What a night! The Opening Gala was truly an event of glory and celebration. Lian had spent quite some time just walking around the festively decorated campus, enjoying the bright lights, the happy mood, and the excited atmosphere. Somewhere along the evening she had ended up in Vision Hall, where the dance was held. She had sat down on one of the small tables at the side and was watching the activities. Since Dr. Devi had called the event "semi-formal", Lian had decided on a simple, striped dress, enhanced by a puffy flower on the collar, that she had bought some time ago and sewed on. The girl did not wear make up usually, but she had put on some light lipgloss and mascara - as far as she knew that was the minimum amount of makeup required for a party. The girl had decided she looked good. Not too overdone, as that simply wasn´t her style, and not too plain either. So when she had slipped into her flat-heeled shoes, she was quite satisfied and excited to go. And here she was now, after her initial anticipation, feeling utterly out of place. There were so many beautiful couples dancing in the gym, well-dressed girl students chatting and flirting with male students (and in some cases, teachers), everyone seemed to belong to some kind of group and was enjoying the evening. It was lonely amidst this bustle and all of the other pretty women made her feel self-conscious too. Kayne Gravesworth, the senior who was supposed to meet her tonight, had not shown up yet, or they had missed each other. Too late Lian had realized they had not appointed a meeting place or time, and so she felt a little stupid and a little alone right now. What was he up to? That thought had crossed her often during the last few days, and the curiosity had become unbearable. Now, disappointment mixed with nervousness as she wondered if she had done something wrong, if he maybe had set her up again... "Cobolds!", she hissed quietly. If only she had taken a book with her! She could have sat down in the garden and passed the time easily. With a start, Lians face went blank and she blinked a few times. Oh. Of course. With a mental Facepalm, the girl hopped on her feet and went to the entrance of Vision Hall. Maybe he was out under the cherry tree, where they had met. Lian tugged at her earring in a nervy gesture, someway she hoped he was not there waiting for her, as it would be a horrible faux pas on her part. Spoiler: click to toggle

Smile, nod, chuckle. Rinse and repeat. The clique of students that out of sheer hope called themselves his friends was currently busy exchanging boring vacation stories with the sole purpose know if someone else had done something more interesting than the other, then try to do something more outrageous themselves. Kayne held his champagne flute and took a sip. It was of course, just punch. But the pack of overpampered students he currently surrounded himself with had the notion that drinking out of a glorified cup would somehow enhance their image or allow them to enjoy their drinks more. He emptied it and placed it on a nearby table, then excused himself for the night under the pretext of having an appointment. He could feel the curious and paranoid gaze of the girls in the group, who didn't want him in a place full of females out of their sight. Kayne walked down the stairs of the music room where the elite students were holding their own private ball, and quickly realized that the party was somewhere else. The chatter and music from the Gym could be heard even from this place, relatively far since it was in the opposite side of the campus. He was the only figure walking in the gardens and hallways, dimly lit by decorations. He glanced at the cherry tree from a window, the sight of it during night time refreshed the feeling of that meeting. What an intriguing girl. She was so common and yet she managed to catch his attention. She seemed so meek and yet showed more cunning than her more privileged peers. Wasn't this becoming just a caprice, was his reason to see her something more simple? Yes. As a matter of fact, he realized very well that the major drive to see her again was because he enjoyed their chat that day. She didn't let him have his way. He should've been angry but it was something so unusual and she was so honest about it that he couldn't bring himself to feel sour. The sounds of the party blasted around his ears when he walked inside the gym doors. Immediately and undiscretely, some students starting giving him looks of amazement and interest. A member of the elite, in such a place! Was it not true that the richer students had their own ball? What would someone like him possibly want in there? But Kayne's eyes were already locked on a short girl with a green dress. He walked past some first year currently talking to a redhead in a black dress and a petite young girl in an innapropiate red dress. He could've sworn he felt a chill run up his spine when he passed by him, but it was probably the air conditioning of the place. After all, it was pretty crowded. ''Cobolds!'' The girl seemed frustrated about something. He smiled. Had she been waiting for him that long? Did his absence irritate her? He approached her from behind and whispered in her ear. "Speak of the Devil and he will show himself." |

