Veronica didn't really understand it. Ever since she moved here, she had been surrounded by beauty. The land itself most of all, but even the people were more vibrant and lively than they'd ever been back home. The winters were kind, and the summer weather lasted longer than a month at most, and she had found no end of opportunities to capture the environments and imagery with her camera. The camera itself was a gift from her father, when they moved out of Russia her next birthday came just as the family settled into their new jobs. She had wasted no time in snapping pictures of all the wonders of nature and civilization that caught her eye. Which compared to her old home, was a utopia to her. For the first time in her life... things were looking up. Which made her all the more confused when she found her vision shrouded. A song played in the distant... like some kind of demented carnival music, but she was unable to see further than the had in front of her face. She had the sensation of standing on something solid, but she couldn't see that either. Afraid to make a move, she called out in her native tongue. No answer... But then flames shot up a short ways away from her, illuminating the scene... of destruction. It was similar to where she lived now, but fire engulfed nearly everything. She heard screams, but saw no one. All the while that damned tune played above her somewhere. At a loss of what to do, she paused. Shaking her head, she tried to snap out of it. Maybe someone needed help? She couldn't just stand there. Taking one step forward, however, proved to be a mistake. The ground beneath her opened up into a pit, filled with flames and what seemed to be the source of that infernal music. As she fell forward she felt a scream catch in her throat. And then she awoke. Sitting up with a jolt, the camera that was on her stomach is sent clattering to the ground beside the bench she laid on. She was actually in the garden, the afternoon after classes were done. The redheaded student rubs her eyes. She must have fallen asleep while enjoying the relative peacefulness of the gardens. Doing her best to shake the nightmare from her mind, she unsteadily gets up from the bench with a stretch to find where her camera tumbled towards. Once her eyes stopped being all misty, that is. |

Asahina had made a point to stroll through the school grounds at some point. Ravencroft was one of those top schools that they hail as one of the best in the country or some nonsense. It was all garbage to her, education is education it doesn't matter how much you pay the person the material should all be the same, algebra is still algebra even if you teach it in a posh accent. She snorted under her breath at the thought. One thing though that she could appreciate was the rather well constructed buildings and the beautiful layout and designs. She had made her way through the courtyard and into the gardens by this point, having walked for a while she chose to stop and use a nearby vending machine. A bottle of water would do her well, she was rather unfit after all and she grew tired easily. After spending a moment agonizing over the over-inflated prices of the machine for a bottle of water she reluctantly produced the money and withdrew her drink once it had dropped into the retrieval area. As she bust open the bottle and took a drink, grumbling in her head all the while, she was rather shocked by the load clatter of something hitting the ground. Something plastic most likely, it sounded almost like a remote control for a television or the like. Spinning to check the source of the noise she spotted a girl sitting up from a bench, she hadn't noticed her in the search for the vending machine. After all, benches generally don't play host to vending machines... she nervously screwed the cap back on the lid of her drink. While she did so she managed to spot the thing that grabbed her attention in the first place, the source of the sound. A camera, a rather nice one too, had apparently fallen to the ground and made an attempt at escaping it's owner. Asahina looked at the girl, then back to the camera. She realized that the girl seemed to be searching for something, with her stellar logic and detective skills Asahina put two and two together. "Is... is that yours there? Is that what you're looking for?" She pointed out the camera's location to the girl, hesitantly. She grinned in a sheepish manner, unsure why she even spoke up. She should have just left the girl to her own devices and left to continue the research on the school, but she was here now and she'd spoken up like a fool. What a pain in the ass. She began to walk towards the camera, to retrieve it, in case the girl hadn't spotted it. Only a second later she had picked up the camera delicately and held it up to show to the girl, "This here?" She held it out to her, even it it was hers or not Asahina didn't want it, this girl could take it and do whatever she wanted with it. |

