Alicia walked around the school, trying to get acquainted with her surroundings, hoping to break the monotony of the days leading up to the first day of school that involved little more than sitting in your room and doing nothing. It was a partially sunny late-summer day, but the sky was growing cloudier and the air felt humid. You could almost taste the metallic sensation that almost always indicates a coming storm, but the sky seemed to be holding up for some odd reason, waiting for something to happen.

She wore tight-fitting, faded blue shorts as well as a navy blue and white striped v-neck that was complemented by tennis shoes of the same color. She kept her wavy, ginger hair in loose pony tail that hung over one shoulder. But perhaps the most noticeable thing she had was a harnessed ferret that urged her onward.

It was a bit of an odd sight for most, but Alicia wanted to get out and didn’t want to leave Elwood in his cage. The ferret was anxious to catch a new smell he picked up on and he was trying to drag his way there, struggling against the confines of the harness. Alicia picked up her pace to alleviate the stress he was applying upon himself, practically into a mid jog.

The ferret led her to the courtyard, a couple benches were set up here, it was fairly quite. At a first glance she wouldn’t have noticed anyone there but there in fact was someone, a boy sitting alone. It seemed that Elwood had picked up upon his sent. She wasn’t sure if he wished to be bothered but Elwood was more than intent on making his presence known. She walked slowly as Elwood tried to climb the boy’s leg and sit on his lap, sniffing his face with curiosity. Elwood looked oddly pleased with himself.

“I’m sorry; I don’t know what has gotten into him today.” She had never seen him act in such a peculiar way, usually he only acted that way upon seeing her.

"Aagh!" Kyosuke grunted as he arched his aching back and shook his legs about. An entire day of walking around this huge place had done a number on his legs. There was so much to see! So much to do! Despite his feet aching, he was already feeling the excitement course through his veins... He had yet to find his dorm room yet but he could not care less at the moment; the excitement was simply too much. He jabbed at the air multiple times in an attempt to lose some of his excess energy, He wondered how many strong people were here... If this place had a martial arts club he planned to sign up straight away! From what he had seen so far, Rockport was filled with a variety of people from all kinds of places. The very thought of being able to fight against so many fighting styles sent shivers down his spine! With a content sigh, Kyosuke plopped himself down on a bench. AA gentle breeze blew by and cause a smile to form on his face.

With the wind came a large black bird as it touched down on top of a nearby tree branch. It stared at Kyosuke and he smiled back at it. "This is our new home now, girl. Looks like it's going to be one helluva' ride" he told the bird with a grin. The bird gave off a small caw in response to her companion. Suddenly, Kyosuke felt a force near his feet and he looked down with a puzzled expression to see a long furry creature tugging at his trousers. It seemed to be trying to climb up his leg but lost grip half way and slid back down. He smiled at the cute creature and bent down, slipping his hands underneath its front paws and picking it up. He held it in front of him and looked at it with curiosity. "Hey there, fella. What're you doing out here?" he asked it.

I’m sorry; I don’t know what has gotten into him today.” said a voice from nearby. He turned to see a girl who had just entered the area. She had gentle orange-ish hair that was tied in a hung over pony tail. She looked like she may have ran a bit.

"Oh, 's he yours?" he asked the girl and then setting the ferret down. "He's pretty playful by the looks of it!" he continued with a chuckle. He stood up and smiled at the girl, nodding his head in a slight bow. "I'm Kyosuke, New in school and Rockport." he said with a grin. It was then that the large bird took flight and swiftly landed upon her companion's shoulder, almost as if to say 'Dont leave me out'. Kyosuke looked at Chikara and then at the girl. "And this is Chika. Your friendly neighborhood raven!" he said on her behalf. The bird flapped its wings energetically and cawed happily.

Alicia was glad to know that Elwood’s disturbance was taken positively, sometimes people have the tendency to be turned off by such a creature, thinking that he is just a rat. As the boy inspected Elwood he intently sniffed both the boy who held him and then the raven that had perched itself on him. It was an odd sight, seeing a raven attempting to perched on something that is roughly it own size, if not smaller. Elwood rolled on his back in response, trying to get the raven off of him in what seemed to be the most comical way possible.

