The physical contact was confusing but not unwelcome. Wouldn't it have been better to avoid things like that considering they were trying to look professional? Regardless of that he gave Kagura his best 'i'm totally fine' grin. Daichi couldn't imagine why tinkering with model guns was something anyone would do for fun but everyone had their hobbies. However he'd managed it, Janeway had probably saved Kyo's life. Especially considering the fact that she had burns instead of water damage to her lungs or something to that effect. Curiously Susano'o had chosen not to comment on the current predicament the four of them had become involved in. Daichi hoped the storm god realized that he would need to actually concentrate at what was happening instead of being caught up in a headache. "That's alright Ota-san. We wouldn't want to end up rushin' Janeway-san, really." Of course this was one of those situations where a supervillain might proclaim that they were in no position to make demands anyway. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
It took about five minutes. When he finally arrived, they would see him in the doorway as a tall, foreign man who looked half-spanish, looking down at the table with a somewhat-nonplussed look on his face. He stared for a few moments, and then said, "Are all of you this young? No offense, but..." Stepping into the room, Janeway's eyes slid from one face to the next, a slight frown coming to his lips. He seemed troubled, but there was a certain, very slight stiffness to his voice when he spoke again, as if he was voicing a worry, but not the worry. "It shouldn't come down to kids your age to run around risking your necks--or your memories--over stuff like this," he said. "But I guess if the world were a perfect place, I wouldn't have had to save that girl in the first place." A slow, reluctant smile came to his lips, and he inclined his head, eyes looking at each of them in turn again. "My name is Jonathan Janeway... Internet travel blogger." This was... troubling. Very, very troubling. So far he'd encountered no one with the power or the potential above eighteen. Sure, twenty was the legal age of adulthood that he was used to, but that was beside the point. He'd been hoping to use the abundance of Persona-users here for survival. How was he supposed to sleep at night if he had to live off a bunch of teenagers? Christ, that actually sounded worse out-of-context than in. That boy in the alley, Janeway hadn't meant to attack him. He'd been poking around, but Kronos had started acting up. There had been an awakened Persona-user nearby. He'd had to. It was that boy or him. But it was a one-time thing! A one-time thing, he'd told himself. The Charinko girl was different--horrible, she'd made her own bed and as far as Janeway was concerned she could sleep in it, it had been like keeping food in the refrigerator. That's what he told himself, anyway. Moving closer to the table, Janeway let his body remain relaxed independent of the internal tension. He hoped he could at least count on the memory-stealing dream taking some adults. Maybe even a few criminals, some people he wouldn't give a shit about if he had to-- --No. He didn't want to think of this now. Best to focus on trying to make this situation work to his advantage, never mind which advantage he actually used it for... |

"Tell me your troubles, strange ugly Moogle."
|
In the span of those five minutes, some time before Janeway actually stepped into the door, Yoko's calm and easy-going demeanor had been disturbed by something that she noticed. She saw that there was a presence of a Persona but…she could also tell something was amiss at once. Her eyes were without their usual focus. Whatever she was seeing, it caused her to lean back for a moment, as she was physically taken aback. There was nothing natural about the way that Persona was with him. It was though she was 'looking' at someone who had another limb grafted onto them in some strange way. It didn't fit, but it seemed someone or something tried to make it fit. "What do you see, Yoko?" "He has…Personae. Different from ours. I do not know if they were native to him or if some force imbued them upon him." There was no time to elaborate. She raised her hand in a request for silence, and lowered it before he stepped inside. As soon as Janeway had actually appeared, both Goto and Kagura stood, but for very different reasons. Goto was wary he didn't want to be sitting down when this guy came in. Kagura was nervous! She was always nervous though! She also wasn't as deep in the situation to be as worried as the others, Yoko's dire words aside. She just wanted to be polite. "Pleased to meet you, Janeway-san. I'm sorry, but were you expecting someone older?" What exactly was he talking about? He was dismayed they were too young? Too young for what? "Anyways, my name is Kagura Matsumoto." Should she leave them to introduce themselves or do it for them? Ahhhhh… That could be a prob- "I think Ota-san's taken care of the introductions on our end, hasn't she? But just the same, I'm Hayate Goto. I don't recall ever having a choice to get involved in this or not." He was going to think of trying to be more open and friendly. First meetings and all that. But being a sullen, stand-offish teenager was probably less suspicious at that point. Yoko looked up to him, she had a poker face and didn't stand up when he arrived like the others. "Well met. I am Yoko Fukui. Now that we have introduced ourselves, I really must ask you, Jonathan Janeway…where did you get your Personae?" Unlike Goto and his intentions of getting to try to find out what he was willing to tell over the course of a conversation, she lead with a pointed question. Well, Yoko was going straight ahead. Might as well have supported her."That's a good question Yoko. Now that I think about it, Personas only appeared her for a few months? Way before the incident Charinko mentioned? Also, I kind of want to know how you came to find Charinko-san in the first place? Why exactly would the Mizutas patronize a travel blogger?" |