A small gasp escaped Lian at the sudden sensation of Kaynes breath on her neck. She whirled around and took a step backwards. Why did he always come so close? It probably had something to do with his games, she figured. The girl looked him over and noticed the stares he was getting. Well, he did seem out of place a little, if only because he was the only one who probably knew about REAL Galas and the like. Sadly, the attention also started focusing on her and it made her feel uncomfortable. "Cobolds are not devils", she directed at him in slight irritation at the weird connection. Before she realized what she was doing, she had entered full-freak mode and started educating him on the creatures: "Cobolds, from german lesser mythology, are either benevolent, but mischievous housekeepers or more akin to knockers of british origin: malevolent earth sprites that haunt mines." Her eyes lit up on the subject and she was lost for a moment, about to describe why knockers were called that way and how they connected to cobolds. But as she took breath to continue, the situation came back to her and she closed her mouth again sheepishly. That was probably not a topic he was interested in... Like noone but her seemed to be. "Besides, had we not established that you are a vampire?", Lian gave Kayne a cheeky smile. Neither had he set her up, nor had she made a mistake. She was glad and hoped this would be an interesting evening. "Actually, Cain is considered to be the father of all vampires... There are several novels that take this approach, but the origin of that thought is hinted at in the bible itself." The girl tilted her head to the side in thought. "What a Coincidence." Not for the first time, she wondered why someone named their son after the first murderer. It was kind of... macabre. She sent him a cautious glance and wondered if she had been rude again. It had not been her intention, but she had this stupid habit of blurting out with such things unexpectedly. Smoothly, Lian gathered her short dress in an elegent curtsy and bow. She wanted to show him that she actually knew her manners too. The games could begin, she would take the challenges. "Good Evening, Gravesworth-shi. What do you think of the gala so far?" Her hands folded modestly in front of her and she graced him with a pleasant, relaxed smile. |

"Hmmm? Someone takes mythological accuracy to heart I see. " He couldn't stop the petite asian from blabbering away so he might as well try and learn something. Rather, he simply observed how her demeanour changed from shy and retracted to outright enthusiastic and preachy. Her lips opened and closed, weaving words and she seemed so different from the meek girl under the cherry tree. Just as it did the landscape, did night time have an effect on the girl? Then of course... "Very impressive attempt at ethymology but the name Kayne and the variations Caine, Kain and Kaine come from the Gaelic and Irish name Kane. Alternatively, it is a deformation of the hebrew word Qyn for Spear and Little Fighter." He smiled almost in satisfaction as he nodded and closed his eyes calmly. "I'm afraid any sinister connotations with the mythical first murderer and the lord of the undead are a rather unfortunate coincidence made from your notion of me being a blood craving creature. Which is interesting because if I was..." He actually had to bend a bit since she was so much shorter than him, pretending to dust off her shoulder as he whispered in her ear. "...Then that would bode ill for a maiden during night time now, wouldn't it?" The way his smile showed a hint of his canines was at least a little fitting. He gently took her small hand into his once again. It was warmer than his, soft and smooth. It felt pleasant to hold if anything because it was delicate at the touch. He lead her away from the prying eyes of the ballroom and out of the door. "Accompany me to a walk. I'm sure you haven't yet seen the main gardens at night. I can't allow my guest to miss it." |

Interested, Lian listened to Kayne explaining his names etymology to her and nodded lightly. Quite different than her interpretation, that was for sure. She was always eager to learn new stuff and so decided to store the information and later write it down too. "Excuse me, it seems I misunderstood your name then. Is it not written C-A-I-N?" Apparently, her myth-infused mind had jumped to that spelling on its own. She had not even considered a different thing. The girl shook her head at such a thing. Sometimes she was wierded out by herself. Kaynes invasion of her private space seemed to be part of his new game, she thought with a light shudder. She managed not to flinch back, but her pose stiffened, not only at the proximity, but also at the words. The doubt that had lingered in the back of her mind resurfaced and she couldn´t help but wonder if she had gotten to know someone potentially dangerous. Her dark eyes warily followed his movements and if they had narrowed a bit on the brush on her shoulder, they now widened in wonder and... indignation? at the smooth gesture her partner made, at the touch of skin against skin, cool meeting warm. The way the temperatures clashed sent a shiver down the smaller girls spine. This... was too