First of all: This is not Random Thoughts. This is for legitimate things you wish to have an actual discussion about, but doesn't count as something that needs a thread. It also is for serious thoughts that we could discuss, whether it is about life or society. The main reasoning for this is so we can have in-depth discussions about all sorts of things. I will not say "No Arguing" because the definition of argument is "TO find one's own version of the truth". That's what we are here for. To start things off, here's a doozie. General Education classes. Are they really needed? Honestly, I hate GE. It's so silly. People should be able to study what they want. At the very least, you should have the option to skip it. But how would that option work, anyway? |

I think that GE is kind of important, but not anywhere near as important as it seems to be. It's restricting to some students, and my school only allows one elective for the first two years. You can't really decide on what you want to do like that. This may be just me, but I need to explore. That said, GE is pretty helpful in that it gives you the basis of everything. It has some great merits. Everything builds on everything else; but that's also a flaw. For example, say someone is a gifted linguist; they excel. So, they're in honors English and a second language. But, they don't understand numbers. So, they do poorly in sciences and mathematics. Their learning of languages will be somewhat (not very, but somewhat) hampered by their mathematical troubles. Last thought on GE, for now. This world is getting more and more detailed. That means people specialize in more and more distinctive fields. Take osteopathic surgeons, for example. They focus solely on surgery of the bones and cartilage. So, if they lose their job, or if it becomes useless, they're royally screwed. GE will at least give a bit of backup knowledge so they can pick a new field, instead of having nothing to go on and nothing to do. |

Fair point. But do you think that GE classes should have a reduced credit rate to make 'em cheaper? Also: I was referring to university GE, in case i was as unclear as I think I was.

Sports discussion. Actually, a huge issue. Joe Paterno and Jerry Sandusky. I hated Sandusky because his defensive coaching was crap. Now, I get MORE reason not to like him. He's a rapist. But...why'd Paterno, who had been working for Penn State for 60 years, get fired? He told the cops in '98, and the school later on. The NCAA fired him for not telling the NCAA. A sports organization. Which deals with sports. And rape isn't a sport. Huh? Moreover, and my point is here, there are WAY too many misconceptions about this case, to the point where most believe that Paterno is the rapist himself. So... My question is this. Is this the media's fault, or our own for not really looking? It eventually cost the man his job. Two months later, Paterno was dead. I think the media is so biased, there was no way in HELL that anyone could have gotten a fair view. |
