From now on, if you want to post on the imdb message boards you will have to do additional authentication. By having an Amazon.com account, credit card or by sms |

IMDb are probably just finding yet another way to purge certain elements from their board (copycats, sock puppets, trolls etc.). Unfortunately they manage to alienate the rest of their members at the same time. IMDb never really cared much for their members, they just used to leave us to our own devices at the beginning. Once a board reaches a certain size they need to have a way to better control membership and members. Personally I like the Something Awful approach where they really can ban you for just about anything but they do have over 90,000 members and charge $9.95 a pop for membership. Will |

I remember a while back they were trying to get people to give them their Amazon account IDs, and by extension, their credit card info for further verification. If you did, you got some ridiculous icon next to your username (Idk, maybe they're still doing that. Haven't been there in ages). Some people jumped right onboard. I was thinking then how crazy that was. I'm not just giving my credit card info out for ID purposes <_< I work for a credit card company, and I set up disputes all day long for charges that are put on card accounts that weren't authorized, or at least the cardmember didn't think they were authorized. The rule is, if you gave them your acct #, it's not fraud. And if there's some fine print somewhere that says that by giving your acct # you've signed up for some service or subscription, you're pretty much at the mercy of the merchant as to whether or not they're willing to cancel it. Merchants get what we call "continuous billing" authorizations, and credit card companies can't legally remove that once we've granted it to them for a certain amount of time (which may be years), even if you cancel your card account. I can't tell you how many times I've gone around and around with cardmembers who were angry because we've allowed charges to bill to a closed account, especially when the cardmember closed it specifically to stop those charges. Whenever a cardmember tells us they're cancelling the account to stop the charges, we make it very clear that if the merchant has a continuous billing authorization (you can tell because they bill the same charge every month, week, year, etc.) that still won't stop them. But they rarely listen, or if they do, once again, they're angry. Most upstanding merchants will stop billing you upon cancellation, but not all of them, and recourse is limited. AOL is notorious for being difficult to cancel. Knowing that, I'm very careful about who I give my credit info to, and I can't stress enough READ THE FINE PRINT! *Satisfied with her daily credit lesson, she gets off of her soapbox and returns to other nonsense.* |

I haven't signed up for an account and it lets me bump posts still...I think it's for new users only. Here, I copied and pasted the notice.
Of course, I may just be missing something. |

From what Brook posted, it does seem to be new users only. Actually, I saw that a little while back but I didn't think anything of it since I already have an account. They just seem to be making things more complicated for new members. But then, for all we know, we could be next. |

When people get their accounts deleted they can sign up again, well not so much now, so it is good as long as it doesn't make things hard for older users, which it doesn't seem it does. |

That's good when you have many members with changing IPs. Collect, ban.. collect, ban... collect, ban... As for the additional authentication... I understand, really, but something tells me it's just taking the lazy way out. They could keep a more active control over their boards - but no, they choose to do this instead. I just read in the papers that a lot of kids' sites over here have shut down their chat section because of sexual predators preying on the kiddies. They had the same choice: piss off the members and make things more annoying for them - or put in a little more manpower and actually keep an eye on the chats. Naturally the members bit the dust. And it may seem like the most logical choice for the sites, but I'm really not sure it is. There are plenty of other places people can go that will give them the little bit of freedom that you're denying them. So you're going to lose out on lots of members, and lots of advertising as a result. Not a smart move. Man, I remember when you didn't even have to be a member to read the IMDb message boards... If I hadn't been able to read the boards, I never would have registered. (And the world would have been a different place. :P) |

I agree, DutchS. IMDB just seems to have a lack of caring or control for their boards, often... imposing stupid rules and regulations in place of actually spending more time on it. It's kind of ridiculous. And you're right, they'll probably lose members over it. Well, they lost all of us already, and what did it give way to? A bunch of trolls rule the POTC boards over there now, along with this crazy team things going on which I gave up trying to understand a while ago. I only go back there for any diamond in the ruff type of information on AWE i rarely ever find there anymore.
Lol, thats actually really funny, because it was the opposite for me! I joined because i COULDN'T read them, hahaha. I saw what the topics were on, spoilers and such for DMC, and I wanted to know what was going on so I made myself an account to post and find information. Little did I know I'd make so many great friends off of it!

Same here Dish. I had reservations about joining and remember being a little miffed that I had to, but I did. I was trying to find info on AWE, which didn't even have a name at that time. |

I joined because I'd read the boards and liked the people (aka YOU) and wanted to put my own two cents in. Ahh, the good ol' days when I was a wee fourteen-year-old known as Hawk...Wow. That almost makes me feel...old. *reminisces* I even remember one time when Cold and I got into it over something like someone was leaving, or was being driven away...I thought that was the end of the boards as I knew them. And yet...here we are! Pffff. Who needs IMDb anymore when we've got Parley (thanks to Dutch!)? |
