I just finished the Wii game of Tangled and it was so much fun! If you've seen the movie and loved it like I did, you would love this game. You can switch off playing Rapunzel and Flynn. If you're Rapunzel, you can swing across things with your hair and smack people over the head with a frying pan. Flynn digs for treasure and can climb up Rapunzel's hair when he can't jump up somewhere. And Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi do the voices, and they're funny and cute just like in the movie. It was challenging enough, but not so hard that a rusty gamer like myself could actually enjoy it.

[/Disney gushing moment] :P

Ooh, games. I've been playing a few lately. Here's just a few:

Sims 3 (Xbox 360) - Awesome game, just like Sims 2 only far superior. Sims can now have personality traits (eg. good, evil, technophobe, genius, bookworm) and they can now fish and plant seeds. Things are just generally better. I did at first struggle a little to get the hang of the controls, but it became second nature within a few hours of playing.

A World of Keflings (Xbox 360) - Very cute game and sequel to A Kingdom for Keflings. In case you never heard of it (or have to struggle around with a Playstation 3, poor you) I'll explain a bit. Your avatar is a giant in this quaint little world with lots of little people called Keflings and you have to help these little Keflings build a kingdom. You do this by assigning Keflings to gather resources and then you build buildings in order to refine the basic resources and, ultimately, be able to build a castle. There's no bad guys to shoot or anything like that, so it's just mindless fun to fill a few hours with.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (Xbox 360) - I played this with Steven but it was frustrating at times. I just played as Wolverine as he slashed enemies awesomely.

Cake Mania 3 (PC) - Umm, yeah. I play Cake Mania. And I finished the game too. I think I'm pretty good at it, actually, but I'll say no more. :D

Well, ever since Lord of the Rings Online came out, I've been eyeing it, considering whether or not to get it. But now that its gone f2p (free to play), I went ahead and downloaded it. My goodness, it is fun! But I've sword that I will not spend any money on buying Turbine points to get stuff in their store (although I may likely break when I've done everything in Bree-land and wish to expand into the expansions (how's that for a horrid sentence?).

What I love in this game versus many others is the landscapes. They are absolutely beautiful, and the mood/location music is good as well (although, I do have to say that I think EQ2 does win out on the soundtrack, if only because I like the fact that the battles have better music, and one that is based on how difficult of an opponent you are fighting, plus, Chardok wins for best location music ever. Even over the Commonlands).

They also have this really nifty music system. I've done games where you've done music/played as musicians (the old Star Wars Galaxies, pre-that terrible profession change fiasco, which I will never forgive them for because. They. Cut. My. Class. RIP, Creature Handlers). When you played songs there, they were prerecorded music they had, and you had the option to add "flourishes" to it. Not with LORTO. When they say play music...they really mean it. Numbers 1-8 on your keypad is the scale, and you use other keys to change the octave. So once I bought a lute and and sat down in Bree I naturally chose to play the most inappropriate music possible (no, not Britney Spears), the Imperial March. Well, with a few mistakes, and much trial and error.

Character customisation isn't too hot either, when it comes to facial features and the like. I didn't expect stuff to be like Star Trek Online (which has got the best customisation I've ever seen), but I was hoping for something akin to EQ2, where you could ajust eyes a bit, the jawline, eyebrows...instead you get to pick from designed faces. I believe that is how WoW does it, but just because WoW does it does not make it good (in fact, it's probably an argument against it). You do get to choose where your character is from (beyond just their races), and for the Elves, you get quite a few choices, ones drawing from the book-lore, and not just like the movies. And for those elves, the hair colour ranges adjust slightly depending on where you are from.

The stories you go through are fun and engaging, and for someone like me who prefers solo play (unless doing PvP or battlegrounds type stuff), it was great to have the storyline quests limited to solo only (so far, I believe that changes later on). Though, I have to admit I'm slightly irked that for a few of them they require dealing with one character that really bothers me

Spoiler: click to toggle

The community is nice and fun, too, and I lucked out on choosing a server at random (I managed to pick the one with lots of RP, which is cool) and I rarely see much drama or stuff (unlike my EQ2 one, though to be fair, I've been on that server since the beginning, and then took a hiatus, in which time the drama came).

But it's really nice, at least for the 21 levels I've done so far.

Aw, man. I've just been reading back through this thread from the beginning. This included my first ever playthrough of Oblivion with 'I don't normally like Tolkienesque-swordwaggling-orc-slaying RPGs but this one seems pretty good'.
I've subsequently wasted thousands of hours of my life playing games like Oblivion, Two Worlds, Dragon Age, Dragon Age: Awakenings, Fable II and Fable III. I've just started playing Two Worlds II, I have Dragon Age 2 to play after that and I still have to get around to playing Gothic 4: Arcania and Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga.

