Lurking in the crowd; Yoshima, Kate, Maxina.

School had started recently and as Yoshima expected, Kate was also a student there, he'd spent the last few days avoiding her as best he could, constantly hiding, wether it was behind people, behind colums or even inside trashcans, it didn't matter, she could NOT see him. It could be worse, however, she could have been in his class, but thankfully she was a junior, and he was a sophomore.

It was a sunny day, the weather was perfect and the wind blew ever so slightly. Yoshima could always notice Kate around school because of how much her wheelchair stood out, he weaved through the crowd like a shadow, unseen.

That day, however, he failed and bumped into a man who seemed hawaiian, making noise and attracting some people's attention

"GUH! Sorry, about that," he apologised while looking back at where he'd last seen Kate... He might have been busted, not entirely sure. The blood in his body went up to his head as fast as you could say "We meet again", because that's what he expected Kate to say once she got to him. His face was red like a tomato again, he looked at the man he just bumped into and hid behind him.

"Listen, this may sound crazy, but I need you to pretend you know me and pretend we have plans for lunch, do you understand? If I have lunch with that girl I don't think my body will hold up!" He begged the other student.
(...)

He heard the sound of the wheels getting close and closer, or were those sounds only in his mind, haunting him?

NO! He had to keep trying, it was too soon to give up. He tried starting the conversation with the hawaiian guy, if his cover had been blow then he'd blow it all the way.

"Hey, uhhhh... You... Long time no see! Wanna have lunch today?" He said as loud as he could as if to make sure that if Kate heard him she would realise he had plans and go away.

It was a regular day full of regular things for Maxina Rasren, who was just heading down to the first floor during the lunch break, mostly to loiter with no discernible reason. This failed, however, when someone bumped directly into him, evidently having ran about the whole damn school like a headless chicken. Maxina was about to tell him off, even after he'd apologized...when the kid did something weird - namely, he moved behind Maxina as if trying to hide from someone. He began to explain, and once he'd finished, Maxina had only one thing to say.

"What? No, seriously, what?!" The hell was this kid on about? Clearly, he'd underestimated his own level of crazy. What girl was he talking about? Furthermore, what kind of man wouldn't go to lunch with a girl? Unless, like, the girl was a bitch, but even then, those Japanese cartoons went on about how bitchy girls were totally in. And this guy was clearly Japanese...he thought, at least. Therefore, he had to be gay! ...Wait, that was an even worse scenario, considering who he was talking to! As the boy kept going on about his inane "plan" or whatever, Maxina began to get progressively more pissed.

"What the fuck are you on about!? I don't even know you! Who the fuck is so terrifying that you have to piss yourself in fear, kid?!"

It was strange. For the last few days at school, Kate could swear she saw someone constantly running away from her. Every time she would go anywhere, one person always ended up fleeing. It was probably just all in her head but still, she couldn't shake off that strange feeling.

Now, the relatively peaceful atmosphere of the school was interrupted by some small commotion happening nearby. It seemed that someone had bumped into someone else. Looking closer however, the one who was bumped into was a certain long haired boy from Hawaii. And the one he was talking to also looked familiar... Wait... was that Yoshi? It would be nice to speak with the two of them again, so she started to approach them. They seemed to be shouting about something but she couldn't quite make it out.

When she got close enough to them, she could hear Yoshi say "Hey, uhhhh... You... Long time no see! Wanna have lunch today?". So the two knew each other? That's great! "Hi there Yoshi, Maxina! It's been a while since I've seen the two of you."

They seemed to be making plans for lunch... Maybe she could squeeze herself in? "Hey, do you two mind if I join in?" she asked the two.

"Hey, do you two mind if I join in?" Kate asked the two. Yoshima looked at her with a half smile, containing mostly fear than anything. A sweat drop ran down his face.

"H-H-Hey there... Fancy meeting you here, ehe-ehehe..." Yoshima said, his legs shaking.

Wait a second? Did she say Maxina? Could it be that Kate knew who this guy was? Apparently so, and it also seems that she wants to join in on the fake lunch plans with both of them, this was bad, but not SO bad, if Maxina were to agree then there'd be three people and therefore less awkward!

