THE RESIDENCE OF TRAVIS A. LANCE

Travis look out the window onto the porch, it was still abandoned as it was 30 seconds ago, when he had last checked to see if one of the last few allies he had in this world, Shu Mikami, was approaching the safe haven that was the Lance Estate. The two had met each other and were interrogated side-by-side about where they were when that body was discovered at the fireworks display at the end of the Ravencroft opening gala. Shu asked if he could hole up with Travis at his place until the panic died down, which Travis had swiftly allowed, telling Shu to trust no-one and hurry there as soon as he could. He sighed, it was a ghost town out there, he was starting to wonder if his friend was even going to show up at this rate.

He rubbed his eyes, he was getting tired, but it was only natural; he had been awoken not too long ago by the police officers who had taken him in for interrogation. Maybe he should get some sleep, he could probably enlist his sister or his mother's help to answer the door for him when Mikami does finally arrive. He heard foot steps behind him which, in this state of mind, naturally made him jump and spin around at border-line inhuman speeds. He calmed himself, it was only his younger sister, Katherine, still in her pajamas, clearly annoyed somehow at her brother and his still being awake at this hour. "Alright, you moron; get some sleep. I'll answer the door for you whenever whoever you're waiting for gets here." she said with a yawn and a stretch, lightly pushing her brother in the direction of the stairs as she stood next to the door, taking a quick glance out the window before looking at her brother with disapproving eyes that told him "sleep, you fool".

~ = ~ = ~ = ~

Her brother listened to her command, heading up the stairs and heading back to his room. Now that he was out of her hair, she could wait in peace for whatever her older brother was waiting for. She continued to glance out the window for a few seconds before she started to slowly close her eyes. She tried to shake herself awake, but to no avail, the sand-man had convinced her it would be okay to "rest her eyes" for a few minutes. She sat against the wall and slowly closed her eyes before dozing off.

~ Some time in the future... ~

She snapped her head upward, she had fallen asleep next to the door. She looked to her side, a noise had been generated from the other side of the door. It was probably her brother's guest he had been waiting for. She got up and thrust the door outwards in a sleepy daze. "Eh, wha- Who's there?" she blurted out, looking out onto the porch to see who was interrupting her nap.

Following the interrogation, Shu had done some things that one would've considered to be self-medicating by his standards, that was to say, take as many anti-depressants he could find within his home, which was honestly just a few leftover tablets of Cilexa from when he was on his medication. Following such a thing, the scientist adjusted his glasses, changed into more comfortable clothing, and began his packing.

----------LATER------

At approximately 3:30 AM, the boy came upon the location described to him, and could only stand in awe of Travis' accommodations for a moment before recalling the rather heavy box he held in his hands. A box filled with what he considered the "bare necessities" for what he had indeed envisioned to be a long stay at the Lance residence. That was to say, clothes, video games, and manga.

With a sigh and sense of urgency about him, urgency that easily contested the boy's poise as he moved with the large box, he moved around, through the darkness of the night and towards the door, occasionally glancing at the shadows around him as if they would come to life and consume him, like monsters in some kind of nightmarish fairy-tale.

Perhaps it was the antidepressants' fading away that caused such emotions, but even the moonlight, shining on the crystalline surface of the lake near the house seemed to cause unease in the boy.

Swallowing his courage, the scientist teetered forward, finally coming upon the door. It was at that point that he first tried rapping on it utilizing the backside of his left hand, due to his not wanting to put the heavy box down, for fear he could not pick it up again. No response. With a faint sigh, he tried again and again, until finally giving up and putting the item down, and trying again.

It was this time, that he got a response: a female one that served only to increase his nervousness tenfold, though it did not sound old enough to be someone's mother. Which left only one possibility: Travis had a sister, slightly older, same age, or younger. At first, Shu did not respond, for he was attempting to build up his courage in order to speak, but he simply could not. Instead, he let out a rather timid, melancholic, and dejected sounding reply of,

"...S-Shu Mikami.... A f-friend of Trav's..."

And then he moved to collect the box, his glasses falling down his nose quite a bit, though the scientist did not seem to notice, for it was not the time for such things. All that mattered was escaping, making sure he was safe and his commodities in life were safe.

