I think it's a good idea that we lay down some rules regarding appropriate language on the board. Parley has always been a board for all ages so it's a good idea to set some rules as what some people find acceptable, others find deeply offensive.

We will need to make sure that we make a reasonable standard. The board needs to remain family friendly without becoming so restricted that it's impossible to use normal, everyday language.

This has to be a decision and discussion between members, by the people, for the people. Eventually we should set up a poll to decide what can stay and what can go but for now we need to open up the floor and allow people to discuss the subject. Overall I think we should go with a majority vote as while it's impossible to please everyone I, for one, would like to see as many people represented as possible.

Before we start there are a couple of words that there is obviously no need to discuss.
C: The rude word for a lady's naughty bits.
F: The act between a mummy and a daddy when they love each other very much.
These are clearly off limits.

A lot of this will come down to personal interpretation of the words. As many of us have discussed (at length) in other threads, some nations find certain words far more offensive than others. As a board where so many nations are represented it would be good to have input from everyone as this concerns us all.

I hope no one thinks I'm out of line for suggesting this but the sooner we address the issue, the sooner it ceases to be an issue.

Some of the most rude and insulting lines of text one could conjure up do not necesarily include swear words to achieve the desired effect.

If defining a ruleset regarding appropriate language, wich in my eyes equals to defining the manner in wich we should and should not adress one another, i think we can include on this list:
- Racist remarks
- Making fun of illness and/or disabilities
- Bashing of believes and religious convictions

To my knowledge none of this has taken place on Parley yet, but it might be desired to make sure it never will.

I just wanted to bring to your attention that this is something that has been discussed in a thread opened by Alia a while back. Here it is. So you can add some of this input to your discussion as well.

EDIT: Will, I noticed you posted on there too. So nevermind, no need to remind anyone. :P

I am aware of that thread and that's why this one was created. After discussing it with people it was made clear that this needs to be a choice made by the members. Policy made by the people. Wouldn't you rather be part of the decision making process? I'm not just talking 'suggestion box' style but really discussing this and contributing to make a policy that we can all be happy with.

I think that its pretty much common sense. I mean, the only thing that I ever say that people have ever objected to is hell, as in 'what the hell, man?', but I think that most people don't really care that much. I agree that rasict and any kind of prejudiced remarks are restricted, but that should pretty much go anywhere, no? Basically, with me, anything that I post anywhere is 'clean', because I don't want people to look back at it later and go 'ew, what a narrow-minded little *terd*', savvy?

Sadly Wolf, that's not the case. What might seem common sense to some, others will overlook. What seems completely innocuous to one person may be deeply offensive to another. So far the board has existed on a common sense policy but apparently there have been enough complaints to warrant new rules on language. I also doubt that Hell is the most frequently reported word. That's why this thread exists.

This is not the first discussion on this topic. There was a thread suggesting new guidelines on colloquial language a few weeks ago and another one discussing swear words and their offensiveness a few months before that. This thread is now trying to put ideas from those threads into action.

The issue has clearly now gone beyond personal discretion and common sense. We have to work to create a uniform standard that takes into account as many people's views as possible. I'm all for free speech but on a board like this with so many people with such varied opinions on what's acceptable there needs to be some kind of code of conduct.

As we are all united under a common interest it's easy to forget how different we all are.
