We're all soldiers now

Once again, it was that time of the week, the Home Economics Club meeting. There were a considerable amount of students talking as the teacher was standing outside of the room, conversing with another faculty member. Sadly, it appeared that there had not been as many students attending the club ever since the tragedy that occurred downtown a while ago. However, there were also the students who were starting early with exam preparation. Even so, it wasn't as loud as it was in the beginning of the year. Still, some things never changed, such as Masato sitting at a table filled with chatter bugs, not daring to speak a word. "Good afternoon, everyone," Said the teacher, walking back into the club room. A few students had returned the greeting before she talked once more. "I'm sure all of you are ready for Christmas to come by, right? Well, I've decided that we will be doing some Christmas-related activities during our club meetings! For today, I thought it would be a good idea to bake some Christmas goods. I have enough ingredients for whatever you want to make, from cookies to cakes," She said, picking a piece of paper shortly afterwards. "These will be the group that you work with, today." The teacher had began to read off from the list, Masato listening to every name. After all, the last thing he wanted to do was have no idea who he was supposed to work with. "...Masato Fukuda and Haru Takana," She said, the brunette looking up. Haru Takana....While he had not introduced himself to her, he had certainly heard some nasty things heard about. These things ranged from her being called a dirty bitch to an old witch. However, the martial artist knew better than to always believe what other said, especially when the ones that said that were part of the 'popular' clique. Students began to walk around the room, finding their partners for the club activity. Masato did the same, looking around the room for a gray haired female. As one would think, it did not take much time for him to accomplish this. He walked to her location, and he prepared himself for his introduction. He never could get over his shyness of meeting new people. "I-I'm Masato. Are you...Haru?" He asked her, with a shy expression. |

Haru meanwhile was sitting in the corner alone with no one else at her table. She chose to remain quiet and simply glanced around the room. Everyone else had people they were talking to at their tables. She could only remain reclusive and alone in her corner. She was dubbed a freak, an old hag, and various other nasty names. No one wanted to hang out with her as a result. The teacher that led the Home Economics club was busy consulting one of her co-workers. The club was probably going to help prepare for the holidays by baking sweets and whatnot. She was fine with this, but she was curious about whom she would be paired up with. Pairings and groups were always assigned, and she had yet to find anyone that she was comfortable working with. She just hoped it wasn't one of the bullies. It appeared that she was lucky. She was paired up with a male she didn't know much about besides his participation in martial arts. People began murmuring about her as her name was called. Her eyes glanced up to see that the brunette male had already arrived at her table and was kindly greeting her. Her cheeks turned slightly pink as she greeted him back. "Hi and yes. The gray hair probably made it obvious...." A slight smile appeared on her face as she welcomed him to the table. "Um...feel free to choose a chair. There's no one sitting here besides me." It was nice to have a seemingly friendly partner for this project. She honestly needed more friendly people in her life. |

When Haru had made the comment about her identity being obvious due to her hair color, Masato could not deny that. However, in his best attempt to not offend her, he simply remained silent until she suggested for him to take a seat. "Oh...I will, thank you," He said, sliding out a chair. He sat in it, and the girl was sitting in front of him. There was an awkward silence for a few seconds. The reason for this was partly due to his shyness of talking to new people, but he did his best to start some sort of conversation. "Uh...was there anything specific that you wanted to make?" He asked, trying to sound as polite as possible. After all, he didn't want to upset her if he suggested something that she would dislike cooking, and the brunette was never known to be the pushy type either. Hopefully, the duo would not be bothered by any of the other students during their club activities. |

The teacher had awkwardly paired the two shy people of the group to perform a project together. Namely they had to cook something for the holidays. Haru was not the pushy type either, but she was not a pushover either. Biting her lip, she glanced at the various choices of recipes. There were many different things that they could do. She always did love gingerbread cookies, but there was probably another group that was already going to make that. A cake? No, that would be too much of a hassle to bake. It would have to be big enough for a large group of people. She continued thinking of ideas until finally something came to mind. They could make holiday shaped brownies. That would be a nice idea. "We could bake holiday-shaped brownies. You know, like the symbols for the three holidays that are around this time. It would be fun." A gentle smile appeared on her face as she stopped at the brownie recipe. She would be okay with another suggestion as well, but she decided to speak up first. The female noticed that her partner was shy and reluctant to speak. She silently hoped that she wasn't scaring him. It was hard to tell these days. Edited by Noir, Dec 24 2013, 04:01 PM.

