One Among the Fence

California is a Western State. Ohio is in the mid-West. Western countries refers to "The West" (USA, North America and Western Europe) as opposed to Russia, China, India and their satellites or minor "Eastern" countries (Lithuania, Romania, etc.). Now, is Turkey part of "The West? Years ago, I would have said maybe, but now that the towel heads are amok there, I would say no, because "The West" also encompasses a set of humanitarian values not shared by barbarous regions where life is cheap. Also, is South America part of the West? Maybe as to some countries yes, but as to other countries, no? Edited by Degree, Aug 28 2014, 01:42 PM.

When LB said westerner as opposed to Mid-East, I did not know if she was referring to people in America only or people worldwide. I did not know Ohio was considered Mid-West. I only guessed that Ohio was Mid-East because of its position in the map. Anyway, a lot of time ago, I heard Chigago was said to be in the "Old West" which was something I did not understand when I heard of. I assume it was called this way because there was a time the USA's territory ended at the Mississip River. So Chicago was the West back in the day (year 1800). Then I believe that is the reason Ohio is still considered Mid-West to this day. |

As for the meaning of the word West as the Western World: South America is not West, although South Americans will consider their countries so. Not because South Americans want to be West, but because of a lack of a better classification. Wether South America is West or not, it's more like a contextual classification. If a South American is talking to a Chinese, he will refer to South Amrica as "The West", but if he is talking to an American, he will not do so. Anyway, I think Chile and Uruguay could pass as Western countries. I think the Western World is strictly Western Europe plus Israel, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. I agree Turkey cannot be considered West, since not even some Europeans consider themselves Westerners. At least the Hungarians I met in real life always referred as "The West" countries other than Hungary. South Africa ceased being West in 1994. Edited by Finis Hominis, Aug 29 2014, 12:43 AM.
