"Tell me your troubles, strange ugly Moogle."
(Takes place after Devil's Mirror and From Death, Life)

---

He yawned for the third time in so many minutes and rubbed his eyes. He stood there in his practice outfit from basketball club, old tennis shoes, and a one-piece hooded slate gray sweatshirt. It was pretty early in the morning, they regrouped at the nearest train station and then a few transfers later they were in Mizugachi and face to face with the large, imposing wall that was a monolithic tribute to conspicuous consumption that separated the Mizutas from all their subjects.

"You know she's not even gonna be here, right?"

"Quite. I supposed that she likely left at the first convenient juncture. I have no expectations that we'll actually see her. Alas, I fear that we are rather low on her priorities, should we have made the list at all." Yoko was as serene as ever. As if that outburst last night had never happened. She wore powder blue tights, high boots, a dark skirt and a a pullover white sweater for a top. Her patch-covered jacket was there as always and she had a clip to hold back some of her lengthening ruby hair out of her eyes.

"Hmm? Why are we here then if you know?" He looked over at her curiously. She wasn't quite as tiny as she was when they first met. Or maybe he just saw her in a different light than a girlfriend he flaked out on many moons ago.

"I can only speak as to my own motivations, Hayate Goto. I am here for no other reason than I said I would be. What's more, is it not suspicious that this all leads back to the most prosperous family in Yumegawa?"

Huh, she noticed that too. She also turned to Hayate with a little smile and asked. "Why did you decide to come despite Kyo having absconded long ago?"

"Well, it's not for the sake of some smarmy green-haired Kansai hick, that's for sure." On second thought. Hayate Goto didn't like Kyo very much at all, now that they weren't all bound together in a do or die situation after all.

"Goto-san, really. I do not see the need for namecalling."

"Ehhhh…" He rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, mainly I'm here because you said you'd be here and I don't like the idea of you just coming up here alone. I caught onto the same thing you did, this whole thing with the Mizutas is starting to stink."

She only nodded. "What's say you that we try to ask around, and after we are sent away, we visit the Garlands or my other friends?"

Yeah, she had friends there, that sounded exactly like her. But best if they got to it before some security guard showed up and sent them both away for being loitering urchins or something.

He wanted to get to the bottom of the Mizuta's involvement in this Persona things was. He stepped over the immaculate driva way flanked by well-manicured lawns and stepped up to a buzzer by the front gate and pressed the button. He saw no reason not to lay most of their cards out, at least regarding the Nana Samurakami clone.

As soon as prompted, Hayate said: "Hello? My name is Hayate Goto, here with Yoko Fukui. We understand a green-haired woman named Kyo who was originally from Osaka was a guest here? She only recently woke up and have reason to believe she'd just left?"

It was a lot more information than he'd like to give away so much information, but he was well aware of their position. Just two nobodies from the 'wrong' highschool who just showed up unsolicited. If they didn't say the right things and press the right buttons, no one on that island palace on the other side was going to give either of them the time of day.

So here they were. Thrown headfirst into some not-a-murder mystery involving someone who most definitely was not in Osaka anymore. Compounded with the fact that now they were waiting to speak with someone who lived with the people who for lack of a better term, owned all of Yumegawa. Daichi had gone out of his way to at least look some level of presentable. Which meant for him, actually ironed clothes and his t-shirt being tucked into his jeans. "It ain't exactly like we can just ignore the Mizuta stuff anyway, gotta be a reason that Kyo was here right?"

Having Kagura along was a real boon. With her they actually had a presence to be considered in terms of being somehow connected to one of the movers and shakers in Mizugachi. Hopefully she was going to be tough, steeled Kagura instead of meek and skittish like she was at the estate. "Anyway, we're all here now right? Might as well see this thing all the way through instead of backin' out now."

