Can't Back Down The music room was filled with, well, music as some of the other students from the previous year were practicing a piece that was written and set out for everyone. Even though they hadn't seen each other over summer break the small group there was making quite the scene with the piece. Where did they get such a piece they were practicing on? One of their very own. The girl at the piano sporting the waist length black hair and black beret jamming away at the piano while shouting out to students in the room who were getting off key or falling behind on the tempo. The song came to a close with everyone chatting among themselves and enjoying the piece. Everyone began putting their stuff away as they thanked her for the wonder piece and wondered what else she had planned for everyone later. Miya was still in a musical mood and put away the current piece, while taking the rest off the stands to revise them later, and put a new piece on the piano. Setting up a pair of speakers on a nearby table she pulls out her mp3 player and sets the background beat minus the piano for the piece and sits down at the piano, hitting play on the mp3 player's remote while starting into the piano. "Bravo, bravo; encore, encore!" a voice from the now-opened door sounded out as the performance ended. The boy standing in the doorway would've clapped had he not been forced to keep a hand on his cane to remain upright, but unfortunately it continued to restrict him from expressing his full pleasure from the angelic sounds that had just flew out of that piano. He remained in the doorway; not entering the room without the lady's permission first, should she not want any company at the moment. The figure in the doorway continued to speak once more. "But in all seriousness; that was a lovely piece, simply marvelous!" Travis spoke, increasing his volume a little this time. He truly enjoyed the piece, hell; he would've kept walking down the hall to continue his one-man tour of the school he was to be attending had he not stopped to take in the song that had started playing as he strolled by the music room. His curiosity had been peaked at that; so he had poked his head into the room and was treated to the mistress's song. He decided to keep the conversation going; despite the fact that he had barley let the woman speak since he started talking. "Do you... play often?" Travis asked hesitantly, realizing that he might have been cutting her off this whole entire time. |

Miya turned around and stopped midway her piece, the mp3 player still playing the background music. She had figured there wouldn't have been many people at the school but didn't expect anyone outside the band members to be in this part of the school. Still it was good to see someone who enjoyed her performance. Spinning around to look at her audience of one, she brushed her bangs over her left eye and turned off the mp3 player. "You liked that? Thanks. Composed it myself honestly. So I think that answers your question of me playing often. Glad you enjoyed it though. I never know how these'll sound without the rest of the band playing considering I only know how to play the piano and a few string instruments." Miya stands up and walks over to the boy, her coat swaying as she walked. Looking up at him she removes her beret and begins spinning it on her right index finger as she crosser hers arms. She figured it would be polite to do that much anyway. "Name's Miya. Charmed. What are you doing in this part of the school anyway? I was just getting some of the older students ready for band class with a new piece I wrote for us. They seemed to enjoy the upbeatness of it." |

"Name's Miya. Charmed." the young woman told Travis, introducing herself after getting up off the piano and approaching him. "Travis Alphonse Lance. 'S a pleasure to meet you." the boy said, giving what some could just pass as a bow. Miya continued; "What are you doing in this part of the school anyway?". He brought a thumb up to his chin in thought; "Oh, ya know; getting a feel for the surroundings, maybe meeting a few people: it is nice to have a few friends before you even start the school year, right?". He let his eyes wander around the music room as he spoke; taking note of the chairs, the desks, windows, and the rest of the things he couldn't help but instinctively note. He mentally shook himself back to his senses and continued to listen to Miya as she spoke. "I was just getting some of the older students ready for band class with a new piece I wrote for us. They seemed to enjoy the upbeatness of it." she continued, her words reminding Travis of the passing group of students he saw in the halls shortly before he had been lured into the music room by the piano's song. They were talking about the piece they had just played, so he made the connection that they were likely members of the Music Club. "Heh, I can tell; they were still talking about it well on their way down the halls." Travis told her, chuckling a little after the comment. "You clearly must be a talented musician if you left that much of an impact on them simply after practicing." he complimented once again, his face gaining a slight red tint when he realized he might laying the compliments on a little too thick. |

Miya shifted her stance and flicks her beret into the air, maneuvering her head to catch it with the bill facing forward as she tilted it as she continued to eye the boy. So the others did enjoy it as much as she thought. This brought a smile to her face as she tilted her head again. The boy, Travis he called himself, bowed and this made Miya laugh. "No need to be so formal. It's not like you're trying to ask the girl you've had a crush on for years out on a date. Or are you?" A playful tone in her voice as she teased Travis. She wasn't giving him any ideas but it was her type of humor. She tended to take things and turn them into embarrassing moments at times but still made people smile. "Well I have composed concert level pieces but I've never actually had a chance to hear them in concert in front of a crowd. Normally just hear it when I can convince some of the band members to come play it with me." By this point she had noticed his face turn read. Did she do something to embarrass him? She hadn't meant to outside of her little joke. She figured to make this funnier for her. "Oh my god you really don't have a crush on me do you?" |

