Lian was glad for how calm Kayne was in this situation. It wouldn´t have been good if both of them were panicked. For the sake of not making a bad impression the girl tried to take a deep breath and keep her head clear. If he was this composed she should at least try and calm down too. For a moment she wondered at the term bodyguard, but that only sounded promisingly safe at this time, so she didn´t ask and instead just nodded and went along with him. Outside the terrible noise of a disaster was upon them. Screaming, crying, running, and their own hurried steps enhanced the great discord too. It seemed horrible. All those that had come to enjoy theirselves, to have fun and dance, they were so brutally shaken from the happiness of the moment. Fear and panic were blank on the faces of those they passed. Lian frantically looked around, scanning the masses of students, teachers and policemen, without watching where she was going. When Kayne stopped at the limousine, Lian gave him a short glance before turning back to – was he smiling?! The girl whipped her head back but the dark expression she had seen for a moment had all but dissipated as he was talking to what seemed to be his bodyguard. Lian gave a short, curt bow to the chinese man and wondered at the mismatch of the business suit and the dragon tattoo. It was a pretty tattoo. She gave one last glance behind her, almost giving up on it. “Xiaonu!” a shout was heard from the crowd surrounding the police car. Lian broke the contact with Kayne and ran towards the man that had called her. A tall, broad-shouldered man of obvious asian descent spread out his arms as the girl ran into his embrace. He had tears in his eyes as he hugged her to his chest and whispered consoling phrases. Lian was so relieved to see him she couldn´t bring out a word. “Xiaonu, my Lian, I´m so glad you are safe. When I heard the call I was desperate. But you´re alright, you´re alright...” After a moment he let her go and gave her a good look over to see if something was wrong. But since he was a man, he didn´t recognize the dark spost on her dress as worriable things and nodded after scrutinising her. “Father, what happened? Did you get those that did this?” Lians fear was still audible in her voice but she didn´t look as pale anymore. Her father was strong. He wouldn´t let anything happen to her. “We have suspects, but that is far from anything really.” The man sighed, ruffled her head comfortingly and looked at the mass of people behind them. “Do not worry. I have to go now, you can sit in my car and wait for me if you...” Lian quietly shook her head and motioned to Kayne who was still standing beside the Limousine. "He offered to bring me home. ...please, I want to go home..." It took the man about half a second to turn from loving, worried father to... well, still loving, worried father. Fei Wens gaze hardened. In two big steps he was in front of that boy who wanted to take HIS daughter away. His gaze was cold as he silently judged Kayne from behind small rectangular glasses, the grey eyes piercing. The officers badge on his white uniform blinked in the erratic lights. “Mr. Fei?” Someone called from the police car. The man grumbled in annoyance, something that sounded like 'I have no time for this', then simply told Kayne: “...No stopovers.” He could not find any signs of immediate danger from the boy, though he was not really convinced yet. Also, his wife always chided him for not trusting his daughters enough. Mr. Fei turned around, gave Lian a kiss on the forehead and returned to his duties. Lian let out a relieved sigh, then hurried into the car. She didn´t want to stay here any longer. She smiled apologetically to Kayne and leaned back in the thick seats. Her heart was still beating a little from the shock, but it died down to allow her some clearer thinking. A hard squeeze on her hand turned her attention to Kayne. He seemed to have noticed his slip-up and instantly withdrew his hand – which made Lian a little sad. In response to his question, she took a deep breath and nodded. “I think so... It must be bad if they called so much police.” She shuddered a little and looked outside through the car windows. The darkness outside made her appreciate the warmth and safety of the limousine even more. She had never been in one before. “I´m just glad I didn´t see whatever made all those girls faint and cry...” she mumbled. Her eyes turned thoughtful when she looked back at him, trying to voice her mind. Now that she had calmed down, her natural curiosity was piqued again. Something so horrible happening at her new school... “What happened..? I wish I knew... But father will not tell me anything.”, the girl huffed her cheeks in annoyance, but deep down she was glad he wanted to protect her from the horrors of his job. “Was it manslaughter? Was it murder? How did they find suspects so fast? And what if they aren´t the murderers, is the real culprit still around...?” She looked at Kayne as if he could answer her questions. She knew he wouldn´t but she wanted to hear his opinion, maybe talking about it rationally would make it less horrifying. |