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
A beep sounded at the door. The voice of a woman, polite and formal, sounded out:

"Are you the ones our guest Janeway-san said to expect?" it said. "I regret to say that the young woman, Charinko-san, left our care early this morning... shall I tell Janeway-san you're here? He requested that I bring anyone asking after Charinko-san to him."

The radio hum went silent, indicating that the voice on the other end of the intercom had released the "talk" button.

Oh, that's right, she did say check the obituaries, and at first, Hayate thought that the newspaper had been a victim of vandalism.

'Truly, not only did she have a man's name, but in the language of the Japans does that not translate to "village bicycle?"'

Yeah, he was right, but he wasn't going to get into the details of linguistics considering that particular voice in his head likewise spoke in 'the language of the Japans.' Instead he let his hand hover over the talk button and looked to Kagura for confirmation. The girl was somewhat overdressed over the others nice blouse, a scarf, peasant skirt and high heeled boots with all the accessories and trimmings. But he also heard she ran in the same circles as Mizuta, so she couldn't just roll up as simply dressed as the rest of them.

Word had a way of traveling fast and far it seemed. She looked up from her 'America-San' digital doujin and shrugged. Apparently she didn't have any idea who this 'Janeway' character was either. She was planning to do the talking once Hayate got their foot in the door, but that assumed Mizuta would have anted to talk to them personally.

No plan survives contact with the enemy, and all that.

So, Goto had to improvise. "Oh, yes, please, we'd like to see Janeway-san." He was decidedly careful not to mention anything about the 'guests' in case they didn't happen to be it.

"Guess we're going in." Kagura would have had a lot more questions, but along the way there, Daichi and the others would have had a chance to brief her on what happened last night in the Hall of Mirrors. All she had to do was make sure she didn't shame the Matsumoto line in front of the Mizutas and it'd be fine.

No big deal, it wasn't like she'd not seen money before or anything like that.

Wait they weren't even going to meet with an actual Mizuta? That was outrageously suspicious. Whoever this Janeway character was, he was tied up in Kyo's deal. "Let's hope we ain't here for nothin'." Kyo was gone somewhere, hopefully in the city but there wasn't much reason for her to do that other than the fact that she was officially dead and had nowhere else to go.

"Guess we won't be havin' to play at politics today Kagura. At least not like I thought we might have to. Sorry about draggin' you out here for nothin'." That might have been actually a good thing, considering it was her whole family's reputation on the line whenever she had to deal with doing that. It was probably best if Daichi himself was as quiet as possible, any blundering around with the talk they might have would hurt any chance of learning about what was going on.

"I'll see you in momentarily."

And it wasn't long until the voice on the other end of the intercom found itself suddenly attached to a face, body, and quite a bit of lace. There was a distinct difference between the kind of maid outfit one saw in fetish-driven sources and the one worn by an actual maid; for one thing, the skirt was nice and respectable, rather than flairing out and showing all kinds of legging stuff. The maid approached from across the way--the distance between gate and door was not actually that vast. She stopped at the gate, reached for some unseen button off to the side, and sure enough, it opened. She bowed, low and proper.

"I am Tsubaki Ota," she said politely. "Follow me, please. I will see you to the guest quarters. I can get you refreshments as well, if you like. Do you share Charinko-san's preference for cheeseburgers with bacon, ketchup, and french fries?"

The maid straightened up, standing aside to allow the others entry. Once they were inside, she would close the gate--the button that did so was one of a number of them apparently sheltered from the elements by something not unlike a fusebox lid beside the gate. After that, she would lead them into the house. From there, a walk across the inner courtyard, and into the guest suites to the east. The compound was distinctly Japanese in its stylings; if it weren't for the modern conveniences like lights and electronics here and there, it might have been a fitting set for a period movie.

Eventually, Tsubaki would lead them to a guest room in which there was a large square table surrounded by tatami mats, the walls adorned with a number of decorations and a potted plant in every one of the room's four corners. It was the same room in which Janeway had spoken with Kyo, in fact. But no one was waiting there. It seemed there would be a bit of a wait before the group met the unknown foreigner.

