If there was something that Stephen and Claire Halberd had told their daughter time and time again is that new locations always meant fresh starts and nothing would be as fresh as Rockport or even Ravencroft. Actually, it was her first day of school in her new home city; the school was luxurious with a capital L. The gardens were beautiful. Jenny found them to possibly be the most relaxing place on campus after taking a quick surveillance when she had her tour yesterday. She managed to find a nice shaded bench in the path of a warm breeze and decided for the time being to set up camp; she had her pad out and headphones in with her bag at her feet, pad on her lap, and a bowl of crawdad gumbo so hot that the smell of it would most likely melt your skin off sitting in a surprisingly sturdy - considering heat in both temperature and Scoville units the soup was - green Tupperware container she'd heated in her half-vacant dorm before finding the bench. "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" seemed to be a proper conductor for her creativity. If nothing else, the song was definitely vivid and allowed her creativity to flow forth with a near ease that some could say she was on autopilot as she sketched her surroundings but in a dark manner.

Jenny was drawing the pathway where she was sitting, but it definitely wasn't a daytime landscape. The trees were dark and shadowed, and she took careful attention to detail to make sure the glowing red eyes she was drawing among the shadows and trees appeared to be a normal width apart in pairs and the ones in the background were further out, opposed to those in the foreground. There would undoubtedly be people who would look at this drawing and believe it to be evil, but her face reflected the exact opposite. Jenny's face carried a large grin while she would pause at random intervals to sip at her gumbo. To her, they weren't mean eyes. Or even red. She'd seen them in the bayous where her full-blooded Hatian grandmother lived (though that section of her genetics wasn't apparent in her appearance), and they glowed so black and hot they only appeared to be red. Both her mother and grandmother would just reassure her that they were the spirits of people lost in the swamps that were merely there to watch over the others that entered so they didn't suffer the same fate.

She could feel the other end of the bench dip, but she didn't look up from her pad or remove her headphones. If she was interested in talking, she would have undone her earbuds and greeted them and if they were interested in speaking with her, they'd have to make it more obvious over the Aesop Rock remix of a Mountain Goats song currently pounding in her head. She felt a hand on her shoulder that made her jump; she looked over, seeing an unfamiliar face sitting next to her. The smile widened as she pulled the earbuds out - it would be rude to ignore them, since they'd gotten her attention - and flipped the pad over to a blank page (hopefully they wouldn't notice) to hide her drawing. "Hey, didn't see you there. Sorry." Though apologizing, she still managed to sound upbeat. Her hands fell to the edge of her drawing pad and clutched the lip of it that sat right over her knees. She was always up for talking to people, especially new ones in a new school and city.

It was another average day at Ravencroft. The sun was shining amidst a clear blue sky. What a pretty day... However, that didn't stop it from being quite uneventful. To try and remedy this boredom, Isaac was wandering about school with no clear destination in mind. Eventually he stumbled upon the garden. He didn't come here quite often, but each time he did, he could feel a certain air about it that simply made it feel calm. It was certainly a nice place... He should come here more often. While he was thinking though, he noticed that there was a girl on the bench. She seemed to be drawing something. How... intriguing. He had nothing else to do for now, so maybe she wouldn't mind some company.

He sat beside her on the bench, which was when he noticed she was listening to music. He didn't want to bother her music so he simply watched for the moment. He couldn't get a great view of the drawing but he could still see it somewhat... and what he saw was certainly not what he was expecting. The scenery in it resembled the area they were in but it wasn't completely the same. Rather, it looked as if the place was plunged into some sort of darker world. There were also some small red points on it but he couldn't quite make out what they were. Something about it was fairly... mystifying, if there was no better word to describe it with. It was then that his curiousity got the better of him as he leaned over a bit to look at it and had unconsciously put his hand on her shoulder. The girl was a tad bit startled at this and said, in a somewhat happy tone, "Hey, didn't see you there. Sorry."

