School visit day proved to be a calm, warm august-day showing the seasons best side. On the large school grounds of Ravencroft Institute students, parents and siblings filled every nook and Lian had found she could not take a corner without meeting some "friendly" upperclassman that asked her if he could be of help. No, she thought, no I don´t need help. I need you all to go away. Leave me be, let me wander by myself. The masses were suffocating her senses, the shrill laughter, the whole aura of anticipation and boredness was pressuring her mind with the force of a sledgehammer. Her mood was increasingly sinking and she shakily tied to maintain her smile as the small chinese girl wove through the people skillfully, avoiding eye and body contact as best as possible. Her heartbeat was clearly aduible in her own ears; her stomach was churning and an approaching headache clouded her friendly face with a frown. "No. I have to get out of here." she suddenly said to herself, stopping short in her tracks. Where had she been going? Why was she even here in the first place? There was no need to get to know her school just yet when she was going to attend it everyday for at least 4 years now. Ignoring the protest at her interruption of the flow and trying to calm down, Lian looked around the campus, skimming over nameless faces and meaningless buildings. She felt tears prick at the corner of her eyes as she felt utterly lost and alone amidst all of those humans that seemed to work like a clock. Before the water could fall, she caught a certain sensation. Out of sheer sixth sense, she turned around in a small flourish and her eyes fell on a distant pach of green that was not polluted with activity yet. A sigh of relief escaped her lips and the girl quickly made her way over there. Just a single moment, just a little peace and quiet, she prayed... And the fae had led her well. As soon as she stepped into the shade of a big tree, she felt her edginess fall from her and her lungs finally filld with air again. Almost like a magical bubble, a place just for herself, it was filled with the quiet she had longed for all day. Noone else seemed to want to sit under the tree, and that was completely alright by Lian. She let the small breeze wash over her closed eyes as she listened to the rustle of the leaves, imagining that they were saying charms to keep her safe... With a smile, she opened her eyes again to properly thank the tree for its magic - but her mouth fell open in childlike, naive surprise and happiness. It was a late cherry tree! It still had some cherries! Pulled out of her daze Lian quickly threw down her bag into the soft grass and rounded the tree to try and find a good place to start climbing. it was an old, big tree, with high branches and not all of them still bore fruit. There was one low branch that she could almost pick the ripe, dark red fruits from, but her small stature didn´t allow it, no matter how hard she stretched. She could barely touch the cherry with her fingertips, and so she let her arms fall down in frustration as she looked up into the wonderful but distant temptation out of her reach. "That´s mean!" she mumbled under her breath. |

``...And I'd be much delighted if you would attend, Gravesworth. Our families would make a powerful alliance for the future. It is important after all, to secure our legacies.´´ A bashful chuckle. A faint smile. Eyebrows slightly raised. All the components for humbleness and naiveté without falling into artificiality. All according to a dance of words and gestures he had grown very accustomed to. The other youth, about his same age, looked at him without any effort to hide his excitement. Properly speaking, it was like giving him direct control over the conversation. It was such a basic thing...never let the other one know what you're thinking... "Yes Malcovich, I'd be delighted to meet with your family. I can't thank you enough for this oportunity." His emerald hues were somewhat hidden by his half closed eyelids. His eyelashes and the paleness of his skin exalted his eye color. His raven black hair, so graciously curved at its ends and yet perfectly aimed to the side in bangs made the contrast almost hypnotic to look at. And its effect showed perfectly on the way the other boy seemed a bit overwhelmed by them, yet couldn't take his eyes off of him. ``No, it's f-fine. Well then, see you there!´´ He hurriedly waved goodbye and ran to whatever excuse of a social life he had. A thin row of white teeth formed into a calm smile that looked gentle and predatory. What a sad thing, really. To believe that alliances and status would count for something else than to further the speed of his eventual fall. Everything that rises, falls. For them who were considered at the top, this truth was inexorably certain. Kayne Gravesworth turned around and walked through the pristine hallway of the fourth floor. He needn't check if his presence drew eyes: He could hear the whispers that followed his wake. A glance, a smile. A wave of a hand. A teacher came to wish him a good year. Reciprocate. 'I'm honored' he would say. 