She put her phone away and was pretty cheerful about the whole thing. "Oh, it's fine. It's simpler that way, Daichi-san! I hust hope I'll be some help in some way!"

Of all the party, Kagura likely had the most experience dealing with maids. Her own family had several, and she was quite fond of them all. She didn't so much as bat an eye was Tsubaki introduced herself to them.

On the other end of the spectrum, Hayate Goto hadn't seen an authentic maid in…ever. His family wasn't outrageously affluent, nor did he live with those that were for any length of time like Daichi or even Yoko. At the same time, he likewise didn't falter at the introduction. It seemed he was going to be the face of the group, and it was best to stay composed in that case. "Pleased to meet you, Tsubaki-san." He glanced to Kagura as he chanced be relaxed on the honorifics in this case. She gave a quiet nod, it wasn't a major faux pas as far as she was concerned.

"As I said before? I'm Hayate Goto, this is Yoko Fukui, Daichi Nakamura and your employer should be somewhat familiar with Kagura Matsumoto?" He handled the round of introductions, motioning to himself and everyone else as he mentioned them. Then he followed her inside.

It was just as nice up close as it looked like over a distance. Picturesque, and slavishly faithful to the old styles. It wasn't exactly a shocker that the Mizutas lived well, but he was a bit surprised by the similarities he saw between this and his grandfather's mountain retreat. The biggest differences were the simplest ones: It was magnitudes smaller and more modest than the Mizuta compound and there was nothing in the way of modern conveniences there. An old wood burning stove, a portable radio, a well out back and no other 'distractions' as his grandfather so put it.

Just like they thought, Kyo bailed early. They fed her before she left, presumably she was clothed too. If she didn't wanna be found, he wasn't gonna run off and go looking for her. Someone had to give this Nakadachi guy a heads-up, but that could have been handled later. For now? Rather than grumble about that, or risk offending their hosts by looking down on their hospitality, Hayate obliged.

"Yes please, that sounds great, and a root beer too?" It was kind of weird just having someone so happy to oblige. He was marooned in a world of wants and desires run amok and that was the strangest sensation he had thus far.

"Many thanks for your magnanimous offer, Tsubaki Ota-san. I will have the same, save with a cola." Yoko gave the maid an appreciative bow.

Kagura however, was used to the concept. Even if she thought it was best to wean herself off it. When someone offered, she…wait, a burger and fries for breakfast?! That's weird! They're weird. "May I have Eggs Benedict and a cup of orange juice instead?" Comparatively speaking, the house was no new wonder to her. She'd been sure she hyperventilated in that corner right there when her parents took her to a 'must go' social engagement when she was twelve. Even her younger self failed to appreciate the sense of scale or the work that went into such a set-up and that didn't change with later visits. Of course it was nice, but…nothing that blew her away.

Meanwhile, while Daichi decided if he was going to take her up on the kind offer or not, Goto, Yoko and Kagura all parted with their shoes as they stepped inside. Traditional style decorum demanded nothing less.

"Please, pardon my incessant questions, but how is Janeway-san associated with the Mizuta family? For that matter, what are the nature of his ties to Charinko-san?" He found a place to kneel before the table, and that left him flanked on either side by Yoko and Kagura who followed suit, that left Daichi little choice to take a seat directly across from him.

"Well Ota-san could you hold the burger and double the fries for me if you could? Just a water for my drink, thanks." Daichi followed the lead of everyone else and removed his shoes. So, here they were in a rich family compound waiting to be informed on what was going on by a person none of them knew who wasn't even in the room. Part of him wanted to trust that nothing shady would happen to any of them before they left the Mizuta property. That part of him was stupid and heavily outmatched by the rest of him who didn't trust any of this for a second.

