I thought I'd let people know part of what I got to over the summer, while I was awol.

I decided to take up some painting, which was interesting, because I really haven't properly done painting since I was in elementary school, and they let us do fingerpainting. Well, aside from helping to repaint furniture and the odd wall in the house, but the latter is definitely not what I'd call fun.

Previously, the summer before this one, my sister and I had talked about doing a series of wooden painted signs for places--and with the last Harry Potter book coming out, and with the local bookstore holding a competition for it, we decided to do a sign for one of the shops in Diagon Alley. So we did Quality Quidditch Supplies and we had a load of fun doing that. I designed the cutout shape, cut it, sanded it, etc, and my sister did most of the painting (she did the snitch which was the hardest part, I did the lettering.

So this summer we discussed painting again, but since she didn't like trying to paint over the wood (she didn't like the texture, and to be fair...the wood was uneven and not the highest quality, we were just using scraps), we decided to go for canvas.

So this summer I did my first painting, and I was going to attempt the Black Pearl, but I couldn't find any good reference photos I liked, so I found reference photos of the USS Constitution, and painted her.

I got overly ambitious at that point, thinking that if I could manage a ship decently after never painting on canvas before...how hard could a human be (really, really hard, it turns out, and this is a great example of why one should attempt to be modest), so I tackled painting Captain John Hart (played by James Marsters) from Torchwood. Not my greatest. Nor one of my best (of...three or so)...but I figured I'd throw them out here so people could see them.

I think I've seen those last two before, but I'll say it again, they're very nice. I still love the colors you used with the ship. It looks dramatic. I envy you. Paint is not my medium.

The ship one is gorgeous, great colours.

And the Quidditch sign is enchanting, I'm tempted to make one for my bedroom door.

I find that wood signs are under-appreciated in terms of art, and I'd totally support it if people make more of those. It's something slightly more unusual to decorate your room (or door with), but it is a bit of an interesting conversation piece, and it does last better than posters. :)

I did another painting this week, a smaller one for latin class (the assignment was to write 2-3 sentences dealing with the fall of Troy and then somehow illustrate it), and mine was regarding the death of Achilles or:

"Paris Achillem stantem pro muris Troiae videt. Apollo Paradis sagittam ducit, et illa Achillis calcem percutit."

"Paris sees Achilles standing before the walls of Troy. Apollo guides the arrow of Paris, and it strikes Achilles' heel."

I wasn't as happy with it as either of the previous paintings, especially since the colors don't show up true on the computer. Any chance anyone knows a good way to get pictures of painting to load well onto a computer? Is there some better method than a digital camera?

A scanner might do well, depending on the quality. Very, very impressive, in any case. I'm not artistic enough in that direction. Great work!

A scanner sounds good--mine's out of commission at the moment, nor is it quite large enough to scan stuff, but I think the library might have some of those resources.

Double post! I swear, the last painting for a while. I might actually have gotten it all out of my system. Another ship this time.

Thank you! :)

I really wish that I had started painting a bit sooner than towards the end of university, but...at the very least it's a fun hobby.

Digital painting. It's far less complex than my other digital paintings, and seems less complex than the acrylics, but longer to do than the acrylics. This one is more about the scene, not just reproducing a portrait of a person.

My painting time or graphics time has become my de-stressing hobby, and now that I've got a tablet to work with, I've been able to finish another digital painting.

Using a tablet is so much easier than a mouse. I wish that I had switched over sooner.

This painting is fantasy, and a sort of attempt to experiment with colours and lighting, SFW (safe for work), but the link will jump you over to it on DA.

That's very pretty! It almost has a latino/hispanic feel to it (maybe because of her coloring?) which is unusual for that type of art, but that's what really makes it unique. The lighting adds a perfect glow to the whole picture.

And aren't those tablets great? I love mine.

Wow, we like it very much. :D

And tablets? I so want one for us. Which one do you use, Alia? And you, Lisamonkey? :) We looked at a few by Wacom, the Bamboo ones, but we don't know if 5' by 3' is good or not.

Thank you, guys! :)

Now that you mention the colouring stuff--yeah, I see what you mean. I was going for primary colours the blue and red for the dress and the yellow for the stone and the light it cast, but the way it's does look a lot different from the "traditional" Elf of fantasy art.

And yes, the tablet is awesome! Thank you so much for recommending that one!

Su, Monkey and I use the same tablet--she actually linked me to the kind she had and gave a good recommendation for it, and I completely want to echo it. I got it off of a discount online site, and it's a Genius tablet (and really, it's brilliant! ;) )

From what I hear, Wacom is very, very good--it's pro quality tablets, though bamboo is a bit more of a student tablet. But the bamboo tablets run about $100 dollars in retail stores around here, and they're tinier than this tablet (mine is 8x6), and I got it much cheaper. All tablets come with free software, but I haven't tried the ones on this. I don't want to get used to trail Photoshop CS3, when I have the full CS2, and I'm not sure I want to get used to Corel Painter, since after a month it no longer works (curses on you, you trial products!).
