She stumbled once. He pretended not to notice it, but the grip on her hand became slightly tighter just in case. The two figures kept waltzing around the fantasy garden for instants before she did it again, and again. Kayne smiled a bit. It wasn't entirely enjoyment from seeing her fail, it had more to do with the fact she kept trying. Someone else would've excused herself and given up to save face. No, she was staying and trying. Wasn't that something... "Ah!" He felt something hard and flat hit his back in several places. He realized it was the stone path and that he was laying on his back. He also realized Lian was laying on top of him. Her body felt both warm, fragile and invigorating. Though he had propped his torso up and was resting on his elbows, he still couldn't fully rise with her on top of him. Her dressed had moved slightly from the sudden fall, revealing more of her leg, and he diverted his eyes to the side before he could see something that would offend her. Though his skin was as pale as ever, he could've sworn his cheeks were burning up. If someone walked in, the misinterpretation would be immediate. Even one of her legs was tangled with his, and though he wasn't looking he could still feel - or imagine he could feel - every detail of her body against his, her soft and smooth skin, the curves it drew and where the softest spots lied. As for himself, he didn't possess a remarkably toned body, but a lean and firm one. His practice of swordsmanship had kept him lithe and his considerable height made his structure somewhat more solid. Even though layers of clothes sepatared them, such things as the tenderness of flesh wouldn't go unnoticed by either of them. Things were getting a bit too personal. "Don't worry, it was an accident. This happened to me once or twice. Nothing to fret about." Something in his tone revealed he wasn't exactly keeping his cool. |

For a few heartbeats there was silence in the darkness. And the night covering the boy and girl lying on the ground seemed to have deepened, blinding the vision but bittersweetly enhancing all other senses. The touch. The smell. The taste. Through the crinkled fabric of his shirt Lian felt Kaynes firm muscles beneath her fingers. Her body was pressed against his, if only from her weight and Lady Gravity. It was a pleassant feeling. Her skin raised in goosebumps at the cool night wind brushing over her warm flesh. She was dizzy. So close. He was so close. With every breath she seemed to take in a haze of his scent, spicy and foreign, alluring her, clouding her mind. He was still taller than her even in this position. But if she leaned forward now, she could easily... No! Thank the heavens it was so dark, her eyelids were oddly heavy and her delicate lips slightly open. Somehow Kaynes suit coat had opened, somehow Lian had ended up supporting her weight on his chest, somehow her leg was tangled with his, somehow she couldn´t think clearly, somehow it was hard to recover her breath. Somehow his voice sounded strained, if ever so slightly, and this made her snap out of it. It was too much. Lian didn´t want to think about where exactly her leg was or why he wasn´t pushing her off or what the norns wanted to achieve by this scene or if this was part of his game or why she felt pained at that thought. In a sudden, almost violent outburst, the girl pushed herself off of her partner, scrambled to get to her feet and away and brushed her dress off with shaky fingers. Her shoulders were rigid, her jaw clenched and her head held low. She dared not look at him when she replied with a trembling voice. “Please accept my apology. This was an unacceptable occurence.” It was unclear if she meant the accident or... ssomething else. Lian tried to keep up her calm, polite facade but it was slipping. A faux-pas of huge proportions, pure humiliation. She had brought disgrace upon herself, this was surely a punishment sent by the heavens for something she had done. “I´m a failure...”, she whispered to herself. And not only that, the improper thoughts that still lingered in her mind were entirely unreasonable. Her Ancestors would be ashamed of her promiscuous behaviour. Once again, she was completely lost, confused and in emotional turmoil. Insecure, the petite girl made a step towards the gate. Then she turned to Kayne and bowed her head as farewell. “I think it is time I should leave. Thank you for your time.” Like clockwork, her manners took over her body for her once again before she turned around and all but ran out of the magical gate she had appreciated so before, her short hair fluttering around her face like the wings of a black butterfly. |

Everything happened so fast, and his mind felt sluggish. When she pushed herself away it almost felt like she had somehow cut an umbilical cord that connected them both, and it felt cold. He actually realized how cold of a night this was, and how tired he was becoming both physically and mentally. He heard her apologize, chastisise herself and then flee. He looked a bit stunned ant caught his forehead on his palm. Well, this was it wasn't it? That's as far as fun went. But you don't want her to go away do you? He almost jumped to his feet and started chasing after her. What was he doing? For what reason? There was nothing to be gained. The game of teasing was over. So what was the reason he felt compelled to chase after her? Ah. Perhaps he didn't want her to fear him? Such an infantile, sappy and simple thought as that wouldn't have crossed his mind before. But maybe just for once, he should allow himself to think like a commoner. After all, it takes one to know one, right? Their footsteps echoed and for a while he could only see her distantly, her hair fluttering against the wind. But soon enough he hastened his sprint until he caught her wrist. "Stop." He swallowed. "Please." It took him a couple seconds to realize he was apologizing unnecessarily but carried on anyway. "It was an accident. I didn't mean that to happen. You may hate me for it, but I want you to know that. Don't..." A small breath of wind carried the distant sound of leaves and crickets. A bit of moonlight illuminated half his face, leaving the other half in darkness. This time, only one green hue could be seen. "Don't fear me." |

