I wanted to post this for ages and now I am finally posting it.
I learned about this occurrence a few years back and I didn't see my eyes the same afterwards. In fact, I went when I first saw this. But I quite like it now. ![]() "What is that crazy lady on about?" I'm talking of ... Your blind spot. Apparently every eye has it. It's a part of your eye inside that doesn't have rods and cones and therefore it can't see at all. BUT amazingly your brain "colours in" that little part that you can't see and that's why you feel like you have 20/20 vision. (If you have 20/20 vision, that is) Here, you can see it for yourself. Sit close to your screen. Not nose-up-against-it close, but just close. See the "line" with an x and o on it? Bottom of this post, in case you're missing it. Now, close your right eye and stare at the little "o" with your left eye. You can adjust the space between your head and screen until, miraculously, the "x" disappears! Yet you still feel like you're seeing a line, right? That's your blind spot in action. It also works with the other eye, just close your left eye and stare at the "x". --------------x--------------------------------------------o--------------- |

I'm making myself dizzy testing that, but I do know there's a point where we can't see, I have to be more careful as I almost had some accidents due to that happening, stupid just out of visual range things which speed very quickly towards people.
Edit: I just looked again from my usual distance, both eyes open and by looking at one the other disappeared, yes, just by looking normally, should I be scared?

That's awesome, Su! I've seen stuff like this in museums, but it worked a lot quicker and a lot easier for me on the computer. |

I heard about this once too, just in a different way - one of the old famous Danish kings knew this, and he had a thing with when he talked to his servants or people very much below him, he looked at them in such a way that their heads would be in the "blind spot" and he couldn't see their heads... probably just a story, but it's still fun

Hm... Usually I can get these things to work really quickly, but for some reason that little "x" won't go away, no matter what distance from the screen I put my head. My eyes are broken, lol. But, yeah, I've been doing these for a while. I always love making the dot disappear... when it does. *grumbles that the "x" won't disappear*

Ooh, it works!
That's nifty. I had to get pretty close, though. Like a foot away.
I had reading glasses in elementary school, and I'd always look over them so that the teacher's head would be cut off - not so much because I hated the guy as because I was bored.

I tried this before, but I couldn't get it to work. It worked this time, though. I love optical illusions. |

Weird. Thats like when you can 'see through' your finger if you look at it through a paper towel thing, or however you do it. |
