List of Similarities

Sure, its been said before, and most people recognize the many similarites, especially between DMC and ESB, but here's a nice picturey list of things that occur in both sagas. Hopefully Pirates won't follow suit with a prequel trilogy, but, quite honestly, I'd rather see that than a Pirates 4.

One they did not mention, though is very obvious to most, is that similarly, both films were under fire by the media until right before the release, and then they both exploded onto the culture, made tons of money, and were both self-contained stories with no need of a sequel, while both sequels are giant, magnificent set-ups for the 3rd chapter, and is ironically the reason that many people don't like either of the 2nd parts.

Wow that was awesome.. I never thought of it that way. I think a prequel would actually be cool though.... I mean we could learn so much more about the main characters and see were they came from I think it would give a much better scenario on what was going on before CotBP. But there were some wicked cool similarities between POTC and SW my absolute favorite being the bit about the "not so smart natives" Ha Ha!

I think some of their similarities were a tad of a stretch. Many stories have the hero and anti-hero types, and Star Wars and PotC aren't alone or unique in that regard--it is something that has far predated both.

With Star Wars, my favorite one was Empire Strikes Back, the dialog was good, the action was good, and the Han/Leia interactions were just hilarious. Lucas was right to have others responsible for the screen-writing, and directing. Star Wars was good, but...for many of us, we weren't around when the movies first came out. I don't ever remember which movie I watched first, I can't even remember a time when I didn't know the story to Star Wars or what it was about. Star Wars has always been Star Wars...and maybe that is the reason why what I like in one, I don't necessarily like in the other.

I saw PotC as they came out--many of us have, we've waited for the sequels, and that isn't exactly an experience that is duplicated for Star Wars. Star Wars has always just been as it was--I never analyzed it as closely as PotC (except for an English class), although I did with the prequel episodes which, did not live up to expectations for me. Well, RotS was fine by me, I liked it's darker feeling and the story idea of a hero falling has always held great interest to me, since just figuring out what could drive one to do that...it's a supremely fascinating topic--at least from the point of view of how one might write or RP such a thing.

With PotC, the only movie I enjoyed was the first one, and contrasting that with Star Wars--I like all (original trilogy)...it's somewhat hard to compare them--of course one was a fond childhood thing, the other was an obession that...didn't seem to work out so well.

Yes, the basic hero's journey and all that are normal, but some of the stuff is legitimately eerily similar. Han and Jack, especially. Same kinda' roguish-ness, both die in part 2, beginning of part 3 is going to resuce them, end up being good guys, but still bad-ass anyway. That'd make Gibbs Chewie though... and Pintel and Ragetti are Artoo and Threepio... hmm. Interesting.

Yeah, though, most of the similarities can be made with lots of stuff. Thankfully Pirates didn't just carbon-copy Star Wars like Eragon did...

I've read stuff like this before - there was an article a while back in Empire magazine talking about this subject. There are parallels, I'll admit, but I can't help but think peope are just doing it because they're both trilogies. Though it never happened to Lord of the Rings.:D

I can't imagine, as much as we love it, Pirates having the same impact as Star Wars has either. People frequently talk about things being similar to Star Wars - bad guys being like Darth Vader, or the roguish qualities that wolfarcher pointed out.