She examined the boy as he simply sat there and tried to choke out a reply, he was about an inch taller than her, had glasses, and was clearly a nervous sort of person. Then, he finally managed to make some sort of noise that passed off as an attempt to communicate. "...S-Shu Mikami.... A f-friend of Trav's..." he said with a stutter, showing his familiarity with her brother by shortening his name in such a casual manner. He bent over to grab his things, seemingly with a sense of urgency, showing that he wanted to get inside as quickly as possible.

She felt rather mischievous tonight, she was losing sleep because of her brother and this friend of his. She was going to have some fun before letting him inside. She stretched her arms and legs out, subtlety blocking the entrance for her brother's friend. "Well, I just can't let a potential assassin in here and let him get close to my dear, sweet brother. It wouldn't be right to put him into any danger whatsoever." she said in a playful, airy tone of voice, a little eye-roll here and there. Anyone could see she was doing this just to toy with the boy in front of her.

She giggled, she was really having some fun right now. However, her fun was cut short when she heard the sound of feet on the grand wooden staircase behind her. She turned around; it was her brother, still in his outfit from the gala. He looked past his sister at Shu, and a relieved smile was instantly spread across his face. "Old Sport; what took you so long? I hope Kathy didn't give you too much trouble." he said in a border-line ecstatic tone of voice, casting a suspicious glace at his younger sister as he descended the stairs towards the front door. "Oh, I was just welcoming him to our humble abode." she said with a slight huff, moving out of the way of the door, welcoming Shu inside.

The girl's restriction of passage simply caused Shu, who had been engaged in taking a few steps forward, to immediately stop himself, almost falling in the process. As the girl let out her words, the scientist frowned, realizing via her tone that she was simply messing with him... and such a form of teasing was simply met with a frown and a blank expression.

One that soon perked up with the appearance of Travis himself. Certainly, he would be able to identify him! And once the other student did, Shu shook his head as if to verify that the girl, now identified as Kathy, had not pestered him. (Too much, anyway.)

When the girl vacated the path before him, the scientist entered the luxurious home and found his eyes tracing the inside of it as he had the outside, with no little amount of awe in his eyes as he did so. Once again reminded of the burden he bore when the box finally began to cause a bit of strain in his back, Shu began to speak to his friend,

"Wh-Where will I be s-staying? ...This box is... r-really heavy."

It was clear in both his tone and general demeanour that the entire house seemed to give him a feeling of comfort, namely because it was not outside and therefore, the chance of death and the reminder of the murder were both eliminated from the scientist completely. Had he the time, it would've been likely that the brown hues he possessed would've scanned the walls, but time was not a luxury, for his strength had been waning.

"Also...? Y-your sister didn't b-b-bother me at all..."

"Wh-Where will I be s-staying? ...This box is... r-really heavy." Shu asked, clearly starting to really feel the strain of carrying his things. This snapped Travis back to reality, his friend and guest was getting tired. "Ah, yes, you'll be in the guest room right next to my room." Travis told Shu, starting back up the stairs, his hand motioning Shu along. "I hope your okay to go upstairs with such a heavy load." Travis pointed out, showing concern for his friend and his possessions safety. However, his sister wasn't going to go back to sleep without taking one last punch at her brother and his friend.

"Be careful Al, that friend of yours could always just be another one of those 'assassins' you're always talking about." she announced up the stairs with a light yell, as to not disturb their mother's sleep, before walking into the kitchen to get something to help her sleep easier. She expected this to phase her brother, maybe make him act a little more irrationally tonight; but it barely phase him, he had too much trust in Shu to believe that he would do anything to hurt him. So he continued up the stairs, looking over his shoulder every now and then to make sure Shu was carrying on alright. When the two reached the top of the stairs onto the second floor, Travis turned to his friend once again. "Now, I've cleared everything out with Mother already, you can stay for as long as you need to." he briefly explained to him, starting down the hallway shortly after.

"Do you have any questions?"

The scientist nodded to the response he got, nodding when asked if he was okay to go upstairs with the heavy load. However, such a statement was rather foolish, considering how he teetered and almost fell upon taking the first step. Regardless, the boy caught himself and sighed upon hearing Kathy's remark.

Curious as to what the girl meant, Shu began to think back to the incident at the police station and how Travis had reacted upon hearing about the murder. Of course, he thought such a reaction was only natural up until that point. What had Kathy meant by assassins, and why did Travis speak of them so often? The boy was quick to wave those thoughts away as he was brought back to reality by his friend's words,

"Al-alright, and no... I don't have any q-q-questions..."

