“Don’t we all, were all here out of obligation, one way or another.” She replied to his remark about having to show up to the institute as often as he did.

Elric leaned back as he saw Nia start to take her seat next to him, responded to his bit about the obligations to the school with a surprising amount of maturity even if it was an obvious answer. It almost made him smile a bit as she gave him her reply to her where-abouts as far as being located at this place were concerned.

"Well that's a shame, lucky bastards in the musical clique get to see you whenever they want. As for me, I tend to shy away from folk, I mean I have one or two people in class I talk to but I usually keep to myself though I guess starting one too many fights might have something to do with that too yea?."

His tone was a tad childish though also tinged with a slight touch of envy, and who would blame him.It wasn't often you got to see a girl that was this much fun in a conversation though the definition of fun varies in that sense. He noted the new tone her voice was beginning to carry melodic tone a bit of her musical talent slipping out perhaps? Well it was something else to build a conversation with so why not.

"So, how long have you been in the choir? I'm sure you're a big hit by now if you've been at it since you got here, but I'm just guessin' really. "

As for me, I tend to shy away from folk, I mean I have one or two people in class I talk to but I usually keep to myself though I guess starting one too many fights might have something to do with that too yea?."He seemed a little bitter due to his choice of words yet he still took blame for his actions, although he seemed quite passive to her thus far.

“Whose saying others can’t? I’m not exactly bound to them you know. And if you dislike the reputation you have built, start over. Were going into a new semester, now is as good a time as any to start over.” it was perhaps the last thing he would have expected to come from her mouth, but it was the first thing to come to her mind. For what her tone lacked in sympathy it made up for in encouragement. He was beginning to see just a glimpse of the other side of her, the side that cynicism and sarcasm typically masked.

He asked about her being in chorus. “I’ve been in chorus since my freshmen year, but I have played piano longer. Due to recent events that much has gone out of the window…” her voice trailed off as another wave of bitterness enveloped her last sentence. It was one of the main things the orientation covered; basically telling her that since she cannot play piano two handed, she is now incapable of playing for the choir anymore. They are to instead find a replacement.

“Whose saying others can’t? I’m not exactly bound to them you know. And if you dislike the reputation you have built, start over. Were going into a new semester, now is as good a time as any to start over.” This was the second time Nia sounded more mature then her age, she had a point though it was the start of a new semester so why should he concern himself with how things had been in the past, and with the influx of new students from abroad he might even make some friends, hell maybe even more like his current companion.

“I’ve been in chorus since my freshmen year, but I have played piano longer. Due to recent events that much has gone out of the window…”

And with that one little string of words she threw Elric's train of thought off. Now at an almost visible loss of words Elric feared he only had two ways out of this situation. Talk about her arm and probably throw this conversation up shit creek or remain silent and let that depressing thought hang over both of them. His face now slowly beginning to show signs of light concern, he had to say something though he wasn't sure what. That's when the thought hit him and the words started to pour out.

"So, you're on track too yea? I bet you do well there too, I mean with legs like those you must be fast as hell, right?" Before he realized it Elric had started to blab about Nia's body, and as regrettable as it was in hindsight at least he found a way to change the subject hopefully without coming off as rude.

Nia wasn’t exactly sure how to respond to the comment about her legs, it was something she had never heard such a thing directed to her to say the least. She had developed the reputation of being untouchable due to having a drill sergeant for a father so boys have never attempted what they assumed to be a death sentance. But it wasn’t as if she was really looking for boys either. It wasn’t that she wasn’t interested; she had just never found one who caught her eye before.

She straightened her posture, uncrossing the very legs he must have been staring at. She fought the urge to blush with embarrassment. The last thing she needed to do was lead him on. No words needed to be spoken on her part. He talked his way into it, it is his job to talk himself out of such nonsense. She looked at him, eyes slightly narrowed and a single eyebrow raised. “So what have you to say for yourself,” her body language asked the boy in front of him.