'You have a great future' the man would respond. The waltz continued and soon, he found himself near the gardens. The influx of parents, students and potential transfers served to camouflage him well. They would just notice a tall, lean and beautiful young man standing there with a smile on his lips. Like cattle, the mass moved uniformly and continuously. That is, except for a girl. At first, he saw her from a distance as he walked towards a deserted part of the garden. Petite, young, short black hair. Unremarkable. Yet, she was the only person who seemed to notice the horrible air of mediocrity and cattle that the mass exhuded. He smiled to himself. Soon, she'd realize that by leaving she left the only sense of structure and belonging that all humans needed. Why there she was walking towards... The cherry tree? Ah, fruit. Now that he was closer he could see the red cherries that almost everyone else failed to notice. How absurd and pointless. She could buy a bag full of those in a supermarket. She was trying to climb the tree. She realized her size was insufficient. Pointless indeed. Yet he found himself walking towards her. And without a shred of doubt, he easily picked the cherry from the tree. It was much easier for him anyway, he was taller. The red fruit laid on his open palm. "You have a good eye. Nobody else seemed to notice them." Another of his smiles, though this one was by far more tantalizing. If one looked closely, a hint of his canines could be seen without making him look any less gentle. The green and bright patch of green they were standing in seemed to become divided. On one side, all of the light and bright colors surrounded the girl. On the other, nature seemed to lose its color and the air felt a bit more oppresive, almost dead. But the sweet perfume of a smile would make one think it was just the presence of a beautiful person affecting the senses. He extended the cherry to her. Milennia ago, a snake did a similar gesture with another fruit. "Go on. It's what you wished for, wasn't it?" |

Lian was biting her lower lip in contemplation on how to solve this problem – she really wanted a cherry now! - when her personal little magic garden was interrupted, no invaded rather smoothly. Astonished, Lian watched the gracious movements of a young man, easily reaching up and plucking the little red fruit from its branch. He gave her a smile and complimented her, holding out his hand to her. Her dark eyes widened and she slowly blinked at this gesture. Lian should be delighted, she should be overwhelmed by joy and gratitude of this simple act of kindness from a stranger. She should be thanking him and happily taking the cherry from him. But then why was she hesitating? His school uniform was neat, without a single crinkle or stain. His posture was relaxed, but upright, a certain sense of dignity lay in his shoulders. His shiny black hair was combed into a business cut and his smile was charming, showing nothing but chivalry. Whoever this was, he was the personification of a perfect gentleman. He was too perfect. Lian was intrigued but on her guard at the same time. Something told her there was more to him than what it looked like. Suddenly Lian felt mocked by those hypnotising green eyes and she realized she had been staring. Pushing her stupid, misplaced mistrust to the side she looked up at him and gave a short bow. She could only hope the other would take the slight doubt in her eyes as normal reservedness for someone you didn´t know. “Thank you, sir. That is very kind.”, she smiled genuinely but never let her eyes leave the other. It felt to her as though he was watching her, analysing her, and it was better to keep her attention on him. Slowly, she let her gaze fall down to the two berries connected at the top – Oh come on girl, get your act together! What are you so anxious of? Angry at herself, she shook her head a little, closed the seemingly huge gap between them and ignored the sudden chills running down her spine, as if she had stepped into a deeper shade. She reached out to take the fruits and plucked them apart. One cherry was cradled in the small hands now. The second cherry fell back into the young mans hand as the smaller girl retreated a little from within his personal space. Feeling the need to explain, Lian cleared her throat and added: “For your effort, you should have one, too.” Somehow, this situation, harmless as it may seem, was putting strain on her social skills again. She felt her stomach twist a little, yearning for the berry and for a quieter surrounding. But Lian felt trapped under this tree, since the outside world was still moving at its never ending pace and even if she had to share the magic bubble with someone unsettling like this, she decided to enjoy the moment nonetheless. Finally, the deep black eyes fell back to the small berry she carefully held. A silent moment passed and she just gazed at it with gentle look on her face. It was a little miracle, finding such a treasure this late in summer. She wanted to savour it and give it the right amount of admiration it deserved. A smile tugged at her lips, but it was a kind of wistful smile. “I´m sorry, it´s not that I´m not grateful to you.” her soft voice spoke quietly, a thoughtful tone in it. “It´s just... now that I have it, I fear it won´t taste as sweet as I imagined it.” She laughed a little and shook her head. “That would somehow ruin the moment! It´s silly, I know...” Suddenly Lian felt defensive, realizing she had made a stupid remark. Her 'fairy-speech' had not escaped her yet, but such a weird position would still very possibly drive away the first person that seemed to really take an interest in her that went deeper than 'Oh, look, a new student'. She hunched her shoulders a little and lowered her head, letting her bangs shade her face, trying to brace for his hurried apology and retreat. |

