This'll warm Degree's black heart.

I've been saying for quite sometime now that we are slowly but surely returning to Victorian work hours. Workers today are routinely expected to work longer, for less money and with fewer colleagues to share the work-load. They are also expected to travel ever further afield to seek or retain employment. I'll give some examples. On Saturday when taking the dog out I saw a window cleaner cleaning windows and a group of men digging up a carpark. In addition we've had workers digging up the pavement and grass to install gas pipes. They start work at 08.30 and finish at 6.30pm. My B-i-L has a 50+ round trip commute each day. He's a skilled worker but he can't get anything at all closer to home.

In contrast my father didn't leave the house until 08:50am and he was often home by 5.15pm. Of course from time to time, about every 8 weeks , my father did have to travel far afield and stay overnight for business. In those days my father's salary alone was enough to support a wife, three children, a dog and a mortgage. Today my B-i-L and sister both have to work full-time just to keep their heads above water.

I call this 'Neo-Victorianism.'

Look out for terrible mass poverty and workhouses. However, once the people realise that chronic, long-term unemployment will be not only their lot but their children's, grandchildren's, great-grandchildren's, great, great grandchildren's, great great great grandchildren's etc They'll be heads on poles! The revolution that follows will be far worse than the Russian and French revolutions combined.

Oh those poor, poor things. Having to put in a full day's work. Boo hoo! You can blame government taxation and meddling with free markets for eroding the value of their wages.
