
Add the pinch of salt (if you want, it doesn't matter too much).
Add both of the eggs.
Start whisking the eggs into the flour while slowly adding the milk.
Once all the milk is in frantically whisk the whole lot up until there are no more lumps in it then add about a tablespoon of the cooking oil and whisk it for another minute or so.
By now it should be roughly the consistency of single cream. If it's too thick just add more milk (and whisk) until it's right.
Pour the whole lot into the measuring jug

Now let it settle for half an hour or so.

Stick some cooking oil in the frying pan and put it on a high heat.
When the pan is nice and hot, tip away any excess oil (literally just tip it down the sink, you don't need much, just enough to coat the bottom of the pan)

Give the batter mix a quick stir then put a blob of batter in the middle of the pan and swirl it around the frying pan trying to make it as even as possible (it should coat the bottom of the pan and shouldn't be more than about 3 or 4mm thick in the middle).

The batter will quickly start to cook and change colour, once it goes from looking wet and creamy to looking beige and more solid get a spatula and turn it over (making sure to lift it away from the pan gently so it doesn't tear).

Once it's golden brown on both sides (or as close as it gets, they generally look a bit patchy) stick it on a plate.

Make sure the pan is coated with a bit of oil before you make each one.

If you're making a lot (this batter can probably make ten or so) you might want to keep them on a plate in the oven on a low heat with a piece of kitchen towel separating each one.

Once you're done sprinkle them with sugar, douse them with lemon juice, roll them up and revel in the glory of the pancake.

This mixture is probably enough for two people. Add half as much for any additional people or halve it if it's just for one person.

The batter can be kept in the fridge for a day or two, just keep a tea towel over it and give it a stir before using it.

:blink: All of you guys really get into this pancake thing. I have to admit, I've never heard of pancake day here in the States, although I've heard of Lent. (Not something I practice, though) When I think of pancakes, I'm thinking IHOP. Like Dutch, I've never heard of putting lemon juice on pancakes. Unlike Dutch, I don't think I'd like it.

BTW Dutch, I love syrup on my bacon.

On saturday I was at IHOP and I got my favortie pancake. Chocolate with Chocolate Chips. (That's the only reason I'd every go there- it's the only meal worth 8-10 bucks) The only thing that could have been better besides less whipped cream was chocolate syrup. Triple chocolate. That would be freakin awesome.

I didn't get any pancakes yesterday because there was ermm..stuff going on... :unsure:

BUT my dad promised he'd make me some today :D I like the really thin flat ones with lemon and sugar.

I love threads like this. Learning about other people's customs while discussing yummy food - two brilliant topics in one.

What we do here pre-Lent is celebrate carnival (generally from Saturday to Tuesday). This basically means dressing up, drinking a lot of beer, and partying to what is in my humble opinion the worst music mankind has ever managed to produce. These celebrations are far more common and more elaborately celebrated in the south of the country (which isn't so weird if you consider that that is traditionally the Catholic part). I'm comfortably in the center of The Netherlands, so I don't really celebrate carnival. It's no big thing around here, plus I don't like beer and I hate carnival music, so... no. There's a tiny parade of sorts around here, and I do generally watch that, but that's as far as my 'celebrations' go. It's a pity I miss out on the dressing up, though... My Captain Jack hat still needs to be formally introduced to the world.

We also had pancakes yesterday - it was also Pancake Day in Denmark :D

in Denmark we usually make those thin crepes-like pancakes, and I made those yesterday too - with a little beer in the dow, which is always good *G* I had my pancakes with honey in them, and my boyfriend put butter and sugar on as he always does... yum they were good, and then I had the two last pancakes this morning...

I enjoyed the pancakes so much yesterday that we're having them again today. The joys of being an atheist. I am giving up sweets for lent though, it's one way I'll eat less sugar before the spring festival of Chocolatemas. I'm so pepped up on caffeine and sugar these days it's no wonder I'm not going to bed until 7am.
I guess sugar and lemon on pancakes doesn't help but I have eggs to use up.

By the way the recipe above is for crepe pancakes, try and make them as thin as you can, spread as evenly as you can across the bottom of the pan. Also all that took an age to type out so I expect all of you to try them at least once. You'll never know whether you'll like pancakes with sugar and lemon juice unless you try.

I do know about that shrove tuesday. Over here we call it Carnaval, or Vasteloavend for the insiders. No pancakes anywhere but lots of dressing up, listening to idiotic songs and doing "de polonaise" (stumbeling around in a line, holding shoulders), wich both fit well with all the beer drinking and shagging... just you're basic religious holiday.
