Chloe had decided to wait around. What Ash had said before going into the office sounded like they were meant to provoke some sort of self reflection, to probe at her feelings, but she didn't feel much of anything these days. Instead, she waited around. There wasn't much else to do after all, and it would be rude to bail on him. When he emerged again, he looked baffled by the paperwork he had obtained. Standing up to greet him, Chloe spoke. "Did everything go alright?" |

"Huh? Nah, they're just racist against fat kids and people from Canada." Ash chuckles as he stops by Chloe, patting his... gut isn't right the word, he wasn't exactly thin, but that belly is more likely muscle with a layer of fat padding than much else. "Sorry if I got all profound, back there, by the way." He starts walking, closing up the folder and walking back towards the front door. As they get outside, he rubs the back of his head. "It's, uh... it wasn't so much a zen zinger as, just... like... I've had to deal with a lot of shit myself, I mean..." He frowns, trying to make the right words come out. In his mind, he keeps hearing his mother's words over and over, to make friends, to not just get defensive and aggressive about everything... but Ash, Ash is not a creature of words. And so, when he attempts to come up with something witty and meaningful, what actually comes out is: "Sometimes life just sucks, and there's nothing you can do about it." He stops in place a moment, just outside the door. "...that... came out wrong." He bops himself in the head with the folder, then sighs and looks at the truck, then Chloe. "I, uh... well, look. I don't know what's got you having a bad day, but all I'm trying to say is... when you have a bad day, sometimes it's best to just have a drink or go play video games and tell the problem to go fuck itself, rather than facing it head on. Unless the problem is a burning building, then you gotta deal with it first, but THEN you can tell it to go fuck itself." He scratches his head. "I... lost that metaphor somewhere there. Dammit. Sorry. I'm bad at words." Edited by Anonymoogle, Aug 20 2015, 01:10 AM.

"It's OK, you're trying to be nice. Well, let's have that picnic, and maybe I'll tell you." It wasn't said with much in the way of enthusiasm, more a statement of terms. Like she said, he was trying to be nice, that was easy to tell, but niceness alone wasn't going to end this bad day, the latest in a long string of bad days. She could at least be a little honest with him, though checking her pocket watch there wasn't an awful lot of lunch break left to do it in. "Follow me," she said, leading through an alternate route back to the car park. It was a little quicker, she had learned, after spending a few of her breaks wandering and mapping the place, an activity that she had always liked; she had spent a lot of time when she was younger mapping new places and pretending they were unexplored temples and the like. |

"Alright." He follows, and soon enough they're back at the truck, and he quickly grabs a couple things from the bed of it in back... mostly a small, empty beer cooler that he hastily fills up with the things he grabs, and a large red flannel quilted blanket, not exactly the sort for being on the ground, but it looks very soft. He throws it all in the cooler and hefts it out of the truck bed, then looks around. "Hmmm... aha! Over there." And away he went, looking around for a good place to set up... and finding the spot Chloe had picked out when she first saw him earlier, under the tree. He hurries over, sets the blanket down with a quick one-handed toss, then thunks down the cooler in the center of it as he flops down to a seat, everything a whirlwind of energy all of a sudden. "Commencing operation 'have a nice day'." He chuckles as he says it, then pulls out a six pack of grape soda and about half a dozen premade convenience store sandwiches of varying types, and a couple apples. It's all quite chilled. "Grab whatever you want, if you want anything. Otherwise... hang out and talk, I guess." He scratches his head. "Idunno what to start with, though." He unwraps one of the sandwiches, roast beef from the looks of it, and goes about nomming it while he waits for her to get settled. |

Five minutes. That was the time remaining until the bell would ring and she would leave for class. While not hungry, she could do with the hydration, so she took one of the grape sodas, breaking it open with a soft hiss, and gently sipped at it, bubbles dancing on her tongue. She was sat facing away from him, leaning forward slightly, her dark hair hiding sad eyes. There was some time listening to the rustle of the autumn breeze among the trees, and the distant sounds of people enjoying their last moments of relaxation before study resumed. Eventually, she broke the silence, speaking softly, evenly, without emotion. "My parents died in the spring." |