Why was she apologizing? She didn't quite do anything wrong. "Y-You don't have to apologize. If anything, it should be me who should apologize for sitting here unannounced. I hope you don't mind about that by the way." Isaac said to the girl. He then noticed that she had changed the page on the book she was drawing on. Maybe he should address this... "Hey... about your drawing. I'm sorry if I've invaded your privacy by taking a look at it, but it was certainly something I haven't seen before. I-I mean that in a good way, for the record." he continued, hoping he wasn't stepping on any toes with this topic. "Oh, my name is Isaac, by the way. What's yours?" he said as he introduced himself in a fairly simple manner.

Isaac was funny; not in the "haha" kind of way, but he was odd. That isn't necessarily bad either, however. "I'm Jenny." She got out with the same kind of upbeat tone as her previous greeting. The fact that he had inquired about her drawing wasn't blase to her either. She was just trying to think of the best way to explain it to someone who didn't come from where she did without sounding like she was going, "Ooga Booga Booga" and shaking a rain stick. That's not at all what she wanted so choice of words here was of the most dire importance - at least at this point in time. First impressions were everything and she had not a single friend since coming to this school. In all actuality, the handful of friends she did have were all off somewhere else, too. Her network was spread thin and Jenny was the type who thrived on social interaction.

She took a deep breath as her fingers ran over the edges of the pages in her sketch pad. Her chest heaved with a tremendous inhale, then collapsed back down with an audible exhale. She trapped the covering pages between her thumb and forefinger; if she was going to do it, now would be the time. The cover page peeled back while she used her other hand to hold the pad vertical so the page could make its full rotation up and over. The drawing was revealed. Jenny bit at the back of her bottom lip and let out another sigh, this time it was rather small and had no build-up to it. At this point in time her eyes had fallen off of Isaac and to the pad on her lap while her smile washed away. "Its..." She stopped. How would she explain this? How could she explain? "Ooga Booga" kept running through her head. She wasn't a witch doctor, for Christ's sake, but people asking about things close to her before she was ready t talk about them made her feel uneasy. Then, it sparked. Lore. She could just tell him it was a myth from where she was from. Jenny's eyes switched from the pad back to Isaac. "... Its a story back where I'm from about supernatural protectors in the swamps. As the story goes, they're the ghosts of people who died in the swamp that watch over others who come in to make sure they don't end up the same way."

A smile again formed and her head tilted to the side slightly as it tends to do when she's patting herself on the back. She managed to tell him the truth without mentioning the fact that her Haitian grandmother lived in the bayou and was herself a shaman. Hell, she was so proud of herself for dancing around that she may have to get herself some cornbread and beans. She tilted the pad in Isaac's direction so he could get a better view. "I dunno. I just feel better knowing that they're here, even if they aren't, y'know?" Jenny said earnestly after he head had returned to an upright position. She was hoping that the explanation of the red, glowing eyes in the trees would be enough to not scare Isaac away. She could only wait and see.

"I'm Jenny." she said, once again a sense of happiness apparent in her voice. "Nice to meet you Jenny." Isaac replied, almost instinctively. It was mostly out of courtesy, but that didn't mean it wasn't true, unlike how it was plenty of times in this modern society. She seemed like an interesting girl, to say the least, and Isaac wouldn't mind a few more friends. Hopefully in time, she would become just that, and not some sort of enemy who held a grudge on him for whatsoever reason.

Isaac's train of thought was interrupted by her examining her sketchbook and taking a deep breath afterwards. Perhaps the topic was to be brought back to the drawing... She had then opened it once more and revealed the art that she was working on moments ago. However, she didn't quite seem pleased. With a slight sigh, she had started to speak but had cut herself short as her smile faded away. Perhaps speaking of this wasn't exactly a pleasant topic for her... He felt a tad bit guilty if it did happen to be like that, but it seems that there's no way to take it back anymore. However, she then took her eyes off the drawing and said "... Its a story back where I'm from about supernatural protectors in the swamps. As the story goes, they're the ghosts of people who died in the swamp that watch over others who come in to make sure they don't end up the same way."

