Curious about Macs

I've always been a PC user. It's not that I have anything against Macs per se, but it's all I've known, and until recently, there were far more useful programs available for PCs than Macs.

But now, I've heard that Macs can play PC programs. Is this true? And if so, have they worked all the bugs out (because I'm sure there are some, as with any new technology). If it is true, I'm considering buying one, since I need a new computer anyways.

And for those of you who are familiar with both, is it difficult for a PC user to get used to a Mac? What are the main differences, assuming it would be reasonable to go into them all here?

And most importantly, would it be able to play Myst IV Revelation? :P

My aunt has always had Macs and she swears by them. I know about seven years ago she had an iMac and that could run Windows software like Office etc. A lot of software these days has options for PCs and Macs. They're certainly more reliable, they're faster, far less prone to crashing, freezing and other technical glitches associated with PCs. The only reason I don't have one is that I can't afford it.

I don't much about how well they run since I'm not very computer-savvy, but I've been used to PCs my whole life, and the computer lab I use on campus has Macs, so I can give you a little look as to how it's different using them.

I would say the biggest thing you would need to adjust to is different keyboard shortcuts. I use shortcuts a lot, so this was kind of frustrating at first. However, a lot of them are just the apple key instead of CTRL, so it wasn't as difficult as I thought it might be. Also, I don't know if this is a standard Mac thing, but the mouse they have in the computer lab doesn't have a left or right button; you just click the whole mouse. As a frequent user of right clicks, this was also frustrating. However, this may just be the special kind of mouse they got.

What else... Macs are very fast, so that's really nice. You can definitely load Windows Office and such onto Macs. Not sure about games, though. Oh, posting on these boards might be a little different. I'm pretty sure that Macs are picky about some of the tags. The few times I've tried to quote something in a post, I've had to push the quote buttons rather than just writing

. But maybe you always use the button, so that may not even matter. :P

Hmm, if you want to know anything else about using a Mac, just ask because I can't think of anything else offhand. I thought it would be hard to adjust at first, but it wasn't really.

Yeah, that no right-clicking the mouse really bothers me on a Mac.

Anyway, I don't know how often you play computer games that use the arrow keys, and maybe this is just from the old-fashioned Macs from when I was a kid, but they had the arrow keys in a line, rather than the three on bottom and the one on top. Made it really hard to play games. At least for me, anyway. But, like I said, that was a long time ago. Maybe they're different, now.

I really don't know much about crashing and speed and all that. Both PCs and Macs always worked fine for me in that regard. *shrug*

Yeah, I was noticing they were more expensive. One of the things I'm trying to decide is whether or not I can justify paying the extra money for it.

I don't use those often, so that wouldn't be a problem for me. But the right click on the mouse would take some getting used to.

That's good to know. I often use the quick reply box at the bottom, so I have to type it in.

I'll have to check into that. I don't do a lot of gaming, but I really want to play my Myst game that I bought just before my desktop PC crashed, and that uses the arrow keys a lot. Right now I'm using my laptop, which works fine for most things, but the graphics card isn't powerful enough to handle the game.

Plus, my kids have homework they're wanting to do, and the hubby is trying to look for another job, and they won't get off of my computer so I can do my pirate stuff. So I need a new computer. :P

I just of something else that's equally random, but it could affect you: I don't know if Macs have games on them! I mean, not the games you install, but games like Minesweeper and Solitaire. Personally, I sometimes need a 10 minute Minesweeper break from homework just to stay sane. And I can't figure out where those would be kept on a Mac. I don't know if you play those games, but I was concerned about the lack of them today at school. :D

Oh gosh, without Spider Solitaire, I would have literally gone insane years ago. It takes me 4 minutes to play one game (yup, I've played it enough to know that), and I found it was the perfect little break when I was going nuts from too much studying. :D

Yeah, I don't know if those are on Macs or not. :( I mean, there must be some way to et them... maybe not. I don't know. :(

I think MS might possibly own those games, so if they do, it's unlikely they would be on a Mac. I don't play them as often as I used to, but my hubby does.

I'm not positive now because it's been so long ago, but it seems like a while back I saw a place where you could download those games from the internet (probably along with a lot of spyware and such), and I think I was wondering why you would need to do that when they came standard on all computers. But I didn't think about Macs. That could be why.

Tomb, you can do Spider Solitaire in 4 minutes?! Is that four suites? If so, :worship:

Oh, no, that's on the easy level. The harder levels take much longer, but then that wouldn't have been a nice little break, that would have been a long, headbanging inducing break, lol.

Seriously, what do Mac people do when they want to right click? I never got it. :( There's no button for it, but there must be some way to do it. I'd hope so, anyway. I'm constantly going "Right click, open in new window."

 I've ALWAYS wondered the same thing, Tomb! Our school has all Macs, and so I've kinda developed a dislike for them in general bc my school has such crappy ones. I'm quite sure actual nice Macs are very cool and just as good if not better than a Windows PC, but *shrugs* ill never know! For now, at least. But yeah... at school, i find myself struggling without my handy right click button, what do you do?

I just got a MacBook after practically growing up on PCs. It's been an adjustment, but I can answer the right click question. Apple has the mighty mouse that you can configure to "right click". It's really awesome. It's still one giant button, but it senses where you're pressing. It's has four zones, the left side, the right side, the scroll, and the sides. Very spiffy.