"Oh my god, you really don't have a crush on me; do you?" Miya suddenly said out of the blue after Travis' realization that had caused him to blush. He was silent and still for a moment, and then suddenly started waving his hand side to side; as if to say "Woah-hoah-hoah, slow down". "Hey, hey, hey, hey! I was simply thinking I was throwing out too many compliments back there to sound like I was being honest." Travis suddenly blurted out, pleading his case as he continued his frantic hand motions. Inside his head; he was face-palming himself repeatedly, why was he suddenly losing his cool, he barley even knew this woman! He decided to tease her back a little in response. "...Or maybe I do have a crush on you and that was an attempt at flattery." Travis said, leaning in towards her playfully. He leaned back to his upright stance and gave a wholehearted chuckle. "I'm just toying with you a little; I've never seen you before in my life... as far as I remember at least." Travis stated, scratching his head a little as he tried(and failed) to recall any memories he had of ever meeting this woman previously. He mentally shook his head and attempted to change the subject: "So; these are concert-level pieces you're composing? Where'd you learn to compose 'em?". |

Miya went into full blown laughter. So he had SOME humor to him as well. Miya was still amused by his reaction as well. Always fun to mess with people every so often that's for sure. She still wondered how far she could push him but her other side kept that part down. Travis seemed nice enough anyway. "Take more then a few words to land a date with me. If I was interested in the dating scene anyway not exactly anything I want to deal with right now. Don't want to be one of those typical teenage girls who believe they need a man in their life at such a young age. And no we haven't met, pretty sure I would remember the accent." When Travis lean towards her Miya got in his face and batted her one visible eye as she spoke before bursting out in laughter as she leaned backwards and grabbed her stomach. She wasn't mocking him or anything just enjoying herself a little too much. "Where did I learn?" Her head tilted. That was a good question. Where DID she learn. She just began doing it a few years ago and can't remember how really. "I played the piano for many years prior to learning how. It just takes a lot of time and patience. Lots and lots patience. Getting all the melodies to sync right, the tempo smooth and fitting. I didn't have a teacher really just myself and looking at other music. The hard part is actually getting them all to sound right." |

The two shared a good laugh; Travis felt like the two were enjoying each others company. His legs felt tired, so he slipped past Miya and helped himself to one of the seats in the room as she gave her explanation. Her answer sounded pretty simple; she played the piano in the years before, gave a brief explanation surrounding the difficulty of actually playing the instrument, but one particular detail in her story stood out to him; "I didn't have a teacher really; just myself and looking at other music.". It took him a second to register this comment; but then it finally got through to him: She taught herself how to play an instrument as complex as the piano. Travis almost flew himself back in his seat when he realized how skillful this lady was. "I- How did y- WHAT?! You taught yourself how to play?! That's amazing!" he exclaimed; the volume of his voice significantly increased, his tone now one of shock and amazement. He was genuinely impressed by the amount of skill Miya possessed; he had heard pianists in some of the high class clubs his family visited back in Vegas who were just about as skilled as her; but he had heard that they had spent the majority of their lives playing the piano, and these were men who were reaching the later years of their lives. "Do you plan on playing professionally someday, cause in my honest opinion; you could dwarf my mother's fortune in a couple of concerts if you refined your skills even more." Travis asked, a hint of that flabbergasted tone still stuck to his voice as he spoke. |

"Hmm? IS it that surprising?" Miya didn't really think much of her talents. She had learned them while she was growing up and she just found it easy to do what she did with music. Was it really as difficult as he was making it seem? She wasn't sure at all. Music just came to her like riding a bike. Just long long hours of writing and making the different pieces match as well as more practice. "You think so? I honestly do want to hold my own concert and have my pieces played before major musicians or Hollywood composers and see where that goes. Or be that girl singing and playing jazz down at a local club. I would love the second one more than the first though." Miya did a little dance, swinging her arms slightly to the right then the left before pulling her beret up a bit. She didn't know why but she felt like dancing at the moment. Then again Jazz did that to her. She signed a bit before returning leaning against the nearest wall, her hands falling into her pockets. "It would be wonderful to be noticed for such big concerts though. Sadly I don't think big time composers or directors will be looking to listen to a random girl's music." |