Kayne's eyes lingered on the window for one more instant before finally closing as he let his back rest on the leather seat. His hand ran through his hair and he he breathed deep. The limousine's sound-isolating properties turned the noisy streets into an almost imperceptible murmur. A polarized window was the only indication there existed a driver and co pilot. Right then and there, they were alone and it seemed the familiar atmosphere of his own limo had allowed Kayne to at least display some sort of very human stress. "There has been a murder and the killer is still free. There are some students who are being taken to interrogation from the looks of it. Goes to show the police doesn't have the faintest idea of what happened." He then remembered the stern asian man who confronted him earlier with a simple stare and a couple of words. "But of course, they will find the culprit soon enough. I suppose that officer was your father?" He couldn't help but smirk to himself at the thought of the protective man. It was amusing because he understood his point of view: Some older student had his daughter's hands on his, and was taking her away into a limousine in the middle of chaos. It was easy to pin that as a stereotypical teenage misconduct. And to be fair, had he been in his place, he would have thought the same thing. "It seems your father is a very serious man. Shame that we started off with the wrong foot. Maybe I should offer my respects some other time..." He chuckled a bit before a pause. "...What do you think about tonight, Fei?" |

Lians lips curved into a soft smile. So that guy was human after all. When he had so stoically taken the news and escorted her, she had wondered how he could stay so calm, but the situation had taken its toll on him anyway. She was glad to see he was not as strong as he seemed. She remembered that they´d need her adress to driver her home and uneasily told it to Kayne – the drivers cabin was sealed off, so she wasn´t sure if the driver/bodyguard would hear her. Afterwards the girl hesitantly allowed herself to relax a little and closed her eyes. The cool leather felt smooth under her fingertips. It must have been quite expensive, as the whole limousine AND the bodyguard as well. Lian wondered about Kayne a little more. How could anyone be this rich and still be remotely normal? Well... Kayne was special, true, but obviously not stuck up or arrogant about his money. As far as she had seen. What he said confirmed her own worries. She knew enough about policework to recognize it almost never went as smooth or as exciting as in movies. “They still are only human as well.”, she answered easily to his comment. It was probably not meant as an insult, and such opinions were quite normal about an important job, especially in times of crisis. “I have faith in them, they are the only ones that can help in such a case.” Her eyelids fluttered open and the girl inclined her head towards him, almost smirking. “Don´t worry, he was too busy to chew you through properly. If you two meet again he will catch up on that. I wish he´d stop worrying so much...” A tint of sadness was in her voice as she thought back to how her father had changed after her brother left, focusing all of his protectiveness and love on his daughters. Suddenly, Lian had the distinct image of a stoic Kayne sitting awkwardly at the table in their apartment, her enthusiastic mother on one side, offering him more rice dumplings, her little sister on the other, asking why he was so stiff, and her father sitting across simply glaring at him over crossed arms. A bright giggle bubbled up in her chest and her face lit up at the thought – she quickly stifled her laugh with her hand but she couldn´t help but grin looking at the boy next to her. She would pay to see that. “Ah, tonight? Exciting.”, she answered, honesty toning down the grin into a smile. “Save for the bad surprise at the end, this was a beautiful evening. I loved the garden, I enjoyed talking to you. I hope you feel the same...” Subtly, she avoided talking about the dance, but her neck warmed when she remembered it and Lian swiftly averted her dark eyes from his emerald ones. She had been gazing longer into their depths than she had intended. “Y-you really should read Dracula...”, Lian finished weakly, embarrassed at her unsatisfying response. An awkward silence filled the car and the muted atmosphere inside made Lian realize how drowsy she was. Today had been fun, embarrassing, interesting, frightening, everything but boring. Enjoyable. The girl sighed and smiled with droopy eyes and at nothing in particular. A yawn escaped her and she dutifully raised her hand to hide it. The quiet was oddly comforting, as was the thought of safety after the horrible shock. The last thought that circled her mind before it fell into a daze was that she wanted to comment on the luxury, maybe even voice a cheeky taunt about the Count nickname in connection to this limousine, but her mouth didn´t comply. Her consciousness slowly drifted away after such a tiring evening, seeking solace in the darkness. Softly, her body slipped deeper into the leather and her head tipped to the side, coming to rest lightly on Kaynes shoulder. Somewhere between sleep and waking Lian dozed and her long, dark lashes fluttered against her cheek in what seemed to be a half-dream. With every long breath her delicate lips parted a little and her face radiated pure serenity. |