Alicia sat down on the bench next to her little fur ball, even when on a leash he still managed to get his way. The boy, Kyosuke introduced himself. “I’m Alicia, I’m new here as well.” She wondered just how far the boy moved to get here, was he from Japan itself of just another part of the country.

Upon introducing his raven, Chika. The bird seemed quite energetic, a trait she didn’t quite expect from a raven. Alicia did likewise with her companion, “And I believe you have already became introduced with Elwood.” She said as she stroked the ferret’s side, he leaned into her hand so she would stroke his stomach.

“A raven is quite an unusual pet, how did you manage to get one?” she asked genuinely curious. She watched as Elwood pawed the raven, wanting to play with it, such an occurrence was something she had never expected to see.

“I’m Alicia, I’m new here as well.” responded the girl to his introduction. He watched with interest as the two critters struggled with one another. It was quite amusing to watch. He move over to the bench as the ferret pawed at Chika, to which she responded with a playful peck.

"'S that so? Well, let's try to get along. We newbies have to stick together after all!" he replied with a chuckle. He stretched a little, enjoying the coolness of the day. "Whew... Man, this place is pretty big" he remarked, hunching over, placing his elbows on his knees.

And I believe you have already became introduced with Elwood.” said the girl on the behalf of her pet. Kyosuke gave a laugh in response as the two animals chased each other about. “A raven is quite an unusual pet, how did you manage to get one?” she asked

"That's a cool name. Pretty British soundin'!" he told her. The second question, however, caught him off guard. Even now, the memories of that time played across his eyes and uncomfortable sensations ran throughout his body. He looked down at the ground very briefly, in an attempt to gather his scattered thoughts. "Well... It's not really an interesting story. Found her when she was a baby back when i was younger. Couldn't just leave her there so I thought I may as well take care of her." he said, avoiding the topic slightly. It was the truth... but not the whole truth. It wasn't that he thought she was a stranger -though she technically was-, he was generally just uncomfortable in discussing that point in his life. He wanted to leave it behind and keep moving on. "What about you though? You don't exactly see people with ferrets everyday, haha!" he continued on. It was true, though. He had heard of ferrets as pets but had never really seen it himself, up until now. At this point, Chika was attempting to lift the ferret into the air, flapping her wings frantically as she did so. They got off the ground for about and inch before they both tumbled down, to which Kyosuke let out a hearty laugh. He would wait until she could answer his previous question before asking his next one; "So, whaddaya think about the place so far?" he asked, looking at her.

Alicia gave a sheepish smile in response to Kyosuke saying that as newbies, they should stick together. She agreed that the place was huge, but she only nodded in response.

She could tell there was some hesitation in regards to how he obtained his raven as a pet. Alicia didn’t force the issue; she understood that they all had their dark secrets. She instead took a different approach, “Well that is quite admirable of you, if you don’t mind me saying. Far too many would have probably left such a thing behind.” there was a tinge of sadness in her tone, enough to make someone wonder if she was truly speaking about the bird.

He reflected the question with a jovial tone, “What about you though? You don't exactly see people with ferrets everyday, haha!

“Perhaps not as much as a dog or a cat, but it’s unfortunately due to the whole ‘rodent stigma’ thing they seem to have over their head,” she said as she watched the two creatures play in a manner she never thought possible. “Plus their prone to trouble, as you may not have already noticed.” and as if on cue they went airborne for a moment. “Need I say more?” she said, joking as well. It was odd how comfortable she felt around him. Perhaps it was because he was more approachable than most she has none, or maybe the animals helped lighten the mood.

"So, whaddaya think about the place so far?"

“It isn’t much different than my last home really. I haven’t really gotten out here yet so I don’t have anything to compare it to yet.” She had kept herself within the confines of her dorm for the most part besides her excursion to the schools roof where she met Rei, the boy with blue hair. It seemed that they were polar opposites; one warm and jovial, the other cold and stoic. But she forced her mind to remain in the present, “What about you?”