A story huh? That was quite intriguing. Having those who had fallen guide the ones with their lives intact to safety... it was a bit strange as usually anything involving dead people had ended up being a sort of scary story, but this one held a sort of sense of safety to them. "I dunno. I just feel better knowing that they're here, even if they aren't, y'know?" she said again, now making it easier for Isaac to see the drawing. Upon closer inspection, it seemed like the red dots he had seen before were actually eyes. Those must have been the ghosts that she mentioned. They didn't look like the kind of thing that would help anyone from an early death but he couldn't see any malevolence from such either. "I understand. It's better to have any kind of support whenever possible, even if it's from the souls of departed strangers." Isaac said with a light smile.

"You must come from an interesting place if it has stories like that." Isaac said. There's no way he'd hear something like that from where he was from... "Kind of makes me wish I was from a place like that. Would've made life more fun." he continued, taking another look at the drawing. He couldn't help but wonder if there were such spirits watching over them at this very moment...

Relief. That word doesn't even begin to describe what she was feeling after her art reveal and explanation. Oddly, Isaac actually seemed interested in her artwork and its story going as far to say that it was an interesting place and how he himself wished he had come from somewhere as equally as interesting. She rotated the pad back to her and flipped it shut, all the way back to the beige cover that read "Sketchpad" and had a pencil drawing of a hand drawing with a pencil. Her arms folded back over the front of the book and her wrists touched, her fingers wrapped back around the edges. "There ain't no place like New Orleans." she said in an almost singsong voice. The vivid memories of Mardi Gras came flooding back. The colors. The party. It seemed like while that was going on, The Big Easy was in its own time and space. The sax players on every corner. The renovated Speak Easies that were now legal and had a smooth mixture of jazz and blues bellowing from it. Sometimes reminiscing was the only remedy for her homesickness but she did in fact inflict this move on herself by her own hand. "It's a very spiritual city. We don't fear ghosts or their stories, or even mourn the dead. We celebrate them."

Wasn't that the truth of it. It almost made her think that coming to Rockport was a mistake, but she quickly blew that thought out of her head ASAP. Rockport - and Ravencroft - were gorgeous and interesting in their own rights. "So it's not like I was raised to be afraid of when things went bump or we heard noises. Mama used to tell me that it was just someone passin' through." Some would say that Jenny's ability to nonchalantly talk about spirits was amazing; perhaps it was due to the fact that she could use that as a shield from outrightly talking of her religious beliefs. A lot less people are freaked out by someone who may or may not be spiritually in tune then they would be if they heard Jenny was in training to be a shaman or if they stepped foot into her dorm without knowing exactly what they were expecting. Besides, Isaac seemed genuinely interested in her explanation, and maybe he believed in another world directly connected the one they knew as well. That would be a talk for a different time; she'd get far too involved and go way over the lunch bell.

"We like to think that the people who hang around aren't malicious. I mean, the only reason they even show up with red eyes in the swamp is due to the fact that's how black their eyes are, y'know? So black it burns." She fidgeted with the edge of the notepad some more. Perhaps it was time to let Isaac talk about himself for once; Jenny could be a blabbermouth after all and she was sure she'd eventually bore the poor boy to death. "I mean, I'm sure where you're from, they've got some interesting stuff. There's no such thing as a boring area. You just need to know what to look for." Her smile widened and her fingers continued to fidget on the edge of her book. Her eyes didn't break from Isaac either; he must think she's a weirdo for staring him down. Her father's lesson of, "Always look at someone when you speak" never did leave her, though.

After closing her sketchpad, Jenny rather happily said "There ain't no place like New Orleans.". So that's where she was from, huh? He didn't really know much about places other than his own hometown, so he'd have to take her word for it. "It's a very spiritual city. We don't fear ghosts or their stories, or even mourn the dead. We celebrate them." she continued. How interesting... Isaac hadn't really heard of having such an inverse opinion on the dead. Nor could he say that it was a bad thing...

"So it's not like I was raised to be afraid of when things went bump or we heard noises. Mama used to tell me that it was just someone passin' through." she continued. It seems that such treatment had caused the fear that would ordinarily set in was replaced by something that was practically the opposite. No doubt that it would make life a lot easier at times. "We like to think that the people who hang around aren't malicious. I mean, the only reason they even show up with red eyes in the swamp is due to the fact that's how black their eyes are, y'know? So black it burns." she said. So black it burns... To be quite honest, Isaac could keep listening to this all day. To learn of how other parts of the world differed so much was certainly a good way to spend time.