personal. By far. And she had the feeling Kayne knew how uncomfortable it made her. How rude to not even ask for permission! Yet the cool touch was not unpleasant and Lian found herself unconsciously grasping just the tiniest bit tighter. Had the gym heated up that much? She only now realized that all the dancing bodies produced quite some heat, but he seemed to be cool still. The look she sent him as a reaction was cryptic to say the least. The girl eyed him deep in thoughts and nothing that would betray those was visible on the surface - not even her usually expressive eyes that pierced his gaze let anything known. Lian let any possible answer he might have wanted to induce fall to silence. She had not expected such a seemingly genuinely gentle gesture from him, and she had not expected herself to let it happen like that. It was a much different movement than on their first meeting, where she had kept the distance and retracted her hand. But now... she didn´t really want to let go. And again, she was questioning why he acted like he did. Kayne Gravesworth was definitely not a boring man. After a moment, she slowly turned her head away and inclined it to show her agreement. He led her out of the sticky ballroom and she graciously followed him with light, easy steps, her shoes not making more sound than absolute necessary. As they passed the doors and the cool evening air embraced them, Lians lips parted in a relieved sigh. She stopped, halting Kayne as well and closed her eyes for an instant, enjoying the sensation with a mellow expression. The cool wind washed over her face like his hand had captured hers. It was a really nice evening too, no clouds, no rain in sight yet. Until her birthday it would have much more rain though, it was best to cherish those moments now. "Isn´t it a wonderful feeling?", she mumbled in a low tone, her head in a tilted position as if she was listeing to something. Then she opened her eyes that were now clouded with a certain distance that daydreamers often displayed and looked up at Kayne. While still knowing fully where she was and who was next to her, Lian had drifted off to the magic of the night and the adventure it promised. "Yes, please let us go to the gardens." She smiled a small, mysterious smile and stood surrounded by the darkness, her hair softly waved in the breeze and framed her face like a black halo. Suddenly, a light fell on her features, a low, but visible glow that danced over her face. The girl blinked slowly and then twirled around until their hands were barely linked anymore. The pair was surrounded by small, glowing dots that seemed to float in the air, illuminating the area around them. Her face shone with joy, the smile widened and she carefully reached out with her free hand to try and touch one. Of course they evaded her half hearted attempt. "Yingke!", she exclaimed in admiration. |

"K-A-Y-N-E. But the resemblance is remarkable." He made his explanation calmly but even so he had become upon the interesting notion that out of all the people he had ever met, no one had been concerned about getting his name right. Not a single one of them cared about the one thing that gives humans the very first bridge to connecting with others. And this girl whom he had met but days ago had asked. Was it just a compulsion for being correct, some form of courtesy? Yes, it had to be. She had, after all, no reason to be polite to him sans fear of repercussions. The thought made him feel uneasy. It'd be a shame if such a cunning woman was so easily intimidated by his position or influence just like any other. The thought somewhat surprised him. Wouldn't it b better for him to control her if she was afraid of him? Rather, do I want to control her at all? As he lead her towards the garden, the murmur of conversations and music died out behind them. No, he didn't want to control her. Why would he? What could he possibly gain from turning this girl into his asset? Rather, he would simply assocrough heriate with her because it was amusing to see her react. At least, that's what he told himself. She stopped and took in the atmosphere around her, and Kayne's eyes wandered through her relaxed and fairy-like features. How could she draw such enjoyment from a mundane and common thing like wind? But then she turned her attention towards a firefly as if it was the most wonderful thing she had ever seen. Kayne frowned slightly. Had he been mistaken? Was he losing his time with her, nothing more than a simple teenage girl who had but fickle moments of brilliance? The thought rubbed him in an unpleasant way and he couldn't exactly pinpoint why. He extended his hand towards where the bugs were flying and after three attempts, closed his hand around one. He scrunched his nose at the notion of having grabbed an insect that, shiny or not, was an insect. But he humored his guest and opened his palm towards her, revealing the bug still alive and simply landed on his palm. "Most girls ask for flowers. If an insect will please you, then take it." |

