So she did know some people here. Brendan was relieved, but also a bit depressed, if he had to be honest. He was the only person he knew that was a true loner down to the very last meaning of the word. Ah well, at least he was STARTING to make progress at the whole talking thing. The boy was very much surprised, in fact. For a random burst of courage, he thought he was doing pretty well.

"Fighting and swords, huh? I'm quite the fan of those things myself, ya know."

He zoned out for a second, thinking back on all those fights he had with bullies, from school to school... oh geez, fan isn't even the right word to describe it. Fighting's practically a daily routine for him at this point. For practically no reason that would be obvious to Anri, he blushed slightly in embarrassment.

"Aha, well... maybe I chose the wrong word, but uhhh... you know how it is."

Some people are more alone than others, but we know what Anri would be like even if she had no one: Wandering the countryside, from city to city, craving the presence of her beloved familly and kicking the asses of anyone who got in her way. She was...a most unusual girl, one given to harming others because of the sorts of things they did to still yet other people. Brendan would have no way of knowing this, but this would have been her mindset since she was ten years old. There had been some...issues...back home.

"Fighting and swords, huh? I'm quite the fan of those things myself, ya know."

Then, he blushed for some reason. Why would he? In her eyes, there was nothing wrong with this.

"Aha, well... maybe I chose the wrong word, but uhhh... you know how it is."

"I think so. My mother taught us in her spare time. It is strange for someone like her to be so gifted, but it seems to run in the family."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The setting: A traditional Japanese-style training room, either in a dojo or one's own home. The surroundings are picturesque, serene. Four lightly-shade walls with sparse decorum and a number of places for weapons or equipment to be used here. Over in the bokuton area, three slots are empty. The floor has mats and the room is well-lit. Three people stand within. One is off to the side, wearing a kimono that is not inhibiting in movement, a woman with black hair and piercing blue eyes, as well as a knowing smile. The other two are hard to determine, as they are wearing Kendo padding and masks, but one of them is Anri at a younger age, ten at most. The other is a young man, older than her, with black hair. They are both holding their wooden weapons and facing each other. The third one is in the woman's hand, pointed end at the floor.
"Begin."
The two of them approached and took swings at each other rapidly, clashing their blades at different angles while trying to find the weakness in their attack and defense to break on through. For the boy, it seemed to be that he did not like to strike two-handed in most cases, and so his two handed strikes had power but less finesse. For Anri, she had a great deal of finesse, but it was in compensation for her lack of strength. The two were deadlocked, in a way. He was very skillful, but she was very dodgey, and a dodging opponent could sneak in a win after ducking, so he had to hold back sometimes. In the midst of this, the woman smirked and raised her bokuton. Then, without warning, she threw it at them, putting a spin on the thing. The boy backed up and the girl reverse-somersaulted before returning to her feet. The two of them took off their masks, looking at her. The boy, with blue eyes as well, glared over at the woman.
"Mother, what are you doing? That could've hurt."
"You know how it is, Max. Sometimes, the unexpected may happen, and how we deal with it will measure our worth in a heated situation. Neither of you were hurt, so it shows good promise."
"I see..."
"Anri, you seem to compensate well without glasses on."
"Yes, ma'am. I don't have so much a problem up close."
"Good, then start once more..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She...seemed to smile, slightly.

"Perhaps I could spar with you some time. Not now, but some time."

OOC: Oh geez, you've been waiting a while, huh? Sorry! >.<

"Your mother? Ah, I'm familiar with the concept of things running in the family, too..."

He thought back on his family's known reputation as soldiers, generation after generation, fighting for their country. It wasn't something he was proud to admit, however, so he decided not to say anything more than that about it.

Brendan smiled at her offer. She was interested in sparring later, eh? That could be interesting, if a little bit hard for him to do with his rather weird moral code in such situations. Her smile indicated that she was, perhaps, happy at this whole situation? It was subtle, but he assumed that was the case.

"Some time, huh? Sure, I'd be up for that. Uhh, some time, of course. When would ya be available for something like that to happen?"

"Your mother? Ah, I'm familiar with the concept of things running in the family, too..."

She nodded.

"Traditions are important in my family, and many others."

Huh... Familiar with it... Curious. Did that mean that his parents did not observe any particular ones themselves, besides maybe some of the basics? How strange it would be to meet a family that didn't observe any regular practice, as opposed to that of others who must have dozens of them. Her own mother being a spiritualisty and her dad being an accountant, there were quite a few things set in stone. Not in a suffocating way, in fact she was fine with them...especially after all that had happened.

"Some time, huh? Sure, I'd be up for that. Uhh, some time, of course. When would ya be available for something like that to happen?"

She gave this some thought. Time was not a great restraint for her, in most cases.

"I suppose it would be...times that are not school, club, or studying. I'm still too new here to be very...involved...in things, so I don't have any set schedule."

Looking at him just then, she pulled out her cellphone and flipped it open.

"You would be okay with...checking first?"
