I'm a big fan of the Civilization series, and have been having loads of fun with the Beyond the Sword expansion for Civ 4, but when I saw this title, I couldn't resist. What's nice about Colonization is that it doesn't require the basic Civ IV to play (which Beyond the Sword does), and it's confined to a much more narrow time. For anyone who like the era of exploration up through to the Colonial and Federal eras, this is a good game for you. Many of the features are the same as with Civ IV--you get to pick a nation (now a group of colonies), and you have the choice of what leader you want to play (each of whom has different personality traits which will affect how you play the game), and many of the units will be familiar, as will be the system of improvements for the land outside of settlements, and transport. But what really made this fun initially was the ability to micromanage and how it was different from Civ IV. Initially it's a game about managing trade, and resources to grow your settlements and found them quickly, as well as playing nice with all of the Native American tribes you meet. The end goal of the game (in order to achieve victory) is to declare your independence from your king, and defeat his forces, before any other colonial forces do. It was neat to see the ship graphics way improved over the Civ IV expansions (it looks like they pulled ship models and graphics from Sid Meier's Pirates--which was phenomenally fun as well). But what really was awesome were the leaders you could pick, and the "founding fathers" you can recruit for your continental congress. My first time trying it, I hadn't decided which side I would play (you play either as English, French, Dutch or Spanish colonists)...until I saw that one of the leaders for the English was John Adams. Win! I had to giggle when the third suggested city to found is Roanoke, when that was really the first English colony, and also a lost one, but all in all, it's a really fun game, and a good break from having to go all the way through a tech tree, like in the other civilizations. Anyone else got massive Civilization love? For any version? |
