Nia walked down the hall, mildly irritated already. She felt the urge to punch a locker but abstained knowing her hand would only make a loud noise, her metal hand. It has been the fixation of every single person she had encountered. They spoke of accommodations when all she wanted was to forget about its existence. Even though the physical wound has healed, the scars go much deeper, and bringing it up only widened the wound. But she didn’t show any of it to the teachers and administration she had encountered, such acts of defensiveness would have only gotten her in trouble by her parents.

She exited the building; the heat of summer was still present, although she was unsure for just how much longer it will stay. She adjusted the strap to her black tank top as it tried to slip down her shoulder. She walked along the sidewalk, not exactly focusing on where she was going.

But lack of observation whilst in motion can often lead to an impact between two people. One moment she was on her feet, the next moment she collided with someone and was suddenly on the ground. Her prosthetic arm banged against the ground, unharmed, but emitted a loud, metallic sound; as if to announce to whoever had listened that she was different.

It was just another day, another ordinary day in Rockport for Elric, though as per instructions from his grandfather he would go up to the school and see about helping the younger students get better acquainted with the buildings layout before the new semester starts as well as check out the dorms as he would be staying in them this year, it wasn't a difficult thing to do but rather something he'd rather not have to do if given the choice. If anything he'd rather tool around the city and goof off but duty calls and this time he couldn't shirk it.

It was about noonish and the summer heat was still beating down on the world prompting Elric to shed his jacket and sling it over his shoulders. The school was as big and wonderfully maintained as it had ever been. Elric made his way past a few students who already seemed familiar enough with the school he gave a few more a couple of passing glances.Unfortunately the peaceful stroll to the school would end abruptly.

The amount of physical contact was brief though but the results were anything but.Elric had lost his balance and nearly fell the person who blindsided him wasn't as lucky."Hey man, watch were the hell you're going!" Elric shook his head for a moment still a bit shook up from the encounter, and much to his surprise it was a girl that knocked him off balance.Everything about her was normal, except for her arm...it clearly wasn't 'hers' and made a metallic sound when it made contact with the ground.

"Uh you alright?"

Nia checked her arm prior to turning her gaze upward. Although more durable than all of the bones in her body, the lack of tactile sensations made her more cautious for her alien appendage.

"Hey man, watch were the hell you're going!"

“Excuse me! Who do you think you a-“ she said, cutting herself short the moment she looked up at the boy. She wasn’t sure if he was sorry but the sound her arm clearly changed his tone. She sighed quietly upon being asked if she was alright. “Could be better, hitting the pavement isn’t exactly what I had in mind,” she said with her tone dripping with sarcasm, although it was clearly only displaced anger. The day had been eating away at her since dawn.

“It should have been just another school year unlike any other,” she thought in retrospect, “I should be playing piano for the band and choir.” But it seemed that luck wasn’t in her favor. Her summer should have been filled with days at the beach and working, but instead it was filled with surgery and rehabilitation for the accident. And even when it seemed that this infernal period of her life could finally subside she had to talk with her teachers about possible adjustments and accommodations. And now before her stood a boy, a boy whom she had bumped into. She felt a slight tinge of shame knowing that he had nothing to do with her situation, but it all just came too natural.

Truth be told the girls metallic hand was a big attention grabber for Elric as his glance shot all around the girls body he always found his eyes drawn back to her prosthetic arm. He was so distracted by it he almost missed her words as she reply to his inquiry about her being alright after falling, and while she cut off her first reply she certainly didn't for the next that just oozed sarcasm.

What was this woman's problem? It was clearly an accident right so why all the sass when he was just trying to be nice? Well she was clearly shorter then him so maybe she was younger then him too it was his job to show new students around the school before the semester officially started anyway, so he'd try to deal with the sarcastic girl before him.Slowly he reached his hand out to help her up with his left hand, his grandfather would skin him alive if he left a lady like that for too long.

"So lets get you up off the ground....unless you wanna stay down there."

Replying with about half as much sarcasm as the girl he had knocked over Elric wasn't sure if she would accept his offer he was almost positive that after the way they ran into each other and the words that came as a result she was sure to say no. But he had to at least try to extend a helping hand since he did cause the problem.

She noticed the boy extended his left hand rather than his right. It was for this very reason she took his hand. She would have hated having to extend that cold, lifeless construction that is her new appendage.

“Well as much fun the cement and I have been having, I prefer being on my feet,” though she was still being sarcasm, the venom in the previous sentence was no longer present. Though not quite jovial, it held a bit more of a joking tone.

For the first time she actually studied the boy whom she had just met. The first thing she noticed was his grey hair that contradicted his face that was far from aged, one could only assume that it was dyed that way. Though she lacked the audacity to say such, she couldn’t help but note that he was quite attractive.