Trying to straighten himself out again, and making a serious attempt at keeping his balance, the boy turned and began to follow Travis down the hallway. As he did so, he tried to pay close attention to the things around him, the things blurred in the areas his glasses did not cover.

(This is crap, I know. I apologize.)

Travis stopped in front of one of the many fine wooden doors in the hallway, cocking his head to look at it, briefly examining it before opening it. He wasn't sure why he had stopped to examine the door, there was nothing noteworthy about the door, no one had used the guest room at all since the Lances had moved into this lakeside manor, maybe giving it that brief examination quelled his nerves a little, he himself didn't even know. He walked up to the door and opened it, presenting the guest room to Shu. "Here we are." he announced, raising his hand inside the door-frame, as to usher his friend inside. The room wasn't spectacular compared to the rest of the mansion, it was what one would've expected from the mansion by this point; a bed, a moderately-sized TV placed on top of a respectably-engraved dresser, a computer desk with a few small bookshelves built in for anything the occupants wanted to store in them, but nothing too amazing. The room would've been a little dusty had Travis not spent the time his sister told him to spend sleeping cleaning the guest room for his "Old Sport".

Travis walked in and sat himself down in the chair that was pushed in under the computer desk, observing his friend's movements with that relieved smile that stuck to his face when he first saw his friend enter his home, Theodore sitting gracefully across his lap, the dog-head on the top of the cane eyeballing the door with it's naturally unmoving face. "Well I suppose I should give you the basics." Travis said, opening one of the drawers in the desk and withdrawing the contents which included a small notebook, a TV remote, and some batteries. He flipped open the book, revealing a repetitive list of numbers and channel names, and a needlessly-long list of digits next to the words connection password. Anyone could tell that this was going to take a while.

- SOMETIME LATER... -

After going through a rather long, plain, and honestly-boring rundown of what channels Shu had access to, the general schedule to how things worked in the Lance house, et cetera; Travis stood up from his seat and started towards the door. It was about 3:55AM now, so he might as well get in what little bit of sleep he could get in at this time. "Good night Mikami, Kathy'll probably swing around to wake you up at 9 in the morning, so you should get some sleep." he said as he opened the door, looking back into the room to assess his friend's situation one last time before shutting the door and returning to his own room. He locked the door and laid down on his bed, carelessly leaning Theodore against the dresser by his bedside before going to sleep.

The scientist followed along until Travis stopped. So immersed in taking in the sights of an actual mansion was he, that he didn't notice the stopping until a few seconds after it had happened, causing him to take about three additional steps before turning and facing his friend as he opened the door.

"Th-Thanks."

Continuing to keep the box balanced, Shu half stepped, half staggered into the room, immediately placing down his box of "self-medication items" and clothing on the bed, feeling a great weight lifted as he did so. Taking that moment as an opportunity to both look around the room and finally push his glasses back up, the scientist took in Trav's explanation, nodding every once in awhile as he started to straighten himself out by placing clothes in the closet, setting up his PS3.

Judging by the amount of items the despairing boy had brought with him, it was quite clear that he intended to stay for quite some time, likely due to how unsafe the outside world seemed to be with a murderer on the loose. Finishing up with his unpacking, Shu took in the rest of Trav's explanation in silence.

___________________LATER__________________

Sometime during the explanation, Shu had gone from his previous awake and nervous state to a sort of zombie-like nodding off that usually came with his insomnia at about three to four in the morning if he wasn't sitting in front of a computer, or if he hadn't had enough caffeine. Regardless, the boy tried to remain respectful, though his constant mechanical nodding could be seen as either the product of tiredness or acute disrespect. It was quite obviously the former.

With Trav's departure, the scientist barely managed to muster up enough energy to give a goodbye, one that was mumbled and barely audible due to the lack of energy behind it,

"...I'll probably be up by then... I'm an insomniac, after all..."

With that and Trav's actual leaving the room, the scientist laid back on his bed and waited. Of course, sleep didn't come, but it was only a matter of minutes before his lack of energy finally forced him to slumber. Naturally, the brain activity that had occurred during this period caused nightmares, similar to those that had plagued him before but nothing that... pleasant in nature.

-------Later (again)-----------

So of course, he woke up at some time after sunrise, panting and trying to reassure himself everything was okay. Upon taking his laptop from the small bedside table he'd rested it on sometime in the night, the scientist flipped it open and learned the time. 8:47 AM...