"Sure you can join us, Maxina would be delighted, wouldn't you, Maxi?" He winked at Maxina and gave him a horrible nickname, he prayed to god that Maxina was not the kind of person that walks around grumpy all day.

Well, seeing as how Kate knew him, there'd be no way Maxina could refuse, he may look like a big strong man, but nobody can say no to a lady like that, luck was on Yoshima's side that day, but how would he avoid her from then on?

Before the boy could even answer Maxina's question, someone spoke - The voice of Kurenai the Younger, to be precise. Maxina could've sworn the boy had some kind of tiny panic attack from his expression alone - Oh, Jesus, he wasn't...He wasn't afraid of Kurenai, was he? That...That conclusion actually made Maxina's head hurt a bit. He couldn't seriously be afraid of a little girl in a wheelchair, right? Right?

...Right?

As Maxina tried to process this, things got out of control, and eventually he snapped back to reality when the boy called him "Maxi". That got him to verbally retaliate.

"...You call me that again and I smack you into next week, Nintendo Horse." Maxina sighed after this and slumped his shoulders. "Well, I guess everyone's going to decide what I do today, so fine, I give up, we can do the lunch. (Even though I still don't know who this asshole is...) Well, you two are the ones who wanted to have lunch together in the first place, so surely you have some kind of plan as to where we're going, right?"

"H-H-Hey there... Fancy meeting you here, ehe-ehehe..." Yoshi said. He seemed far more nervous than before. Wonder why... Either way, it seemed that they didn't mind her joining in for lunch. Great! It seemed they wanted her to pick where they would have lunch. Maybe... "How about the roof? It's usually empty around lunch time so it would give us some peace." she said. Hopefully it wouldn't be a problem having lunch there.

The journey upstairs was a tad bit quiet. It seemed that nobody was really had much to talk about...

Perhaps Kate could break the ice though. "So, how did you two meet?" she asked them. It wasn't really much but at least it would give them something to talk about. After that, another question which was on Kate's mind popped up. "What have you been doing all week Yoshima? I didn't really see you all that much." she asked him. Although given his current state of mind, one must wonder if he could even reply properly...

They entered an elevator to get to the roof since Kate couldn't possibly climb stairs, the door closes and they go quiet for a while.

"So, how did you two meet?" Kate asked them.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh crap, busted. Yoshima stayed in silence for a while but then an idea occured to him, he wouldn't need to lie.
I guess you could say we just bumped into each other, he said with a confident smile, yes, that answer was perfect.

After he answered her question, Kate came up with another one.
"What have you been doing all week Yoshima? I didn't really see you all that much."
Could this elevator seriously be any slower? This time he was done for, or so he thought until another answer popped in his mind.
"I have been to different places in school, we probably just didn't catch each other or something like that..." Wow, what a half-assed response, he thought to himself.

The elevator's doors opened and the three of them sat down in the rooftop, the weather was pleasant, as expect of late summer/ early autumn. They sat down to eat their lunch and Yoshima opened his lunchbox. Tomatoes, only tomatoes. He was in such a hurry that morning that he grabbed downright anything to eat.
"Uhhhhh, anybody wanna share?"

Well, that was that. Now he was stuck in the sideshow attraction with this kid he'd never even met and Kurenai. Great, awesome. Kurenai began to ask questions, with the boy saying what came to mind.

"Well, that's not wrong..."

Maybe if he made enough snippy comments on the subject, Kurenai would realize this kid was pranking her and him at the same time? That outcome seemed unlikely. The boy continued to ramble on about something or other in regards to not seeing Kurenai; Maxina just scoffed at his half-assed excuse - So he WAS afraid of a little girl in a wheelchair. Pathetic. Maxina let out a huge sigh.

Maxina wasn't particularly hungry; as such he didn't bother to carry any food up to the roof. He could've taken some of the kid's food when he offered, but he'd get his penance for being pulled into this stunt soon enough. He just lounged out on the floor of the roof, leaning on the left side of his body, watching the two half-heartedly. Just what WAS their relationship, anyway...?

The elevator ride up took a short while. Apparently the two of them bumped into each other one day, so Kate just assumed they became friends from then on. "I have been to different places in school, we probably just didn't catch each other or something like that..." was Yoshima's response to her question. "Oh, alright." Kate replied, not really giving it a second thought. After all, it's not like something like that was impossible.