But she quickly dropped the look and rolled her eyes before answering his question, “I can run, you are correct, but I prefer singing. I doubt I would have even joined if my parents didn’t force me into it. But I cannot say I haven’t enjoyed it at least part of the time. What about you? You must have a hobby of some sorts?”

His case of verbal overflow had really seemed to screw him over his comment about her legs regardless of how nice and shapely her legs were saying something like that this early in the game was well....not a very good way to start given Nia's reaction to it,that look was a killer to say the least. He reflexively responded to Nia's shift in posture by changing his own he slide just a few inches further from her while straightening himself out in the process it would all be one smooth movement.

“I can run, you are correct, but I prefer singing. I doubt I would have even joined if my parents didn’t force me into it. But I cannot say I haven’t enjoyed it at least part of the time. What about you? You must have a hobby of some sorts?”

It was an interesting question to say the least, aside from playing video games and watching anime in his spar time he didn't really do much. But she asked so he may as well tell her something anything even.

"Ummm aside from what I do here which is nothing, I usually just play video games and when I'm not doing that I try to work out and do punch drills I guess." He told her all he could think of save for the bit about anime, she might have thought it weird or something so best to keep those bits out.But as he mentioned the last two things on his list of hobbies he shuddered a tad almost as if merely uttering the words disturbed him, and while he did in fact enjoy doing those things the fact that his father did them too made it only worse.

She listened to his hobbies, nodding slightly while committing them to memory. Upon noting his odd displeasure upon uttering punching drills and working out, she avoided them. “Video games, eh? Personally I haven’t really played too many myself but they seem enjoyable enough.”

She wasn’t exactly sure what to say in favor to them, it wasn’t that she disliked them or anything. They were just simply something that she hasn’t encountered too many times. Her life has been pretty centered around music and athletics to ever notice that something exists beyond what she is used to. So instead of staying silent she spoke up about the workouts, although treading lightly as if on a mindfield, for all she knew she probably could have been. “And You work out too? You do more than you probably think. Do you play any sports or anything for fun outside of school?”

She hoped that her transition would be successful without touching the topic too much. His was clearly athletic in nature, he showed some definition. But she quickly stopped herself, realizing was doing the very same that Elric was just found guilty of. So instead she turned her eyes to their surroundings, blue sky, green grass, red track loop. It was odd that there was something about its simplicity that made it quite beautiful. It was all accented by distant birdsong that seemed to be coming from the school’s roof.

Someone who wasn't really into video games? That was certainly unique in this day and age, at least from Elric's point of view. Given how deep technology was ingrained into everyday life video games should be something almost everyone at least has an interest in.....though thinking about it Nia's arm probably prevents her from making some of the more precise moves required for some games, so in a way it was understandable.

“And You work out too? You do more than you probably think. Do you play any sports or anything for fun outside of school?” It was a sincere enough question so he would oblige her sincerity with some of his own.

"Uhhhh I practice boxing in my spare time I don't really do anything competitive with it, not my favorite past time but it keeps me busy and shit." He still sounded a bit bitter about talking about it but he did his best to mask it behind a light laugh, it wasn't often someone asked you about something you both loved and hated at the same time.Though in a verbal tennis match like this a bit of a weird play like that would be made, so it was time to test the waters on his end, though how to do it without being a jerk was the real issue.

"So,ummm how long have you had your, you know..." Elric spoke with as much care as he could as he just lightly pointed at Nia's prosthetic limb and just hoped he hadn't screwed this conversation straight into hell's maw.

He sounded mildly bitter, but such was understandable. It was better than him getting incredibly angry. But such might have been inevitable since this verbal tennis match kept on digging deeper and deeper into the field, eventually someone has to call a foul on the other.

It was perhaps a record for how long someone she has met had refrained from mentioning her arm. She has come to expect such to come into conversation eventually, but she wasn’t sure if she could have prepared herself for his question. He was gentle with his words but even in its passive state she was suddenly reminded of the pain and the agony of the car crash. How time moved in slow motion as glass flew everywhere. The door to her right that concaved inwards, pinning her arm.
She squinted in pain. It wasn’t physical pain, feeling went with her arm. It was the pain of remembrance.