“Don´t worry, he was too busy to chew you through properly. If you two meet again he will catch up on that. I wish he´d stop worrying so much...” Well, that wasn't exactly a comforting thought but Kayne managed to fake a smile at it. Regardless of stature, having a doting father who happened to be a police officer put you in a black list was something even him would find troublesome. Not to mention it would be hard controlling the Twins if there was a police officer outright against them. But he shoved away the grim thoughts and instead listened to her comment on the night. He had of course, to chuckle in his mind when she commented on him, the garden, and how she enjoyed herself. She saw her body stiffening somewhat and knew the memory that crossed her mind when she averted his eyes. In a way, it was best that she did so since he wasn't exactly immune to the thought but she wouldn't be able to see his expression. That was a secret he was taking to the grave. "Y-you really should read Dracula." "At your insistence, next time we meet I will have done so." There was a silence that allowed him some solace to think. The pleasant thoughts of his night and the girl's presence started drifting away to make room for the gruesome tragedy that ended the Gala. Well, it wasn't all very tragic. After all he hadn't felt this surge of excitement in such a long time...he had to wonder if the thought of getting involved was imprudent after all. People would need to be kept calm, they would look upon their figures of leadership for security. So he could easily gather enough details and information t- No. He turned his head almost mechanically slow towards her, and saw her sleeping form laif against him, her head resting on his shoulder as the soundless vehicle advanced through the streets. No. No no no. No. He froze in place and remained stiff as the sleeping girl simply drifted away using him as a pillow. He has wishing Li would run into some bumps on the road so she would wake up without him taking action but for the first time in his life he cursed the excellent state of the city's traffic and highways. He turned away from her with an almost uncharacteristically confused face. He also did it to avoid getting caught in the scent of her black, silky short hair. It smelled floral and sweet, and unlike the women who threw themselves at him she was someone he planned to see again. He didn't want his mind to wander into thoughts that would make their next meeting awkward. Carefully and slowly, he placed his hand behind her back and the other on the back of her neck, trying to reposition her into her own side of the seat. In the process, her head turned back and exposed her neck, smooth and warm. He gave thanks that the girl was asleep because he wouldn't hear the end of it if she caught him staring at her neck while holding her lax body. He had to admit, it must've looked in such a way that 'vampire' was the only viable explanation. He noticed her little chest heaving slightly as she drew breath, and averted his eyes immediately. Still, it wasn't normal for a girl her age to simply fade out like that was it? He wondered if he could take her temperature. Now holding only her back with one arm, he brushed off some her from her neck with the other and placed two fingers on it to check her pulse- "Well shit boss, I didn't think you had it in ya." He hadn't noticed the car had stopped. The fine piece of machinery's door had opened nearly without a sound. Only now did he notice the asian bodyguard looking to the scene with a wild grin and knowing eyes while the other sibling simply stood a bit farther, arms behind his back and eyes closed in an attempt to provide privacy. He wasn't a religious man but her turned to the girl and hoped she would remain asleep two more seconds, the time it would take him to let go of her. |

The haze cleared from her mind as she heard someone call out, she couldn´t comprehend the words with some images of her dream still present, but there was something else that woke her fully. The unfamiliar feeling of a hand at her back, a slight pressure on her neck, right where her veins were – and suddenly Lians eyes flew open and stared right up into Kayne Gravesworth´s face. Why did he look so troubled...? If it didn´t seem so unlikely for the boy, Lian could have sworn that was panic she saw in his features. She blinked a few times and finally gathered the position they were in - His hand on her back! His fingers on her neck! His body bent over hers! Tooclosetooclosetooclose! Black eyes widened in shock and her mouth opened in a silent cry. Rapidly, rashly, almost violently, she freed herself from the surprisingly gentle grip, skidded to the other side of the car and crouched down against the door. Pushed herself away from him for the second time this evening. “Y-you!” she whispered, her voice cracked and pitched a little higher. Protectively, she placed a hand on her neck and stared at the dark boy whose green eyes pierced the night. Lian felt fear rise up cold in her throat, but the way he looked at her made her more insecure than scared. He, she.... Oh why was her mind not functioning properly? Her heart beat fast and her face heated up slightly. Her lower lip quivered. Just now she had thought he would... But would he have...? Or had he actually... Lian swallowed dryly and managed to find her voice again, a little louder this time. “What was that?! Did you... did you truly try to bite me?!” How could a small joke grow to such a bizarre scene? Was he... really a vampire...? Already was Lian going through the various methods of how to kill a demon of the night, but they all fell short at the availability: She was not christian so she had no cross, why would she bring garlic with her to a ball, holy water was not easy to get. When she noticed her own thoughts, the absurdity of the situation dawned on her. What was she thinking! Ridiculous! A nervous laugh made her face twitch into a grimace between comedy and tragedy and her fearful eyes watched for every move Kayne made and her thoughts were racing around her head and she didn´t know what to think. “S-stay away!”, she protested weakly. Powerless. Even if he was in fact not a vampire, he could have done anything he had wanted in this limousine. Lian cursed her own carelessness. |