Running always made her feel good. To feel the wind in your hair, to sense the rush of blood and adrenaline... Her head was clearing a little on her retreat from the small garden and she wished not for the first time she could simply take a hop and fly away. Her mind began to wander, chasing away the bad thoughts and the humiliation, but then she heard him running behind her. It was useless, he was more trained (she had gotten a pretty good impression of that back there) and had longer legs. Within very little time he had caught up with her and reached for her wrist. The girl jerked around from the sudden motion, coming to a halt abruptly. Her hair was completely dissheveled and she was breathing heavy from the run. She stared at her captor with damp eyes, blinking a little to keep her cool. She cursed herself again for her low Stamina. Lian indeed felt and looked like a rabbit caught in a corner, but she lifted her head a little when she heard him apologize. He sounded agitated, and she had never in their short time together gotten a more honest impression of him. He almost stumbled over his words and even took the blame for her mistake. He was not angry at her it seemed, and it had not been part of his games. She was sure of that now. So she turned around fully to him and swallowed to clear her throat. It pained her to hear him think she was afraid of him for her own misbehaviour. Somehow she was a little glad he had caught her now. "The only thing I fear is what you think of me.", she admitted in a small voice. "And that you will tell all of your sophisticated friends what an uncivilised, brutish, clumsy girl you met. That they will laugh at me and hate me." She would go to school each day in horror and fear, like in her old 'home'. She would be the laughingstock. She would never fit in. Her wild imagination sparked at that thought and she quickly raised her hand to wipe the unshed tears. Not that it mattered at this point. She looked like a mess already, with a wrinkled dress, unruly hair and red spots on her cheeks from the action. "I-if you would do something to me", which she doubted after this fairytale chase, but it was better to be safe than sorry. The girl gave him an apologetical glance, trying to show Kayne she did not want to intimidate him or anything. It was simply how it would happen. "My father would chase you down and bring justice upon you. And my brother -" Lians voice gained more confidence in that sentence and she even smiled a little. Her father would, she was sure. And if her brother got a hold of him before that... She took a deep breath and timidly looked up into his half-shadowed face. How she wanted to believe that he was different! "No, I don´t fear you doing something to me one way or the other. I fear being rejected a-and alone." Lian let her eyes fall down to the ground again and bit on her lower lip. |

His eyes narrowed slightly at her first words. So she did fear him. At least her fear had a definite cause but still, he couldn't help but be bothered by it. Unlike the satisfaction he experienced from being feared and respected by others, it wasn't exactly pleasant for Lian to think of him as someone to whom she was accountable. Sappy as it was, he admitted then and there that the girl's company eased him. He noticed the chase had mesed up her hair, her dress. He extended his hand but stopped since he realized that for the chinese, something like arranging her hair was considered intimate. So he retracted his hand and instead took off his jacket, placing it on her. It was the gentlemanly thing to do. "Well, I think you worry too much. If you bothered me I would tell you." He had to chuckle slightly at her comment about a family vendetta should he ever attempt to tarnish her honor. He silently thought about an angered father and brother trying to storm the mansion and being faced with security, the twins and Tokisada. He made it a point to keep good relations with the family if they ever got acquainted. He put his hands on her shoulders, whispering with a somewhat mischievous smile. So she didn't fear what he might do to her, but what he thought of her. Had he been a less decent man, the implications would flood his mind. "Who do you take me for, Fei? A satyr?" He smiled. A hint of canines showed, but it was becoming more and more of a familiar feature of his smiles. "I thought we had agreed on vampire for the time being. Or perhaps you've changed your mind about that?" |