Well, that seemed like as good a time as any to connect his computer to the Wi-Fi, so that was what he did in the following ten minutes, while he waited for someone to come and wake him up, not that he needed an awakening or anything.

Travis was awakened at 8:55AM by a loud rapping on his door. Normally, he would've tossed a few sleepy complaints at his sister, who was usually at the other side of the door, maybe toss a couple stereotypical "five more minutes" here and there. But Travis was in a different state of mind, the daily, normal schedule he had grown used to could easily be used against him, so when the loud wooden knocking noises came from the door, Travis fell from his bed in surprise, the noise of the impact easily audible from the guest room next door. Then, when the voice of his "sweet-sweet" sister slid into the room through the cracks of his door, he instantly calmed down and used Theodore as a support to help him stand up.

He walked over to the door and opened the door slightly, giving him a view out into the hall way. The pajama-dressed Travis was met at his door with the pleasant sight of his sister, still in her pajamas from last night, her face one of dread and anger. Kathy wasn't a morning person, so she was the perfect person to task with waking up anyone who was asleep. "Ergh... Ma's got breakfast ready down in the kitchen, get it while it's hot." she said groggily, pinching the bridge of her nose and closing her eyes in her usual solar-charged annoyance. Travis didn't argue, he rushed downstairs into the kitchen as fast as his cane would carry him after reminding his sister to wake their guest up.

Kathy stood in front of the guest room door. She just wanted to get down to the kitchen for her mother's pancakes and bacon as soon as she could, so she simply hit the door with the knuckles on her left hand, exhibiting less enthusiasm then when she knocked on her brother's door. "Hey... uh... Shu, was it? My Ma's got breakfast ready down in the kitchen, you should get some while it's hot." she announced through the door before heading on her own, merry way to the kitchen.

Shu turned into a fully alert state the moment he heard someone rapping on the next room's door, and the noise created by Trav's falling out of bed. He did not bother to move from his position, however, he merely jumped a little and forced himself totally awake, which in itself was a very difficult task.

It wasn't until the second time rapping came, and both the voice and general energy displayed by the girl as she rapped at the door and spoke to him that the boy noticed diffidence, and nodded slightly only to adjust his glasses and facepalm at the fact the girl could not see him do so. In response, he simply called out a rather meek,

"A-Alright..."

Before calmly and quietly exiting the room, shedding the lab coat he'd changed into the previous night to avoid looking like a total weirdo. However, the instant such a thing was done, Shu felt as though he'd been standing in near Arctic temperatures, and quickly moved to throw it back on, before making his way downstairs.

Following the same path Travis had shown him the previous night, the scientist descended the stairs in a relatively limp fashion, one that was half step and half stumble, before scanning the area once more, and entering what he'd assumed to be the kitchen with a strangely lively,

"G-Good morning."

Of course, that was not addressed to anyone in particular.

As Shu entered the kitchen; he was treated to the sight of a usual Lance morning. Kathy was struggling to stay awake as she leaned on the counter with an empty plate in front of her. Her brother, Travis, was leaning against the counter, an empty plate in one hand and his cane in the other. Lastly, the head of the house, Bonnie, was sitting in front of the stove, using a spatula to scrape some pancakes off of the hot, metal surface of a frying pan and onto her plate, which already held a decently-sized serving of bacon and a small puddle of maple syrup. No one had bothered to change out of their pajamas, creating a rather humorous scene, considering the cute, cartoony animal shapes on the bathrobe Bonnie had on over her usual sleep-wear.

There was a fully-prepared plate of pancakes and bacon sitting at one of the places at the kitchen table; this plate was to be Shu's. The Lances rarely ate breakfast out in the adjacent dining room, they found the kitchen to be much more friendly and inviting in the morning hours. Bonnie curiously glanced over her shoulder at the guest that her brother had brought in last night as she finally grabbed a 3rd pancake and started towards the kitchen table. This was her first time seeing the new guest, but she figured if her son trusted him; she had nothing to worry about. She pulled out the chair across the table from Shu's seat and sat down and began eating her breakfast.