In that small patch of nature, seemingly isolated from the world, two people stood. A young asian girl, demure and short haired. She had offered her partner a cherry. A tall, older boy. A glint of something like malice and charm on his eyes. An observer would've thought that the senior was teasing a poor first year with his overwhelming presence. But how much truth was in that thought? Moreover, instead of stammering and blabbering like many other young girls would've in her position, she mustered enough presence of mind to turn the tables on him. Before she had offered him the red cherry, he seemed amused with her reactions, though very subtly because if anything, his expression hadn't changed. It never seemed to do so. But then those sharp emerald hues widened in slight surprise and confusion when she offered him the fruit. How silly. How pointless. Did she think he wouldn't be able to have hundreds of those at the spot should he simply open his mouth and wish it so? Was she somehow mocking him? What was this? Why would she offer him something so crude and common in thanks? Why was she even thanking him for it? She was supposed to be startled and crumble. That's how things worked. His smile widened slightly. His canines somehow became a bit more visible in this charming and dangerous smile when she explained her actions. "You value the pursuit higher than the completion of a goal?" Without a single shred of doubt and without breaking eye contact, his thin lips parted slightly as he gently placed the cherry on the opening and pushed it inside his mouth with his index and middle finger. He looked down at her -she was shorter, the age difference was clear- and chewed the sweet fruit slowly and swallowed. "It is very silly, yes. This cherry was sweet just like any other. And you know this, don't you? It's not being let down what you fear. It's the prospect that your prize won't satisfy you." Something in the vaguely suggestive wording and his gaze made the speech all the more cryptic. He brushed his index and middle finger with a flick of his tongue and cleaned his fingers with a silk hankerchief from his front pocket. "Though I am your senior, there's no need to adress me so formally when we're alone. I'm Kayne Gravesworth." When he had said 'when we're alone', he seemed to take his time savoring every letter of the words. And he reciprocated her short bow with one of his own. |

The tension melted away as Lian noticed the boys reaction and got confused herself. Why did he look... surprised? That was a completely normal thing to do, right? A slight frown shadowed her brows as she cocked her head to the side to watch him from a different angle. Well, he recovered quickly from it and didn´t seem to dwell on it, so Lian let it go and chose to ponder his answer instead. Her doubts were fading to the back of her mind, being replaced by interest in the developing conversation. She was intrigued, he seemed to have a very different view on life than her, and despite her feelings of uneasiness, this was the most worthwhile experience she had had today. Playing around with the leaf on the stem of her cherry, she absentmindedly looked over his shoulder. Goals... She didn´t have many. It was only natural for her to enjoy whatever she did, otherwise she would despair at her lack of direction in life. Hesitatingly, she began to speak, trying to form her thoughts into comprehensible sentences. “Well, if your goal is the only thing you work for, what do you do once you achieve it?”, she countered his question with another question. “If it´s the sole content of your life, isn´t life after achieving it empty? So you have to value the road to your goal just as much, because otherwise pursuit becomes meaningless.” The girl closed with a smile. That pretty much summed it up. Life would be boring if you were running for a goal without looking left and right. Then she shrugged and looked at the goal she had been aiming for. “Apart from that a goal achieved without working for it is rather pointless...” She wished she had been able to pick the cherry herself. She felt bad that someone else had had to come and help her. Biting her lower lip again, she looked up to offer a proper thanks. What she saw made her cheeks flare. Wh-what was he doing? Lian stared in bewilderment at the dark red fruit contrasting the pale lips, couldn´t look away and felt awkward for even perceiving this simple action