Well that is quite admirable of you, if you don’t mind me saying. Far too many would have probably left such a thing behind.” remarked Alicia kindly.

Kyosuke scratched the bridge of his nose and let out an embarrassed laugh. "Ah... Hahaha... Thanks..." he stared up at the sky. The was one particular cloud that looked like a fish to him. There was something about how she said it though, that seemed a bit off from the relaxed tone she had been using all this time. It seemed like there was more to what she said than meets the eye, and Kyosuke was contemplating on asking about it. However, he pondered on the fact that there were things he didn't like talking about which meant that others had their own as well. He did want to reassure her though. "People wanna' do good things but... some of 'em are just scared. Can't fault em for that. I'm no different, heh" he continued on. "Guess some of us just gotta push through that fear... Though that's easier said than done, right?" he added with a chuckle at the end.

The girl went on to explain about how people seemed to think that ferrets were somehow in relation to rodents. Quite frankly, he couldn't see the resemblance... She also noted how they seemed to get into trouble, to which Kyosuke let out a laugh and a nod in agreement. "It isn’t much different than my last home really. I haven’t really gotten out here yet so I don’t have anything to compare it to yet.” responded the girl. Fair enough; she was right. One could not form an opinion that quickly, after all. “What about you?” she asked him.

Kyosuke put his hand to his chin and tilted his head for a bit. "Hmm.... Well, like you, I can't really say for sure just yet, but it seems pretty great!" he said with a grin. "It's almost like I can smell the change in the air... It's really exciting!" he said, excitement beginning to envelop him. Chika had become tired after all that playing around and she flapped up onto Alicia's knee. This girl seemed to give off a nice atmosphere to the bird, she didn't mind this kind of person. "Well look at that! Chika usually pecks people, haha!" Kyosuke remarked in surprise. "So, where d'ya come from?" he asked her.

She listened to the Kyosuke’s optimistic views on human nature. Alicia wasn’t quite sure if she agreed but she nodded anyway. He seemed to be an incredibly cheery individual. It seemed that was the drawing line between the two of them. He may have had her baggage, but is he too unable to let go of it.

It seemed that he too had yet to form an opinion of the place as well. “The year has yet to start, I’m sure we will grow more comfortable with the place in due time.” He said something about being able to smell something in the air. She was unsure as to whether or not it was intentional but there was something in the air. The very same metallic taste she had felt since she started her walk. The clouds were getting darker as well.

Her attention was broken by the raven who had decided to stand on her knee. Gingerly she stroked the ravens back, feeling her soft feathers. She wasn’t pecked yet so she continued for a bit. But half jealous and half not done playing with his new feathered friend, Elwood jumped up onto the bench between the two, expecting attention as well. But something made him stop and sniff the air, he smelled it too.

At first it was one drop of water, landing right on the top of Elwood’s head; causing him to back up into Kyosuke. It seemed the sky couldn’t hold on for much longer. It was as if it had waited for this fateful meeting prior to unleashing its rainwater.

Alicia turned to Kyosuke, “Perhaps we should go inside? I can answer your question in there,” she said motioning towards the dorm rooms that weren't too far away. She knew Elwood hated getting wet and she wasn’t sure if ravens are too fond of it either.

Kyosuke gave a hum of agreement to Alicia's former statement. Indeed, they would become more accustomed to this place the more they would go here. He was rather worried about the education part though.. With any luck, it wouldnt be as hard as it had been all this while. It was a major concern to him and one could almost see the worry on his usually cheerful face. Chikara enjoyed the care she was receiving, nuzzling he feathered head against the person's hand. Elwood hopped up onto the bench himself, looking a bit lost at the attention Chikara was getting.

"C'mere, you!" he growled playfully, hoping to pick up Elwood from behind. Were he to succeed, he would give the little fella good rubbing on his belly. Elwood was so furry and cute. Ferrets were such interesting creatures! With any luck, he wouldnt get bitten for his sudden antics. It was then that something fell upon Elwood's head. Kyosuke ran his thumb gently across the wet patch of fur. He looked up and just as he did so, another drop of water splashed down on his eye causing him to flinch and give off a yell. "Agh!" he grunted in pain, bringing his hands up to his eye. With his one open eye, he could indeed see that the sky grew darker by the second. They would need to move soon.

