It was a quiet afternoon, the sun filtered through the blinds and tickled the students who still had classes or were just hanging around on campus after a long day of work. On the bottom floor of Ravencroft High, in a lone corridor away from the center of hustle, a shadow fell on the door with the roman numeral for "22". Small, pale fingers traced the outline of the unusual doorsign almost fondly. Then, they halted, curled into a small fist and fell to the girls side. Lian remembered putting this up as a replacement for the worndown sign that used to be on the door to the Occult Club. Tentatively she put the big silver key into the hole and opened it, with a hesitation that would seem strange to the onlooker. Inside was, as she had feared, nothing... Her heart became heavy when she stepped inside and small dust clouds rose from the ground. In front of her inner eye the very first day of the club passed by, cleaning and working to make this room their little fortress. Sure, it was in much better shape than back then even now, but her long absence had left its traces. Quietly she blew away some of the dust on the table and set down her things. Her steps sounded hollow and lonely, lifting the blinds only made her squint her eyes at the brightness. When she turned around, her eyes were drawn to the seat where Ai had usually sat. Why? Why did she vanish without a word? A bitter expression crossed Lians face and she shook her head. It was just so unfair! There had been a girl on the same wavelength as her, a companion, a friend, her first real friend and then... Then she stopped coming to school one day. Eventually their teacher had announced that Ai Shiro had moved, but Lian couldn´t believe that. Not after the fun times they had spent in this room together, even if it was just a few weeks. Ever since then, Lian had avoided the club, not even talking to its other member, Alicia. Alicia was still there, but very busy lately. And as much as it hurt her to say it, Ai had been somehow special. And now, now that Lian had experienced so many strange, mysterious and dark things, now when she would have needed Ai´s counsel more than ever - no, it was not even that really. She just missed her. Softly, she walked over to the cupboard and reached for the strawdoll Ai had placed there, for their luck and safety. Had something happened to her? It was the only explanation Lian had, unless she assumed the other girl had had enough of her out of nowhere. And she didn´t even dare think about that. The Wara Ningyo in hand, Lian sat down on the chair and stared at it, sadness and confusion in her heart. But there was something she had wanted to do. Something that had been bothering her ever since Ai´s disappearance, in combination with her awakening and the hospital incident... With a deep breath, the girl unpacked her bag, careful not to tip over the doll, and put several strange looking objects on the table, starting with a deep crimson silk cloth. She took out a violet candle, the color of divination, and lightened it with a match. There was a small japanese character carved into the candle. It read "Ai". |