All of the rapid fire questioning seemed more than a little useless to Daichi. Just why the hell would Janeway end up giving them the total one hundred percent truth? There was absolutely no advantageous reason for him to reveal any of the cards he had immediately. So the guy had personas that were different from all of them, did that even matter much? He chose to follow Yoko's lead and continue sitting as opposed to jumping to his feet. "Daichi Nakamura." Goto was leading the charge with all the questions so it was probably best to just let Janeway process things without piling more into the thick of it. "Suppose some of 'em might end up bein' your age." Whatever else could have been said without having Janeway feel like a bunch of Japanese teens were parachuting down his throat? It wasn't going to be coming from Daichi. The tall boy did the best he could to just sit there and look like he wasn't slightly miffed about a lot of things. It was pretty awful feeling so stiff all the time recently. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"
|
Janeway's eyebrows went up, and he surveyed Goto with some interest. He paused for a few moments, and then, for an instant--and instant that perhaps, Yoko Fukui in particular might notice--Janeway focused Eidyia's mental eyes on Goto, on his Persona... on his Arcana. And there was a thrill, punctuated by a very slight intake of breath, when he perceived what it was. The Fool. Exactly the Arcana he had registered when he had pursued Charinko. But when she had manifested a Persona, it had come up Moon; whatever potential for the Wild Card she had once had, if that was even what her previous Arcana signified in the first place, it had disappeared sometime between entering that lake and waking up. She was an ordinary Persona-user, like all the children at the lab, all the other failures like him. But this was an awakened Persona-user. A true Wild Card. "...You cut straight to the heart of the matter, don't you," Janeway remarked. "I feel as if I'm being interrogated. I may as well answer you. After all, I have nothing to hide from fellow Persona-users. I meant no disrespect, but I've met and... read files on very, very few adult Persona-users. Perhaps there is simply something about adolescent psychology that makes one ripe for it. I can't say." The man shook his head, smiling a little, and looked to each of the teenagers around the table in turn. "Persona is not a phenomenon unique to just this city," he said simply. "The potential exists in people across the world. All I know of its true nature is that the ones who gave me my powers believed Persona to be the result of a human being taking control of their inner Shadow... the suppressed self, all of the unacknowledged, ugly, embarrassing, or dark aspects of the human heart. There have been several Persona-related incidents in Japan over the years, maybe even ones we know nothing about. The Apathy Syndrome epidemic in the Iwatodai region, the 'Joker' serial murders in Sumaru City, and the S.E.B.E.C. incident that resulted in the complete lockdown of Mikage-cho are three such indicents. They were just the ones 'on file' though." Janeway closed his eyes, the smile fading from his mouth. "Charinko was a girl I passed on the street while I was in Osaka last," Janeway added after a few moments' pause, to give the kids some time to digest all of this. "I sensed her potential and tailed her to see if it would lead me to trouble, but she had trouble of her own. I rescued her from it, but barely, and she has spent a long time recovering from what I was unable to stop. As for why the Mizuta family is providing me shelter and resources..." He opened his eyes, now frowning in a trouble way. "That would be because they are hoping to use the technology I shared with them to turn the power of Shadows to their own benefit," he said softly. "Not something they will ever be able to do while I am here to regulate their knowledge, but if it provides me the freedom to investigate these amnesia cases, then let them have their delusions... unlike all of you, I did not summon my Persona in the dream. I had no knowledge of what was truly happening, only a certainty that Shadows had to be behind it." |