Perhaps we should go inside? I can answer your question in there,” suggested Alicia. He didn't quite know where exactly she wanted to go, but her nodded in agreement while rubbing his eye.

"S-Sure, lead the way!" he responded. It seemed that Chika was under her care at the moment and he was sure that at this point she wouldn't mind being carried by Alicia. It wasnt safe for her to fly at this stage. If Elwood didn't resist, Kyosuke would carry him with them as well. The ferret did not seem to like getting wet, and Kyosuke had a jacket to cover him with. Then, two raindrops fell on to Kyosuke's head. Then four more fell onto the ground and soon, the rain was coming down only a little less than a heavy shower. "Aah! We should get going!" he suggested, standing up and flinching underneath the rain. Hopefully, he was covering Elwood.

Alicia looked back, noting that Elwood was shielded by Kyosuke’s jacket. She in turn held Chikara, who had perched on her forearm, unsure how exactly to run with a bird. She led the boy to the dormitory, specifically to her room. There she figured the pets could have a little bit of free roam without causing a disturbance. She hadn’t heard any complaints about Elwood so she assumed that at least small pets were allowed.

The room was clearly in the midst of transition, most things still packed away in a couple cardboard boxes; while other things, namely her collection of photographs, had already been framed and hung up to the side of her bed. It was all kept fairly neat although not fully in its place. Placed besides the bed in the corner of the room was a wire cage with a hammock for Elwood when he rests. But despite all it had, unfortunately it wasn’t a room for entertaining; there wasn’t much furniture besides her bed and an office chair that sat opposite of the room.

“Go ahead and have a seat,” she said, handing Chikara back to Kyosuke in order to grab some towels for drying off; unsure if they were really necessary. But she gently tossed one to him anyway so he can dry off Chikara if needed.

Alicia sat down on the edge of her bed, trying to remember the question she was asked, “About your previous question. I’m from a city not too far north from here. What about you?” she said hoping to continue the conversation and that the change in scenery wouldn’t affect anything.

Kyosuke flinched repeatedly as the cold raindrops hit his body. Thankfully, Elwood was safely wrapped in his jacket as Alicia lead them inside. As soon as they were inside the building he breathed a sigh of relief, unwrapping the jacket in his arms and checking to make sure Elwood was alright. She lead them into a room which seemed to be her own. Bending down to set Elwood free, Kyosuke unwrapped the jacket and then slung it over his shoulder. Water was dripping off his hair and had moisturized his arms. He pulled at the wet fabric of his t-shirt and stuck his tongue out. "Eugh, it feels all weird and squishy now, haha" he said with a laugh. He noticed that Chikara was soaking wet as well and the raven tried to scatter about the liquid in the room, but he quickly clamped down on her wings and frowned at her. "Hey, hey! Not in someone else's room!"he scolded. The bird simply tilted its head and then cawed at Alicia.

Go ahead and have a seat,” she said, as she handed Chika back to him, grabbing some towels and throwing one over to him.

"Ah, thanks" he said, crouching down to the ground and sitting cross legged. When the towel came at him he reached for it but squirmed too much and fell on his back with a small 'Agh!'. He got back up with difficulty, the towel raised over his head with an expression of mock triumph on his face. The expression soon collapsed into a laugh, however and he pulled Chikara close, spreading the towel over her and gently scrubbing about her feathers. The bird did not complain, it even raised its wings so that he could wipe them properly.

About your previous question. I’m from a city not too far north from here. What about you?" said Alicia, probably in response to his previous query.