the way she did now. He was just eating a cherry, heavens! She was about to break eye contact to try and regain her composure, as he finished off the performance by very suggestive words and a gesture that should be forbidden to use in public. Her mouth gaped open lightly in shock and indignation. His stare seemed to burn her from the inside – not from pleasure you pervs! This girl realized how he was fully aware of what he was doing. That had been on purpose. First lowering her guard with a personal question and then... THAT. Lian was deeply humiliated and ashamed. And angry. How could she have fallen for a simple trick and made a fool out of herself so easily? Her eyes narrowed dangerously and she plastered a smile back on her face. It was not hard to project her anger at him. Such indecency in public! Laying a trap for her like that! And she could not possibly call him out on it without admitting to her thoughts. It would not surprise her if he feigned innocence then. And just by her reaction, he probably got what he wanted, she had 'satisfied' his intention – just the thought of that made her silently grind her teeth. Well, she decided. Two could play this game. She just had to forget for a moment that this was reality and not a book... “Satisfaction”, she carefully spelled out the word, looking at him with her dark eyes intently, “Is Stagnation. Once I have what I wanted, what is there more to gain? One small fruit can not sate my hunger, but it fills me with sweet anticipation to make the next cherry even more... desirable.” Her faint accent peaked at the last word, giving it a foreign sound. She couldn´t help but push forward her chin slightly, looking up at him with defiance, rather than in a submissive, seductive glance that seemed more appropriate for her words. The young girl felt rather foolish for her reaction already, but she willed the heat in her cheeks away and told herself to stand strong and tried to ignore the nervous beating of her heart. “And my insignificant name is Lian Fei.”, she said with an odd mix of tense, chinese politeness and subdued riot, still staring down- err, up the other guy. Cain Gravesworth? What a dark name... Lian remembered vaguely about the name Gravesworth – a rich business man with a single son, right? If this was him... Anxiety rose in her again as she realized she had possibly made a mistake. She kept her face straight but her stomach churned harder and she smoothly tried to find back to her polite self. “I will be starting High School this year. It is a pleasure meeting you, Gravesworth-shi.”, she almost shrunk from her rebellious stance to her former posture: Back straight, head slightly lowered but eyes on the other and arms loosely in front of her, still dangling the cherry between her hands, turning it around now in an edgy gesture. |

``A goal achieved without working for it is rather pointless.´´ A goal achieved withuot working for it. Pointless. "Father?" "Yes, Kayne?" "Are we better than the commoners?" "Now, where'd you hear that word?" The boy shuffled slightly and seemed dubitative. "The children at school. They call the others 'commoners'." The dark-haired man scooted over closer to the child. The room was dark and the last rays of light came from a dim lamp at young Kayne's bedside. His father put his hand on his forehead to check his temperature again. He messed up Kayne's hair a bit, and the kid protested with a groan. "Well Kayne, they're used to treating people that way. They don't know any better, they think everything comes easy. So they can't understand someone who works hard to get what they want." The child's green eyes looked somewhat confused. "But...I don't understand it either." His gaze became noticeably sharper and more focused on the girl. Before, he was simply amused. Now he was interested. He couldn't supress a small grin when the girl counterattacked with her own way of being suggestive. It only succeeded in being cute and somewhat clumsy in his eyes. But to think she would retaliate. This girl was becoming more and more entertaining in her transparent attempt to hide her embarrassment. "No self depreciation now, you're not insignificant. And apologies for the innapropiate wording. It's a bad habit bred from keeping cynical company at all times." And then, it happened. If any fairy tale had ever been given one iconic scene, it had been that of the prince meeting the princess. It was a beautiful scene, engraved in the collective memory of mankind. A beautiful concept made romantic gesture. His knee rested on the ground. His body was slightly inclined towards her. His hair obscured his eyes and it was better that way, because visual contact right now would've inevitably been overwhelming. A small but knowing smile. Her small and delicate hand was resting on his palm when his laid his lips on it. "At least, let me start behaving like I should've right now. Rather, would you agree to rendezvous here at the Gala night? It's improper of me to ask but I can't help and wonder if somehow I'd be able to entertain you in compensation for my cheeky behaviour." And that marked the moment when his eyes locked with hers again in their full trance-inducing gaze. Rather, it was him who tried to penetrate into her mind and unravel just what laid behind the membrane of her thoughts. Why was he doing this for an unremarkable commoner? Why, amusement clearly. |

