Problem!; Hideous, wretched computer...

Okay, so I've got a fairly big problem. My computer crashed a little while ago and now I can't get it to boot up again. Every time I try, it tells me that an error was detected and Windows shut down to protect itself from damage. I've tried going back to my "options" menu and trying each and every freakin' option they've given me, from "Start Windows Normally" to "Safe Mode" to "Last Good Configuration," and every time the blue error screen keeps coming back up and saying it's shut itself down. I've also tried turning it off and leaving it off for a while, then also turning the entire power strip off for a while. Still no go.

When it crashed, I was in the middle of playing Sims 2, which I regularly do. I don't even remember what the little error box said when it popped up, because it sometimes happens when I'm playing that game, and I just shut down and restart, no problemo. This time it's different, and I don't know what to do. I'm having to use my parents' computer at the moment (NOT good, they'll flip out if they know my computer's crashed), and i NEED to figure out what's wrong.

ETA: One thing that the blue screen did say up at the top was:

(?)OUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I don't know what the first part of that word is, because my screen cut off the first couple of letters of each paragraph, like it wasn't centered correctly or something.

Can anyone help me?

I've had that problem with my laptop before, if what it says is "Unmountable Boot Volume." Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what caused it, or how I fixed it, but I'll tell you what I did. First of all, I suspect it had something to do with the fan in my laptop dying. My computer kept overheating and I think that contributed a lot because since I got the fan replaced, it's never happened again.

Okay, first of all, the first thing I did was leave my computer alone for a few days. I didn't even bother trying to turn it on. Sorry, not the best advice. However, I finally got it to boot up in Safe Mode after doing that. When I did, Windows gave me this option to fix my computer. I'm sorry I don't remember the name, it's something like Autofix, but basically what it does is ask you to pick a date for the computer to revert to. It will restart the computer as it was on a date in the past. If you've saved anything on your computer since then, it will still be there, but it will start it up as if it was, say, last Friday. I don't know how it works, but that's what it asked if I wanted to do. I tried it and it fixed it, but I don't know how or why.

Anyway, sorry I couldn't be more help. I remember exactly how frustrating that was. Hopefully someone wiith much more knowledge of computers than I will come along.

No, no, thank you SO much! Thank you for answering at all! I sat down here for a couple of hours after posting this last night and got a little panicky after no one seemed to know what to do.

I'll try leaving it alone for a while, I do seem to remember something like this happening before a couple of years ago... I don't know if it was the same exact problem, but I do remember that when I left it off for a while, it came up okay finally. I guess I'll just wait a few days rather than hours.

Thanks again so much!

*sigh*

Well, I've tried leaving it alone for two straight days, and it's still coming up with the blue screen and all. I'm at my wit's end.

I suppose I'll have to suck it up and call Dell tomorrow.

How's stuff going with the computer now? Did you call Dell and get any helpful solutions?

BACK UP AND RUNNING, BABY!!!!

Okay, so I was lazy... I waited and waited to call Dell. I hate getting on the phone, honestly, I'm actualy afraid of it. I don't even like calling my mother at her office.

So I called yesterday, and they said I'd need a Windows XP Reinstallation Disc, which of course, I didn't have. They said that without the disc, my only other option would be a complete system reconfiguration, and I'd lose EVERYTHING. NOT an option, I'm sorry.

So they sent me a new disc. It came tody - I was shocked, I'd been told 3-5 business days. I figured I'd be lucky if I was back up and running by Saturday.

Anyway, I got the CD, called Dell back and got them to take me through the steps and VIOLA! I'm back, baby, YEAH!

Finally, it's been nearly a month. (My own fault, I know... I'm the ultimate procrastinator.)

Well I'm glad to hear that it was all sorted and stuff. That's good news. A screwy computer is the last thing anyone really needs to deal with...well, unless you're paid to deal with that stuff. Then unfortunately, it's a sort of necessary thing.

I'm glad you're back, Stormy!!! Good thing everything worked out and you didn't lose everything. If that happened to me (losing everything, I mean) I think I'd have a panic attack, lol. Anyway, it's great to see you!

You too, Tomb! I've been around, but on my mom's computer, so my time has been rather sparse...

But I'm BACK! And I'm glad you're back, too.

If I'd lost everything, I'd have been very, VERY upset.

Losing stuff is horrible. It's bad to lose a load of MP3s, or a ton of pictures (because either recapping or trying to find them all if they are stuff from online and the like is horrible, or if they are pictures you took of things--that's even worse)...and then other written things you have on there...man, if I lost the stuff on here I would be devastated.

That's why it's always a good reason to back up what you do have. See--I know this, but none of my stuff is actually backed up. Well...some of it is. I should probably buy some CD's and start backing up all of my newer files.

Yeah....losing stuff is horrible. My old computer had a hard drive crash, but luckily I had most of my stuff on an external hard drive. I can't recommend those enough! I'm not sure if it's feasible for a laptop, but for a desktop it's a great investment! Even if the entire PC drive goes, all your data, pictures, etc. will be safe and sound. :)

Wow, I may need to look into that.. I have a lot of important stuff on my comp, not to mention a vast collection of Avatars that I've collected... Er, okay, stolen... And wallpapers, random pics... I'd have an absolute fit if I lost it all.

Exactly what should I be looking for, like as in product, brand names, etc.?

You probably want to find out what stuff they have in stores around you (unless you'd prefer to buy them online), and make sure that that stuff's all compatible with what you have, and also check them out online--there are loads of sites that review those types of products and can tell you things about them like any little issues or quirks they might have, and stuff like that.

I did a quick google search, and found this on PC magazine, about a few of them.
