"I'm not sure of this. It was hard for me to speak to just one person. I had to make an excuse to leave."

"It's not as though you were lying to him. You were busy. It was polite to say so instead of the alternative."

"True, but this is completely different."

"You have to start somewhere, Anri. And besides, Hakuro will be there. So will I. You're among friends."

"Friends... Yes, you two have done a great deal for me. Let's go, then."

Two people had stepped into the area. One was Anri Fuyunaito, the girl with glasses and black hair, seen as rather quiet and with a stern gaze. She was in normal clothing, generally clad in a short dress of light blue, darker blue, and white. She had the air of scrutiny over her surroundings and the people. She also had a book with her. One student in particular - if he was around - might find it amusing to know that it was Joseph Heller's Catcn-22. Showing her in was a young man who was some years her senior with brown hair and a nice dark suit on. He was smiling and had sort of a watchful gaze, possibly keeping an eye out for trouble. After saying something to Anri, he departed from her immediate company and began to 'float' about the place. His purpose was not entirely known and not important at this time.

Anri looked around the place, not sure where to begin. She was...a fighter and not much of a socializer. She undderstood Shiro's desire to get her back in the world, but she thought that this was maybe...too much too quickly.

Brendan was mostly just lounging around, when he saw two people enter. They looked new, or at least the girl did, judging from the way she inspected around as she did. But who was he to talk? He didn't know anyone here yet either, after all. He felt like an outcast and to be quite honest, it kind of sucked. Nevertheless, it at least had a better environment than most places, so that was good.

But if this girl's new, too... then what if this was a golden opportunity to make a friend? He felt awkward at starting conversations, especially with girls, and wasn't a smooth talker by any stretch of the imagination, but... hell, if he could handle a fight or two, why was this so scary?

He sucked in his breath, released, and then got out of his sitting position, going over to the girl.

"Hey, there!" he said in a cheerful tone, trying to put on the best smile he could manage. It wasn't working out the best.

A little lost in her own thoughts, having a look around the place while...unfortunately having forgotten to make a circuit of this area like she had town, Anri was both sort of wary and not. It's a bit hard to explain. She was paying more attention to what she was seeing, and not - for instance - her flanks. Therefore, when you get someone out of the blue talking to you most unexpectedly...things happen.

"Hey, there!"

In this case, she turned very swiftly, her hands and feet already moving to take a stance that would be ideal to launch punches and kicks at a moment's notice. Anri was disciplined to be able to fight, and catching her off-guard sometimes made her default into protecting herself from threats. She didn't know...friendly people, or anyone who would just walk up in ssuch a manner, save perhaps one...and this was not him. However, about a second after she had done this, the girl realized that this was the wrong choice of actions and reverted to standing normally again.

"Apologies... I don't like being snuck up on."

Attacking girls usually wasn't his thing, so when the girl took up a stance of sorts, he merely backed up a step or two in caution, trying to look as harmless as possible with his hands in the air. He was soon after informed that she didn't like being snuck up on, and ceased her offensive motions. Brendan, in response, also lowered his arms.

"Umm... huh?"

He was kind of confused. Not even he reacted to possible danger in as eager a manner as this girl. More of him forcing such reactions back in those times, but still. Clearly she was well trained.

"Ah. I mean... I didn't come to hurt you or anything. You just looked lost. You new here, or somethin'?"

He smiled again with that question asked. Sure it was an odd start, but he was an odd guy, at least in some ways, so it worked for him.

"Umm... huh? Ah. I mean... I didn't come to hurt you or anything. You just looked lost. You new here, or somethin'?"

She nodded at him. Yes, we know that Brendan didn't mean any harm, and for that reason he was spared being attacked by what must be regarded as a fellow combatant for whatever reason. However, he wouldn't know the way Anri thinks, the way she has been thinking for quite some time now. For one, talking to people? Not good at it.

"Very new, and very lost. I don't know this school yet, or most anyone here. It's problematic."

Point of order: He appearance, poise, and accent clearly gave away her Japanese origins, which meant she was a long way from home. This place was to be a fresh start for her, though it would perhaps be a little rough in transition. However, her english was therefore very good, which means she'd studied hard. Why, though, did she have to default to ass-kicking mode just then?

"Ah, I see."

