I have been wondering. How come at the beginning of CotBP Elizabeth, on the Black Pearl, almost drops the coin and catches it at the last minute, all the pirates are scared and like, flinch? Wouldn't they just hop in the water and pick it back up? When they board the Dauntless (I think) later and they are underwater they look absolutely ok.

Well, I always thought that part of the movie and also when Elizabeth dumps the hot coals on Ragetti and he yells about it burning him....were used to trick the audience into thinking that the crew of the Pearl were normal and not cursed. I understand why they did it but I think it was cheating a bit because neither one of those scenes makes a lot of sense after you've seen the whole movie. |

I'm with Xena. But, perhaps an alternate explanation for it (though with plenty of holes in it), regards that one quote they made about Bootstrap Bill and the crushing (something? what goes here? *is a horrible PotC fan*) oblivion? or DJL. I know I had talked with a person who used this as justification for why Bootstrap couldn't come back--trapped and also at a depth that, while it couldn't kill him, he was probably stuck down there. Maybe something similar here (this is where the holes appears especially since they were in port and the pressure of the depth shouldn't be too much for them). Or, perhaps they really didn't want to go down to get the gold--a lot of work. Lame explanations, I know, but that's the best I can come up with. |

*tries to imagine looking for a single gold coin in the dark, rocky, sandy depths of the ocean and hoping some fish doesn't come by and eat it before I find it* Nope, I wouldn't want to go after it either. It would be easier to pounce on her before she drops it. And the hot coals, I always thought that was just a natural reaction. Haven't you ever touched something that you thought was hot and jumped back and screamed (or whatever you do) before it actually burned you? It might have been something like that. I think he just panicked. |

I always thought the reaction from Ragetti was because he's a bit stupid, and forgot he wouldn't feel it, although when thinking about it, they haven't been cursed for so long, and I'm not sure they'd have gone through fires during that time, so it's not like he'd have time to get used to fire not hurting, plus those pirates only wear one set of clothes, I guess that means they smell, but he wouldn't want his clothes burning with no other ones to wear, a lot of explainations there, so maybe that helps. ![]() Also, about the dropping the coin into the water, which is where the topic started, it is night when this happens, and in the 1600's or whenever the film is set, the underwater diving light hasn't been invented, and no matter how many times it happens on Spongebob, there's no way their candles would stay alight underwater, there wasn't that crazy water penetrating moonlight out at the time, the water was dark, and if they waited for it to become light the coin might have moved from where it was dropped by the tide, or become buried or something, there's a whole lot of factors there, plus they had just attacked a town, and had to get away from the area before the Navy came and blew up their ship, so it's not like waiting for it to become light outside was even an option, yep, that makes sense.