Before letting go of his hand she introduced herself as a way of getting out of a handshake, “I’m Nia, and sorry about my previous outburst, with the luck I’ve been having you would think someone has a vendetta against me.” She wondered why she had said such to a boy who she had just met but it was already out in the air; Although she wasn’t exactly inclined to elaborate yet.

It would be an understatement to say he was relieved she didn't turn down his gesture. As she took his hand Elric could feel how soft her hand was probably a great deal softer then her other hand.He helped her get onto her feet and immediately noticed she was pretty light and about two heads shorter then he was.He took a step back to get a better look at her though he didn't let her hand go. She replied to the gesture with a sly remark that while sarcastic didn't ooze any negativity as compared to her first.

She introduced herself with a handshake before letting his hand go, going on to give her name as well.He would return her favor in kind but in a few moments time after he got through sizing her up.He was able to get a much better look at her now that she was standing, his eyes scanned her over a few times, he would have admitted to having a hard time stopping himself from staring, but for now he had to be polite and give her his name as well.

"So yea, the names Elric, again sorry if I blind sided you but you show really watch were the hell you're going." His words were spoken in a similarly joking manner as if to counter Nia's own manner of speaking. He tilted his head a tad as he pondered a way to ask about her day since it seemed to be on the front of her brain so to speak.

"Well how's your day been? I mean it can't be as bad as you're making it sound can it?"

She would have acted defensively in response to the boy who was sizing her up, but she didn’t notice for she was doing the very same for a moment. Her eyes lingered for just as long as his as she stood unsure how exactly to appropriately respond.

He responded to her introduction, using a similar teasing tone to the one she had just used when he said that she should watch where she was going.

She tilted her head to the side in response, “I could, but what’s the fun in that?” She said as her mood began to shift from a tempest to a gentle midsummer shower; her mind finally distant from the memory of her orientation. But the boy had asked her such, in a way that couldn’t have been more direct. “The day has been full of sympathy, both false and genuine.” although she was unsure which irritated her more; At least you could ignore false sympathies. “I have been to this school since freshmen year and now they treat me like it is my first year here,” she said, unsure of how to word it otherwise. She wished to change the topic; her hand rubbed the border between metal and flesh on her right arm, a sign of clear discomfort. “Are you new here?”

"Ha, I guess you make a bit of a point though I prefer to get a chance to see who I'm gonna run into.' Elric laughed a bit in response to his own little joke, though his laughter was cut a bit short by her following response to his question about how her day had been. What little bit of a smile he had had subsided a bit and his expression was more blank then anything else.

"Well, that must suck, though I can't really say too much about it." Elric tried to contain any questions he might have about Nia's arm it was obvious that wouldn't be a good subject, since from what he could gather from her rubbing the spot where her body connected with it might be a bit of a sore subject. So he'd avoid it for now, but it was defiantly something he was gonna have to ask about.

"Uhhh me? I've been here for four years now, this is my last year before I graduate.I'm supposed to be showing new students around but all the green horns seem to either be scooping the place out already or somewhere I can't see 'em.So that really just leaves me and you I guess but you already know this place well enough I'm guessin'."Elric sighed as he slide his hands into his pocket. Still taking a a moment every now and then to sneak a peek at her.

Nia knew the boy was holding back a barrage of questions, many the result of her previous statement. She was unsure if she should just tell him can simply speak his mind. Hell, she was already being honest with the kid, so why can’t he?

“Because the truth hurts,” she thought to herself, silencing all notions to the contrary.

The boy said he was here for all four years. With the two of them attending the same school for three years, she wondered why she had never noticed him before. Although she knew she kept herself pretty close to that niche her afterschool activities had predisposed her with. But still, that didn’t justify the fact she had never even caught his glimpse before.

She heard the boy sigh as he slipped his hands in his pockets as he talked about the currently invisible freshmen that seem to have eluded him thus far. She wasn’t an expert on body language but it seemed he desired to have company.

“Well I have nothing better to do, you want to walk around?” Her melodic tone was a bit more awkward this time, a clear indication that saying such put her way out of her element. She wouldn’t typically associate with someone in such a manner.

"Well there ain't anywhere too entertaining to go but if you insist well lets go."It was a bit out of the ordinary, he really wasn't expecting her to suggest that though he would be lying if he said he wasn't glad to be able to have the chance to keep conversing with her.

Elric made a bit of a quick gesture to lead her on, but decided to take the lead anyway though he wasn't sure which direction to walk in since as far as he was concerned there wasn't much to do, but he would with it.

He headed off towards the direction of the track, it'd be a bit of a walk but at least it would give him time to get a conversation started, they would have been walking for almost five minutes if Elric was good at keeping time before he managed to ask a decent question.

