As a weyrling, your main priority is keeping your dragonet fit and healthy while learning about the things you will need once your graduate. It is a hard time, with young dragonets being needy, and as a result all other duties are suspended. It is possible for weyrlings to be noticed by wingleaders and to spend time with a wing during this time, although it is rare for such to occur. Some of the subjects you may cover can be found below.
Exercises 1. Break into sub-wings and practice as subwings? 2. break into groups based on who is LIKELY to go into what wing (* wings determined upon graduation based on skill proved through weyrlinghood, so these may not be final groups-- but what's likely, given dragonet build and rider personality?) 3. Dragons leading blindfolded humans, either their own or their riders. (Speaking to other humans not required, so as to not step on individual canons, but allowed). 4. Identify health ailments in dragons that are not their own 5. Firestone flaming target practice 6. Flamethrower use and target practice 7. Blindfolded flying: when 'lings can fly. Blindfold dragon and have the riders give htem directions and eventually land, to simulate blind threadfall. 8. Blow the leaves away- pre-flying. Since we're subtropical, use pulled leaves or sand. Pile sand or leaves, and have dragonets flap their wings to blow them down. 9. Weather flight training- various points through flight training. Pick a weather condition and have them fly in it, also varying heights and temperatures. 10. practice Flight training 2: Cooperative flying: midair rescues. Weyrlings learn what to do when another weyrling pair is injured, and how to help them when they are flying. Includes: Supporting an injured dragon, how to approach a dragon/rider who is mad with pain. 11. Basic fighting techniques: hand to hand 12. Basic fighting: Bladed weapons- practice with wooden swords and knives. 13. Basic fighting: disarming and self defense without fighting. 14: hunting lessons: when they're big enough, bring down successively larger animals. Only when the risk of getting a kick from a herdbeast poses little threat. Various portions- try with wherries, herdbeasts, bovines, porcines, etc. 15. Candidate mentoring- light. One day lesson, show candidates how to take care of a dragonet. may be voluntary or not. 16. Candidate mentoring- longterm. voluntary. Candidates assigned to a weyrling pair for aweek and basically shadow them, and help with chores. 17. Betweening short distances: short hops between. 18. Weyrling Camping Trip- 1 night to 1 week. Teach survival techniques in the wild. possibly multiple trips. 19. Mock threadfall w/ ropes: ground 20. Mock threadfall w/ ropes: midair. 21. Fancy Flying tips: aerial loops, dives, etc. 22. Midair rescues: falling rider use dummies 23. Basic fighting: ranged weapons: bows and spears. 24. Basic fighting: ranged weapons on dragonback, with those who are skilled enough with a bow to not spear their dragons in the wing... 25. Flight endurance training: stay aloft for long periods of time, when old enough to fly. 26. Firestone sorting by quality- low, high, and mid. 27. Massages for sore growing muscles, and how to give your bond massages. 28. Going between on another rider's dragon, to foster comfort going between. 29. First glide 30. First flight 31. Wing strengthening exercises 32. First wing/wing assignments, junior weyrling wing. Possibly have them rotate positions, or form mini-wings initially. 33. moving in formation/waling ground drills. 34. Between preperation: composing mental pictures and visual coordinates. 35. between preperation: holding mental images for long periods of time. 36. first betweening. 37. Weyrling mentoring with dragonriders- assign adult rider to candidates for a day or for long term, have weyrlings shadow riders and/or ridre shadow weyrling, answer questions, and give tips.
Games 1. Pass the water filled bag 1: weyrling riders toss bag of water to one another, learn to predict movements. 2. Pass the water-filled bag 2: same as above, but with firestone-filled bag 3. Pass the water filled bag 2.5: Same as above, water and then firestone, for ground-mounted wing drills. 4. Pass the water filled bag 3: same as above, but aerial, while mounted, when the 'lings can fly. 5. Pass the water-filled bag 5: same as above, with firestone 6. Dragon-tag, while riders throw things. self expanitory. No biting, no cheating, no scratching. 7. Protect the teamleader: weyrlings and/or dragonets defend team leader against being hit with water balloons. can be ground or air. Teams chosen at random, team leader random or rotates. Can be group against group, AWLM against group. 8. Dragon racing: once old enough to fly. Three timed laps around the weyrbowl, in air, with rider. Whoever's fastest gets some sort of IC reward, possibly day off. 9. Dragon racing, ground. Same as above. but on the ground, for younger dragonets. 10. The great rider hunt: when dragons are old enough, riders hunt herdbeasts instead of their dragons fo rthe first time, while the dragons watch. Weapons allowed. Also allowed to use hands/teeth, for comedic effect-- though perhaps with sedated animals, so no one gets injured. 11. Firestone target practice, for accuracy. 12. Reflex practice: toss soft balls at weyrlings and weyrling riders. 13. Hide n' seek between dragonet and rider. Dragonet hides, rider tries to find them. dragon does not give hints. Alternatively, dragon gives only images to show where they are, for brief hints. for former, dragons may move around?
Lecture Topics 1. Flights and you: Girls. How to know when a female dragon is going to rise, what to expect, how to prepare. For boys- etiquette, pre and post flight. A suggestion for running lessons
Lectures tend to peter out after a few posts, admin posts at that. Solution: finish talking early. and also possibly have something planned as a backup. LEctures aren't really great for interaction, because you're not supposed to talk during a lecture. Post the lecture in the first or second post, or at MOST third post, and then open the rest of the thread up for socialization. Don't wait for everyone to arrive to post after your first post, especially if you've only had the candidates/weyrlings called in your first post. If you wait for everyone, you'll never get another response. Wait until you have a few replies, or wait two days, and then post again.