After opening her thoughts like that, Lian felt especially vulnerable and for a second chided herself for being this honest with someone she barely knew. Now that he knew her fears, Kayne could easily take advantage of that. Anxiously, she watched for his reaction and tried to determine whether he was angry or maybe even satisfied. She had to be prepared for anything. His gaze was hard to read but it seemed he was troubled by her answer. The reason for that, she could not fathom, but it was not the sneer she had expected and that relieved her. She wondered what he was thinking right now. Once again, she was surprised at his gentlemanly behaviour that seemed to come naturally, but was not as stiff or cold as on their first meeting. The warmth of the jacket on her shoulders made her realize how cool the night had gotten. Gratefully, she held it and pulled it a little closer around her body. His words warmed her just as much as the cloth, but from the inside instead. The honesty she could make out in his voice washed away her concerns, even though she was still a little doubtful - if only because she didn´t know Kayne very well yet and because she had the feeling he was not as honest with others. Why would he make an exception for her? "Thank you..." she said in a small voice. Receiving such kindness after such a huge messup made her feel inferior again. Why did she have to be so clumsy at times? Meekly, she closed her eyes and enjoyed the rest of his scent on the jacket. The unforseen feeling of his hands on her shoulders made her jump a little. Did he enjoy body contact that much? It usually made her feel uncomfortable, but if she thought back to the earlier scene, it was not nearly as bad as that. It seemed he was simply back to being playful. Regardless, she blushed at the proximity, especially in reference to a little while ago. "A- a satyr?!" that comment made her whirl around and widen her eyes, the blush crept down to her neck now. It was clear to her as the day what he was referring to. Suddenly she realized that her words had been rather... ambiguous, and Kayne must´ve taken it different than she had intended. Impressive that he knew enough about the creatures, but still... "I-I didn´t mean it like that, I mean, like, I meant... " She stared at him wide-eyed and wondered if he had wanted to provoke that reaction. So she took a deep breath and tried to calm down. It was not acceptable that she lose this round. The girl harrumphed in an attempt to come off as more serious and continued. "...Satyrs, as carefree, sometimes brutal nature spirits, embodiment of what the greek valued as mans qualities, strike me as a little too wild to fit your style." Which didn´t mean she was questioning Kaynes male qualities - but it was not safe to go down that road, so with a scholarly tone she continued. "The vampire, a devil in disguise of a nobleman, sophisticated and deadly at the same time - I don´t know you that well, but this is more suitable for the sly man I take you for." Not to mention his smile always reminded her of one - charms hiding threat, dark and mysterious but too mesmerizing to look away. Oh no, she was staring again. Her eyes glinted with contained mirth as she bantered along. "Besides you seem to have taken a liking to this attribution, Count Gravesworth. Why change it then? As long as you don´t really start biting people, there is no harm done." |

That devilish, mischievous smile of his glinted again in the darkness. His white row of teeth couldn't be missed. "Oho? So you think me not a brutish villain but a sophisticated one. Yet a villain nonetheless! You wound me, Fei. And here I though we could establish good relations after all. Alas the woes of a monster, to be forever misunderstood..." His voice and shakespearean impression was a blatant sign not only was he teasing her, he was actually making an attempt at humor. Haughty humor but humor nonetheless. The song of the crickets was the only thing he could hear for a while. He had never noticed how the moon could look so distant and yet its light so close. He also noticed that chivalry aside, he was starting to feel a bit cold. He put his hands in his pockets and gave her a meaningful look as he walked towards the first floor access to the library, opening it and holding the door. "Since we are already isolated and it is nightime, I suggest we enter a place where prying eyes won't misinterpret. Or where neither of us is cold. I assure you Fei, I don't plan on sucking your blood from your neck. Your mythology factoids interest me more for now." His canines once again present in the smile. He was clearly enjoying scaring and soothing her back and forth, the dynamic of it was almost cruel and playful at the same time. Like a predator toying with his prey. But there was no such sinister air. No, this was more like a battle of words and entendres, the likes of which he had had rare occurrences of and was now utterly enjoying. This girl was amusing in more ways than one. And now that he though about it, she was also very proper without being a doormat like so many other women. What was her secret? "I'm afraid you've befriended a very devious man. Devious, but honorable I assure you. Put up with my eccentricities and you'll find my friendship. I am not without gratitude. Now, tell me more about these vampires..." |