With that, he scratched the back of his head. He wasn't good at conversations much, and this girl didn't seem much the talkative type either. Mayhaps he should just stop trying...? No, that wasn't an option. He wanted to get better at the socializing thing, after all!

"You know..." he started, trying to find the right words.

"I'm new here, myself. I don't exactly know anyone either. I guess you could say I'm in the same boat as you right now, huh?"

He let out a small chuckle after that, hoping he could at least make a decent first impression and not appear too clingy. He heard bad horror stories about clingy people and their downfalls...

He seemed to understand well enough, and it didn't appear to freak him out that she would react in such a way, but iut must have been at least a little confusing. That much, she was certain of. Nothing she could do about that now, and at least no real harm was done. It would be unforgiveable to attack someone for no reason. Curious, her reaction, then. Did she expect to be attacked herself? She wasn't sure... Even still, the boy didn't seem to know what to say for a moment.

"You know... I'm new here, myself. I don't exactly know anyone either. I guess you could say I'm in the same boat as you right now, huh?"

"Yes, I would, for the most part."

It's the 'for the most part' that would seem odd in context, but let's not dwell on that. Anri is a traditional sort, ergo in the presence of a new person trying to make friends, she took a short andd polite bow and introduced herself.

"Anri Fuyunaito."

"For the most part, eh?"

He was kind of glad that she wouldn't leave a wise-ass comment on his awkward way of speaking to strangers. At least so far. He was still paranoid of that happening, of course.

He snapped out of his paranoia, at least for now, when she introduced herself. Or, he assumed that was what she was doing. He couldn't tell, because she said it so fast and out of the blue that it confused him a bit. Along with the bow. This girl was the formal type, it seemed.

Unfortunately, Brendan wasn't the formal type like she was.

"Ah, is that your name?"

He offered out his hand to her in a welcoming manner, cracking a smile.

"You don't need to be so formal to me. My name's Brendan. Brendan Kuragya. Nice to meet ya!"

Ah, well fortunately for you, Brendan-san, Anri is no wise-ass. Sarcastic comments and slight-of-hand insults were not her style, nor anything she was any good at. She would be more of the direct approach sort of personality, harsh and cutting words before a summary execution beating. Still, there were always exceptions to the rule, but at least you're not getting on her bad side, right? Well anyway, she noticed that her actions just now were getting her a bit of a stare.

"Ah, is that your name?"

She blinked, confused now. Was it not clear?

"Yes, it is."

"You don't need to be so formal to me. My name's Brendan. Brendan Kuragya. Nice to meet ya!"

For a few seconds, she looked at the offered hand, partially because it wasn't her custom - at least not for the first meeting - and partially because of her own singular issues. For one brief instant, she'd reacted as though there were something wrong, like the hand was a python. Things had rather-skewed her personal lines of trust, even down to that level. Still, this was only a brief delay, as Anri was also not the fearful type. She took the hand, and then asked...

"The same. So, one of your parents is Japanese?"

She guessed this from the naming. He had such a last name, but his first name was something more befitting this area. Besides, it was something she knew from personal experience, namely about her brother, Max.

He felt relief when she accepted his hand. Hey, maybe he wasn't so bad at being a nice, normal, sociable teenager after all! Things were going swimmingly, in his mind. Probably a lot better than how they were going in reality, but hey, every step should count for something!

"The same. So, one of your parents is Japanese?"

He nodded, glad that his somewhat awkward. in his opinion anyway, way of being named would make for some conversation. Especially since this girl appeared to be Japanese as well.

"My mother was Japanese, and I, as well as my... father... inherited her last name."

He stuttered and slowed a bit on the part where he mentioned his father, for reasons he assumed she wouldn't understand. He tried to cover this blunder with an even brighter smile, but it wasn't looking great, to say the least.

"So, what brings you to this school? Tired of your old one?"

You mean, you couldn't tell that the quiet Asian girl with the Japanese name was, in fact, Japanese? Well, okay, nobody's got a perfect sense of ethnicity, but there were enough hints around. And why is the narrator asking about this anyway? Right, so...this conversation coulld remain awkward or it could go places. It all depends upon you. For instance, Anri asked about the name because she thought of her brother and wondered if other similar people were anything like him? FYI: Max Fuyunaito is badass.