"Oof..." Veronica gave herself one last rub of her eyes and shook her head to shake off the drowsiness and shocked nerves from the dream and looked towards the speaker. She hadn't seen the girl before, but part of her wanted to reach out and hug her instinctively. Simply for the fact she didn't look like a happy person at all. But, she restrained her instinct, as she didn't want to insult the girl who was being kind enough to retrieve her camera. "Ah! Yes, yes. Is it. Thank you dear. Sorry to bother." Her Russian accent was obvious, as was her shaky grasp of English grammar. Her tone and smile showed she was appreciative of the gesture. She gently took the camera back, and quickly inspected it to make sure it wasn't damaged from the tumble. Thankfully it was well made, and there wasn't a scratch on it. Quality in the device's make, for certain. "Very kind to get that for me. Veronica." She states her name and inclines her head with a smile. "Cloudy day won't put frown on face now, thanks to you, pretty bird. You are?" It was hard to tell what her intentions were with the nicknames she was giving, due to her odd usage of them. Nonetheless, she seemed genuinely grateful to the young girl. |

"Very uncomfortable," was her first thought, though she did her best not to verbally say it. She quickly bowed her head and directed her eyes away for a moment, still not sure why everyone she'd been running into lately was so polite it was unusual. Growing up in New York made her certain that everyone was rotten to some degree. Whatever the case she was now faced with yet another bout of conversational tests. She reluctantly offered her name, "Asahina, I'm Asahina. Glad to help..." she trailed her sentence off, looking around her surroundings again. She looked back to the girl, she was pretty, she had a really thick accent too, Russian or something like it. Better not to ask, people get offended by that kind of thing easily. Making her upset would not be priority one on the list of tasks for the day. She gave a half cocked smile, and looked away again. The garden was nice, this girl, Veronica or whatever, she picked a nice place to take a nap. Though why outside? Sleeping outside seemed dangerous, like something a hobo would do. Does Russia have hobos? She threw the thought out of her head, certainly it wasn't unheard of. Either way she looked back to the girl once again, she didn't like staring, it made her uneasy and she wasn't exactly good at conversation. She was glad the girl was happy and all that, but the longer this awkward silence went on the worse Asahina began to think and it was leading her to believe that soon this Veronica girl would be thinking rather negatively of her. She pointed at the camera, "So it's not damaged?" She coughed out the line in a blunt and plain manner, she wanted to slap her own forehead at the cliche manner this conversation had gone. |

"Aaa... Asahina? Yes. Got it. I think. Sorry. Still getting used to other languages and names" Veronica smiles and looks to her camera at the question. "No. Is good. Very fine make. Thought of quality when was gifted this." She holds the camera to let her see, even though she probably didn't care. Vi didn't know that. Bringing the camera back she takes a quick look at her watch to see how long she was asleep. Not for long. Good. Her eyes go to the drink the girl just purchased. "Cloudy today, but not too bad out. Walk while you drink that? Enjoy gardens. Don't have to stare." She seemed to pick up on the girl's discomfort through her body language. Though she didn't have English mastered, it didn't seem like she was foolish. "Come, Walk with me. Can enjoy before rain, yes? Have some time." She beckoned her with one hand, her camera held in the other. It seemed she at least intended to take some pictures of the beautiful gardens. At the very least, the walk meant she didn't need to talk constantly or make eye contact. Perhaps that was considered in Veronica's offer? |

She had intended to walk through the school grounds anyway, so... why not? She gave a relieved sigh and began to follow the Veronica. Seemed to be a theme lately it did, following the natives of the area around. She took a quick drink of her water as she caught up and walked beside the girl. "You like to take photos?" It struck her, thinking about the value of such a thing, she had never thought of using photography to document her work. She wondered how someone who had interest in such a thing would do it. She bottled up the water again and walked along, observing the gardens with her new acquaintance. It's interesting that she managed to find such a person out of all the people to run into. However, she didn't mind so much now... though she was still uncomfortable. Having some nervous feelings she continued to watch the buildings, the vegetation, and such else. Sighing she looked back to the girl with her, wondering why photography. Was there something more to it, perhaps not but she was curious. She waited however, to see what the girl had in mind for a response to her previous question. The scenario was not exactly what she imagined when she came to the school grounds, but she was here now. What else could happen... Edited by Tatl Tael, Jun 20 2014, 09:13 AM.