Lian first grinned, then giggled, then outright laughed at Kayne´s words, holding her hand up to her mouth in proper manners. He really was fun to be around. First interesting, and now fun too. Her eyes shone when she looked at him. “I did not mean to insult you, Gravesworth-shi. Who says I have condemned you? Maybe Vampires aren´t so bad after all?” Suddenly, she made a disgusted face and stuck out her tongue at nothing in particular. “Unless you glitter in the sunlight. Then I am afraid we will have no more contact.” Lian eyed him suspiciously for a second. Then, she smiled sweetly at him again, which came off as slightly creepy after such an outburst. Lian had strictly defined definitions of good quality books, as well as how far a myth could be tweaked for it to remain authentic. The girl shook her head in amazement at how easily the guy could make his words sound intimidating and lewd at the same time. It seemed she was getting accustomed to it, as she was neither nervous nor blushing. She was glad for that, since she still had that weird urge to prove herself to him. Lian curtsied at Kayne playfully before entering the library and walking ahead. Somehow, she was giddy – Kayne was interested in her mythologic knowledge? That was rare... It made her feel valued and for once she allowed her pride on this matter show. “Well, Count Gravesworth, I have never been friends with a vampire. I would assume they are a little eccentric, and since I am considered bizarre too... I would be honored to be called your friend.” A shy smile tugged at her lips and she lowered her head sheepishly at this development. Friends. That would be wonderful. She felt flattered that he would consider her such. To cover up her embarrassment/joy, she quickly slipped out of his jacket and neatly hung it on the wardrobe. The library was silent, save for their footsteps and the magical atmosphere it exuded made her smile. Rows of rows of bookshelves, ordered by subject made up the big hall and between the high shelves one could easily feel lost. The soft light from the windows didn´t make it any less eerie at this hour, but Lian saw no need to turn on the lamps. Fleet-footed she ran to her goal unerringly, a corner of the library where fantasy novels and fairytales stood. She stopped, took about one second to find what she had been looking for, and pulled out the book. “Vampires. Though many cultures have creatures with vampiric tendencies, the most famous myth comes from eastern europe, where a mass hysteria eventually led to people being accused of vampirism and being staked. Slavic pagan myths describe the vampire as an unclean soul that possessed a decomposing body and fed on the blood of the living in order to maintain its appearance.“ Such grim details... Lian shuddered in delight at the dark subject. It was a love-hate relationship for her, creepy but oh-so fascinating. She inclined her head thoughtfully before turning to Kayne beaming and presenting him the book she had picked. “However, the vampire as we know it today was heavily influenced by Bram Stokers Dracula. A 15th century romanian prince named Vlad the Impaler most possibly acted as a model for this Count Dracula, who shaped the image of the charismatic, sophisticated demon.” Lian paused, interested if he had read the book. It was a possibility, after all he seemed interested in classics, and this was about THE classic in fantasy literature... “In general, vampires are considered blood-sucking demons of the night, weak to sunlight and only killable with a stake through the heart." She left out other things like the aversion to garlic, as those were not consistent throughout the tales. A general overview seemed appropriate for now. "...is there more you would like to know? I can go into more detail, but I do not wish to bore you...” Uneasily, the girl bit on her lip. She felt self-conscious again and her dark eyes were on Kayne, a small frown on them, longing for approval. |

The empty library echoed with their steps. The aisles of tomes and bookshelves cast shadow over it and only the moonlight bathing the place from the window allowed them to see. He really should have turned on the light but right now preferred to watch the girl flutter around the place looking for books. She reminded him of a hummingbird and had to control himself not to smirk or chuckle at the thought. She pulled out a book and started reading it right away. He was certainly paying attention to her, but at the same time he watched the expressions on her face, the way she seemed to shiver at the thought of the monster and yet remained enthusiastically reading more and more. Was she...no, she couldn't be. Besides, it was improper to think such things in this context. He had to smile slightly when she said she would be honored to be his friend. Really, such irresponsible words. But almost immediately after that she switched her attention completely towards the lore of the vampires. Though he had asked her to tell him about them simply to have an excuse to enter a warmer room, he became impressed at how naturally the words left her lips and how easily she absorbed information about this subject. A subject that most people would call repulsive. He wanted to remark on it, maybe a small tease but the way she looked at him with her dark eyes so full of enthusiasm made him reconsider. "By all means, go on." For a second, he looked like he was going to let himself fall sitting on the floor but he landed rather nicely on a small padded chair near the first bookcase. It was hard enough to see in the dark, and the chair was black colored. Was the intense green of his eyes capable of seeing through darkness or was this just a rather proper affinity for shadowy places? He crossed his legs and placed his arms on the armrests at the sides. The way his location was cloaked by a layer darkness, how he seemed to melt into it except for a pair of emeralds glinting by the scarce moonlight while he smiled... If Lian had been convinced he was an actual vampire then and there, nobody in the world would've blamed her. His lips parted, and his voice echoed again ever so gentle and deadly. "I have to ask...how did a gentle and sweet first year such as yourself come to like tomes about such horrid creatures. I perform Taxidermy, and I know this to be a gruesome task but still you could say it fits me. In your case it looks almost contradicting." For a second, one could've sworn the room's temperature dropped and every sound stopped existing. The air became hard to breathe in, as he took his time to give one final remark. "There is no way I can be bored with you, is there?" |