"My mother was Japanese, and I, as well as my... father... inherited her last name."

"So, she must be important, then."

Name-inheritance was most-commonly the female inheriting the male, though not always. For it to be reversed, it should be considered that the family name of one was somehow measurably more important than the other, for reasons historical or otherwise. This guess may have been true, though there were other reasons to discard the male family name. Anri paused, then worked herself up to speak plainly about her own familly.

"My mother holds an important place in society, but she also respected my father enough to take his name instead."

"So, what brings you to this school? Tired of your old one?"

That...made her go silent, breaking eye contact for a moment. She did not answer, per se. She simply said...

"It had nothing to do with school."

An important place, eh? Brendan could only assume that translated to being rich and loaded. Or at least, so it was in his simple-minded head. The way she looked, talked and moved could only point to that fact, at least in his opinion.

"It had nothing to do with school."

That made him feel a bit down, if he could say so. This girl, Anri, clearly had a deeper reason than just a transfer, or than for misbehavior or some such thing. Whatever the reason, he felt a bit obligated to attempt to cheer her up, if she was indeed feeling down the way he thought she was.

"Oh, I see. Anything I could... help with, maybe?"

He responded in an inquisitive tone, genuinely curious about what was on her mind right now.

Well no, that really wasn't it at all. Brendan couldn't know, of course, but it was a fact that her mother was important in other matters important to Japan and that her traditional values came from a woman who holds those rather dearly as...a spiritualist. She was the daughter of a religious personality, one of the better-respected ones. Anri was rich in character, not in cashflow. An incorrect assumption, but no matter. We all make mistakes.

"Oh, I see. Anything I could... help with, maybe?"

For a moment, she now looked at him with uncertainty. Why was he making this offer? He didn't know her and he should not get involved in things he didn't understand or that she was not prepared to share so easily. She came here to simply try an mingle with people and it came to this so soon? Why? Anri pinche dthe bridge of her nose, closing her eyes with a sigh.

"It's not something you can deal with any easier than I can. You're fine doing what you're doing, because I've been out of touch and a friend of mine brought me here to help that."

Total honesty, though it leaves out the part of WHY because she did not wish to talk about that. Not here, not now, and not like this. Supposedly, she was here to enjoy herself, after all.

Out of touch, huh? Brendan had decided to put two and two together. Out of touch, and quiet... means she hasn't talked to many people recently? Or for a long time... like gears working in that rather simple brain of his, this was the conclusion he came up with, and whether it was accurate or not, it was the only thing he could go on right now because she didn't very much want to explain any more than that.

Brendan understood the way in which she wanted to move away from that topic, and complied.

"Alright then. Well, what do you do for fun? Hobbies? Anything you're interested in that we could do right now? This place has been kinda boring lately. Everyone seems to know everyone despite a majority of 'em being new to the place... I kinda envy those people, to be honest."

He sighed, but smiled immediately afterwards to keep the atmosphere from getting depressing. What else could he say but be brutally honest? This girl seemed to have similar experiences, or so he guessed, but he wanted to have fun while he was here so he decided there would be no better way for a new beginning than to be brutally honest.

Well, to his credit, this particular answer was pretty much on the nose. Anri had not spoken with any peoplle for the longest time. Okay, for several years. Probably not one for the Guiness Book of World Records, but a decidedly long time...and more than enough to become a social pariah, not includding complications. If he'd made the observation out loud, Anri would've been in agreement and pleased that he understood. As of now, though, she appreciated his willingness to move on in topic.

"Truthfully, I do know a couple people here, from Japan. Namely, him..."

She pointed over to the young man that she'd come in with, who was currently chatting up someone else at the event.

"...and...hmmm."

She looke around, but his usual recognizable self was nowhere to be found.

"I guess he isn't here yet."

Actually, he was, because the person she was looking for was Hakuro Kuroda, a boy known for his habit of wearing a trenchcoat and hat all over the place...and he wasn't wearing those articles right now. Hakuro was actually elsewhere, currently in a tuxedo and looking relatively normal for once...which is precisely why Anri couldn't find him. She let her hand drop.

"In any case, the things I do mainly are things like reading, fighting, and the use of swords. I think there are clubs for the last ones..."