That's only the daggers-and-magic stuff, I haven't even covered the Fallouts, The Mass Effects and the Red Dead Redemptions.

I've now revisited the genesis of this tragic addiction, I can pinpoint exactly where my life just stopped.

I'm currently playing Two Worlds II and not getting laid or having friends.

Having finally finished Two Worlds 2 (having spent at least 72 hours on it), I moved onto Dragon Age II.

It's not as long as I would have expected although I think that's partly due to me spending every waking hour on it until I finished the game. It doesn't seem to have the variety of the first game, a lot of the areas are carbon copies of others in the game but it's so engaging. There are pretty much only three places to be, giant city during the day, giant city during the night and mountain (incorporating caves and Deep Roads) but with the fact it's over the space of a decade, it maybe has more depth but less breadth than its predecessor.

I'm not a particularly tactical player so I always tend to go with the Warrior class and build my health and strength up until I'm just a tank. Even so, I had difficulties with quite a few of the boss fights (rock monster, Qunari and the unexpectedly huge dragon) but as with all Bioware games, combat is usually the least of my priorities. I ran around the world talking to everyone I possibly could, doing every available mission and then relentlessly hit on the terrorist mage until we declared our undying love and moved in together.

In all, it's a darker, more oppressive feeling game than the first. It does work a bit better in that your character actually verbalises your speech choices (Like ME's Shepard) rather than standing there like a mute idiot. It's a shame there's no communal area that everyone gathers in so you have to roam the city whenever you want to ask members of your team anything personal. The disturbing/hilarious sex scene montages are gone, replaced with dialogue that could induce a diabetic coma with a fade to black.

I don't know whether I liked it as much as the first one. Like Mass Effects 1 and 2, I think that each Dragon Age has elements of its own that are better and those that are worse than the other. Either way, I'm still going to start playing it again, probably tomorrow.

For most of the last week, by night I've been a Tomb Raider. Or, playing as a lady who raids tombs. And yes, that is the new one which confusingly has the same title as the original game.

I enjoyed playing it, even if at some points somewhere nearer the end of the game Lara had a few rooms where she was all alone and solving puzzles in them and I realised that I'm playing a Tomb Raider game. It was kind of weird to find parts that reminded me of the older games, as so much of the rest of the game wasn't like them at all. It was mostly like Call of Duty for people who want to explore. And Arkham Asylum for people who want Batman to shoot people in the face. So very much reminded me of the Batman games, from the leveling up skills and modifying tools, to Lara's detective mode survival sense thingy. Even the map system with treasure locations was pretty much the same. Not a bad thing as the Batman games are awesome, I think somewhere I just missed a bit of originality. Oh well, still fun. I guess the sequel will improve on things a bit, whenever that comes out.

Steven was awesome, lucky and just plain amazing by spotting and buying the newest Tomb Raider in our local Cash Converters. R180 for a relatively new game is not to be sneezed at. :yay:

Now, my review:

Many years ago, I've heard so much about this game called "Tomb Raider". But I never played it until that day my cousin allowed me on her computer ... Hang on, I'm getting all sentimental and weird and I shall stop that.

I've loved Lara and her tombs since the first moment I pressed the "up" key and ran her into the nearest wall. I've seen her and her tombs change over the years. But now... she's rebooted. She's no longer the Lara I know. The Lara I know won't ever be seen again. Instead, it's the Lara of a parallel universe. I'm a bit gutted. I'll miss old Lara.

That said, I do like this parallel universe Lara. I think a lot of it has to do with the actress. I forgot her name. She really sold all the trauma this girl goes through. Plus, new Lara's badass.

The story was vastly different than I expected. I was thinking she would be the only survivor of a shipwreck, explore a mysterious island and survive until she gets rescued but not before she battles some dragon or something. I was disappointed to see how many other characters were around. Some fans complained about Zip and Alister in Legend and Underworld. I wonder what they thought of Roth, Reyes, Sam, Jonah, Grim, Alex and all the other NPCs. Granted, they weren't talking nonstop through some earpiece but at least Zip and Alister were miles away.

Controlling Lara was great, I couldn't be happier with the way she climbed, jumped, ran and such.

But now on to what I didn't like.