The darkness was a little too dark now it seemed. Where she had easily found the shelf she had been looking for, the blackhaired girl now felt a little lost when she realized she could barely see her partner. Insecurely, she stared at his eyes, trying to make out the rest of him. Well, it wouldn´t wonder her at this point if he really could melt into the shadows. Excited of the thought to really have befriended a vampire, she giggled a little. "Well, what´s more...", she mumbled to herself, weighing the book in her hands before turning her attention back to him and smiling at the indefinite darkness. Creepy, creepy. But her eyes were adapting and finally she could see at least his silhouette. The girl hummed while trying to think of more interesting facts about vampires. "Vampires are commonly depicted making other of their kindred by sucking their victim almost dry, then feeding them the vampires own blood. But there´s many more ways, as there are always lots and lots of different accounts for the same myth, making the subject even more interesting." Lian leaned back onto the side of the shelf, lost in thoughts for a moment. She took a breath before continueing. Of course it felt good to relay her thoughst to someone else, but she was unused to talk to others about this, so she felt a little awkward. "In china there is the Jiang Shi, a mindless reanimated corpse that absorb life essence from their victims. Some call them the chinese vampires, but I think they resemble zombies a lot more." An apologetic look was sent Kaynes way as she stopped short on that explanation. "If I turn on the light, I could read out some details, but everything else I have in my memory is just unorganized tidbids of information. At least related to vampires. And I don´t want to speak inaccurate." It was not the only subject she studied, so her knowlegde was limited, sadly. She had some great books at home, so if he really was interested... ah, but only if he really was interested. It would not go well if she assumed things. His question made her look up in confusion. Was that why everyone seemed to look down on her when she mentioned her hobby...? Because they thought it didn´t fit her? Was it such a contrast? Over these mullings it almost escaped her attention that he had just called her gentle and sweet. When she did catch on she was glad for the darkness. "Uhm...", the girl tried to word her sentence diplomatically, as she didn´t want to sound impolite. "Taxidermy in itself does sound a little eerie, but as long as you don´t kill the animals just to make dolls out of them..." That was a touchy subject, Lian decided to change it quickly. "W-well as for this hobby... I´m just fascinated." Her eyes were barely visible in the dark, but she beamed at Kayne openly and her voice doubled over again. She had the tendency to speak fast about things that interested her. "The Mysterious, the Unknown, everything humanity thinks they have discovered just leaves behind the longing for more uncertainties. I think us humans long for Myths and Legends, for Secrets and things we can not understand. It makes life so much more interesting! And well... I just like getting the creeps. What a strange wording... in chinese it sounds completely different. I like the thrill of scary things, even though I hide behind a cushion when watching horror films." She laughed a little, embarrassed at her own weirdness. She couldn´t really describe it well, as she had never had the opportunity to. This was the first time someone had asked her such a thing, but Lian found she could talk to Kayne quite easily about this. Indecisive, Lian stood there for a moment, before awkwardly holding out the book she had been cradling closed the whole time. The golden letters on the cover glittered in a small ray of moonlight, reading 'Bram Stoker - Dracula' in a big, ancient looking font. The leather cover was worn, but still in good shape, and Lian was glad to see it was treated properly. In her voice a bit of her insecurity echoed now. "I can really recommend this novel. It is a little dark but delves into the depths of humanity - not to mention its thrilling." |

Kayne looked at the book in her hand, then at her. Slowly, he reached towards it. His fingers made contact with hers when the exchange took place and once again there was a small sensation of electric spiking when it happened. But then again, maybe it was just the difference in body temperatures. Still, the sensation lingered. Now that he though about it, it wasn't entirely unpleasant. "Thank you. I am not used to being handed things, so forgive me if I come off as rude." He looked at the book on his hand, running his fingers over the cover as such a thing would tell him more about its contents. He turned it around and finally placed it at rest on his lap. "Unfortunately, I can't take this copy out of the library since there is no register of it and it is school property. But the gesture is much appreciated. I will have a copy purchased when I return home." He chuckled discretely at the girl's attempt of sharing her hobby. Clumsy, but very noble. At the very least, he should offer some of his insight. And so he did "Vampires are alluring because the prospect of immortality and eternal beauty has tempted people since time immemorial. The