“For far too long,” she said in a feeble voice that contrasted both the melodic and snarky tones he had heard earlier. She knew she didn’t quite answer Elric’s question but her focus was elsewhere, trapped in a far from distant memory.

Well now he'd done it with that simple half question he had demolished the conversation now the only way to fix it was with an absurdly large amount of damage control and that wasn't Elric's strong suit not in the slightest.

"Um sorry, I didn't mean to upset you..." His words were spoken meekly he knew he had messed up and he wanted to try to comfort her, but some problems can't be soothed by the words or actions of others but he'd be damned if he let her feel bad because of his slip up as far as choice of topics went.He scooted over a bit closer to Nia and just slowly pat her on the shoulder,it was a weak gesture and probably over stepping more then a few boundaries but it was all he had.

After he ceased with his tiny bit of damage control if you could call he that, the mood was down put down by the combined efforts of their conversation with little hope of becoming normal again. Elric sighed and just kind of sunk in on himself as he tried to find a way to revive the conversation and if not that atleast get the mood away from the place it was at now.

"Well at least you're still alive right? I mean you could be in a bunch of situations a lot worse yea?" These words were spoken with a similar caution though were backed by a firm reassuring tone that if everything went right would at least lift his companions spirits if only a little.

Nia nodded weakly, making no motion to deny the comfort he had offered her. She was still partially trapped in the memory but it began to fade. She hated herself for her weakness, for showing a side of her that she keeps from everyone that she knows to someone who was little more than a total stranger. She felt awkwardly comfortable around Elric, a man whom she had just met. But she told herself she couldn’t afford such weakness, if she allowed herself such moment she knew she would forever be stuck in that moment; those baleful memories of shattered glass, bones, and dreams.

She stood up a little straighter, willfully repressing the memory once more as she has been for months now. “No need to apologize,” she said in her melodic tone, although it wasn’t quite joyous either. “I am the one who should apologize.” Her voice held a dogmatic finality that nothing could shatter. She looked around her surroundings once more with a slight sense of urgency, hoping to divert the situation.

“So do you have a job or anything?” she lacked any sense of subtlety due to a sever lack of a transition that would have given most conversational whiplash.

All he could do at this point was feel bad about deciding to bring it up.Just seeing Nia somewhat trapped in her own problems faintly reminded Elric of his own problems that in comparison probably weren't as the problems faced by the girl beside him.The fragility she was now showing him only helped to drive that feeling of wanting to help her further into his brain, but as much as he wanted to help he could do very little outside of comforting words, he was unable to do more out of fear of personal boundaries.

All he could do was nod slightly as she told him it wasn't his fault and that he shouldn't feel sorry. He wouldn't say anything to disagree just continue to nod in silent agreement, but at least she didn't sound as down as she did a few moments ago so he could be happy with that.

“So do you have a job or anything?” The question blind sided Elric and had him a bit confused for the few moments he took to actually register the question. A job? Yea he had one.

"Yep, I work at Flynn's, local arcade in downtown Rockport, it's a cool place but I hardly see anyone I know from school up there. But hey who knows maybe I'll see a familiar face or two in the future yea?" His tone was upbeat and almost teasing as if he was telling her subtly to drop by the arcade if she could, oh it was an easy to see through ploy but maybe the joke would help to ease the mood a bit.

She nodded as she listened to his words. It seemed as if their conversation has reverted back to it original upbeat pace and snarky undertones. “I recognize the name of the place, but I have never actually been there myself.” Her tone held a tinge of curiosity, as if the arcade would grant her a glimpse into Elric’s psyche.