Upon reaching the roof, they were greeted to a fairly empty roof with the refreshing atmosphere of the coming autumn. It was nice, there wasn't really much heat up there and the occasional breeze was quite comforting.

The two boys sat down, with Kate situated on her wheelchair in a position near them. She took out her lunch box from her backpack only to see that inside were two, quite sloppily made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This wasn't normal... and only then did she recall that her sister made her lunch today. "Oh Cammy..." she mumbled as she looked upon them. And then, it seemed that she was not the only one who had some problems with her lunch. "Uhhhhh, anybody wanna share?" said Yoshi, whose lunch box appeared to be full of naught but tomatoes. "Sure... have one of these" Kate said, handing one of the messy sandwiches over to him.

So far, it seemed that Maxina was rather quiet. He didn't seem to be eating anything, nor did he seem to have any food on him. Perhaps he forgot to bring lunch. Kate hadn't started to eat her sandwich yet... "Hey, are you hungry? If you want you can have this." she said, motioning to her lunch. She would go without eating for the while, but it wouldn't be too much of a problem if she could help out someone else.

It was a little silent now, so perhaps a little conversation was in order. "So, how was your week Maxina?" she asked him, a simple harmless question. Perhaps from this they could get onto something else entirely, something more interesting.

Yoshima handed Kate a tomato and took one of the peanut butter sandwiches, it looked disgusting, whoever made it couldn't have been Kate's delicate little hands, but someone with brute, strong hands. The peanut butter and jelly were dripping out the soggy bread.
"Uh... Thanks."

"So, how was your week Maxina?" Kate asked Maxina.
(...)

Yoshima felt the need to break the ice as well and let Maxina into the conversation more, he thought about while taking a bite out of Kate's sloppy peanut butter sandwich, it tasted weird, as if someone used some weird ingredient that wasn't quite peanut butter or jelly, as if it was all made of soy. What the hell was it?

Oh hey, here, have a tomato, he offered Maxina, Y'know, even though we talked a bit I still haven't heard much from you, what's your story? He asked, making it as natural as possible yet without making it a lie, he was really on the top of his game that day, the only thing that could possibly screw him up were if Maxina blew his cover, then things would really go downhill from there, poor Kate, if she found out he lied to her she'd be devastated.

Maxina didn't seem to be in a good mood, but seeing as how he didn't complain about coming all the way up here he must have been a nice guy, before Maxina could answer Yoshima's previous question he already started talking again, just to play it safe.
"You're a pretty nice guy Maxie, thanks for coming up here with us, now please, do go on," he said with a smile, it was the best way to guarantee Maxina would play along.

Maxina was going to answer Kurenai in detail, he really was. It would be sincere and everything. But, he watched the two trade their food with each other - Why did this...? It wasn't important. Maxina was about to open his mouth, until the boy pressed the button he shouldn't have pressed.

"You're a pretty nice guy Maxie, thanks for coming up here with us, now please, do go on,"

"hepa KAPU!"
"Didn't I -JUST- fucking tell you not to call me "Maxie"?! That's it, this charade is over!"

Maxina exhaled after his outburst, then began to explain his day to Kurenai.

"Well, you know, Kurenai, it's funny you ask about that," Maxina stood up, "It was actually a pretty normal schoolweek, until about today, in fact. Some asshole ran into me, right? And this kid, he's practically pissing himself trying to run away and hide from some chick. I know, he's a class act, isn't he? So suddenly the chick he's so afraid of comes up to me and him, and the kid practically hides behind me, then suddenly shanghais me into his stupid plans, acting like he knows me and failing to listen after I told him to not speak to me like he knows me. So now I'm stuck in the dumbass plans of some boy I don't know, stringing along an innocent pair of people so he can do...I don't fucking know what he's doing, because I don't even know his fucking name! Isn't that right, boy?"

At the end of his rant, Maxina directly faced Nakayama and threw his arms up in the air. This HAD to spell it all out for Kurenai - This game's over, kid.

Everything seemed to be going normally. Yoshima seemed a tad bit disgusted by the sandwich but had still accepted it anyway. However, something unexpected happened before Maxina could answer her next question, something unexpected had happened.