Lian was growing more anxious by the second. She suddenly didn´t want to be here -alone- with Kayne Gravesworth anymore. She noticed the way his gaze changed and she felt being preyed upon. She answered him calmly, glad to dismiss the topic and a little bit for his apology too. “It is considered rude to speak of oneself in a high regard where I come from. -Wha-?” His sudden, but fluid movement caught her off-guard, and before she could figure out what he wanted to do and react appropriately (pull up her arms to block a punch, duck away and run, she had experience), the perfect gentleman had trapped her yet again, in a fairytale like pose, holding her free hand and kneeling. Lian frowned at this new position and his smooth words. Behave like he should´ve? He talked like she was some kind of lady! She appreciated the apology, but this was such a stark contrast to his former behaviour that she couldn´t help but be on her guard again. First, he helped her out, then proceeded to mock her and embarass her, now to switch back to sweettalk? Apart from that, a Senior didn´t invite a Freshman they had just met like that. This whole move was highly odd and didn´t seem to follow any logic. Carefully, but firmly, she retracted her hand. That was a little too personal for her tastes. Thoughtfully she looked at his perfect, enchanting face and those oh-so-green eyes that probably were the dreams of many a young maiden. He was playing with her. Lian felt her irritation boil up again, but this time it was more tame and fueled by intrigue. They had exchanged maybe two sentences! So... “Why are you trying to charm me?”, she asked him in a direct approach. Her eyes were locked on his, but not in awe that he had tried to incite, but in curiosity and doubt. She didn´t take his act for anything more than that. “You don´t really want to make up for what you did. And you take no romantic interest in me either. So why do you invite me to a date, someone you just now met, whom you know nothing about?” The girl was sure of her deduction, but couldn´t quite put her finger on what was so heavily wrong with this boy. She decided to stay wary of him and felt stronger through this resolve. Taking a small step out of his reach, she crossed her arms lightly over her chest. And risked another comment. “Or do you secretly wish to suck my blood, Count Gravesworth?”, she joked with a light-hearted chuckle. Kaynes complexion had reminded her of this creature of the night before, but now his whole old-fashioned, smooth attitude just completed the image of the charismatic nobleman that allured young women in the night... No, suddenly she couldn´t take him serious anymore and had to bite her lower lip in the futile attempt to get the image of him in a black coat and with fangs out of her head. Her eyes shone with mirth, but she was not grinning. Not really. |

He let the girl retract her hand from his. His eyebrow raised as if expecting an explanation. The small, fragile-looking asian girl displayed some courage when she called out his actions. Rather, she didn't quite see through him but could at least discern a hidden motive. He noticed he was actually smiling when she numbered, one by one, the flaws in a behavior that many girls fell for. ''Or do you secretly wish to suck my blood, Count Gravesworh?'' His expression changed from amusement to something akin curt interest. He narrowed his eyes and looked at her with an intensity that almost electrified the air around him. "Nobody's ever talked to me like that." He stood up and once again their difference in height was made evidential. "Nobody but my father would dare talk to me like that." A hint of his canines and then... His laughter. It was a carefree, almost unfitting laughter for him. He hugged his sides as he laughed without a care, it was something so rare and alien to see in him that one would've sworn he had gone insane. But no, if anything he was enjoying an almost impossible mix of bewilderment and happiness. She could understand him. Maybe she wasn't like the others. She didn't care about his status, name or power. To her, he could've very well been just another idiot in a crowd. And that thought intrigued him to no end. His laugh died out after some seconds and he regained his breath with a pleased smile. It wasn't like his other easy and practiced smiles. This one had a certain feeling of being raw and untrained because it looked so unelegant. "You're a very unusual girl aren't you? Yes, I admit to playing with you a bit. No, I am not sorry for it. Because had I not done that, you wouldn't have reacted in such a clever way. And that..." He lowered his voice. His eyes became sharper. "That I actually do like, First Year Lian Fei." The world around them seemed unchanged but suddenly visible and clear. The scene wasn't as fantastic and isolated but it was that much more colorful. "You've gotten yourself into quite a pinch though. Your mind interests me. And now I truly wish to see you again. So for the second time: Would you agree to meet me at the Gala?" |