Lian smiled at his reply, nodded a little and agreed. "An interesting coincidence. I will keep it in mind correctly now." In the back of her mind a voice whispered that co-incidences never were random. There they stood, surrounded by a dance of fireflies, and the tall boy was grasping into the air to get one for the girl. Lian watched him with a small frown upon her brows and a slight smile playing on her lips. The way the well-groomed, slick, charming Senior reached out, a look of concentration on his eyes was endearing somehow. But this time around she really wondered what had gotten into him. She quickly hid her smile with her hand when he turned around, but the look on his face quickly melted it away all the same. That minor facial movement told her enough to know that he was disgusted. Really now! That was nothing to be disgusted of! Why did she feel offended by his gesture and words? The girl slightly huffed her cheeks in annoyance but said nothing. She turned her eyes down to look into his hand and was relieved to see the bug alive. It fluttered lightly with its wings and unrelentlessly let his body flicker its light. Carefully, she held her hand to Kaynes - their both hands were connected now and they stood rather close, her mind provided helpfully; and waited for the bug to crawl over to it. Barely breathing, so not to chase it away, the girl scrutinized the small thing and watched interested how it spread out its wings a few times. Then, she threw out her hand a little and set it free again, watching it join the dance of the others. "In china, fireflies symbolize perseverance and success.", Lian told Kayne in a voice that had a chilly tone in it. Her lips were pressed together and her head was turned so that she could avoid looking into his eyes. Why had his display of displeasure stung so, she wondered. "It is considered good luck to catch one, and children try to all summer long." Her face lighted a little and she looked up at the bugs with a small smile and soft eyes. She had done so too, together with Yun and later Ming too. Sometimes she missed her early childhood years very much. Yes, maybe that was it. She had felt her memories belittled, even though he had done so unknowingly. What a silly thing. With a small sigh, Lian turned halfway to her partner and eyed him from below her eyelashes. It was pretty dark where they stood and so she had to squint her eyes a little after looking directly into the fireflies light. “This is the second time you have given me something I have not asked for, yet implied I did.” She said with curiosity in her voice. The question behind this statement was obvious. Why, why, why? It seemed this applied to everything the boy did. Even though she did not know yet what kind of game he had planned, she figured it was time to take action herself. “Tell me a little about yourself, Gravesworth-shi.” The girl asked for, a genuine smile playing on her lips. She knew nothing more about him than his name, a vague thing about him being rich, and the hint of his personality she had glimpsed so far. “What do you do when you´re not out aiding maidens in need?” Her raised eyebrows and the taunting spark in her dark eyes spoke clearly that she still suspected a higher motive behind that. Something intrigued her about the way he acted. Yes, she truly wished to know his normal behaviour. |

As Lian once again released the firefly -He thought she was going to keep it- he had to wonder what possible significance did his action have on her. She wasn't pleased nor angry, she looked somewhat bothered by his gift. Perseverance, success, and he had simply extended his hand and caught the bug with little effort. Was that supposed to mean something or was it simply an overanalysis of some folklore tale? China. That explained her features and the way she carried herself so humbly and demurely. "This is the second time you have given me something I have not asked for, yet implied I did." Good point. He wasn't being generous. No, there had to be another explanation. Never before had he met someone he hoped would come to somehow understand him- No, it wasn't that either. The victor must always be alone. "Consider it a long-term investment. I will show you my kindness if you keep me company. Quid pro quo. Isn't that the basis of human behavior? Wether it is a positive emotion, enjoyment, pleasure or material interests, people approach others with an objective in mind. I had not realized that I was demanding your company for free." He extended his hand towards the fireflies. They seemed afraid by his sudden movement and scattered from him a little. "If a significant insect is what it takes for you to consider this evening not wasted, then I can get you as many as you wish. You have given me your time so it's only natural I pay you back isn't it?" He concluded his exposition with something that was meant to be a kind smile, but after such a cynical and jagged view of life, it came off as slightly tragic. "Tell me a little about yourself, Gravesworth-shi. What do you do when you're not aiding maidens in need?" Ah, there it was. She wished for information about him. In the end, curiosity was a common trait in people. But yet, she didn't seem interested in the normal information he gave to people, like his career or work, nor any of his connections would be of use for her. What was he supposed to share in response? "I'm afraid I don't understand your question." He turned his back on her and rested his