When dragonrot first reared it's ugly head, no one could have guessed the amount of damage it would cause. It was characterized, in it's early stages, by a dull hide with dark patches much like a rash. The dragonhealers shrugged it off as a minor affliction, treating it as they would other hide conditions with washing and lotions, never even seeming to consider that it would be anything more.
What quickly became clear was that the condition was infectious. Numerous dragons contracted the disease quickly, and those that had first shown the symptoms started to deteriorate. Open sores, and a loss of mental stability soon became signs that a dragon would not make it. Those that managed to retain enough of their processes would jump between, but some lingered on, there bodies slowly rotting away until their systems could no longer cope.
Quarantine seemed to do little to stop the spread of the disease, which quickly spread through the weyrs. Some dragons, and their riders, fled the weyrs and took up residence in the wilds. Rogue riders, they survived by stealing from the holds, and soon a distrust built between weyr and holds.
Fifteen turns later and dragons are extinct, except for a single clutch. Golden Kaliath jumped between after clutching, leaving her rider and the shells on the sands and a single message - to look after them, and rebuild the population. Dragonless have come to Ista Weyr, where the clutch was laid, with the intention of helping to instruct the new weyrlings and they must cling to the hope that they will survive.
