Open the whole forum up to guests??

At the moment they can't view the "Spreading the Love" and "HULK SMASH!" forums.

I'm thinking it'll be better for guests (172) if I open everything up. The only reason I had those forums member only was because I thought it added an element of privacy. And also it might entice people to register.

This always happens. It happened with my forum too. I think all slammy gang admins have struggled with this issue at some point.

You make a forum and originally want it to be a free, open place for all members to access. Then after awhile you start to want people to register, and realise that making the forum private is a way of getting them to sign up.

It comes down to whether you want clean cut, legit members who have to log in to access the forums, or leave it a free space for guests to access.

The downside to having guests is you get weird anon posts that creep people out, and often guests will just lurk and read without posting. But you're maintaining that free speech, open to all kinda thing that the original ihm/ihw sites had.

On the other hand, making people log in to access the forums ensures an active forum, where everyone knows who's posting what and logs in regularly to keep up to date. The downside to forced membership is that it makes the admin look like an anal retentive control freak.

No offence to any past, present and future admins who have a closed forum; I myself cut my forum off to the public and wouldn't even let 172 join - I rejected his registration.

I'm so sorry for that 172. I was pissed off at all men at the time.

IHH was by far the best and most successful spin off forum. Why did it close down? Effervescent Elephant (I hope I've spelled that right) And GFF both had/have a peaceful, pleasant atmosphere. Each admin has their own flavour when it comes to running a forum. You have to not be offended when forum activity dwindles (Mark) and threatening members if they don't post more is a no no.

In saying that, Mark's method of running CB obviously works for him and the members. It's the exact opposite of the original forums in that it's so tightly controlled, but some members really want that and must find it comforting, like they're being looked after. The little piggies are kept safe from the big bad wolf *puffs up chest* :wutevs: . Speaking of Monty  , he's showing incredible self control by not posting here when he has the link.

He has changed over the years. He still has his spamtastic outbursts, but he's more focused on his life outside the Internet. Less... Agro? I don't know if any of you are staying In contact with him since he was banned from cb but his emails nowdays are not as crazy and rambling. He's maturing a bit, calming down.

Don't mind all the misplaced capital letters, the autocorrect on this thing is bung. It keeps changing slammy gang to spammy gang.

Haha thanks for that, Jane. It is a dilema alright. Think I'm gonna open the ol' gal up. Consequences be damned!

I miss IHH. And all the folks that used to post there.

I wrote a reply but it either got lost in th ether or I posted it in another thread by mistake. Blu what do you want your forum to be? The best forums reflect the personality of the admin' while making the members visits as happy and comfortable as possible.
In my expereince guests rarely become members, some guests are just passing through, while other guests like the anonymity.

I think I just want it to be as open as possible.

I agree with you about the guest thing though, LB. And seeing as I've only advertised at CB, it's likely everyone who was going to register has registered by now.