The boy was towering over her again and she immediately felt less brave. Somehow, she wanted to drag him down to her level, so that he couldn´t look down on her like that. Lian tensed up again at the words Kayne spoke. Had... she made him angry? Her stance shrunk a little on that thought, but something in his tone... it sounded less like anger and more like disbelief. The way he smiled made her reconsider the statement about vampires again. And then - Kaynes outburst came as a total surprise. Lians eyes widened and her mouth dropped open a little. The boy that had been sleek as a snake before was almost crying in laughter! The girl cocked her head to the side and watched him until he was done. It was an akwward experience, his breath was raspy and he had a crazy look in his eyes. Lian wondered a little and voiced what came to her mind. "You don´t do that often, do you Gravesworth-shi? Laughing, I mean." What a sad thought. To be so inexperienced in something so wonderful like laughing. The new kind of smile he gave her then made her smile back without even noticing. He found her unusual? That... was a nice compliment. She hadn´t really forgiven him for the playing, but she had the feeling he didn´t care for that. So she just took the comment with a shrug and a small, flattered smile. She felt much more comfortable with this Kayne. She wondered how long he could keep it up, being the way he was now? With a small sigh, she took the opportunity to pick up her bag that was still lying on the floor. Absentmindedly she pushed one of her books on mythology back inside and pondered this new development. He was definitely not a boring guy. And though it had seemed that he enjoyed her discomfort, something urged her to not judge him yet. And her natural curiousity did the rest. Finally, she looked at Kayne and cheekily did a curtsy. "I would be honored, Count. Under two conditions though." Noone said she had to trust him, right? There was one thing bothering her at this point: "Tell me why you wanted to charm me. And don´t do it again." The girls face was serious. Something like this, she could not comprehend, and she didn´t like to be perceived as dumb enough to fall for it. |

He let out a low 'hmmm' when she said he wasn't used to laughing. "I can laugh just fine. Wether to please someone or flatter, I can easily laugh. No, the difference is wether I actually enjoy myself when I do. Rather rude of you to say such a thing, isn't it?" She smiled at what he could only imagine was something she felt flattered for. He wanted to keep teasing her but right now it would prove unwise to put her back on a defensive stance. No, what he wanted was to figure out how her mind worked. The reason she of all people, someone unremarkable and whom he had never met before, was able to reject the beautiful lie that was his act. She accepted his invitation but not before laying some ground rules. She demanded an explanation. Demanded. How amusing, someone outirght telling him what to do. It wasn't an unplesant thing right now. He would allow it. "I didn't want to charm you. As you may have noticed, there's nothing for me to gain from seducing you. What I wanted was to see your reaction. It amused me, pure and simple. Had it been any other woman, it would've been boring. But you're unusual. So I wanted to see your take on this. I must admit I'm rather satisfied with the result." He nonchalantly spoke about his game like he was giving her the weather forecast. There wasn't arrogance, nor malice in his voice and demeanour. There wasn't even insanity. He just said such a strange thing with a straight face and managed to make it just slightly unnerving. "Having said that, I won't take the same approach again. Only an idiot sees something fail and keeps trying the same thing. No, next time we meet I'll have a different game for us in mind. I hope you perform as excellently as you did today." The underlying message was clear: I don't think you're dumb. I know you don't trust me. I plan to have fun with this. I want to keep seeing you. You're special. He glanced around and noticed that at some point, the crowd had all but dissapeared. The sun was setting. "You're vexing. When you walked with the crowd, you looked as if the very concept of interaction was repulsive to you. You seemed to desire being invisible and unnoticeable. But then you separated yourself from them and did something so pointless and crude I can't begin to understand it. Why would you? You could've bought cherries if you so desired. Why?" His eyes were looking down as he rubbed his chin with his index and thumb. It wasn't a question to her, he seemed to be talking to himself or thinking out loud. "To think that I would become interested in such things. I'm clearly becoming insane." And something about the way he said it echoed ironic. |