What. The girl could have very well shrieked and her reaction would've had the exact same effect it just did. She looked like a mouse cornered by a cat while he just froze there trying to connect the ridiculous chain of events that led to this, a look on his face like that of a deer staring at bright lights. He shook his head amazingly fast for someone so usually composed and the stupid expression dissapeared. "What?! No, I wasn't about to bite you, I thought you passed out! Thus, checking your pulse in the jugular vein was the best way to determine proper blood flow and-" "You know, that's something an actual vampire would say boss. I mean you already have that freaky high class thing going o-" A quick judo chop to the head from his much more proper sibling put the twin back into line. Kayne tried approaching the cowering girl very slowly and with non-threatening motions. One would think he was trying to catch a squirrel, not talk to a high schooler. "It wasn't my intention! You fell asleep on me, there was literally nothing else I could think about at that point than to check your pulse!" "If I may, master." Finally, the more composed twin interjected without opening his eyes or moving from his very rigid posture. His voice was identical to his brother's but carried a much more serene tone. "I would be bold enough to suggest that the young lady is concerned about wether or not she still retains her honor after falling asleep in a strange limousine at the expense of a male. Not that you would engage in such vile conduct, but she may not think you as faithful." Kayne's handsome features were completely taken by a mix of confusion and embarrassment that verged on parody. He felt furious that he was being put into such a situation, explaining himself and doing poorly at it! He stepped out of the car and pointed at the location they were at. It was the suburbs, and they were parked at the front of a small apartment building. "I brought you home. There is literally no reason for me to take advantage of you, nor to...drink your blood regardless of what you think of me. I was concerned. It will not happen again." Wether he referred to the misunderstanding or his being concerned, he did not specify. |

Her pulse...? Lian you idiot. You god-forsaken idiot. The honest outburst of the boy in front of her brought Lian to her senses. With growing dread she realized she had acted quite stupidly. The look on his face was like a slap to her skull, it pained her to see him struggle for words, and the realization that he had in fact only cared for her was like a sting to her heart. In another situation she would have shown interest in Kaynes uncomposed demeanor, now it just filled her with a deep sadness and shame. The way one of his bodyguards laid out the situation made her face flush red, as it was not far from the other option she had considered him doing. You Fool! The girl buried her face in her hands for a moment, trying to calm down. Then she followed the boy out of the car, straightened her crinkled dress and modestly folded her hands. Even though her posture was upright, her head hung low and she avoided looking at either of the three, any mockery of her actions would not take well now. “Gravesworth-shi, I have to apologize for my behaviour yet again.” Her voice was small and reserved, but polite. “It was uncalled for and my only explanation is that after this long day sleep was clouding my judgement. ...in fact I had been dreaming of vampires...” Lians lips formed a thin line. That was it. Their intrigueing friendship had ended before it had really started. All because of her stupid obsession with such an absurd topic. She cursed herself inside. Her hands trembled a little. With a shaky breath the girl did an uncharacteristically deep bow before the young man she had insulted so. It was the best she could offer. “Please, even if you may not accept my apology, I want to thank you for the evening. And for bringing me home in this chaos. You were a perfect gentleman and I misunderstood so horribly...” Ignoring the violent churning of her stomach, she straightened and timidly looked up at Kayne. She was scared to see the rejection in his eyes. But she forced a smile unto her face that was worthy of being called a mask, it was gentle and friendly despite how she felt inside. Her belly retaliated. “I-if there is ever anything someone as I could help you with, I would be glad to, Gravesworth-shi.” He probably didn´t want to associate with her anymore. He would leave her behind and rightfully hate her. But maybe he had use for her talents one day. That way she could at least see him again... Why did the thought hurt so much? The girl bowed again, also to the two chinese men, whom she would have liked to know more about, but the opportunity had passed, she was unwelcome now. “Thanks...” Lian dared another look at Kayne that was filled with sadness, then she turned around and walked to the front door that lay in the shadows of the night. |