Veronica smiled at her question, and was about to respond when she suddenly saw a photo opportunity. She knelt low to the ground, which looked strange, likely. And snapped a picture. After which she stood up and offered to show it to her companion. She had managed to get a wonderful angle of the peach tree, various colored flower in the front, to the backdrop of a break in the clouds in the distance. How she managed to know to take that angle to get it was a bit of a mystery, but the picture was pleasant nonetheless. "Yes! Land is beautiful here. City looks nice. Nature looks nice. Not like old home, country was wasteland almost, ravage by winters that claimed lives every year. Want to remember here if I ever leave. Share with friends, let them see beauty." Her tone was excited, but not overbearing. She seemed genuinely passionate about capturing the prosperity of the area, both urban and natural. "Want to visit other places in pictures. Someday. But memories good to tie to images." She continues walking once Asahina got a good look at the photo she took. "What about you? Do you do ah... hobby?" She glances at the slightly older, but younger looking, woman. "You look like reader, if assuming is ok?" |

"Reading? I suppose I do. Not as often as I used to." Her thoughts bubbled about the topic, lots of books came to mind but nothing stuck in her head. She could remember enjoying them but not necessarily what they were about. It'd be a while, it seemed. College probably was to blame for that. She looked over the photo that was shown to her, it was quite appealing, extremely vibrant and eye-catching. This is the kind of thing that Hina loved about her job, the aesthetic appeal of the work she did, she wanted people to find it worthy of observing and considering. It was a really hard thing to do, carrying on this walk with the girl she'd only met a few moment ago, but she was starting to get used to it. It wasn't all that bad really, reminded her of some of the more peaceful times in her life. She continued her sentence, "I sketch architecture, I work for a construction company as an intern." She pulled a small notepad from a pocket and produced it for show, it had the OCHRE official seal on it. She flipped a couple pages that contained mostly notes until she got to a small hand-sized rough sketch of a hospital building. Flipping the page there was another building and then another on the next page. She had drawn up small ideas for the hospital out of interest in the work, but it wasn't anything official. "I'm just an intern though, I graduated recently." She wasn't sure what compelled her to share all this info, possibly the fact Veronica had a similar taste in the world's aesthetic appeal? It was a strange feeling saying such things out loud to someone she'd never met before and wasn't conducting the interview for a job. She mulled the thoughts over in her head, maybe it was just her imagination but she, for a moment, felt like she had managed to break out of her shell. However, this quickly came crashing down when it occurred to her that Veronica might not think the drawings were any good. She hastily closed the book and put it back in her pocket, afraid that she might have disgusted her new companion. She grinned uneasily with a nervous twitch in her cheeks. She felt awkward again, being in this situation this long was hard on her but at the same time she was forcing herself to endure... something about it felt liberating. She looked back to the camera, "Do... you have a lot of pictures stored?" She hoped she wasn't making an ass of herself, she didn't even know if the camera held a large number of photos or not or what. Cameras weren't exactly her forte. |

Veronica looked over with interest. Her eyes didn't register much at first, but the image of the hospital caught her attention. "Oh! So you design building? I hear much math goes into it... or is that engineer?" She paused, confusing herself a little. She shakes it off before long though. "Pretty detailed for intern. Layout look like it make sense. How come I don't see it in buildings?" There was something rather... straightforward about her way of thinking. She didn't really understand the whole contracting business in the world of construction. To her, if it made sense, why not do it? "Wish I could draw. Barely draw straight line. Hands feel better on camera than pencil." To the second question she smiles again. A cheerful expression seemed to come easily to this woman. "Yes, Digital, Holds many. Save to little sticks for computer." She likely meant flash drives. That said, her description made it seem like she wasn't very technologically savvy... which would make sense considering her upbringing. "Could show more, if you like. I have good pictures of school and around. Want to go downtown and also city limits for more. Lake hopefully. Running water is calming. Capture in picture I hope?" Veronica wasn't entirely sure herself why she was so openly sharing her hopes, but she didn't really see the harm in sharing with the girl. "You should come with sometime. Eat something then walk. Find inspiration. Discuss pictures and old architecture?" |