He took his place at the table opposite of Hayate. Resisting the urge to play with his hair or the idea of fiddling with his clothes, Daichi instead gave the table's occupants all a momentary glance. Stirring up negative feelings or voicing panic wouldn't do but at the same time it sometimes paid to be paranoid didn't it?

As the guests followed, Tsubaki Ota simply nodded respectfully at their orders, questioning nothing. "I can have the cook prepare the Eggs Benedict. We also have what we need to make cheeseburgers and French fries in our kitchens, now; Janeway-san insisted it would help Charinko-san acclimate after she returns."

At the table, she turned toward Goto, her expression one of polite cluelessness. "I'm afraid I do not know exactly how Ichigo-sama first met Janeway-san, or when," she said earnestly. "I only know that my master bade me to attend to Janeway-san's needs while he remains at the estate, and that this was to be an indefinite arrangement. Janeway-san brought the girl, Kyo Charinko-san, with him when he arrived. I do not know how they are connected... Charinko-san seemed not to know who Janeway-san was, but she was in a... strange state when he brought her here. She was heavily bandaged, you see. She had suffered terrible burns. We treated her, and Janeway-san--"

The maid broke off. She glanced out the door. She looked at once awed, and fearful.

"Janeway-san was able to... repair her burns with time," she said quietly. "He told me that I didn't need to remain silent about that, that any guests who came asking after Charinko-san would know what it meant." And then, quickly, the maid turned away. "I will alert Janeway-san, and have your meals prepared. Please wait patiently. It may take some time. I believe Janeway-san may be in the basement, tinkering with his model guns."

The reactions of the other people at the table were mostly relaxed. Mostly. Yoko was as she usual was: The picture of serenity. She rested on her knees with her hands together at her lap and listened to everything Tsubaki had to say. The first thought was a consideration as to the power of Janeway's Persona. Healing injuries that grievous was well beyond her current abilities. Though it was curious that he would wait until a near-cremation to heal her. One thing that did get her attention at once was the mention of 'model guns.' It could have been just a coincidence, but it just fit too neatly to her, she said nothing but glanced to Hayate at the mention, he simply nodded.

Kagura was calm, and composed to a degree that was normally out of character for her. She was doing her very best to project an air of easy grace as expected of someone of her station in the situation that she found herself in. The whole story of Kyo Charinko sounded gruesome and unpleasant but nothing about it rang any bells for her. She, somehow blanched at the mention of being mistakenly burned whilst still alive but she kept it together after that.

She was more occupied with Daichi's well being. She put her comparatively tiny hand on top of his in hopes of comforting him. She already knew he was plenty nervous and this probably did nothing to help.

Goto listened to it all, with his head resting against his knuckle of his right hand while his right elbow rested against the table. He was calm, but he listened very intently to the whole tale and his reactions were quite animate. Kyo was cremated, and going by the time since she was apparently murdered and for services…either she spent that time between in a morgue refrigerator or they embalmed her. Either way it was probably just as bad, if not worse than just almost being burnt alive, but he healed her up good as new. That wasn't even factoring in the possibility they had a medical examiner do an autopsy given the circumstances…

Tsubaki was right to be spooked, and she didn't even know the half of it. One thing that really wasn't adding up was why go though the trouble of saving her when she's declared dead in the eyes of the law and her own loved ones? It's almost like this Janeway went out of his way to have her erased to drop on Mizuta's doorstep.

The human experimentation angle wasn't completely impossible.

Then, just like that, she mentioned 'model guns.' Yoko got it, and though he wasn't automatically going to jump to conclusions, it made it sound an awful lot like this Janeway was that person Miss Sakai almost ran into, and if so? It was entirely possible that he had something to do with that freak Apathy Syndrome case that caught traction in the news the month prior.

"I see. Thank you very much Ota-san." He reverted to a way of talking as if she was just someone off the street, rules of how guests were supposed to address their host's servants be damned.

At least now they had a little better idea of what they were up against.