Kayne stood there and watched as the girl apologized, finally back to her senses. He was pleased that he was no longer seen as a predator but her mood swing suddenly turned her extremely apologetic yet again. It was getting hard to keep up with her. Was this actually his fault or was this how most younger girls behaved? In the department of manipulation he was pretty comfortable. Empathy was where he was utterly helpless and right now he couldn't think of a reason she would go back to being so apologetic, other than the fact that she had been wrong about him. The brash twin glanced at him and then at the girl, rising his chin twice towards her direction. Kayne raised an eyebrow at him but then got the message and turned towards the girl. "Wait." Realizing it had sounded like an order more than a request, he walked towards her himself. As he did, his eyes ran up and down the building. The whole thing wasn't bigger than one of the sections of the mansion. He had to wonder just how much space did the inhabitants have. "If you want to make up for it, I have something I'd want to do. Rather, somethin I would much prefer not to do alone." A smile again. But this one wasn't very soothing with his eyes looking like they were concealing something "I'm interested in the events that transpired tonight. Nothing too sinister I assure you, simple curiosity. After all I'm a senior in the school so its security concerns me. If you would ask your father about it we may talk next time we see each other at school. It would also be a good time to comment on Dracula." The way he was wording it made clear he wasn't being kind or generous but that he simply looked over the faux pas and said something he wanted to say anyway. "Besides, I think I offended you already in the library. Maybe this is just a way to restore equilibrium. But your neck looked specially tempting, Fei, I'd suggest you cover it in my presence." There it was again, the teasing and the hint of his canine on his smile. If anything this nature of his seemed incorregible. |

Tentatively, Lian turned around and listened to Kaynes request. He was a little bit more formal, but didn´t seem to be as flustered as before... Had she been overreacting again? A part of her wondered at his curiosity about the matter, but she didn´t want to make the situation even more awkward. Besides, curiosity was a drive she could understand wholeheartedly. "I... suppose I could do that." she answered, eyeing him out of a certain feeling of doubt. "But, as I said, Dad doesn´t like talking about his work, so I can´t guarantee results. I-I will try my best of course!" The girl fumbled a little with the hem of her dress. She felt shy again, scared to make another mistake. But Kayne appeared to be genuinely interested - for whatever reasons she couldn´t imagine, and so she took this agreement as a peace offer. At his teasing words, her hand flew to her neck in a defensive gesture, but she caught the mischief in his tone of voice and grin. She chuckled and cracked an uneasy smile herself. This little game was becoming endearing to her, she realized. And naturally, a cheeky comeback escaped her lips. "Well, Count Gravesworth... Next time we meet I will have a silver cross on me, so don´t get cocky." Her emotions settled down at this point and she had to yawn again. The girl blinked sleepily and then smiled up at Kayne. "...It seems I overthink things a little. I´m sorry for that." This apology was much more informal and was accompanied by a little sigh. She inclined her head as greeting and stifled another yawn, before signaling that she wanted to leave now. It was late after all, past midnight, and she was not used to stay up so late. "Good Night, Gravesworth-shi." |

"Sleep well." He say her dissapear into the apartment building and his smile did so too. He turned around and climbed inside the car once again. "Home." At his command, the twins returned to their seats and once again the limousine was in motion through the streets of Rockport. They could've been ghosts if the lack of sound was any indication, hardly ever stopping at something else than red lights. "She's a nice girl ain't she, boss?" A voice sounded on the intercom. The Li, the brash twin was once again overstepping his boundaries. Kayne's elbow was resting against the window, and his forehead was resting against his fist. His look was unamused and yet somehow polite. "She is intriguing. I have to wonder if she is everything I think she is." "Is that hope I hear, boss?" "Put on the Wagner playlist. And do not interrupt me any further." The car dissapeared into the distance, and a lingering scent of mystery left the air. |