"I don't have time for people that play around." Goto answered flatly. Janeway's reactions were not very encouraging. First he had that same spaced out look that Goto had seen Yoko do a million times when she was seeing something others just weren't able to. His eyes narrowed as he stared back and then asked."Could you maybe get us in contact with some of the other persona-users then?" Preferably one that wasn't as sketchy as present company. There was no reason to take everything or anything he told them at face value. But he already knew there were Persona users who had never set foot in the city. The really new thing was that most of them were walking around out in the world and not prisoners of weird pocket dimensions only accessible though obscure means. "So, where'd you get your Persona then?" It was another good way to test, Yoko already knew the method was drastically different than their own method, so it was a good way to safely test at least some of what he was saying. "The Mizutas want to do what?" Kagura's lips pursed as she asked, incredulous. "What do they hope to gain doing that? How did they even come up with such a scheme in the first place?!" Was he serious? Harness or tame Shadows in some way? Even if they knew they existed, normal people couldn't even get to… …oh, that would mean they would need to use persona-users under their employ. Like Janeway, right? "Putting that aside. Ota-san mentioned somthing of a model gun? That is not entirely the case, is it? Is this some of this technology you speak of?" Something didn't make sense. If it was so dangerous, then why did he share the technology in the first place? |

"...So uh, were you involved with any of these other things that got to do with all this then Mister Janeway? Or is it all hearsay from someone who gotta bit of info from someone else?" His skin was beginning to itch. Kagura was freaking out, Goto and Fukui were being a bit too much pressing with things for them to probably get any info at all. Janeway was probably just going to clam up about it all before sending them on their way off of all of the nice private property. The fact that the Mizuta family planned on doing something that just reeked of bad idea didn't help anything at all. Sounded like things were going to end belly-up for anyone involved with it if someone didn't put a stop to it. "If you start yellin' someone's gonna hear us Kagura. Need to keep it down there unless we get Mister Janeway here in trouble with his uh, hospitable hosts yeah? Don't need to be makin' anybody's life harden than it already might be. Especially considerin' the ears that they got ain't necessarily the ones attached to themselves." Learning what the hell was going on would still be good! If they could stop trying to wring the guy out like he was a towel though? That would just be totally fabulous. It wasn't like he could really convey that in ways other than just glaring at Goto until he backed off. Even then, Daichi doubted it would have done anything but put a wrinkle or two into the kid's clothing. |

"...does this clockwork hand follow you... or guide you?"

Janeway's attention was, of course, drawn to Kagura. He let her ranting run its course, but he slowly brought his finger to his lips in a shhh motion and held it there for several long seconds afterward, hoping to get her to stop and think about why it was a bad idea to speak too loudly about this, given their present location. Daichi, of course, spelled it out for him, so he lowered his hand and faintly smiled, looking from one guest to the other. "I've secured a degree of privacy here, since the Mizuta family head wants as few people to know about me as possible," he said. "The maid knows quite a bit, but only because--forgive me--she is more trustworthy than her employers. As to the question of how I received my Persona, that is a long story I don't care to recount in full..." He paused, his smile flickering away. He took a slight breath, and then he closed his eyes. "I was an exception of sorts, the odd man out, if you will... as most of the others were children. But an offshoot of the parties responsible for the Iwatodai incident, a splinter corporation, I expect, was continuing experiments on Personas and Shadows even after the previous attempts went so awry..." he murmured. "There were many children used for these experiments, which seem to have been centered on... re-creating the talents of one young boy, now deceased, who had the unique ability to summon multiple Personas. My captors were quite fascinated by the potential of recreating and weaponizing this ability. I was captured as an experiment--most of the other attempts focused on children as a possible place to find people aligned with the 'Fool' Arcana, you see, while I was selected for my... traveling habits. The Fool's 'Journey' taken a little literally, I suppose. I was their first partial success, so I suppose they must have been onto something. But I don't know who was behind those experiments. A third party intervened, with rather a lot of force and a few powerful Persona-users of their own... I was hoping investigating here might lead me to them." Janeway tilted his head back, lips curving slowly downward in a frown as he surveyed the ceiling. "It seems to be a 'natural' occurrence of Shadow activity, though," he said softly, placing some sarcastic emphasis on the word natural. "So my former captors are unlikely to be involved... perhaps they, or their unknown adversaries, may find their way here with time. The events transpiring in this city are not exactly subtle..." By now the four teenagers around the table might have noticed something peculiar about Janeway's speech: though his accent seemed fairly unintrusive, his wording was a bit unnecessarily formal, to the point of almost being stilted. It was the definite hallmark of someone who hadn't had much honest conversation in the Japanese language, but had practiced quite a lot in private. Janeway didn't seem to have a clear sense for how people actually conversed in Japanese; his speech patterns would have made more sense if he were a tourist on a business trip, speaking with business-people, and were completely out-of-place in a chat around a sitting-room table with high-schoolers. |

"Tell me your troubles, strange ugly Moogle."