Kyosuke finished wiping Chikara and exhaled with satisfaction. "There! All clean" he said happily. He then placed the towel over his own soaking head and looked back up at her with a smile. "Really? The move must have been pretty easy on you, then!" he remarked with interest. Indeed, had he lived so close by, the transfer would have gone much smoother and he wouldnt have gotten in trouble with security at the airport for trying to bring along Chika without a cage...and on the plane. "I hail from Japan! Y'know, the motherland of games and giant robots?" he said with a grin. "Figured it was about time for some change in my life... So I decided to transfer here" he told her, a slightly less energetic tone as he was reminded of past memories. "And you? Any special reason you wanted to come here, too?" he asked her. He stood up, holding onto the towel's edges with both hands as he paced about the room. "Oh, hope you don't mind if I look around" he told her. Kyosuke's mind still had not figured out that he was doing it anyways... Most of the room seemed to be unfurnished and there seemed to be some boxes lying about. It was only given, considering she had just moved. Which was more than he could say for himself, considering he hadnt even FOUND his own room yet. He did, however, notice some rather impressive displays of photography on the walls. He was no expert at art but even he knew these were really good. "Whoa... Hey, did you take these yourself?" he asked her, Leaning closer to a picture to have a better look. He turned around and looked at her, thumbing over his shoulder with an impressed look on his face."These are really good!"

Alicia took the second towel, inspecting Elwood who seemed quite dry. She smiled a thanks towards Kyosuke who managed to keep him perfectly safe. So instead she realized she could focus on herself, her hair was dripping wet and clinging to her shoulder.

Although she tried to hide it, she too could help but laugh at his towel fiasco. What started as a sheepish grin quickly developed into laughter once she noticed he was alright, though it seemed like quite a struggle.

Upon being told of her origin, Kyosuke described that he was from Japan, calling it the land of games and robots. She grinned in response, tempted to mention he forgot Godzilla but decided against that lest she could possible offend him. One thing in particular that she caught on was that he had chosen to transfer here. "And you? Any special reason you wanted to come here, too?" he asked, looking a little restless with his towel.

“Hold on, I’ll get that for you,” she said, hoping to ease his nerves. She stepped into the bathroom with both towels to toss them both in her currently empty clothes hamper. While inside he asked her if he could look around. “Go ahead,” she said knowing there wasn’t anything to hide. She doubted he would go through her clothes or anything since his attention was directed to the photographs anyway. Upon stepping out she said, “I didn’t quite come at my own accord; my parents got a divorce so they sent me here.” she said without bitterness or malice, but simple indifference; a clear indication that she wasn’t too fond of either of them. She didn’t bother to say she wasn’t wanted by either of them, for they had only just met.

He asked her if she was the photographer of the framed photographs that hung on the wall. “Yes, I did,” she said with a slight hint of pride. It was her one hobby, besides tarot readings. She smiled with sheepish satisfaction upon having her work complimented. “Thank you so much,” she said with a shy tone that almost seemed to dip below the range of normal human hearing.

She took what could easily be her hundredth glance at the photographs she had taken. Each of them had a story, a memory tied to them. There was a wide variety of subjects but nature and abstraction seemed to take the majority. But there wasn’t a single portrait to be found amongst her collection, a clear sign of her shyness and lack of social graces.

“I didn’t quite come at my own accord; my parents got a divorce so they sent me here.” Alicia responded, her tone not carrying any sense of resentment or discomfort, as one might expect.

Kyosuke frowned slightly at the sentence, his energy levels dropping slightly. "I'm sorry to hear that..." he remarked. He wondered why she didn't seemed to mind mentioning the fact, but he guessed that she had her reasons for doing so. Taking one last look at the photographs on the wall he made his way over to where Chika was and sat down next to her. The bird was inquisitively examining its strange new habitat. Alicia thanked him for his words and he grinned happily at her. Kyosuke began rocking back and forth slightly, hearing the pattering of the rain outside. They had mostly run out of things to talk about, but he literally couldn't leave just yet. He was a bit uncomfortable, thinking that he was being a bit of an imposition. "Hey, listen, i'm really sorry about invading like this. I'll be on my way the minute the rain begins to let up!" he assured her. He was still curious about where she came from though, especially after what she had told him. "So what was it like back where you used to live? Lotsa ferrets?" he said, speaking the last part while looking over to Elwood.