Travis contained a slight chuckle as he observed Miya's dance. Despite the lack of music; she had still felt the urge to dance. He would've gotten up and joined her in her little dance; but alas, his leg wouldn't have allowed it. So, to make up for this; he tapped a slight beat on the floor with his cane(Which had been laying across his lap all this time.) as she danced. Then the happy mood was over when Miya returned to leaning against the nearby wall, her hands deep in her pockets. "It would be wonderful to be noticed for such big concerts though. Sadly I don't think big time composers or directors will be looking to listen to a random girl's music." Miya stated, Travis processing it as a sort of sorrowful observation. He decided to console her a little from his seat. "Well; nobody expected Francis Albert Sinatra, the high-school dropout who became a delivery boy for the Jersey Observer to ever accomplish anything, did they?" Travis said, attempting to sound reassuring as he brought himself up to his feet through the help of his cane. "Where did he end up? One of the most famous jazz and pop artists of the 20th century!" he continued loudly, moving his way over to the piano, intent on observing the instrument a little bit while Miya continued. |

"I know my talents. It's just I don't see anyone being catching me in their net." She knew how grand her talents were and knew that if she was found there was a good chance she could become the famous musician she wanted to be but until such time happened she would hold onto her dream. It was all she could do until it came true. Honestly she didn't like the piano the school offered. It needed to be tuned frequently for it to work right for her. Or rather sound right to her ears. She watched him walk over to the piano and begin looking it over. Honestly she didn't like the piano the school offered. It needed to be tuned frequently for it to work right for her. Or rather sound right to her ears. It was also used by everyone else so it was tuned by different people. It wasn't till now she noticed the cane. "You injured or something? Or is that just to look fancy? And if you want I could teach you the basics of the piano. Dunno though it could take a while even for that." |

Travis was amazed she hadn't noticed the cane earlier. At the mention of the cane; he turned his gaze down to it and began to subconsciously rub the metal dog-head on the top of it, almost as if he were petting it. "Oh; muscle defects and slight deformities. Serious pain in the hide to walk on so the doc suggested a wheel-chair. Let's just say Papa didn't take kindly to the concept of his son in a chair all of his life so we got a cane and a couple of repair bills for a broken window and a busted wheelchair." Travis explained, chuckling a little at the story he told in the end, it was one of the few good tales his mother told him about his father. There was a slight melancholic tone stuck to his voice as he was explaining; he was wandering on worse times, so he shook his head a little and snapped himself back to reality. "Uh... No, no-no, I-I'm good I don't need any- heheh- piano lessons." he blurted out, some of that sad tone-of-voice still stuck to his words. "If I ever need any music; I'll know who to call." Travis stated, chuckling a little as his mind's focus shifted back onto Miya. Edited by ArchdukePickles, Apr 14 2013, 01:12 AM.

"So bum leg huh? That's gotta suck. Though I don't think throwing a wheelchair out the window was a smart move. Funny, but hope no one got hit. Well if they were hit then they would, well, have a wheelchair to take them inside right?" She chuckled at her dark humored joke. It was rather funny to her but she found very little not funny anyway. It made things a lot easier to deal with anything and laughter was one way to enjoy yourself. Wither Travis had the same reaction who knew. She just enjoyed her own jokes. "Well I don't think you'll find any better teacher. Well sure there is quite possibly better people out there but meh. I'm pretty sure I'm the only student around here who could teach you as well as some of the teachers around here." |

Travis chuckled a little at the dark joke; he had to admit, it was at least a little funny. "Hell; if somebody did get hit, he probably could've tossed a stretcher too." Travis added, continuing to chuckle. He had to admit; it felt a little good to laugh in regards to his disability. He breathed a sigh of relief as Miya continued to offer lessons. "No, I'm fine; honest, I just wanted to examine the instrument a little." Travis said as he glided his hand across the piano's construct, taking care not to put to much force down on certain areas or knocking into things that might cause the instrument to break. He lightly tapped on the two keys on the far right side repeatedly, making a sound reminiscent of a small bell. He cracked a grin and chuckled at the sound and then wandered away from the piano towards the direction of the chair he had previously sat in before he had stood up. He plopped down back into the chair and was silent for a few minutes. He tried to think of something to keep the dying conversation going. He spoke up eventually, asking a rather simple question; "So, is this your first year here at the Ravencroft?". |

She laughed at the thought of a stretcher being thrown out the window. That would have been rather ironic after the wheelchair anyway. She did wonder if she was going too far though. Well Travis was making fun of his own disability so it might be alright. Still it made her wonder if she was being too pushy with her lesson offers. "Alright my bad. I like teaching so sorry it seemed like I was trying push it on ya. More piano for me I suppose." Miya shrugged as she said that, indifferent on the either manner. She listened as he tried a few notes. The same two notes over and over. It sounded like a doorbell, a sound Miya was used to. she almost went into Teach Mode to tell him what he was doing but she held back. Nothing was needed to be said about someone having a little fun. "Naa been here four years now, graduating in the spring....You're gettin rather bored I take it? If so we could walk around the school and I could show you around and answer what I could. Or we could just accompany each other to the school gates and see each other off. Whichever." |