concept of a noble demon, a seductive predator, has existed before it was codified into the character of Dracula. Succubi, Incubi, Nymphs...regardless of culture humans always idealize their desires and ambitions into external agents. But it intrigues me. Because in a way, it means that we wish to fulfil our desires at their fullest without properly identifying them as our own. If a man is unfaithful, he was seduced by a succubus. If a woman is lustful, she is a devil's concubine. Such notions have been present since the middle ages and yet, they remain to this day in different forms." His voice was, for some moments, the only sound in the room. And while he wasn't saying something particularily unsettling, his gaze had somehow become that much sharper even though it hadn't noticeably changed. His cheek was resting on his fist. "And yet here you are, looking at possibly the biggest display of cynism mankind has ever had with a dreamy smile. You look at the monsters but do not recoil. You are instead intrigued by their nature, drawn to them because instead of the basic animal response of hating what is different from you, you seek to understand it. I have to wonder if that is the only reason we are here right now. If I am the monster you are intrigued by...a specimen for your collection." His eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly. He smiled. "Or maybe I am reading too much into the situation. Or maybe I just enjoy watching you explain yourself. Who knows, the self is a mystery after all..." |

For a heartbeat, Lian thought it was all going to be alright, wanted to smile at him and encourage him to read it, but in an instant, her face fell and her enthusiasm vanished. How silly of her. This was not Rockport library. It didn´t matter how often she had come here to read and look up in the vast hall, it was meaningless how much she felt at home there – you were not allowed to take the books out! How dumb must she look. Discomfiture colored her cheeks red, but her face was a little pained. “O-of course, excuse me, stupid mistake....” she mumbled, stood there for a moment awkwardly and then for lack of something better to do sat down on another dark chair next to Kayne. Cobolds, could she make even more a fool of herself this evening? Fortunately, the girl was pulled out of her self-hate when she caught on to what Kayne was saying. She turned her dark eyes to him attentively, listening with a serious expression on her face that seemed very out of place in such a cheery young girl. She nodded in agreement, actually quite impressed by his thoughts on the matter. “Maybe it is because we are scared? Scared of the truth and what it can bring?”, Lian asked thoughtfully, glancing at her partner. Kayne knew more on the subject than what she had given credit for, and the pang in her stomach was just another sign for her discomfort. “You could have said you were knowledgeable on this topic.”, she said icily. She felt hurt. Had he just tried to test her again? And here she thought he had been genuinely interested – while he just watched her and prepared for a speech like this. A deep, psychological thing he might think she wouldn´t understand. And how did he turn everything around so that it made her look bad? She didn´t even know exactly in what way she felt like she had done something wrong, but it did seem he was accusing her of something. A defiant frown formed on her delicate face. She didn´t like being called out like that on her hobby. Sweetly, she tried to counter his assault, that seemed less like a game and more like war at this point. Her eyes were narrowed a little and she noticed he was considerably more serious too. “The truth is something quite a few people can´t handle. Sharper than a shard of broken mirror, colder than arctic ice, this powerful thing has proven to be dangerous in mankinds history. It is easier on the mind, and easier on the conscience to hide your own personal truths behind a mask. This mask may have been demonic posssession, trickery or magic in earlier times, today it might be something entirely different. A cheery facade to keep people from prying into your life. A smile to hide your true thoughts.” She wondered for a moment if this was safe, as she didn´t really want to anger him, but she felt oddly triumphant and couldn´t keep herself from saying it. “Or the impression of a true gentleman, noble and charming, to hide the manipulative nature, the joy at playing with others thoughts and emotions. I wonder, what truth do you fear?” The girl sitting in the dark never relaxed for a second, watching Kayne head on. Just like an afterthought, she added something with a sharp voice, laden with offend at his implications. “To even get the notion I consider you a... collectible shows you are not nearly as good at this game as you think! You don´t know me.” First he had offered her to be friends, to now turn around and attack her like that. Had he not realized she had not even talked about this vampire stuff until he had mentioned it? She had looked forward to meeting the first person that seemed different from all the other shapeless, boring students again, to spend time with him and get to know him better. Instead, this had turned out to be a very tumultuous evening, and Lian still had enjoyed herself until now. What kind of view did he have on humanity if he assumed such a thing of her? Lian considered leaving for real this time, it was late after all. But she had wanted to watch the fireworks and it was not yet time. So the girl glared daggers at Kayne, then grasped for the novel, got up and despite her unusally firey mood carefully placed it back where it belonged. |