The idea sounded pleasant, in fact it sounded helpful as well. Going with the girl and seeing the city would really help Hina learn the town and would let her get a good idea of the surrounding architecture of the city. She thought about it a bit before nodding to Veronica. "That sounds like a good idea. I'd love to see the rest of your photos." Letting the girl take pictures of the city that she could later review and observe really made sense, it'd let her compare her work to the images of the city buildings. With that in mind she took another drink from her now almost empty water bottle. Once it was plugged back up she revisited the question Veronica had posed earlier. "I suppose there is a bit of math involved, we need to keep our designs both aesthetically appealing and structurally sound. The math bit helps keep the buildings from collapsing during natural disasters or under their own weight." It wasn't exactly a perfect description of the job but it was fairly accurate. She looked around again at the location they were passing through in such a peaceful manner. Someone had put a lot of work into getting this place built from the ground up and their job was not easy, but they managed to make such a large school so beautiful. Hina only hoped she could do the same some day. "Your compliment is kind by the way, but yes, I'm only an intern, so it's unlikely my designs will even be used." She finished the bottle of water, disposing of the plastic in a nearby recycling bin. She stopped for a moment. She'd almost forgotten she was talking to another person. Her anxiety ate away at her, what if this was all just a fluke, would she really be able to pull this off again if they met up somewhere else, like that lake? She tried to shake the thought turning back to Veronica hoping she didn't look too uncomfortable. |

"Would have to get computer sticks to show all, but they have room to use computers, yes?" Her suggestion, in other words, was to use the computer lab later. Just how many pictures she had already was the question.... and how many of the interior did the faculty know about? Was it really allowed? She didn't seem to operate under the assumption that what she was doing would upset anyone. "Ah... of course. Buildings should look nice, but not fall on head... wish math was there to help back home. Only broken roof and cold winds to teach how to build." The idea that they had to patchwork their own home without central heating each winter was not a pleasant one. "Still, do not think how fancy pillar look mean how much roof it hold. Should take your designs. Not ah... 'just saying so'? Would feel classy to be in building you draw." Perhaps having to parse what she just said worked to Asahina's advantage, something to distract her nervousness? "Ah. You are welcome, do not say that though. Maybe not get credit right away, but good ideas, good ideas. Show them to right people, get them made, yes?" Sadly, networking was part of just about anything, something even Veronica had a rudimentary understanding of. "No one success in instant. You will be bigger than intern someday. You will have interns, then they worry about designs being used, yes?" |

The way this girl thought was rather unusual, she was so bright and cheery. It made Asahina wonder if there was some ulterior motive here. Though she felt bad for even thinking such a thing, the girl hadn't done anything to warrant such a doubt, but it was there none the less. She thought for a moment, considering the offer made to her to visit the computer lab, she wasn't sure if the school's interior was public or not. This was a private academy wasn't it? She wasn't sure, but she could always visit the offices and find out. It might not be such a good idea for her to try and just visit unannounced. "I'm not a student here, actually. I don't think I'd be allowed in the computer labs." She felt annoyed at herself for having to bring up such a thing. It seemed like a trivial matter but either way it was probably the truth. After a second she continued, "Maybe another time?" Hopefully there would be a chance for her to see this girl's photography skills, she had already impressed Hina once so it would be a treat to see more. She made her way back to the girl's side so they continue their walk. "You're right, Rome wasn't built in a day, or something like that... one day I'll be able to show off a building I designed. Hopefully..." She was mixed with pride and anxiety again, the idea of being in charge of a construction project seemed overwhelming but it was her job now. She was just worried of how well she could handle it. "If you don't mind me asking... where are you from? You said 'back home,' and your accent is rather thick." |