"So yea, were you born in Rockport or did your folks move here from out of state?"Elric tried his best to make the question sound as interesting as possible, he was pretty sure he already failed though, his tone was damn near flat though it bore a hint of enthusiasm. But he would try at least, hell he could even pass this off to his grandfather as escorting someone around the campus.

She nodded in agreement when he said there wasn’t a whole lot to do on the campus, “We’ll find something to do I’m sure.” She knew that the place wasn’t exactly dead, practices were just beginning to start and the school was preparing for the new school year.

She followed beside the boy to his left. He had asked her if she was from here, “I was born here; we moved just recently though it was still within Rockport.” she said with a bit of unintended disdain. She didn’t tell him that they left because of her and her father’s medical bills. It seemed that whatever she said it always led towards the accident, everything in her life changed at that very moment and now she feels like she cannot get it out of her mind.

It was then she realized they were heading to the track field, an area that she was more than familiar with. Although it wasn’t her favorite thing to do, it was one of the few things she could continue after the accident. It was perhaps the only thing left untouched in her life by the accident.

The walk to the track was pleasant to say the least, nothing out the ordinary save having a girl walk with him though you wouldn't see him complaining in the slightest about that one fact. And while he listened to her explain her origins he couldn't help but think inwardly about his own though it was about as simple as Nia's had been.

As they finally arrived at the track Elric stopped for a moment to contemplate what he could try to use as conversational leverage, he still had to answer Nia's question so he would worry about keeping the talk going through that.

"Well I was born in Georgia, and lived there for a good while before....my father decided I should live with my grandpa for a while and that's how I ended up in Rockport." His tone once the word father escaped his lips became cold and almost detached from the conversation as if merely mentioning the word threw him off.His eyes focused a bit as he looked around the track a bit. After a brief pause he walked over to some of the bleachers and sat down on the first row

"Well Nia you've been goin' to this school for 'bout as long as me surely you must have somethin' you like to do round here right?" His tone had lightened a bit though it still seemed to have some distance to it, like he was trying to find his way back to the conversation.

Nia noted the tone in regards to his father. She for one had little conflict with her father, but it left her curious about his past. Yet she kept her lips sealed, she had just as many shadows that she tried to ignore as he and reopening has never helped anyone before.

"Well Nia you've been goin' to this school for 'bout as long as me surely you must have somethin' you like to do round here right?"

“Well we are currently walking to one of them. I run a 440 which is classified as middle distance,” she said hoping he understood. “I also sing in the school choir as an alto,” she said unsure as to why she mentioned her place in each of her afterschool activities. But deep down inside she wished to feel accepted and useful, and in each activity knowing her place allowed her to appropriately contribute in each activity.

“What about you? You must do more than humor everyone you bump into, she said in a mildly teasing tone. Though she would have never said anything out loud for fear of looking like a fool, she was having quite a good time with the boy whom she had bumped into

""Heh that's more then I can say for myself missy. Elric almost reflexively said it in a teasing tone, his mood wasn't any better but at least the conversation was fun enough to keep him from being too wrapped up in his own feelings.

"Cause I don't really do a damn thing around here aside from show up and do whatever the fuck these people tell me." Elric slide over a bit and motioned Nia to sit next to him though if she did he would try to keep his distance, no real reason to seem creepy. She was certainly attractive but most girls are to Elric as long as they were decent in the face and had a bit of meat on em.

"Hmmm so you got a reason why I ain't ever see you around here, missy? " Again he came at her with a teasing tone, it seemed that was all the two currently had in common besides skin tone and a mutual lack of things to do as far as today went.

Nia tried to decipher his tone, but couldn’t help on anything other than the term ‘missy’. She wasn’t sure if it was a term of endearment, which made her uncomfortable, or simply a joking term her typically uses, which she didn’t mind quite as much.

"Cause I don't really do a damn thing around here aside from show up and do whatever the fuck these people tell me." He also seemed a little bitter about being here; it was vaguely similar to his tone in regards to coming here. She sat beside him as he scooted over. She kept a reasonable distance that was comfortable, but not at the cost of having to speak up to hear one another. She crossed her legs, which resulted in her posture leaning slightly in his direction, though only minimally.

“Don’t we all, were all here out of obligation, one way or another.” she said soundly oddly philosophical.

“Hmmm so you got a reason why I ain't ever see you around here, missy?" he said using that term once more.

Nia made an exaggerated shrug in response, “I usually stick with the other musicians in the school if that counts,” she said with a tone that seemed to lack her usual sarcasm, a hint of a mildly melodic tone that he hasn’t quite heard yet. “What about you, I’m sure you must have some friends. I mean you seem friendly enough,” she would have added ‘and good looking enough’ but that would require her not being in her right mind.