arms behind his back, hands locked. "If you wish to know about my itinerary, I come to school from monday to friday, follow with my part time job as an intern in the Mayor's office or the martial arts club activities and then head back to the manor where I continue my job and do homework until midnight. I dine on my room's living room and then head to bed, to repeat the schedule." He turned his head slightly, his features all but shadowed by the dim lights. Only his green eyes seemed to glint in the darkness. "On the weekends...I go see my father. I manage to sometimes every three or two months. After that I read and practice my taxidermy. The texts on biology and anatomy make my work remarkably easier. If that is a hobby, I suppose you can call it that. But I mostly occupy my free time reading or practicing my swordsmanship." He turned towards her, a solemn look on his face but satisfied nonetheless. "Was that information satisfying, Fei?" |

Lian stared at Kayne with wonder while he explained his 'motive'. What a way to view the world. While in the greater sense, and from a psychological point, what he said was absolutely true, she had to shake her head. Her smile became wider and the girl held her hand to her mouth as she gave a silvery laugh at his words. Hidden behind his attempt to rationalize the issue, he had revealed something much more important. He liked her company! He wished for her company and feared she would deem their time together wasted. The thought made Lian beam, and her eyes shone with a sudden burst of joice. His words were so... human. The clumsy attempt at a smile, a genuine smile, paired with his somewhat twisted logic on the matter gave her the feeling he was not used to opening up to people. Yet he did for her. “So you feel the need to pay me for something I do of my own free will”, she started out a little provocative, her lips opened to a delicate, small smile. Two steps brought her directly in front of him, where she looked up at him without hiding her amused, happy expression at his sillyness. “Have you not considered that I simply enjoy your company as well? I had no other reason to attend this gala than meet you again. You are intrigueing. I like talking to you. There is no need to repay me. But... Thank you, nonetheless.” More she dared not say, out of apprehension to sound sappy and too private. This was only their second meeting after all. But she mirrored his smile and tilted her head to the left, leaning forward on her feet a little. She wanted to watch his reaction to that very closely, she had the feeling it would be unusual. Once again, he surprised her a little. She noted favourably that he called her by her last name, too. Whether he did it out of respect for her culture, or out of something else, she did not know though. His answer to her question did give her a certain idea about his life, yes, but it was not really what she had asked for. Was each of his days planned out? Did he live by a timetable? To only have free time on the weekends, that sounded very... adult to her. “You only see your father once every few months? Isn´t that lonely...?” She asked in disbelief, her eyes wide as she stared up at him. The girl could not imagine that. Especially since the boy did not have other family, as far as she knew. Her own father came home almost every evening, depending on his shift earlier or later, and they would all sit down and eat together. His 'hobby' was something that disturbed her a little. Was that what he considered a fun pastime? The girl started gnawing on her lower lip before reaching out to the one straw she could take from that. A shared interest. “You like reading, too? Do you have any favourite authors?” |

The boy raised an eyebrow at Lian's seeming amusement with his way of reasoning. What was so funny? She did this on her own free will? And how exactly did she draw any benefit from doing so? It did not made any semblance of sense and- "Have you not considered that I simply enjoy your company as well? I had no other reason to attend this gala than meet you again. You are intrigueing. I like talking to you. There is not need to repay me But...thank you nonetheless." She said it so naturally, so honestly. Was she daft?! How could she expose her feelings in such a way, what if someone less noble decided to take advantage of them? Had she not considered the consequences? Had she not- Losing your cool, boy? Worried about her? He cleared his throat and passed his palm against his forehead, subtly wiping some sweat that had started to form. He took a deep breath. "...Don't you say such irresponsible things." The fireflies had once again settled in the grass, leaves and flowers. He carefully removed a pin locking the entrance to the actual garden. The small metallic gate opened revealing a small stone path. The slightly overgrown grass and the erratic flower growth made it look like a forgotten patch of nature in the middle of campus. A small fountain, though turned off, rested in the middle where overgrown ivy had reclaimed it. It was easy to see why such a thing had been allowed to happen: It was, in its own way, beautiful. Keeping his eyes in the fountain, he took Lian's hand again to lead her into the garden. He felt a bit more