And as a reward for even looking at the poll, a funny story regarding operating systems.

An anonymous member of my family works in the computer sciences field (as a programmer), and was discussing with another person the sort of work she did. She mentioned that she doesn't only program for Windows--that she in fact did programming for Unix systems. This puzzled the other person greatly, as they weren't sure what that had to do with computers at all. Asking what she meant, my family member clarified, "Unix? Oh, it's an operating system." To which she was greeted with a horrified expression, and my favorite response ever:

"You operate on eunuchs?!?"

Moral of this story...when mentioning operating systems in front of not so technically savvy individuals, it would be best to clarify immediately that it is "Unix" not "eunuchs."

There we go.

Otherwise...is there any one of those operating systems you'd prefer to have? Or do love what you have, or know nothing else?

Hehe, that's a fun story. :D And I didn't even know it's an operating system. What's it like?

I'd have liked to have Vista, but I got ol' XP. I know Vista's cursed by all tech nerds, but it's still purdy. :D

I've never had a problem with Vista. I still don't understand what all the techies are upset about.

I have a computer with Vista, but I only keep it because it runs my games--ones for which my windows emulator doesn't support yet.

One of the major issues with Vista is the security. I don't know if you've disabled your warnings that it gives for practically everything, Monkey, but for me that's a large source of annoyance. I mean...when it asks you, as your downloading the latest patch from Microsoft, "Are you sure you trust this publisher, Microsoft?" there is an issue. The only way to get it to stop doing that is to disable the user account control settings or...I believe there is one other method, and then once you disable that, you aren't going to get any warnings along that line, even if it is something possibly valid.

For me though, my main reason to have gone through with a switch to Linux, was that it's much more stable, and I've found it to run better and faster. Plus there's this really awesome thing about it being open source, and free. The next computer I get is going to be either one with linux preloaded, or one I make myself, and that will knock at least $200.00 off of the price.

I also have Vista. It's true, the constant warning are annoying, but the way I see it is that they will definitely protect me if something bad happens.

I had XP, which I really liked, but so far I haven't had too many problems with Vista. I'm still nervous, though considering all that's been said about it. The only real problem I can think of right now is that I no longer have the option to always allow scripted windows on Internet Explorer, so everytime I want to post a link here, it freaks out and I have to temporarily allow scripted windows. But maybe that's not Vista, maybe it's the version of IE I have.

Overall, it's not bad. And yes, Su, it's very pretty! :)

It's partly both. Vista comes with a base version of IE, that should be the most up to date (as of the packaging of Vista), but I think that it's something to do with the version of IE.

I've just memorized the codes and type them out now, if I want to post anything, I use them so much everywhere. I really do spend too much time online.

I built my shiny new computer back in September and so I now run on Vista. I haven't had any problems so far, the security prompts nag a little but generally it's pretty sound. I definitely like some of the features on it. For those thinking about it, I would recommend building your own, it's cheaper and you can go with whichever specs you want. Mine's pretty much a top of the line gaming PC, perfectly capable of playing Crysis on high without any problems and from scratch including an 20" LCD monitor and OEM Vista it cost around £800.

I also use Firefox rather than IE.

I remember when I first got Vista *tries to think* maybe a year and a half ago, that I was annoyed by the security warnings. But it seems like I did something (can't remember what) to make them come up less often. I don't know if it was the download warning, though. I think it had more to do with the "Are you sure?" warning for virtually everything else I wanted to do. But as I said, I don't have that anymore.

Having to jump through hoops to run scripts is a little annoying, I have to admit that. I'm used to it now, and like Alia, I just type my own more often than not. But I do wish there was some sort of option to make it permanently allow scripts. (I've looked for one, believe me)

Oh, am I the only one who misses the old school defragmenter where you could watch all the little blocks scrunch into place? That thing could keep me mesmerized for hours. :P They need to bring that back.