So, the gist of it was that even though they came all this way, they still couldn't have a proper conversation about this because he wasn't entirely trusting of his patrons. It seemed fair enough to him. It wasn't like he had any reason to trust the first bunch of kids that stumbled in, and Goto certainly didn't trust him. But assuming for the moment that he was able to take what he said at face value. That there were people who were interested in developing and harnessing this for their own self-interested ambitions. It was almost a cliche out of an unispired sci-fi story. Then again, every cliche came about for a good reason. But something stood out that bothered him. He mentioned a certain young man that had the power of the Wild Card? Didn't Bethany mention something of borrowing some Personas of a former guest that time, in the desert… It probably was that guy, but it was just one of the legion things he wanted to ask Bethany. Better off trying to learn for himself it at all possible. The others had different concerns at the time. The story was a grim one, but some parts of it hit closer to home than others for the two girls. For Kagura, the notion that this unnamed splinter of a likewise unnamed company was responsible for what happened to Janeway didn't sit well with her. It was done against his will and whatever process that induced such a thing was no doubt dangerous and probably nightmarish. And after all that, the Mizuta family seemed interested in picking up where that group left off, weren't they? But they were asking her to keep her voice down. "I understand." She said rather somberly, and softly. The story seemed to have affected her well. If someone was really doing those sorts of things to other people…well they couldn't just leave them be! "Iwatodai. Is this not where the cult centralized upon the advent of Nyx originated? Under an enigmatic man named Takaya?" Yoko couldn't help but shift on the mat. The very mention of such a group made it impossible for her to be truly comfortable as long as she considered something like that. "Isn't that the artificial island? Built and owned by some electronics zaibatsu. It's also where the first reported outbreak of apathy syndrome happened?" What? Was he suggesting that this was related to the dead young man? Was there someone with a Persona attacking people there, too? Yoko nodded. "Their mantra was 'Believe in Nyx-sama and be saved. It gained widespread popularity in just a few months. That said, it all crumbled with Takaya vanished mysteriously in late January 2010 and the foretold calamities it warned against never came to pass." "That's all pretty heavy stuff." The feeling of parleying in enemy territory was there all the more. He somehow felt worse about the whole situation if he considered the truth to Janeway and the Mitzutas being at odds. At least they would have been dealing with just one problem if they were some united front. They had to watch out for and be aware of what the riches family in town might be scheming and whatever Janeway was withholding, too. Not much could be done other than just be very careful. "I guess there's not much more we can say at this point. For obvious reasons we're all quite interested in this. But it's a bit much for most of us to just waltz into the estate of the most affluent family in town. Perhaps we could go into detail about this another time at a different meeting?" The walls might have had ears, at least with Janeway alone they just had to worry about him telling them things to his advantage, as opposed to trying to withhold or lie for the sake of his 'friends.' "We would need to get in contact and perhaps you could show us an example of what Ota-san meant? It…still doesn't quite make sense to me." One last attempt to get something a bit more substantial than a somewhat inappropriate breakfast to go for their troubles, that's all the question really amounted to. Human experimentation was all...well it was all really horrible and terrifying honestly. It'd have been nice to have brushed it off with some teenage whimsy about not giving a shit no way no how but that just wasn't going to happen. The story twisted him up inside and made him feel sick. Daichi couldn't bear the thought of what any and all of the people that were deemed failures went through. "Sounds smart to me. Stretchin' our legs for the next meetin' I mean." He couldn't make heads or tails about all the stuff with Iwatodai. Sure the occasional television news report would flip on the television talking about how the crazy man was recruiting more people for a cult. Aside from that he couldn't really bother to think about how this and that were—given the slim chance that they were at all really. "So you're here lookin' into stuff about the people that 'rescued' you then? You got no info on any of them at all? That's...pretty shitty honestly. Ain't even got a paddle to help yourself out. No leads since you got here Mister Janeway?" Whoever the people were they had to be at least okay if they sprung someone out of a place that didn't really think of him as any more than a guinea pig to be toyed around with. "Not to get away from the disgusting topic at hand but uh, any idea where Greenie ran off to?" |