"I mean, I'm sure where you're from, they've got some interesting stuff. There's no such thing as a boring area. You just need to know what to look for." Jenny said, changing the topic somewhat. "I guess you're right about that. There's no way any sane person would call New York boring... Though I can't really say the kind of stuff there is really what I'd like." Isaac said. He noticed that she was looking straight at him the whole time. It wasn't really that much of a problem, though it did make him feel a bit awkward. Was there something on him? Maybe it was the white hair? Either ways, he continued, saying "I-It's just that that kind of place isn't really the kind of place I'd be comfortable in..."

New York, huh? Jenny would have put Isaac as a small town boy based on how he carries himself and the previous mention of "Nothing to do". That was a place that was on her list to visit, too. She planned on doing a whole lot of traveling after school. As a matter of fact, she thought being an art teacher in The Big Apple would be pretty cool. Here she sat next to a native, and nothing about him said such. Jenny was from a city, but not the kind of city that would give someone a hard edge. New Orleans and New York were two completely different towns. Two completely different towns...

Aha! "If ya ever in N'Orleans, look me up. I'd be glad to give you a tour." As she dropped the offer into Isaac's lap punctuated with a small laugh, Jenny's eyes fell to the wood before her. That damn Cajun accent reared its head - only briefly - enough for Isaac to notice. Jenny loved her hometown but that accent was hardly understandable. She'd actually forgot to flip the switch as it were when she met the headmaster, who simply looked at her with a puzzled look on their face and gave the blank response of "What?" when she was done. She didn't want that to happen here only for the sake of keeping things simple. "I bet New York isn't all bad." She nodded to confirm her own statement before continuing. "Y'all got some cool places there. I mean, I've never seen something so pretty as Times Square lit up at night."

That was kind of a lie; the only thing that she felt could rival the majesty of Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras or any festival for that matter. Her eyes came back and landed on Isaac again with a warm smile stretched across her face. If one were to be so inclined to study her face closely, they might even be able to say her eyes themselves were smiling as well. "But maybe you'll find something you like in Rockport, no?" Jenny held her expression and tone of voice. This place was pretty cool she had to admit that the city was pretty cool, though she had only seen a small portion of it thus far. Don't get it wrong, she loved to explore but she really preferred the company of others while she did so.

"If ya ever in N'Orleans, look me up. I'd be glad to give you a tour." Jenny said with a short laugh in between. A slight accent seemed to have popped up in that sentence. Interesting... "I'd love to take you up on that offer." Isaac said, chuckling a bit himself. It would be nice to see the city from which those myths originate. "I bet New York isn't all bad." she said, nodding at that statement. "Y'all got some cool places there. I mean, I've never seen something so pretty as Times Square lit up at night.".

Times Square... "Places like that certainly are nice but I didn't live in Manhattan so it wasn't every day I got to go there." Isaac replied with a slight sigh. "Compared to that place, Long Island doesn't really have as much to it." The most he could really do without any friends was stay at home, play some video games, maybe take the dog out for a walk. "But maybe you'll find something you like in Rockport, no?" she asked. So far, Rockport certainly had much more to offer, both in terms of things to do and people to do things with. There was already some places he'd started to frequent, the first thing coming to mind being the arcade.

"I guess you could say I already have. I already like this place much more than my hometown. There's just so much more to do, you know?" Isaac said. "How about you? What do you think of this place so far?" he asked her. He'd certainly like to know what someone like her thought of this place. Although, given that he hadn't really seen her around yet meant that she hadn't been around long enough to form an opinion yet...

She had to put some deep thought into that question. Sure, Jenny had only been in Rockport for a week and Ravencroft for less, but she had sure done her share of investigation. She loved all of the Holistic shops and some of the more artsy parts of town. "Well, I gotta say this place has it's own spirit." Jenny remarked, her face shadowed in deep, contemplative thought as she continued. "It's got its own style. Instead'a Voodoo museums and theme bars on every corner, we've got art shops and nice lil' bistros here."