self conscious about doing so but attributed it to the atmosphere and fatigue from the night. Contrary to popular belief, he wasn't very much of a social butterfly. That, and it was almost time for him to take the medicine. And he needed a private place for that. "My father is a great man. I have nothing but respect for him. If he deems his work more important than me, then he must have a good reason. It is not my place to question him. I owe him too much." A sudden air of nostalgia managed to register on his face. The draft of days where late night stories and warm evenings were common, when the extensive mansion seemed alive. Simpler times. Offering Lian a seat on the fountain's comfortable edge, he looked for something inside his black blazer. Sure enough, a small vial was now in his hand. He faced away from her and opened it, pouring the oily content on his palm before applying it to his face, neck and hands. "I consider reading both a recreation and an investment. If I had to favor any authors I would pick Jung, Dostoievsky, Alexandre Dumas Jr and Sartre." He let the vial fall into his pocket again and finished rubbing the oily substance until it dissapeared into his pale skin. He turned around again and though he was once again hiding under a charming smile, he couldn't hide his apologetic air. "I must apply the medicine like clockwork. Failure to do so draws severe consequences. Nothing to be concerned of. Shall we continue then?" And with that said, he sat by a prudent distance of her, crossed his legs and rested his hands on his knee. Though the posture was extremely formal, it looked just natural on him. The erratic light from the fireflies cast shadows on his face but again those green eyes didn't seem to dim with anything. |

Still smiling happily, Lian only quickly glanced at Kayne when he scolded her. Irresponsible? What did he mean by that? But he seemed absorbed in thought so she let him be. As she turned to look where he was leading her, her eyes widened and her face started to glow. Why had she not found this garden before? The gate, gallantly opened for her by the gentleman, seemed like a portal to a magical world, which was illuminated by stars and fireflies only. Lian held her breath as she stepped through and only filled her lungs again when she was a few steps inside. The cool grass brushed at her legs and some nighttime insects fluttered out from their hiding places. Crickets paused in their concert as they walked by, but quickly continued to fill the air with their music. At the fountain, a delighted giggle escaped her. With shining eyes Lian took in the surroundings and just as if she had chaged upon entering, her face changed into a slightly darker expression, something like a mystic smidge that played around her lips. Things like this were her true world. She turned her attention back to Kayne and noticed the appreciation in his voice. Even though he seemed honest, she could tell there was more to it than that. He also hadn´t answered whether it was lonely, but from the look on his face, it probably was. So she simply nodded and accepted his response, she didn´t want to pry. Instead, the girl took the 'seat' he offered her and scrambled upon the rim. He was taller, he could simply sit down, but she had to stretch a little and once she was seated, her feet dangled a hands breadth over the ground. The girl folded her hands neatly in her lap and kept her back straight, but her playfully swinging legs gave her away. Lian watched his unusual actions for a moment before turning her head upward, looking into the night sky. His choice of authors was so... sophisticated. All were great authors, philosophers and drama writers. It fit him, she decided. But in turn it made her feel small, since she actually preferred novels and fairytales... The girl timidly moistened her lips in tension and tried to keep her voice brave. “Those are some impressive authors. Philosophy and Psychology are complicated topics, are they not?” she could not deny that she was impressed. She tilted her head back to him and caught his charming smile once again. She returned it and shrugged lightly with her shoulders, what needed to be done, had to be done. Even though she was curious she had the hunch it was not something he wished to talk about – and talk about illnesses really didn´t belong into this wonderful overgrown garden. In a small, but smooth gesture, Lian indicated at the whole of the small garden. “What a beautiful garden! It looks magical in this atmosphere. Why did they let it get overgrown like this?” she asked with a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. |