There's a very good reason I don't play stuff like Call of Duty on the Xbox: I suck at it. Can't shoot worth a darn. Yet this was basically Call of Duty. There were people shooting at Lara around every corner.
Trying to score points with some shooty fanbase is fine and all but you might lose some people who prefer to just shoot a bat or two with good old autoaim while, you know, raiding tombs. In this game, tombs were called "optional". I hope the next game will be less shooting and more raiding. It's in the title after all. But I doubt they'd listen to the minority that is me. Just save me the pain by calling the next game "Call Of Optional Tomb Raiding Duty".

I have other little nitpicky problems with the game but I think that was my main problem.

Funny enough, I had quite a few headshots. I think the targeting system is a bit wonky. In fact, I know it is. I shot an arrow right behind a chicken yet killed it. I knew there had to be a problem when I kept getting headshots. :P

All in all, good game, I'm replaying it already. But it lacked what I need from a TR game. Solitude, tomb raiding and more lung capacity.

I loved the new Tomb Raider, it's bloody and brutal, and very much a product of its time. Everything's got to be bloodier and grittier these days, but not necessarily the worse for it. I could have done with some more actual tomb raiding, but that didn't actually stop me enjoying the game. When the original Tomb Raider came out, it was something new. These days, everything's a copy of a bastard child of a copy. It's interesting that it's taken some obvious cues from Uncharted, when Uncharted itself was a really blatant blend of Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones.

Su, the only thing I can say if you suck at aiming on the Xbox is that it comes with practice. I sucked when I first started playing console games, but it's the same as with everything, the more you do it, the better you get.

The last games I played were replays of Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2. I can't think of any remarkable games that have come out recently that I'm desperate to play so if anybody has any recommendations, please let me know.

That's the truth. Although, I think my problem is that I started off many years ago with Call of Duty and Medal of Honor on the PC. I'm a crack shot with a mouse and an analog stick is still something I'm not that good with all these years later. Or, it could be that the AI turned faster and more intelligent and where I used to be able to shoot a slow idiot in the head, I can't handle AI which is now a lot better at gaming than I am.

I can't really recommend any games, I've not played anything recently which I think you might enjoy. Although, I've heard of a game recently which sounds like a lot of fun. It's called Watch Dogs and apparently it's about hacking any device you can find. That sounds like fun. And made by the guys who made Assassin's Creed so I'd like to think it's like Altair and Ezio going around hacking stuff.

During the busy month of November, Steven found me a copy of Minecraft for the Xbox. Mining bliss. Whenever I get the chance, I'm underground finding me some Coal, Iron and sometimes even a tiny bit of gold. It's terribly soothing when you play it on Peaceful mode and I get a fright every time a pickaxe or spade breaks.

I've also been playing Pokemon Y recently. The series just gets better and better.

Steven got himself a Spider-Man game and I played a little bit of it. It felt a lot like Batman: Arkham Asylum/City but I felt it was an inferior copy and lost interest too quickly. It was fun to swing around the city on webs for a while, though.

I watched Steven play Lego Batman 2 the past few weeks but can't be the Robin to his Batman as he's trying to get the achievements you can only get when you're playing one player. Boo. :(

We're looking forward to the Lego Marvel. Well, it's already out but we're trying to stretch our Rands a little and it can wait for the next paycheck.

I remember seeing something about Watch Dogs, but I'll probably wait until that's in the 2 for £25 section on Zavvi. Being made by the Assassin's Creed team actually makes me less interested. I really wanted to like those games, but I was really disappointed; the first one was OK, but I couldn't get on with the second one. I didn't like the whole Animus thing, I actually think they would have been better games if it had just been about being an assassin in olden times. I found that as soon as it reminded me that Desmond was essentially playing through genetic memories in the Animus, it totally took me out of the game and as such, lacked immersion.

Su, if you like soothing games to while away a bit of time, I heartily recommend Viva Pinata. It's all about running a garden, then getting animals to come and live in your garden, turning bad animals into good animals, and occasionally hitting a nuisance with a spade until it goes away. It's just a really nice game, totally child-suitable and a good change from all the blood and violence in some of the other games I play.

I need to get some more of the Spider-Man games, I do enjoy web-swinging my way through Manhattan. I think the last one I played was Web Of Shadows, and I didn't quite finish it as my mother and sister came to visit and they're not into watching me fight crime in a spandex suit, apparently. I think a few Spidey games have come out since then, so maybe I'll have a look at what's going cheap after Christmas.