Lian shook her head in response to his explanation. “A real laugh is one you don´t even notice because you´re so busy with feeling good.” But calling her rude hurt a bit. Yes, maybe that had not been the wisest move... In fact, she felt drained a little at this point. It had only been a matter of time before she did something wrong. In silent defeat she lowered her head and rubbed her eyes. It was getting late too, so she should hurry along to look for her homeroom – oh right! That was why she had come today! But first, she listened to Kayne laying out his motives, and she nodded. While somehow irritating, the concept of a test made sense in this situation. A small frown formed on her brows, she was not exactly sure if she liked being a test subject. But the interest in those completely different persons seemed mutual, so she was not going to complain. And she had to admit... “I like games.”, a slow smile spread on her face, a different one from the polite, cheery smile she usually wore. This was the smile of a challenger. She wanted to prove herself. An interesting turn of events, as she normally tried to sink in with the crowd and not get noticed – just like he had deduced. But it seemed this meeting brought about many hidden aspects. Lian couldn´t help but feel that something else was behind this happening. Carefully, she caressed the small fruit she still held in her hand. A firm but soft surface, tarnished only by a few dents she had made with her fingernails. What wasn´t there to understand? He deserved an answer, since she had demanded one too. “It was the magic of the moment. Yes, if I wanted to eat cherries, I could just go and buy them. But I didn´t even want any. They happened to be here, and as you have noticed, I was feeling a little down. So... they made me happy, and I wanted to have one in that exact moment because I felt they were mine – noone else saw such a wonderful thing, I had found them and they were my 'prize'.” Enjoying the cooler evening breeze that started to pick up, Lian craned her neck to look into the dark crown that would soon turn into golden red glory. The leaves were rustling again, lightly like whispers and secrets. It was magical, that was for sure. “This tree at this time with this single cherry you picked for me is more precious to me than a full bowl of the finest cherries from europe.” She said this with a soft, withdrawn look on her face and a smile barely tugging at her lips. It was a nice moment. Somehow it didn´t matter anymore that she had becom angry and scared earlier. The people were leaving in small groups now and it was in general quieter than when they had started talking. Her magical bubble seemed to be expanding as the school grew peaceful. “My apologies, but I need to leave now.”, she made a small bow towards Kayne. “I have to find my Homeroom, that´s what I came for originally.” A small of doubt lingered when she looked up at him. The Gala. What might happen there? What kind of game was he planning? “I am looking forward to - ...the Gala.” For a moment she had wanted to say 'meeting you again', but that sounded awfully personal. She´d rather keep the distance a little. With that, she turned around to leave. |

He watched her walk away. He didn't give her any parting words but simply kept looking as she dissapeared into the building. "Nonsense." The tree had been ignored because it was but a decoration. It just so happened to grow cherries and her prize was nothing but a leftover from a better harvest others had already taken advantage of. There was no predetermined event, no magic in it.It was pure and simple coincidence, timing and desire to relieve her stress. Nothing more, nothing less. Yet she seemed so happy, but not like any of the idiots walking around the school. Why, if she was so smart and different, would she believe in something like predetermined events, fate, destiny? It reeked with irrationality. He ran a hand through his black hair and rearranged it into its flawless array. A green pair of eyes glanced back at the tree and saw that regardless of her observation, she had missed one last, lonely cherry. He raised his hand though he wondered why, and picked it with his index and thumb. He looked at the red, juciy fruit. His eyes flashed with a sudden burst of emotion for the shortest instant. "Such nonsense." The cherry was crushed between his fingers and fell to the grass, ruined and wasted. Kayne Gravesworth walked away but not before giving the fruit he had reaped and discarded one last look. Something like doubt glinted on his eyes. -END THREAD- |

The doors to the High School building opened without a sound, and a short girl walked in, still deep in contemplation about her newest acquaintance. If someone were to watch her, they would see her stop after a few steps away from the entrance, look around for possible spectators, and then place the small red fruit between her lips. She plucked off the stem and bit down onto the cherry. "... I should have known." Lian mumbled to herself as she chewed. The rich sour taste was not the sweetness she had expected, but it tasted good none the less. She smiled a little and felt glad he wasn´t there to watch her reveal his lie. He probably wouldn´t understand why she was happy regardless. [Exit Thread] |