She looked at the boy, finally realizing how close they were due to the moment she had lost her composure. Although she tried to remain aplomb, her body unconsciously her body grew a little tenser, but she made no motion to act upon her nervousness. She instead continued the conversation, “If by any odd circumstances that are beyond my grasp I somehow manage to make my way down to the arcade, would you be there as well?” Her tone was sarcastic yet melodic as a mischievous grin formed at the corners of her lips.

She would never have guessed that their meeting would have ended like this. She wasn’t sure where exactly it happened, but somewhere between bumping into one another and now, something had most definitely changed. She was unsure just where exactly this all will take her, but she as intent on finding out more about this intriguing boy she had met.

Elric let out an audible sigh as Nia's tone drifted back to normal, it wouldn't have been an understatement to say he was relieved she hadn't gotten volatile.

He smiled a bit as Nia mentioned she knew about the arcade, though hadn't actually been there."Well explains why I've never seen you around town, but then again I never see any of the pretty ones around town." His tone was teasing and more on the happy side of things which would explain that downplayed compliment. It was then he realized just how close he had actually gotten to her and in truth she was worthy of the compliment though the lack of distance between them was putting the boy on edge slightly.

“If by any odd circumstances that are beyond my grasp I somehow manage to make my way down to the arcade, would you be there as well?” Elric noticed her smile and was almost positive she was hitting on him in some way he just didn't get, in a bit of a nervous panic he quickly turned his head from facing her and took a few deep breaths before actually answering her question.

"Well, it depends BUT if you showed up about Tuesday at maybe lets say five o'clock I think I'd be there, waitin on a pretty young thing to show up~." His nervousness at the situation would be only slightly apparent but still there non the less he kind of sorta asked a girl out while being really really vague, and that was an a little victory in itself yea?

She heard his gentle teasing tone when he called her pretty a pretty young thing. For some reason she suddenly had the song by that very name stuck in her head. Though she refused to show it she couldn’t help but find herself getting sucked in. “Mhmmmmmm,” she said in a tone that said disbelief, but the smile threading to form at the corners said otherwise. His way with words, or lack thereof perhaps, seemed to suit him better than he assumed. “Five o’ clock it is then,” she said breaking the subtlety of their teasing as a way to cement the time in both their schedules.

She felt her phone vibrate in her jean’s pocket. She pulled it out, an old thing with a short battery life. She received a text message, she flipped it open and it was her mother.

What’s taking you so long? You said you would have been home by now. the message said, you could almost hear the concern in the text. She checked the time, realizing she was an hour late. They had most definitely lost track of time.

She got to her feet. “I’m sorry, I have to go. I’ll see you at the arcade.”

She walked away, refusing to turn around and look back. In a half jog/ half sprint, she rushed home knowing that she will have hell to pay.

And it seemed Nia was all for meeting him at the arcade at a later date, and all in all this day was a lot better then it probably should have been.He lost about of the tension the nervousness the situation had pretty much forced on him.

"Ok well I'll be waitin' on ya then."

Elric let his words hang for a moment before he heard the faint buzzing of a cell phone, Nia had received a text.Elric watched as she pulled out what could only be called a relic from another time a time when things weren't sleek and took up more space then they should. He would have laughed a bit if he wasn't trying to seem at least someone decent in front of Nia.

“I’m sorry, I have to go. I’ll see you at the arcade.”

It was a bit of a downer but the sun had already gotten high in the sky it was almost about one or two or sometime in that general area, they really let time get away from them it seemed. As Nia got up and began to head back to where ever she had to go, Elric couldn't help but think a funny thought about his father even though it irked him all the same.

"Just as good coming as she is going..."

The words slowly floated out of him as he watched Nia go on her way.

"....is about what I'd expect his big ass to tell me....he wouldn't be wrong either." A light smile forced his way onto his face as he just looked up towards the sky and pulled out his own phone and called his grandfather.

"Hey yo G what's for dinner today? I'll be home after I stop by the job for a few hours.........Hmmm ok steak it is well I'll see ya when I get home then, peace." With that he ended the call and put his phone away as he stood up, he had a ten and not a whole lot of time to waste it on tokens!