Her anger, the way she looked hurt and offended that he would play with her like this...Kayne Gravesworth looked at her intently. One could've called him insensitive for looking at such a sweet girl become to angry without so much as batting an eyelash. He heard her speak about the truth. Her words reached him, yes, but did they stay on his mind or did they just pass like wind? Was he actually just playing with her even more? No. He was standing up and suddenly, it became evident his gaze wasn't as sharp or distant as it had been. Rather, when he stood between her and the door he had something resembling warmth in his eyes. It was a sensation so alien, so utterly strange to see in him, that for a second people could've sworn this person wasn't Kayne Gravesworth at all. "You are right. People prefer beautiful lies over harsh truths. I think that little concept defines what you think of me right now. But you are wrong too." He stepped closer, then past her, and gently took the book from the bookcase, showing her the blurb at the back. Everything he had said about vampires was a word to word repetition of the actual blurb. He, however, didn't smile. In contrast to the way he was almost at least smirking this change looked very drastic. "Yes, I may have truths to hide. But I never actually assumed I knew you. I do not. I have no idea how your mind works. I see you and I can't begin to understand why you do what you do, and what for. And that is why...I wanted to talk to you. And I didn't expect much of you. Who could? I didn't know you and I am used to people approaching me for my name rather than my person. I do not resent this. But I didn't expect you to play along for so long." He turned around and looked her dead in the eyes. The fact that they were two lonely figures in the library became even more appearent. "I toy with people. Yes. But they often bend to the pressure and simply quit. You keep playing. You keep trying. And that...is something I can't overlook. Because you may just be someone I can talk to. Because you see the vampire and don't run away or get allured. In short: You may hate me if you want. But you have my respect. The world is full of idiots. Good to know you aren't one of them." In the distance, the fireworks lit up the sky. The colorful lights bathed the library in lights and shadows. And for a second, the scene looked soothing and maybe, just maybe... A shriek. And another. Kayne turned his eyes towards the window as a buzz in his pocket revealed the existence of a phone. He took it out and listened. His eyes narrowed when he heard the voice relay the message in the dead silence of the library. Lian would easily hear it. ''Yo boss, we need to get you outta there. Corpse has been found in the campus. There's a murderer running about.'' |

Lian was not yet ready to shake her irritation, so she just huffed at Kaynes words. She had all right in the world to be a little angry, right? And partly, he was right: She did view his act as a beautiful lie – but she was not sure about the truth that lay below. The only thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to know more about it. Reluctantly, she looked at the text and made the connection rather quick. He had sharp eyes if he could read in such obscurity. And somehow this relevation lifted her mood a little – her position had not been threatened after all. Lian was proud of her knowledge, as it was about the only defining trait she saw in herself. When she raised her eyes to meet his, she was taken aback by the soft look in them. He looked like a completely different person, open, interested, friendly. Lian wondered for a moment how many others had seen him like this apart from her. With a slightly annoyed sigh, she turned to look away from him. It embarrassed her a little... All this time she had been open, but on guard, he had kept up his mask, and now he showed himself so unbound that she did not know how to react to it. It did not help that those shining green eyes had more effect on her than she would accept. The girl simply couldn´t stay mad long when he surprised her every moment with another change of pace. “It seems we are attracted by similar things. You are a mystery to me. And I can´t deny mysteries fascinate me... Maybe we can learn a little from each other. It is humans greatest purpose to strive for advancement after all.” And yeah, curiosity. But she was not going to say that out loud. She turned back around and shyly looked past him. The praise in his voice made her both giddy and meek at the same time. “...I don´t hate you. And uhm... thank you.” a warm feeling in her chest made her smile widen and her eyes soften, but she did not want to think about it further. She also realized she was a little curt, but she was a little too overwhelmed by the whole situation at this moment. She suddenly realized how close he stood again. Her breath hitched when she looked at his handsome face, so much more approachable than before. Why was her heart beating faster? The situation had barely changed. Suddenly, Lian heard a distant whistle and shifted her attention just in time to see the first firework rise into the air outside. Excited, she ran up to the window and looked into the dark air, where soon the most beautiful flowers and stars made out of pure light graced the night. The girl beamed at the sheer breathtaking view and enjoyed the short moment of peace before - Screams. They did not sound like the sounds an elated mass did – rather like there was hysteria spreading. Confused Lian sought Kaynes attention and saw him taking out a phone. “C-corpse? A corpse on campus?” She whispered in horror. The girls eyes shot open and she blanched. Outside, she could now hear agitated shouts, seemingly trying to bring everything back in order. Lian was scared, she erratically looked around the dark library, wondering if they were not as alone as they thought. She hurried back to Kayne, in whose presence she suddenly felt way more safe and pleaded at him. “Murderer? What is going on?! We, we have to get out! What if he is still here somewhere?! Did they call the police yet?” Clsoe to a panic, she grabbed the boys free hand with both of hers, unsure if she needed the comfort or if she wanted to urge him to flee. |