He heard her comment on his choice of authors but refrained from showing a reaction and hoped she assumed he had missed that line. Philosophy and Psychology weren't all that complicated. They were simply subjective. And people don't cope well with subjectivity, subtlety and guileness. To be fair, he wasn't entirely sure why he felt almost compelled to know more about the self and the mind, the ways it affected how people lived their lives. Maybe you're just as clueless of a kid like anybody else. ''What a beautiful garden! It looks magical in this atmosphere. Why did they let it overgrow like this?'' He looked at the flowers, the grass, the fireflies. The answer came to his lips before he could understand it. "It was necessary." He looked away from the patch of flowers he was glancing at and caught a rather elated Lian commenting on the garden. Truth be told, she seemed like the place complemented her existence. Had he not brought her there himself he could've easily fallen under the impression the girl was a fairy. The way she seemed to rejoice with nature, her warm kindness that irradiated with a smile and the air of simplicity... She didn't seem unremarkable anymore. Her eyes looked that much more enthralling when she looked at the distance, her long eyelashes remarking her femenine look. Her lips looked moist and inviting. Her chest moved slightly as she drew breath, and her green dress complimented her lithe body quite nicely. Her legs- "What in the hell am I doing?" The mutter came out of his lips before he could do anything to stop it. No, this was unnatural and wrong. He wasn't supposed to be looking at her with those eyes. She had foolishly given him her trust and as the heir of the Gravesworths, the least he could do was show proper behavior. He blinked twice and sighed deeply. He stood up, dusted off his pants discretely and then... His hand caught hers. And suddenly their bodies were close. "What kind of Gala is this without a proper dance?" Surrounded by the fantasy that was that forgotten patch of green in the academy, the fireflies- light seemed to burn that much brighter, bringing a lighter shade of green to his eyes. "I hope you give me the honor of this dance. There is no music but then again, this place would be such a waste to not dance in." His hand rested on the curve of her back, careful not to touch her in a way that would feel innapropiate. His other hand was raised slighty to his side, hers resting on his palm. Her warmth had somehow transferred to his. His hand was smooth but clearly bigger than hers, which looked like it belonged to a porcelain doll. Though their bodies weren't touching, the distance between them was almost inexistent. He looked down to her and some wild impulse to to smile was thankfully subjugated. He could smell the floral scent of her hair. He could, as a matter of fact, hear his own heartbeat. Anxiousness, clearly. Nothing more. After all, he had to properly entertain a guest. "Shall we?" |

Lian was quite absorbed into the atmosphere, watching the fireflies dance and letting her mind wander a little. A sudden brush of wind blew her dark hair forward, and Lian gently raised her hand to push it back in order. She absentmindedly hummed a small tune and almost didn´t catch what Kayne was saying. When it did reach her, she blinked a little in confusion. Necessary? Still floating along the clouds in her mind, she slowly turned her head and opened her mouth to ask what he meant, her lips glittering from the remnants of lipgloss she had put on earlier. Her dark eyes accidently got stuck on his a split second before he cursed quietly. She jumped at the unexpected words, clearly not aimed at her but still unsettling a little. Lian wondered what he had been thinking – that look in his eyes she had caught for but a second had been dark, deep and unknown to her. But something in it had held... intensity that let a shiver run down her spine. “What´s wrong?”, Lian asked and then gasped in the next second. She stumbled at the abrupt movement, right into his grip, and suddenly she was dizzy, yes, dizzy for sure, because her breath hitched in her throat as she looked up at Kayne with wide eyes. "What kind of Gala is this without a proper dance?" Lian could not comprehend what happened for a moment. Kayne was close, too close and she unconsciously stiffened at the proximity. Part of her panicked to struggle free and flinch away, but something kept her rooted in place. It was like her body was extra sensitive wherever they touched, his hand on her lower back seemed to spark, their joined hands were tingling, somehow her hand had ended up on his shoulder like it belonged there. The remaining space between their bodies was pulsing with energy. Kaynes sharp features were shadowed in the twilight, but it made his pearly smile and his eyes stand out even more. Those emeralds that drew her in, she could not pull away, she didn´t want to, she wanted to drown in them. Why did a boy get so beautiful eyes? It was unfair, she subconsciously noted. Her own eyes seemed downright dull in comparison, even though they held their own kind of radiance at this moment. The impression of the bewitched girl standing in the arms of a dangerous man was only enhanced by the delicate pink that tinted her cheeks. Lian willed her heartbeat to calm down. This was probably just another of his ploys. And what was she thinking? Getting her hopes up or something? Shut Up, rationality. I will enjoy this now. And later I can simply say I played along, right? Lian was not entirely convinced of her ability to lie right now, but she tried to focus on the task at hand. Shakily, she let out her breath and licked her suddenly dry lips again. She felt horrible for ruining this moment. How she wished to simply say yes! “I am afraid your unsophisticated dancing partner does not know how to dance...”, her voice was sad and to her own annoyance slightly breathy. |