Rockport had its own unique flavor, but then again, what city didn't? Jenny fully believed that every city had its own feel to it; hell, every town had its own feel to it. She'd been places before enough to form that kind of opinion, but she had never been able to appropriately label the populated areas outside of the labels already applied to them and she sure wasn't going to try with Rockport. Jenny did genuinely like the city thus far, which was evident by the warm smile that took to the front on her face. She doubted her opinion formed on Rockport would ever change and if anything grow stronger the more she explored.

Her head did manage to come out of the clouds and ceased the pondering long enough to remember that there was someone sitting next to her, listening. "Sorry." She said sheepishly, tucking her lips in as her eyes read exactly what she had said. "I kinda get lost in thought every now and again. My pa always said my brain was runnin' faster than my mouth." The smile returned to her mouth and eyes as she parlayed the information her father had told her to Isaac. It was probably the most astute assessment of why she would occasionally get off her train of thought she could think of.

"Well, I gotta say this place has it's own spirit." Jenny said, now thinking about something. "It's got its own style. Instead'a Voodoo museums and theme bars on every corner, we've got art shops and nice lil' bistros here." she said. "That's true I guess. Rockport is pretty unique." Isaac replied. He hadn't really seen any place with such a diversity in people and tastes such as in this place. It was possible that there was at least one person from each country in the world here.

Jenny had started to go deep into thought shortly afterwards. Isaac could only wonder what she was thinking of. He took a look around his surroundings for a small moment. How long had it been since he had spent a regular lunch like this? Just talking with someone else and spending time through simple conversation... It was nice to do things without some excitement for once. Relaxing even, compared to the events that happened some weeks ago at the school. Maybe it'd still be possible to have a regular life over here...

"Sorry." Jenny spoke, breaking the temporary silence. "I kinda get lost in thought every now and again. My pa always said my brain was runnin' faster than my mouth." she continued. "It's alright, I guess it happens to me a lot as well. It's nice to gather your thoughts every once in a while." Isaac replied. Getting lost in thought... it happens to Isaac so often that he might as well consider it a hobby.

"Yeah." Jenny responded with a sigh. Here eyes were fixated on the beautiful gardens strewn about the grounds. Whoever did the landscaping for Ravencroft deserved a medal; it didn't even feel like a school. "That's why I wanted to come here. This school might be where I need to be to learn how to focus." Especially where the school focused on accelerating talents of the students, she would be able to get ahead for once. She was a good student, but only if it were studies she enjoyed. "That and it's a really pretty place." The singsong voice made another appearance as the words seemingly danced of Jenny's tongue.

When she was given the option to either stay in America or go with her parents, it was a rough one. In fact, if Ravencroft didn't exist, she'd be off eating crumpets and drinking tea at this very moment in time. her eyes darted down to the bowl as she set it on her lap and began to sip a few spoonfuls. It was lunchtime after all, and she was hungry. "Bet you never had nothin' like this." Jenny noted, lifting the bowl to signify that this is what she was talking about. She felt like she was going to take all of his time to eat away from him; that's not to say she wanted to stop talking but she was hoping the gesture might remind him that he has food. "What brings you to Ravencroft?" Considering the school's background and purpose, Isaac must have been good at something. As she posed the question, she directed her eyes from the garden and her meal back to him.

"That's why I wanted to come here. This school might be where I need to be to learn how to focus." Jenny said after agreeing. Learning how to focus... That is certainly a useful skill. Something Isaac also needed to learn. It would certainly allow him to bypass the fangs of procrastination should he really decide to concentrate on something fully. "That and it's a really pretty place." she continued. Taking a look around, Isaac couldn't really say she was wrong. Watching the courtyard as the Sun's rays were shining down was certainly a nice thing to see. "That it is." Isaac said in response.

"Bet you never had nothin' like this." she said as she lifted her bowl. Isaac couldn't quite discern what it was that she was having but it still looked appetizing in it's own way. "What brings you to Ravencroft?" Jenny asked him. This next question wiped away any semblance of a happy expression off of Isaac's face as a frown took shape. His reason for being in Ravencroft... the history behind that wasn't quite the happiest and the sheer thought of it brought Isaac great discomfort. He wasn't really sure he wanted to share it with her, someone he had just recently met. "I... don't really want to talk about that." he said, signs of bitterness plain in his voice from his distaste for this topic. He didn't want any misunderstandings though, so he continued saying "It's all just a bit too personal... Don't take it the wrong way." Personal was putting it lightly...