A small smile appeared on the male's face after the girl's suggestion. While he did not bake them so often, he believed they were easy bake. "That's a good idea," He said, before a slight look of confusion could be seen on his face. "The three holidays in December are Christmas, Kwanzza, and...Hanukkah, right? I know Christmas in America is supposed to be about Santa Claus giving presents to children...but I'm not familiar with Kwanzza or Hanukkah since I lived in Japan until now," He explained, scratching the back of his neck. "Could I..uh...please have an explanation of them?" Masato asked Haru, hoping that he did look like a complete moron in front of his underclassmen. If things go well, he may be able to learn more about the lifestyle of Americans. |

"Kwanzaa is an African holiday celebrated by African and African American people. They light seven candles in a candle holder in celebration. Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday where they also light candles and play a gambling game with a spinning top known as a dreidel. I personally only observe Christmas, but we can have the symbols for the others too! Haru was of course more than happy to explain the holidays to Masato. She didn't mind helping out one bit, and she proceeded to pull out the ingredients they would need for the brownie batter. Notably the brunette seemed to be rather shy, as if he didn't want to offend her. She found this compelling considering the fact that this was similar in communication patterns to other native Japanese people. This method of behaving in a passive light. Being more attached to America, Haru had better experience with a more direct conversational pattern than an indirect one. She smiled as she proceeded to take her hair out and tie it into a bun placed high on top of her head. "You can probably tell from my name, but I'm Japanese too. However, I was born in California. My parents are from Japan. I can speak both languages, so feel free to converse in Japanese with me if you want." Either language worked fine for the grey-haired maiden. A confused expression appeared on her face as she searched for the bowl. |

Masato nodded his head, showing that he understood the girl's explanation of the holidays. "I think I understand, now...thank you," He said with a smile, helping Haru take out ingredients for the brownie batter. The gray haired adolescent also stated that she was Japanese, and she is capable of speaking in English and the Japanese language. "Ah, thank you," Said the martial artist, with a happy expression. "I had trouble talking to people when I first came here. It would have probably been easier if I would have been able to speak with native English speakers beforehand," Stated the boy. He could remember how embarrassed he was when he spoke improper English during his interview at Wild Duck Burger; being nervous can cause that. As Masato continued to help Haru take out ingredients, he began to come up with ideas for the treats they would be baking. "Do you...." he said, about to explain one of his ideas. However, he noticed the confused expression that the girl was showing. "Is something wrong, Haru?" He asked with a concerned look. Near the other side of the room, there were plenty of extra bowls for people to use. However, there was a group of girls. From their appearance, they appeared to be part of the popular clique. Their chitchat involved mostly the new fashion trends, their boyfriends, and gossip that was about other students. |

Haru shuffled through all the cabinets within the mini kitchen area they were stationed in. There was no sign of a bowl anywhere. A slight frown appeared on her face as the information sinked in. They needed a bowl if they were going to be baking anything. Realizing her worried expression, the muscles in her face eased up as a tiny smile appeared. "We don't have a bowl...we're going to need that no matter what we're choosing to bake." This probably meant scurrying over to the other stations in search for the missing item. There were probably spares somewhere within the room. The hazel eyes scanned quickly for the last item and rapidly found it. There was one issue: the bowls were located by a group of bratty rumormongers that would have zero problems ripping into the female student for even attempting to wander over to their area. She was treated with cruelty and ridicule usually, and right now she wasn't in the mood to deal with that nor start up a conflict. She had no choice but to ask a favor of Masato. "Can you help me grab one for our table?" A strange feeling told her that he would spot the distant bowls right away. Her hopes were that it wouldn't become a recipe for disaster. |