Though he was as of now slightly out of his element, someone used to social environments, to read the interlocutor, someone like that would easily tell that the mood around the girl had changed. It was intense, subtle and thrilling. He had a few ideas on the cause. He wasn't sure it was proper to even think of half of them. He silently cursed his own stupidity at allowing her to be this close. He didn't think it would have such an effect and clearly, she was at least partially enjoying the contact if he had to judge from the way her hand almost instantly placed itself on his shoulder. He was taller so her arm had to be stretched up, and that only made him feel like he was taking advantage of her even more. So? Like we haven't taken advantage of people before. Right. He shouldn't bother with a moral compass at this point. If she was drawing pleasure from this almost intimate contact, then so be it. Besides, it was at least somewhat enjoyable for him. Well, maybe outright so. He felt his mind's flutter settle down, his heartbeat return to its normal rythm. Yes, he had to be in control of the situation. No reason in particular, he just had to be. She licked her lips, and a light shade of pink he hadn't noticed before was settled on her cheeks. Was she doing this on purpose? Was this what father called the art of womanly guiles? Oh, so it was a challenge then. Very well... "I am afraid your unsophisticated dancing partner does not know how to dance." "Let me teach you then." At that time, their stomachs grazed against each other when he gently pulled her towards him and started slowly and rythically spinning them both in circles. The touch of the dress' fabric. He could've sworn he was able to feel it and what lay under it. It sent a jolt of something like anticipation throughout his spine and he turned a slight gasp into a sigh as he smiled. "It's a lot like reading a book. You must feel the context and the character of your partner. And then you act on it." He lowered his voice just slightly. "Your body will tell you the rest." |

Lian was not sure if she wanted to know how to dance, not if it included being this private with someone. The tone of Kaynes voice had turned somewhat dangerous to her, but she was trapped right then and there, and her only choice was to go along and try it. Also, she had not forgotten his announcement of a second game. So if this was his game, she would not back down from it and take the challenge! Though this was easier said than done in her current state, flustered and aware of the fact her dancing partner was a good looking young man. With great effort, Lian tore her eyes from his. For a moment she wondered if his words were deliberately as suggestive as they sounded or if she just perceived them like that right now? And was his voice not darker than before? He must not be a Vampire, but an Incubus, she thought. Her cheeks felt like they would burst into flames any moment now and she vowed to leave her secret stack of books under the bed for some time now. It was doing weird things with her brain it seemed. In an attempt to clear her head, the girl focused on his movements with almost scientific interest, trying her best to keep up with it. That way she could ignore the way their bodies barely brushed every now and then. So, the blackhead swallowed, concentrated and carefully followed his lead. Thankfully, this helped her forget her embarrassment and calm her body down to the point where she didn´t blush anymore. She looked down at what his feet were doing and adjusted her steps to it. He was moving at a slow pace for her sake, and it started out rather promising, she began to see the pattern. It was actually fun, she thought with a small smile, before she stumbled a little. Cobolds! “I´m sorry...” Her brows furrowed in the effort to not make another mistake, but considering this was her first close dance and as she was unused to body contact like this, it was hard for her. After clumsily bumping against him several times, she started tensing up again. This was not good, she was supposed to learn it quickly and smoothly dance with him like a real lady, to impress him and show him she was capable. Frustration and shame at her own failure bubbled up within her and she bit her lip to contain it from breaking out. She kept her face straight, but her stomach started churning a little. “P-pardon me...” She mumbled demurely, avoiding his eyes. Cursing inwardly at her inability, the girl let her attention slip for a second. Lian didn´t want to leave a bad impression... It was important that she knew those things, why had she never thought of taking lesssons before? Kayne must think she was some uncivilised - She only felt her foot landing badly, then giving way and suddenly she was falling. The scene played out like a slow-motion film, as the girl cried out and in an attempt to catch herself reached out for what was closest, which turned out to be Kayne unsurprisingly. A jolt of utter humiliation made her eyes shoot up to him and her face blanch as she realized what was happening. Her hands tangled in his shirt as she crashed right into him, not with much force, but enough to bring their bodies together. |