As much as I enjoyed some of the Lego games, I don't think I'll be investing in any more until Wango's older. It'll be good to have something 'new' to play together, when he's old enough to do anything other than ruining the Netflix experience for me. Thanks to him understanding the play/pause button, and how to rewind, I've seen the first 40 seconds of Pocahontas approximately 443 times.

I quite liked the sci-fi stuff in Assassin's Creed. For me the annoying part of it and the sequel was playing through so much just to get a cliffhanger. It's interesting enough I guess, but it's also so expensive to get resolution. I wasn't going to play more, as much as I do like the sounds of some of the sequels. Like the pirates one. Assassin pirates... I may try it one day. Even though it most likely has another cliffhanger.

Just now I finally reached 100% completion with Lego Batman 2. It was a fun game, but I do miss the simplicity of the older Lego games. This one had an entire Gotham City to explore and find stuff in, which is fun at times, but it makes casually playing far more difficult as it took a while to find all the score multipliers. And flying in the city isn't so easy when trying to do anything other than speed from one end to the other. Getting to a rooftop is annoying at times. Also, I was disappointed that it took so long to unlock other characters. With Lego games I like to get new people and replay levels quite quickly, but I only had Batman and Robin for the first half of the game. Superman I unlocked at the midway point I think, and the rest of the Justice League in the last two levels. Makes replaying pointless. But once I got a whole bunch of characters and could replay with them, that was awesome.

Another annoyance was that achievements were locked to single player. That wasn't fair, as these games are so much fun in co-op mode.

Oh well, at least there was finally a checkpoint system where I could save and switch off in big levels. And it's always fun playing as superheroes. I just hope that Lego Marvel won't be as stingy when it comes to giving out characters.

Also recently I played The Amazing Spider-Man. I have to deal with my need to do comic book related stuff in some way, and since I struggle so much to find comic books here, and it's been long enough since release to find a cheap copy, I thought why not. I do like swinging around a city. I did that all the time in the first Spider-Man movie game, and I'm pretty sure that didn't have collectables and side-missions to give a point to swinging.

I liked it, the story wasn't a straight movie adaptation, but more of a kind of sequel. One which is probably going to be meaningless when the actual sequel comes out since sequel Rhino is completely different to the game version. It was also fun as someone who grew up with the 90's cartoon seeing where the plot was going. The combat was a lot like the Arkham games, only maybe a bit more simpler. I did like the web attacks, Batman can't cocoon a whole bunch of enemies so there's those differences. Mainly I was just wasting hours swinging around the huge shiny city collecting comic book pages and doing random side-missions. What was nice was one of the side-missions which kept popping up had Bruce Campbell voicing a character, making up for his lack of appearance in the movie itself.

I also liked that there were extra suits to collect. I do like picking different versions of Spidey, and since the movie version got damaged so quickly with my way of playing, it was nice I didn't have to swing around with a slightly bleeding and shirtless Spidey as that looked weird.

So now with Lego done, I still have stuff to collect inside the missions of Spider-Man. The map is all cleaned of items, but the levels still have some things to find. I'm such a nerd when it comes to 100%ing something.

I actually like it when achievements are in single player, I find I miss out on so many because they're contingent on multiplayer campaigns and missions. I don't mind a co-op game like the Lego ones now and then, but I don't ever play online with strangers as I just don't play well with others. I like plot, not pointless, endless capture-the-flag matches and I really object to losing out because I don't want to do that. Mass Effect 3 really pissed me off for that reason, they made achievements and the whole galactic readiness thing based on online play, despite the fact the Mass Effect games had always been single player up to that point.

I haven't had much opportunity to play games of late but I did make a point of playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. I've spent about five years of my life playing one or other of the previous Dragon Age games on repeat and I really like the universe. I can't say I like this game as much, even though it's more varied, bigger, and feels like there's much more purpose and urgency to the plot than the previous games. Despite the fact that Bioware put the release date back by over a year, the list of known bugs is huge. Unfortunately, a lot of these involve missions not triggering so you miss out on loyalty missions and backstories for various people and party members. I'm not keen on the War Room setup either, you have to send some of your people to go and do things to garner support or supplies and all of this is done in real time. That's not a problem when it's ten or twenty minutes, it's just annoying when it's 15 hours and you want to do other things. Thankfully, I discovered that if I unplug the Xbox from the internet, then change the time and date in the system settings, I can get past that whole waiting malarkey. Unfortunately, that does involve a lot of Save-Exit-Fiddle-Load-Rinse-Repeat action but that's the price of progress. I still haven't finished it as I just don't have the time to dedicate to it, from what I've played so far I do like it but there's plenty of room for improvement.