She silently noticed the boy’s apprehension, unsure if it was in regards to what she had just said. Social graces were always something she had struggled to wrap her head around. There was always something she missed, whether it be the tone of another or a hidden meaning behind someone’s words. But whatever it was, she couldn’t help but wonder if it was her.

“ Don’t worry about it,” she said, beginning to feel a little uncomfortable as well. “It was the least I could do.”

He then asked her about where she was from, jokingly commenting on its population of ferrets. “It is more or less the same as here; same style, same culture. I just have to learn where everything is really.” she said wondering just how hard it will be since she had always lived such a sedentary life. She spent much of her life locked away from the rest of the world, it had almost become second nature. But she shifted her focus to Elwood who, after an eventful day, had fallen asleep in his bed in the cage. A subtle, rhythmic snore could be heard from his direction as his chest would expand to its fullest capacity before a quick exhale followed.

“As for the ferret population, I had never seen any wild ferrets running amuck,” she said, unable to stop the grin that formed on her face in response to such a silly thought. She then decided to turn the question back to him, “What about Japan, what is it like?”

She seemed to reassure him that he was causing no problems. This allowed Kyosuke to sigh in relief, at least he had peace of mind in that aspect. She further went on to answer his question by stating that it was similar to Rockport, but that she needed to get used to the layout. The two of them watched the exhausted ferret as it slept... It looked quite peaceful.

It was a strange thing for Kyosuke, interacting like this... Back in Japan people would call him the naive wierdo and would actually put effort into makign sure they did not interact with him... And yet here he was, conversing with someone as if he had been doing so all his life. And although some of it still clung on to him, much of his pain in life had been left behind in Japan. In Rockport, no one knew who he was. He was a blank book with a story to fill and that gave him hope... hope that he could still live an eventful life. He let out a small sigh of satisfaction, for once savoring the silent atmosphere and contemplating on the fact that he may have made a friend.

As for the ferret population, I had never seen any wild ferrets running amuck,” she said, grinning. “What about Japan, what is it like?” she asked him.

Kyosuke leaned back slightly, looking up at the ceiling in thought. "Well... it's different, I guess. It's not nearly AS cultural as this place but uh... it's, it's not too bad once you get used to it" he said in response no quite sure on how to describe his homeland. It wasn't exactly that he resented it, but rather that he hadn't truly thought that much of it. "It was interesting though! You got to see something new everyday. All those conventions with those people that cosplayed were pretty fun to go to from time to time." he said. He pulled his phone out of his -thankfully dry- pocket and glanced at the timing. It seemed to be getting late... But it was then that something occurred to him. "Oh hey, well I know we just met and this is crazy, but could I have your number, maybe?" he asked her. He then took a minute to go over what he just said. He then sprang up in a panic "Oh! But, ah, no not like that! I wouldn't do that! Well, not to say you arent a good looking person, YOU ARE but I mean i wouldn't do that when i just met somebody!" he blurted out. "We-Well, it's just that I don't really have many friends so I was just... Well I... Ah..." he muttered out, trailing off. Way to friggin' go, Kyosuke. Way to friggin' go.

Alicia actively listened to the boy as he described his homeland. She has seen pictures of the place and had always wanted to go there, but regardless as beautiful the place was it was a cultural world apart.

That was when Kyosuke began to stumble on his very own words, something she was far too guilty of. It seemed he too wasn’t the most socially graceful of speakers as well.

He had asked for her number. At first she raised her eyebrow with curiosity as to just exactly he would want such a thing for but that only made him stumble over his words more. She couldn’t help but blush in response to him saying she was good looking. She couldn’t help but to smile in both embarrassment and pity for the boy, completely understanding his situation. If it was her she would have probably done just as bad if not worse than he.

“Don’t worry,” she said in a reassuring tone as she pulled out her phone, knowing it was the quickest way to reassure him, “I understand what you meant.” She said her number aloud to him, double checking to be sure that he got all of the numbers correctly.