"Good mornin' to you too, uh... Mikami, right?" she finally replied through hearty bites of food. His mother's hesitation reminded her son that he had never introduced the two to each other. "Oh, yeah; that's right. Mikami, that's my mother, Bonnie." Travis said from the stove-top, which he had moved up to so he could grab his food, motioning the empty spatula in his hand in his mother's direction. "She's heading out for a few hours soon, so if you have any questions about the house or our lovely family, ask her soon." he pointed out as he continued to fix his plate.

Naturally, despite the bags under his eyes and the near zombie-like feeling Shu felt, he couldn't help but take in the sight of a what looked like a typical Lance morning with a bit of interest. Naturally, his eyes stopped on Kathy for a moment, only to shoot her something of a sympathetic smile as if to say "I know exactly how you feel", before moving on to the woman preparing a plate of food for herself, and then to the plate on the table.

Oddly enough, that morning was one of the few instances in which the scientist was hungry. A rare occasion on its own, when the boy took his seat and began to eat his food, it didn't feel as though it typically did. That was to say, as though the food was not doing a damned thing to satisfy his hunger. Smiling, Shu adjusted his glasses and took in the woman's words with a faint bit of a nod despite Travis answering her moments later. Regardless, it would be rude not to properly introduce himself, right?

"Oh, uhm... I'm.... Shu Mikami... yes."

It was clear judging by the spacing between each word that there was some sort of struggle going on. Namely Mikami's trying to convince himself that there was no need to be nervous, and therefore no need to stutter. Of course, such a thing obviously just wouldn't do and therefore, adjustments had to be made just like when dealing with machines, hence the pausing.

Swallowing yet another piece of bacon, Shu took in Travis' question before turning his expression from somewhere in between timidity, zombification, and happiness into pensiveness. What exactly needed to be said or done? In those few moments, Shu eventually let out a bit of a sigh and proceeded to finally come upon something that could be viewed as important, now if only he could say it without stuttering or taking odd pauses!

"W-Well... before I ask a-anything I g-g-guess I'd l-like to thank you a-all for b-breakfast and for l-l-letting me st-stay... as for q-q-questions.... I j-just have one... a-are there any house rules I sh-should know about?"

Immediately after opening his mouth, the scientist tried to refrain from putting his head down in shame due to the stuttering. However, it simply couldn't be helped and therefore, he merely settled for cursing himself inwardly and despairing about it a little. It was one thing to simply not be self-confident, but it was another to talk in such a manner before such hospitable people!

Regardless, the boy soon turned his attention to his remaining food, which he tried to down with a sort of odd rhythm about him to avoid looking too ravenous/uncouth, but also to avoid looking as though he didn't like the food that was prepared for him. Which honestly, he did. Especially considering eating home cooked meals was a rarity in the Mikami household, what with his own inability to cook and his father's never being home.

"W-Well... before I ask a-anything I g-g-guess I'd l-like to thank you a-all for b-breakfast and for l-l-letting me st-stay..." Shu started with a sigh. Bonnie waved him off rather comically with a fork. "Oh, it's no trouble, really; we still have another guest room if the need for it ever arises." she explained very briefly before returning to her food. "-as for q-q-questions.... I j-just have one... a-are there any house rules I sh-should know about?" Shu added afterwards, leading Bonnie to think on the topic for a couple of moments while she chewed her food.

"...Don't go barging into other people's rooms without their permission... Don't make messes... Et cetera. Bonnie explained with an odd pause here-and-there as she struggled slightly to think of any rules she might've forgotten. "Just... generally don't be a menace around the place and you'll be just fine. she said before getting right back to her food. Travis then pulled out the seat next to Shu and set his plate down as he settled into the nice, cushioned wooden chair and began eating his food at a rather slow pace for someone. Upon closer inspection, one could see that Travis' eyes were a bit blood-shot. This was actually understandable, as Travis had woken up many times throughout the night, awakened by terrible dreams, his random thoughts of "Did I lock that before I laid down?" or "That guy who killed that person at the fireworks display could be hiding right outside the window right now.", and many other random things brought upon by his irrational paranoia.

"So... uh..." Bonnie started rather awkwardly, holding a half-eaten piece of bacon between her fingers. "Why was my son called down to the police station last night anyway?" she asked the two rather bluntly. "Did you two do something crazy at that Gala? Are you two in any trouble I should know about?" she continued rather suspiciously, continually shifting her gaze between the two. Travis should've seen this coming; wouldn't any mother be suspicious when her son gets called to the police station late at night?