"Oh? Well.. Surely there is.. what is it called? Internet restaurant?" She likely meant internet Cafe, but even that she wasn't sure was around. She was feeling a bit confused... until she looks at her. "Do you have tech phone? Some accept computer stick. Otherwise... I don't know. Could use my computer, I suppose." She didn't seem too keen on that idea. Apparently even she had limits to privacy, and inviting a stranger into the home seemed to be that limit. Which was reasonable, of course. "Yes, of course, when we go take more pictures, we can see." She nods in quick agreement. She would have to find the flash drives, of course. "It will be beautiful building, dear. Hundreds years later, they will name style after you, like old gothic architecture. They call it Hina architecture, teach it in history class some day!" She was grinning and quite obviously being silly. But her encouragement was genuine. She was certainly having fun talking to the girl. "Ah. I did not say? Apologies. From Russia, northern border. Not many live there because cold, but parents wanted to be left alone. Sister and I screwed plans of that though, Ha!" She chuckles. It sounded something like an in-joke in her family. "Was very cold. And not nice place to live. Very happy to be here. Nicer weather. Much warmer. Can wear shirts that draw boys eyes instead of so many furs bears think I their lost cub." |

Hina couldn't help but chuckle slightly at the thought of the bears, but she quickly shook it out of her system and was back to her usual morose self. She nodded to the girl, Veronica was quite the pleasant one, and it was definitely showing. She thought about the idea, an internet cafe would definitely be an option, but being new in town she didn't know the layout of the city at all. She took out her phone, it was a slightly older model, but it was still a smartphone. She checked, she didn't see any place to put a memory stick. She frowned, this was turning out rather poorly. She shrugged, "I'm not really sure where there might be any internet cafe's, I just moved here myself and I'm not sure where anything is, really." She wasn't sure what else to say on the topic, she wasn't much help it seemed. Having that thought flood her mind, she realized she hadn't remarked on the girl's origins. "I thought it might have been Russia, but I didn't know for sure, I didn't want to say anything and offend you." She was always worried about what others thought, making someone upset was the last thing she ever wanted to do. In fact it was possibly the worst thing she could do. She accessed her phone, trying to pull up directions to something nearby that could be considered an internet cafe. But she wasn't sure what to search for, it wasn't exactly something she looked for often. She puzzled about it for a moment and eventually gave up. "I'll bring my work laptop next time, then we don't have to worry about finding a computer. How about that?" It was a solution, though it didn't give her a very good feeling of fulfillment, telling the girl she'd be able to solve the problem next time wasn't exactly doing her any good right now. With that though, she pondered what to do now, she still wanted to look over the buildings, which she was doing, so she didn't see any reason to separate from Veronica for now. She simply carried on, walking with the girl, if the situation wasn't degrading, she was probably okay, right? |

Veronica laughs a bit. "It hard to offend me. You should not worry much." The girl does seem to take things rather easy. If nothing else, even if Asahina did misstep, the russian student likely would not hold it against her, or even make note of it. A slight blessing for their future interactions. Seeing her fumble with the phone she smiles and shakes her head. "Do not have computer sticks here. Get them later, bring when we meet again." She was speaking like it was a sure thing. Then again, she didn't see anything wrong with the young woman she spoke to. At least, nothing that'd make her want to avoid the girl. "Ah, laptop! Would work just fine, yes. Then maybe you share more designs? Would like more." It wasn't entirely clear what her interest in Asahina's work really was, but the curiosity seemed genuine, and she was being nice about it. Though each girl didn't fully understand the other's hobby, Veronica felt like there was a mutual appreciation for what they did. "But, come. Come! Clouds and sun still out. More gardens to see! Will take more pictures with new friend, have good time." Veronica was already beckoning her with. Her excitement appeared to erode her grammar a bit, but it was hard to not feel her enthusiasm. |