"...well... shit." That was a level of seriousness and sadness Ash was not expecting. He figured she had broken up with a boyfriend, or her cat had died, or maybe it was just that time of the month. Such is the thought process of someone who's used to just being able to tank everything that comes his way, that somehow, he just needs to find the right Something to do or say, and everything would be alright. Except even he knows that nothing he could say would bring back the dead. "I..." And so, lacking any real options, Ash mentally crossed his fingers and hoped for his old faithful option to work. He scooted over slightly and gave Chloe a hug. It was awkward, it was sudden... but it was genuine. Also Ash's eyes were watering. Manly tears, he would surely soon claim, but really, it was just that he was suddenly aware of how many times he was almost in the same situation, thanks to his father. He backs off after a moment, but then sniffles ever so slightly and rubs his nose. "Look, uh... I... don't know what to say... I almost lost my mom once, I know how that felt, but..." He clenches his fists, and flexes one arm, grabbing his bicep with the other in a pose that almost looked like Rosie the Riveter - just with more shoulders and facial hair. And manly tears. And bowing his head slightly to hide the manly tears. "Don't give up on living." He says it with a dramatic nod, then kinda just lets his arms fall. He looks pretty sad now too. "Being alone... sucks, that much I do know. It's why I ended up starting that show online, that I told you about... I was never real good at keeping friends, but I'll take fans. Fans are like friends, just only when you need them." He gives her a big smile and a thumbs up. It would be corny, and probably fake, but somehow coming from Ash it seems real, kind of like a big giant puppy. "So, uh... I don't know, I'm probably gonna be a shitty friend, but if you need it, I'll be a fan." |

Despite the advice of TV and movies, breaking her silence hadn't moved her into cathartic sobbing. Somehow, her eyes were dryer than Ash's. When he hugged her, she felt like a ship becalmed, unable to do anything but simply drift until something unexpected came along. It was hard to think of what to say next. He had offered friendship, so maybe he was willing to listen to a little more. "It sounds terrible on the face of it, but there's more to it. I don't have much extended family; my grandma is in a home with dementia and my aunt lived to far away. As the eldest, and technically a legal adult and next of kin, I had to identify the bodies." There was need for a pause there, but she didn't leave it too long before she continued. "I've had to consult with lawyer to organise the will, that's still ongoing. I've had to sell my childhood home, leave my sister in the care of my aunt. I'm too old to be taken into care but she isn't, so I had to make sure she could take her in. My aunt isn't... reliable. I've had to-", a tiny crack in her speech, swiftly corrected, "-had to organise the funerals. There's the life insurance, there's so much to it. I've had to do a lot of things." In the distance, the end of break bell rung, and almost by reflex, Chloe stood up and started to get ready to leave. |

Damn, I think I found someone who had more of a crap time than I did... Ash just kinda stares, eyes remaining watered. He was stunned, for lack of a better word, he'd always thought he handled things well, but this girl... she'd been through hell, and seems like she'd handled it perfectly, aside from ending up sorta cold and dead inside from it. Ash did, for the first time in his life, feel like he had found someone who could actually benefit from his hardship. And so, against better judgement. "I had to get into a knife fight with my dad after he burned down our house and tried to kill my mom and I. Twice. Then I sent him to prison, forever." When he says it, he's not looking at her, but when the bell rings and she gets up to go, he looks over to her. "For the first year, yeah, you lose the ability to feel, I think its what we do when we don't. It comes back eventually... for me it took two years and a couple hundred people on the internet telling me I was awesome. You, well... you'll figure it out. You already went through the worst of it." He stands up, picking up the abandoned can of Chloe's soda where she'd left it on the picnic blanket, and pulls out a blue sharpie, scribbling something on the side. "Hey. You, uh... forgot this." If she looked, on the side was a phone number, and the words "still willing to be your biggest fan". |

Chloe paused for a moment, listening to his story. It wasn't her alone who had suffered in this life, she knew that, but it was hard to keep perspective from the bottom of a dark pit. She kept silent as he spoke, and for a few moments after. It had taken some time for him, how long would it take for her? To feel something again, that would be nice, but right now she couldn't see a day where that would happen. Taking the can, she glanced at the writing on the side, not really taking it in that much. Pulling her things together, she started to move down the slope, but not before stopping and speaking. "Thank you. For being a fan." With that, she walked away towards her next class. |

"Anytime. Catch you later!" Ash gave a big, corny thumbs-up to Chloe, but keeps quiet as she walks off, after that. He flops back on the blanket, stressed, unsure... but oddly calm, closing his eyes and looking up into the tree as he continued to eat his sandwich. After a couple more minutes, he flips his headset up. Man... hell of a first day. I hope she'll be alright. In Ash's mind he was hoping she called back soon. Chloe wasn't the only one who felt alone, there... but deep down, as always, part of Ash's mind quietly assumed that he'd never see her again. And the sigh that came with that depressing acceptance was soon drowned out by the the next bite of cheddar and roast beef on rye. ~ End Scene ~ (You can add a Fool social link for Ash if you'd like, proto.)