Upon hearing Yoshi call him "Maxie", Maxina flipped out and started saying something about how the "charade" was over. "What are you talking about?" His words were harsh to say the least. As it so happened, Maxina and Yoshima didn't actually know each other and Yoshi was making quite the effort to hide from her, as if she was afraid of her. But why...

Right now Kate was simply confused by what was going on. Distraught, she asked Yoshima, "Why are you afraid of me? Have I done something wrong?". What on earth could have happened that made him afraid of her? "If I have done something wrong, you could have just told me... I wouldn't do anything to hurt you." she said in a very apologetic tone.

Perhaps whatever damage was done could be repaired. She didn't even notice what was wrong so perhaps it wasn't as bad as they thought...

Yoshima watched with his mouth wide open as Maxina blew his cover, that bastard went on and on about how Yoshima was lying. He had quite the filthy mouth on him.

Kate started asking questions, but it seemed that she thought she was the on at fault instead of him, that just made Yoshima's blood boil.

"How dare you use that filthy language in the presence of a girl! You should be ashamed of yourself, look! You even made her question herself!" he yelled while pointing at Kate, then turned around and said:
"I'm sorry, it's not your problem, it's something I have been facing my whole life, don't feel bad OK? Maxina is just a jerk. We didn't meet until today when I bumped into him while running away from you, I'm sorry, I'm an idiot, can we just enjoy lunch before you freak out?" then took a deep breath.
You actually know this creep? He looks kinda dangerous, not the kind of person you'd see a small girl hanging out with, he joked, trying to change the subject.
(...)
*sigh* "Alright, fine. I'm sorry I got you involved in this Mr. Maxina, there, happy I didn't call you by a cuter nickname? You can go now if you want, but if it's okay with you I wish we could start again with the right foot. My name's Yoshima Nakayama, nice to meet you," he said with a slight bow, kind of a habit of his people to bow when meeting someone new, although he basically abandoned those costumes, they still ran through his blood and involuntarily.
"So... We cool? If you are Kate's friend then I want to be your friend as well."

"How dare you use that filthy language in the presence of a girl! You should be ashamed of yourself, look! You even made her question herself!"

"Oh no, bad words, quick, call the cops." Maxina waved his arms up and down in a borderline listless manner. If this kid was going to play the role of white knight, he could certainly do a better job of it. If that statement he just threw down was supposed to be some kind of threat, it meant nothing to Maxina. Besides, the kid was the one in the shit, not Maxina; if he wanted to compound his problems by pissing him off, more power to him.

"I'm sorry...don't feel bad, okay? Maxina is just a jerk."

"Oh, hey, a talking pot! Never thought I'd find one of those. If you're looking to get thrown off the roof, you're making great time for it, wa'awa'a." Didn't this kid just get done saying something about not using filthy language in front of a girl? Didn't take him long to skirt that rule when it began restricting him. He went on.

"You actually know this creep? He looks kinda dangerous, not the kind of person you'd see a small girl hanging out with."

"Hey, look at that, strike two! I can and will fling you like a shot put, kid." That was the statement that seemed to work, and the boy FINALLY gave him an actual name, bowing while he did so. Looks like he actually commanded some authority! He'd be ali'i in no time.

"...Rasren. Maxina Rasren. You don't rope me into any hairbrained schemes and we'll get along just fine."

Things weren't going too well. Yoshima retaliated harshly to Maxina's comments and an argument was soon about to escalate. Kate could only watch, saddened by the rising conflicts. However, when Maxina started to threaten him with physical violence, she stepped in and exclaimed "Please stop! You're both good people! I know you're above this kind of petty fighting."

After a while they seemed to have calmed down. After sharing some introductions and making up, the conversation had effectively died down. The tension in the air was rising every moment as lunch proceeded. This felt incredibly awkward right now...

Kate remembered one thing Yoshima just said quite clearly. "It's something I have been facing my whole life,". What did he mean by that? She couldn't get the thought off her mind. She kept trying to decipher it but to no avail. So, she simply flat out asked, "Hey, when you said you've been facing something your whole life, what did you mean by that?"

Hopefully she wasn't being too blunt. Maybe she could help him with it, maybe she could actually do something for him. She could only hope that she wasn't prying into something too personal...