It was clear from Isaac's response to Jenny's question left him without the want to speak on the subject. Her eyes shifted downward, feeling like a scolded dog. She knew well that the reason for his response wasn't her simply asking the question, but as he had stated, he did not wish to share why he had come to Ravencroft. Battling her internal instincts to put the blame on herself, her face finally returned upward and her gaze came back to Isaac. "I understand." She punctuated the sentence with a nod and a small smile. "If ya ever are feelin' like ya need to talk about it, I'm sure you could find me pretty easy." She'd probably frequent this spot time and time again during lunch especially. Lifting with her hands, Jenny resettled herself on the bench. The school uniform wasn't exactly her idea of comfort, and she needed to switch it up a little.

"I do hope ya accomplish whatever it is you came here for." Jenny attempted to reassure Isaac and maybe prevent or pull him from whatever mood he was getting ready to get into. She knew how it could get when people shut down; she'd done the same multiple times when people started to ask her about her ward book and the broom she put across her door when her friends would come over, or even the fact she refused to sweep out after the sun had come down. Everyone had something they wanted to keep to themselves, and the reason why Isaac had come to Ravencroft was his. "How'ya liking it here, anyway?" She referred back to Ravencroft with a small, glowing smile on her lips as she spoke. Isaac seemed like a very nice guy, and Jenny wanted to be at the forefront of problem solvers if the school experience wasn't exactly what he wanted. Traveling to go out of your way to a school only to find it wasn't what you wanted would certainly be a bummer and if anything would be said about Jenny, she was quick to jump up and help people out to the best of her abilities when it came to things like that.

OOC: Psh, don't worry about it. Happens to everyone.

After Isaac's comment, Jenny had looked a bit dejected and said "I understand.". Isaac felt a bit sad at bringing her mood down. Though he couldn't really think of a way to prevent it, outside of making an expression that possibly wasn't that dark. "If ya ever are feelin' like ya need to talk about it, I'm sure you could find me pretty easy." she said, resuming her smile. "I'll keep it in mind... Thanks." Isaac said, his own smile slowly returning to him. It felt a bit reassuring to know that at the very least there'd be someone who he could talk to about it if it ever came up.

"I do hope ya accomplish whatever it is you came here for." she said. What he came here for... Hopefully he would be able to do just that. So far his time in Rockport was good and if things kept this way maybe he could end up forgetting about the whole thing entirely. "I hope so too." he answered simply. "How'ya liking it here, anyway?" she asked him, her smile slowly regaining it's former glow. "So far, it's been going pretty well. I like the place and the people here seem good as well. Granted there have been a few bumps, such as what happened at the last festival... but outside of that there really haven't been too many problems." he said. The incident at the festival... Hopefully that was a one time thing and wouldn't happen any more. If it did, then it would certainly be difficult to continue on with normal life if a person like that was on the loose.

His last statement irked her a bit. As he talked about the festival - as he put it, one of few bumps in the road since he's been here - Jenny tried to conjure up any memory of any mention of the said incident. Her brow furrowed in deep thought and her eyes stared at her shoes so she could focus easier. Nope, nothing. If she had been subject to the information, she'd simply forgotten it. Her eyes returned to upward while a defeated sigh was let out; Jenny wasn't one to easily forget something. Perhaps Isaac meant an incident at the festival on a personal level? She redirected her eyes to her conversation partner and erased any remnants of her thoughtful process; she didn't necessarily smile, but her aura definitely said she was upbeat.

"Did somethin' bad happen last festival?" Jenny's question left her mouth in a curious and caring tone. If it were to be something that still bothered Isaac, then she'd like to help. To ease any painful memories - if there were any, that is - he wished to share, she shot him a smile and cocked her head slightly to one side out of habit. If he didn't feel like sharing, he didn't have to. If something happened on a schoolwide level, however, she felt like she was in necessary need to be privy to the information.