He did register the girl's fear and necessity of protection. It was easy to guess why: Up until then, the desolated library had offered privacy. But right now, it made them likely to be attacked by an unknown assailant. Silently and trying to make it go unnoticed, he reached inside his jacket and flicked open a small apparatus no bigger than an eraser. He pressed the small button on it and then put it back again. "I will have my bodyguards drive us home. We should get going." With both of her hands still attached to his, he walked towards the exit. He then took out his cellphone with his free hand and put it to his ear. He wasn't actually calling anyone but an attacker would at least reconsider assaulting someone who was currently in communication to the outside. His face remained eerily calm, almost indifferent. A murder in the school. Such a bizarre event. It didn't terrify him, or actually cause uneasiness. To him, it was absolutely none of his business and meddling in, even asking about it would prove to be a hassle. And yet, he couldn't hide he turmoil at the bottom of his gut. A feeling like some sort of beast thrashing inside him, it sent a strange taste to his mouth and made his senses aware of his surroundings. It wasn't fear, his distress signal would ensure the twins found him in record time. It wasn't fear for the girl either, not that he wasn't concerned about her. He just wasn't the type to give in to emotions as far as he remembered life. If anything, it all played out like a parade he was looking at from afar. Then what was it? Something interesting is happening. Such a thought was morbid at best. To consider the death of a student something akin to a hobby, a puzzle. But it allured him. The how, the why, the what. He felt like some rare type of game was taking place, and that should he choose to participate it would allow him to enjoy new experiences, new sensations, to exert every mental capability he could muster in order to- In order to what? You don't care about the victim. Or the criminal. Or safety, for that matter. But...it would be so amusing to see it play out first hand, wouldn't it? A perverse excitement ran up his spine as they both exited the hallway and walked towards the parking lot where a distant limousine was already turning on the engine. He wasn't aware of the sinister hint of a smile in his face, or how his eyes had widened into a gaze of twisted wonder. There was a crowd some meters away but they were so utterly focused looking at a pair of students being taken away that they didn't pay any heed to them. "Well damn boss, someone made a friend. Do we take her to the mansion or-" "We will be taking her home. Then we head to the mansion. Provide us with some silence if you'd be so kind." The asian man was young, had a shaved head and a dragon tattoo all over it. He was also dressed in a black business suit that seemed very unfitting for someone with such a wild appearance. He smirked and bowed in acknowledgement while an identical man waited inside the car on the driver's seat, obendiently waiting for his master to board. The loud twin opened the co-pilot seat and buckled himself as Kayne took Lian inside the limo and closed the door for her. The car started and exited through the parking lot, the police officers who guarded it recognizing the plate and car immediately and moving aside to let them pass. And for a second, Kayne Gravesworth sighed somewhat tiredly and gazed out to the outside from his window And something inside him lit up like a fuse. It was nothing but an instant, a split second. The police car taking the students into custody passed right by their side, and his eyes caught sight of a younger student sitting at the back seat. He had brown skin, grey eyes, black and messy hair and a look of restrained contempt on him. He was by all means, someone he would never associate with. He didn't even have time to notice more of his features but he felt his nerves catch fire as his eyes widened into something like surprise. He felt sick at the sight of him. He felt bile forming in his throat, a need to remove that boy from his sights should they ever cross paths. He hated him. It was an irrational thing, something completely out of character. It wasn't even his appearance what triggered such a response, it was the simple fact that looking at him had felt like opening a can of worms. It felt alien and out of place. He hated him and he didn't have a reason to. But he didn't need one. He hated that boy and that's how things had to be... That's how they were MEANT to be. Were they? He noticed his hand gripping something soft and warm. He immediately retracted his hand from Lian's as soon as he noticed he might've hurt her. The sight of her made him regain his senses, somewhat. "I'm very sorry. It seems I could not remain as serene as I should've. Are you alright?" |
